[Bug 2078895] Re: Upgrade from 22.04 to 24.04.1 not offered anymore

2024-09-05 Thread Thomas Hoffmann
The page https://changelogs.ubuntu.com/meta-release-lts doesn't contain version
24.01 any more
which is referenced in /etc/update-manager/meta-release
I think version 24 appeared there before.

[Bug 2058381] [NEW] Compression of ARM64 kernels causes problems with secureboot and systemd-boot

2024-03-19 Thread Cornelius Hoffmann
Public bug reported:

Hello,

I'm trying to deploy an Ubuntu Server on arm64 with securbeoot and UKIs.
I'm running into the problem that the shipped kernel is just a plain gzip
compressed version of the kernel image.
This causes two issues:
- sbsign refuses to sign the kernel without uncompressing it first (Invalid DOS
header magic)
- systemd-stub/systemd-boot don't recognize this kernel as a valid binary (Bad
kernel image: Load error\n Failed to execute Ubuntu Noble Numbat (development
branch) (\EFI\Linux\ubuntu-6.8.0-11-generic.efi): Load error)

Debian just ships an uncompressed kernel and Fedora ships a PE binary (which
they can do because they dropped BIOS support, so this cannot be adopted for
Ubuntu).
Shipping an uncompressed kernel would be the easiest switch from my view, only
causing problems on small /boot partitions or ESP partitions, respectively.

The current version in Ubuntu causes unexpected behaviour with various
bootchain tools.

[Bug 2058381] Re: Compression of ARM64 kernels causes problems with secureboot and systemd-boot

2024-03-19 Thread Cornelius Hoffmann
The first failure can be easily reproduced by trying to sign vmlinuz,
The second one by using mkosi (https://github.com/systemd/mkosi):
```
$ mkosi genkey
$ mkosi --distribution=ubuntu --architecture=arm64 --release=noble -p
linux-image-generic,systemd,systemd-sysv,udev,dbus,systemd-boot
--qemu-firmware=uefi qemu
[Bug 1960287] [NEW] Blutooth mouse loses connection with the 1022 several times after login, not with the 1005.
2022-02-07 Thread Manfred Hoffmann
Public bug reported:
To be more precise, after logging in I normally press a button on the
mouse, then the Blutooth icon shows me the connection as active in the
bar. After 5-10 seconds it is gone again. The mouse no longer reacts. It
takes about 20 seconds, then I have a connection again for about 5-10
seconds.
The whole thing happens 2-4 times. After that it remains stable.
I will set the timeout to 0.
I did not notice this under 1005
[Bug 1945590] Re: Thinkpad E14 Gen2: Kernel panic with trackpad and trackpoint enabled
2022-02-02 Thread Christian Hoffmann
Thanks a bunch. It also works on a ThinkPad E14 Gen 2 with Ryzen 7 4700u
and AMD Renoir.
When I started with the new kernel I first had graphics issues. No
animations, only internal monitor working, black screen after sleep.
That was caused by a missing graphics driver. Software Updater suggested
me to install some kernel headers for 5.13.0. After installing them and
rebooting everything works perfectly now. Maybe I've installed the
kernel in a strange way. (just a hint if someone else has this issue)
[Bug 1803604] Re: [upstream] "Send -> Document as e-mail" in Writer / Calc does not work
2020-12-21 Thread Joerg Hoffmann
It works under Ubuntu Linux 20.04 as well. Unfortunately only if you
"disable" the apparmor rules for senddoc or set it to "complain" mode.
In this mode the rules are not blocked, but they are logged.
I have not yet figured out how to functionally adjust the rule so that
it also works in "enforce" mode.
Maybe someone knows better about this.
The rule can be put into complain mode with the following command (at
your own risk).
aa-complain usr.lib.libreoffice.program.senddoc
[Bug 1855889] Re: cannot perform operation: mount --rbind /root /tmp/snap.rootfs_vWwNbw//root: Permission denied
2020-05-30 Thread Arthur Hoffmann
Just for completeness, I've found the solution.
I googled some more as none of my other snaps were working and found a little
tidbit I hadn’t come across before.
It mentioned something about using the mount system for /root.
My /root was a symlink to /home/root.
I deleted the symlink
Created a new /root folder
Created a mount entry in /etc/fstab:
/data/home/root /root none rbind
Now my snaps are working.
The full thread where I got this from is here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/snapd/+bug/1729576 the comment in
question is #13.
Thank you again for your help.
[Bug 1872634] [NEW] Webcam Z-Star 305b doesn't work in Ubuntu (again)
2020-04-13 Thread Hoffmann
Public bug reported:
My webcam Z-Star 305b was supposed to work out of the box [1], but it
doesn't work in bionic. It only shows a black screen.
I've read lots of threads and tried some suggestions, but
unsuccessfully.
At present, I'm using bionic x86_64 with kernel 5.3.0-46-generic, before
that I tried it with 4.15.0-96 and some previous versions.
lsmod |grep gspca output is:
gspca_zc3xx57344  0
gspca_main 24576  2 gspca_zc3xx
videobuf2_vmalloc  20480  1 gspca_main
videobuf2_v4l2 24576  1 gspca_main
videobuf2_common   49152  2 gspca_main,videobuf2_v4l2
videodev  208896  5
gspca_main,gspca_zc3xx,videobuf2_v4l2,videobuf2_common
lsusb output is:
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
I tried several ubuntu-version to figure out if the error was introduced
recently into the kernel but couldn't find any working version
I've tried cheese, vlc and guvcview.
2020-02-03 Thread Arthur Hoffmann
Hi there,
Just in case this helps someone else until the Ubuntu version of Chromium works
again on a system similar to mine.
I ended up following this thread:
https://askubuntu.com/questions/1204571/chromium-without-snap
and installed from the Debian Buster repositories.
Regards,
Arthur.
Hello again,
What is the way to install a version of Chromium that works? The Snap
version doesn't work and the regular package does not seem to be
available in the repositories.
Thank you.
[Bug 1575053] Re: Please move the "$HOME/snap" directory to a less obtrusive location
2019-12-16 Thread Felix Hoffmann
There's not much I can add, but having only recently installed snap I'm
also very surprised to have found the snap folder in my home directory.
I know I can hide the folder in nautilus, but this is not the point.
There have been many reasonable suggestion of where to put the folder
and hope one of them can be considered and soon be implemented. Thank
you.
[Bug 1855889] [NEW] Can't run Chromium since upgrade to Ubuntu 19.10
2019-12-10 Thread Arthur Hoffmann
Public bug reported:
Hi,
I try to run Chromium from the menu and nothing happens.
If I run it from the CLI I get:
cannot perform operation: mount --rbind /root /tmp/snap.rootfs_vWwNbw//root:
Permission denied
I tried uninstalling and reinstalling. I tried uninstalling and
reinstalling snapd. Tried anything related I could find on-line, but
nothing works.
Upgrade snap to the latest version on the pre-release channel.
For some reason Chromium does not show up in the Software centre either.
Thanks for any help.
[Bug 1817033] Re: Unable to correctly print PDF file: Error: Ignoring spurious ET operator.
2019-02-21 Thread Tobias Hoffmann via ubuntu-bugs
When pdftocairo ist used with libcairo2-1.15.12-1 -- which (AFAIK)
contains the bug I linked above -- to output a pdf file (as pdftopdf
1.21 will do!), it would be no surprise have a corrupt pdf after
pdftocairo, which gs then rightly will complain about; esp. the ET
-thing is the one things such a buggy libcairo2 will produce.
The only thing form-flattening has to do with it, is that pdftopdf 1.21
would only call pdftocairo when a form is present in the pdf.
[Bug 1817033] Re: Unable to correctly print PDF file: Error: Ignoring spurious ET operator.
2019-02-21 Thread Tobias Hoffmann via ubuntu-bugs
My observations:
As changing pdftops-renderer does not seem to make a difference, probably only
one of the programs is installed and thus used in all cases?
According to Dependencies.txt, libcairo2-1.15.12-1 seems to installed, which
AFAIK is affected by the problem described e.g. here:
https://github.com/Kozea/WeasyPrint/issues/705
I have no explanation though, how the pdf (which, by itself, does not seem to
contain the error, AFAIAC) would run through the cairo pdf backend ...
It does not really seem form-related, but there are some options to change the
form-flattening engines (Till?)
 - or could it possibly be that the 1.21 cups-filter uses some pdf-to-pdf form
flattening which uses the cairo backend ?
Re: [Qemu-devel] [Bug 1769053] Re: Cannot start a guest with more than 1TB of RAM
>  Figuring that limit out is tricky (and I thought it
>  might be BIOS/EFI dependent as well depending where they
>  decide to put their PCI devices)
Both seabios and ovmf try to not go too high in address space.  Reason
is exactly the phys-bits issue.  Using 40 here by default does not only
limit the memory to 1TB.  It also has the problem that the guest thinks
it has 1TB of address space but in reality it might be less.  Even
recent skylake machines have phys-bits=39 (512G) only, and trying to use
the physical address space above 512G in the guest just doesn't work
because the phys-bits=39 limit applies to EPT too.
So checking phys-bits in the firmware, for example to place pci bars as
high as possible in physical address space, is not going to work.
IIRC ovmf uses a 32G sized region with 32G alignment by default, which
will land below 64G (aka phys-bits=36 address space) unless the guest
has more than 30 (q35) or 31 (piix4) GB of memory.
seabios will not map pci bars above 4G unless it runs out of space below
4G.  If needed 64bit PCI bars will be placed right above ram, with
gigabyte alignment.
cheers,
  Gerd
[Bug 1762769] Re: missing entry at apparmor profile for nova instances
2018-04-30 Thread Stefan Hoffmann
Hi,
I found the problem with my setup:
I tried to use case B.
But at /etc/libvirtd/qemu.conf I had an entry 'stdio_handler = "file"'. This
was needed to run my setup with libvirt 1.3 and case A.
Thanks for your help.
[Bug 1762769] Re: missing entry at apparmor profile for nova instances
2018-04-23 Thread Stefan Hoffmann
For the libvirt 1.3.1 setup i have installed:
libvirt-bin   1.3.1-1ubuntu10.21
libvirt0:amd641.3.1-1ubuntu10.21
python-libvirt1.3.1-1ubuntu1.1
To your previous commend:
The qemu arguments for console log and the instance xml looks good.
I can't provide the instance with openstack and start it with virsh, because
the virsh instance is deleted after failure (I assume from libvirt or nova)
But I can provide the logfile of libvirt with debug information (this is very
much output).
The instance id is 2691027e-9d67-4f78-841f-01e6c809e8fc
I can see, that the apparmor profile is created and there the information about
the logfile is shown. But this is only an logentry at the libvirt.log. I don't
know, how this informations are given to apparmor or how the profile is created.
I hope this informations helped.
Thanks for your reply.
Actually I use libvirt 1.3. There an entry for the instance console.log is
createt at apparmor.d.
/etc/apparmor.d/libvirt/libvirt-4612b952-1df7-4f30-a6af-8af2616b41a4.files:
# DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE DIRECTLY. IT IS MANAGED BY LIBVIRT.
  "/var/log/libvirt/**/instance-0004.log" w,
  "/var/lib/libvirt/qemu/domain-instance-0004/monitor.sock" rw,
  "/var/run/libvirt/**/instance-0004.pid" rwk,
  # for qemu guest agent channel
  owner "/var/lib/libvirt/qemu/channel/target/domain-instance-0004/**" rw,
  /dev/vhost-net rw,
  "/dev/net/tun" rw,
Has this changed with version 3? I can't find any entry at apparmor.d that
allows all (or one) instances access to the
/var/lib/nova/instances/{id}/console.log at libvirt version 3.
Is there any way to configure libvirt to change the apparmor profiles?
The other informations you wanted i will provide soon.
My nova instances can't start, because no access to
The apparmor profile is created at /etc/apparmor.d/libvirt/libvirt-
The apparmor profile says: "# DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE DIRECTLY. IT IS
the profile.
I'm working on
Ubuntu 16.04,
[Bug 1670730] Re: pdftopdf "inflate data - incorrect data check" with certain PDFs
2017-03-07 Thread Tobias Hoffmann
Object 39 is an image; but even Object 4 (the content stream of the
first page; obj 93 *is* used on that page) has such a decompression
error.
Ghostscript prints:
  warning: ignoring zlib error: incorrect data check
So probably libqpdf (which is used for the very low-level pdf stuff in
pdftopdf) should also handle this as warning instead of as error?
[Bug 1609419] Re: pstack is broken on amd64
2016-08-08 Thread Carsten Hoffmann
Hello Thomas,
the binary I am originally trying to print the stack of is proprietary,
so I cannot make it available to you. But I did try to print the pstack
of an apache tomcat 8.0.26, the pstack is attached. The result looks
different, but still not very helpful. (essentially the binary is java
in this example)
If you want me to run pstack on another binary, let me know, I could not
think if a good multi threaded binary.
2016-08-03 Thread Carsten Hoffmann
It seems like this was already reported in a comment 2013 in the popular
I am absolutely not sure on what other information to provide, but I
[Bug 1564249] Re: Cannot print a PDF with AcroForms using fit-to-page
2016-04-01 Thread Tobias Hoffmann
For example, here some java/PDFBox-based implementation of how to flatten
simple forms:
 https://gist.github.com/jribble/beddf7620536939f88db
(IIRC there are more form elements than those 2-3 handled here(?)).
Note that QPDF does not have something like the PDAcroForm class (and
its friends) used there to easily access the form data. So any QPDF/C++
based form flattener has to implement that, too.
[Bug 1564249] Re: Cannot print a PDF with AcroForms using fit-to-page
2016-04-01 Thread Tobias Hoffmann
See https://bugs.linuxfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1315 why this cannot work.
And QPDF won't be able to do anything about it, either...
There might even be PDF-capable printers on the market (i.e. where the
rasterization is not done by gs / poppler on the host), where the form content
will not be printed even without the fit-to-page option.
The PDF format generally does not allow arbitrary transformations (as used by
pdftopdf in certain cases) to be applied to the ("interactive") Form content -
which is stored separately from the Page content.
The usual solution for printing is that the viewer application (Evince, Google
Chrome, ...) converts (hard-codes) any Form content into regular Page content
before sending the data to the printing chain. Using lpr skips this
(non-trivial) step.
[Bug 1464783] Re: Number up option is processed before the page extraction option
2015-06-13 Thread Tobias Hoffmann
According to Mike Sweet [1]:
"Dec 28, 2007 by Michael Sweet:
The 1.1.x (and 1.0.x) behavior was incorrect. According to the IPP
specification, number-up is applied *first*, and page-ranges refers to the
imposed pages. Similarly, page-set is applied after imposition."
and here [2]:
"Nov 16, 2008 by Michael Sweet:
IPP specifies the page-ranges applies after imposition, so the current
implementation is correct.
I'll add a note to the documentation about the behavior."
My man page of lp(1) says:
"   -P page-list
Specifies  which  pages  to print in the document. The list can
contain a list of numbers and ranges (#-#) separated by commas (e.g.
1,3-5,16). The page numbers refer to the output pages and not the
document's original pages - options like  "number-up"  can  affect
the numbering of the pages."
And -P is just a shortcut for page-ranges=.
For that reason pstops handles page-ranges the way it does. And pdftopdf
deliberately follows pstops' logic.
However I don't know which IPP specification Mike references here. From
my understanding of RFC2911 (IPP 1.1), Section 15.3 [3], page-ranges is
applied in step 2, and number-up is applied only in the next step 3.
Maybe Mike can shed some light on this issue?
Per PDF Spec, the /contents key in a Page dictionary is optional.
The attached pdf's page 9 has no /contents key.
But QPdfObjectHandle::getPageContents() throws an exception;
cups-filter (pdftopdf) calls it via QPDFObjectHandle::addPageContents().
[Bug 1261666] Re: [pulseaudio] module.c: Failed to load module "module-echo-cancel" (argument: "aec_method=webrtc"): initia lization failed.
2014-06-28 Thread Matthias Hoffmann
Please increase the importance further,
I think the demand for a thing like the webrtc echo cancellator is higher than
you expect. I know a few people who stay with windows because of the
noise-reduction in the realtek audio driver, which removes the crackling noise
in teamspeak/skype they have in linux (see
http://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/115433/microphone-static-background-noise-suppression-on-linux
 for a longer dicussion).
I compiled pulseaudio myself to check if that module would solve the problem
... and indeed, with that plugin the quality of my microfone input can be
improved to the quality it has in windows with the realtek driver.
[Bug 1196679]
2014-01-18 Thread Christian Hoffmann
Thanks for your reply.
This is still reproducible
- on Ubuntu 13.10 w/ LibreOffice 4.1.3.2 (from Ubuntu)
- on Ubuntu 13.10 w/ LibreOffice 4.2.0.2 (official debs [1])
A fresh LibreOffice profile (~/.libreoffice* and ~/.config/libreoffice*
moved out of the way) has been used for the second test.
Do you need any additional information?
[Bug 1198332] [NEW] Crash when using multi-touch input
2013-07-05 Thread Tobias Hoffmann
Public bug reported:
Reproducible crash:
1) start x
2) (terminal): xinput test-xi2 10
[10 is the device id, see below]
3) use touch device on the window a bit, use more than 2 fingers, and
occassionally click into the terminal window
4) xserver segfaults after at most a few tries of 3), i.e. less than 15 seconds
of trying
Output of xinput list:
Affected Versions (summary):
xserver-xorg-core_1.14.1-0ubuntu0.8_i386
xserver-xorg-core_1.13.3-0ubuntu6_i386
My base system is actually debian testing with a custom 3.10-rc4 x86_64
kernel, but the crash is clearly related to the (manually installed and
newer) ubuntu xorg packages and not the base system.
[Bug 1196679] [NEW] [Upstream] Most recent change in presentation not saved when using animations
2013-07-01 Thread Christian Hoffmann
Public bug reported:
Problem description:
LibreOffice Impress discards changes to documents without notice in certain
circumstances. It happens when the object in question is part of a custom
animation and if no other content is modified before saving.
This is actually really annoying as it may lead to whole paragraphs of
text getting lost or to other corrections not being saved (and as such,
errors or typos getting re-introduced without noticing).
Steps to reproduce:
1. Create an empty presentation
2. Add some text such as "Test0"
3. Select the entered text (or the parent text box) and add a custom animation
(doesn't matter which, but let's say "Appear")
4. Save and close the document
5. Open it again and modify the text (Make "Test0" read "Text1")
6. Without editing anything else, click save (or press Ctrl+S) and close the
presentation
7. Re-open again and notice that the last change did not get saved (the page
still reads "Test0")
Current behavior:
The most recent change done to any animated item is not saved, unless something
else is modified afterwards.
Above test case shows "Test0".
Expected behavior:
Everything which is visible on-screen should be saved to the file and should
look the same after re-opening the file.
Above test cases should yield "Test1".
Further information:
- The list of custom animations does not update properly either (i.e. when
"Test0" is changed to "Test1", the animation list still says "Test0" unless
something else is edited or focus is switched to another slide).
- While I am not familiar with the LibreOffice code, it looks like some event
is not fired in this case which would usually be responsible for updating
internal state at several places (internal ODF representation, custom animation
list pane).
- Removing the custom animation and repeating the test (changing content,
saving, reloading) will still show the bug! The bug only vanishes if the
document is re-opened after the custom animation has been removed.
Environment:
- This was first noticed on Kubuntu 13.04 with the bundled libreoffice-4.0.2.2
- also reproduced on: Ubuntu 13.04, bundled libreoffice-4.0.2.2, different
machine
- also reproduced on: Ubuntu 13.04, libreoffice.org's 4.0.4.2 packages
(LibreOffice_4.0.4.2_Linux_x86-64_deb)
- also reproduced on: Ubuntu 13.04, libreoffice.org's 4.1.0.1 packages
(LibreOffice_4.1.0.1_Linux_x86-64_deb)
(all tests on x86_64)
[Bug 1187132] [NEW] Fax sending broken (after upgrading to raring?)
2013-06-03 Thread Christian Hoffmann
Public bug reported:
(Fix/Workaround included, see below)
Reproduce:
Try sending a fax using the fax printer from Evince, LibreOffice, etc.
Expected result:
Target phone number selection dialog should appear (from hplip).
Actual result:
Nothing visible happens / dialog doesn't appear.
OR
Reproduce:
Try sending a fax using the hp-sendfax utility. Cover page dialog appears,
continue to the next step, add a PDF file (or anything else).
Expected result:
File should be listed in the file overview in hp-sendfax's dialog.
Actual result:
Returning from the file selection dialog does not trigger any visible action
(selected file does not appear in the file list).
Debugging:
Saw this in the syslog:
hpcupsfax[12947]: common/utils.c 253: Failed to check directory
[/var/log/hp/tmp] errno[2]
... so I created /var/log/hp/tmp (parent directory already existed).
Tried sending a fax again, saw this in the syslog:
hpcupsfax[31352]: prnt/hpijs/hpcupsfax.cpp 685: ERROR: Unable to open Fax
output file - /var/log/hp/tmp/hplipfaxLog_sPUT65 for writing
Played with permissions on /var/log/hp/tmp until it worked. root:lp/775
sounds halfway sane and works for me. lp:.../755 would probably be okay
as well.
Suggested fix:
Ensure that /var/log/hp/tmp gets pre-created with sane permissions or
patch/configure hplip to use another path maybe (?).
I am not entirely sure when this bug got introduced. I had sent my last fax
about two months ago, so it was certainly before the upgrade to raring.
I assume this bug is not printer-specific.
[Bug 1154318] Re: pdftopdf assert failure: EPSON-Epson-Stylus-SX430: filter/pdftopdf/qpdf_pdftopdf.cc:34: Rotation getRotate(QPDFObjectHandle): Assertion `rot==0.0' failed.
2013-03-14 Thread Tobias Hoffmann
Sure, there should not... and when compiled with -DNDEBUG it actually would not
exit, but just assume 0.0 degrees rotation...
The assert basically was there, because this particular function only
implemented the simple cases (taking care of nearly all pdfs in the wild) and
was not touched since then...
I've updated bzr (revision 7046) to handle at least all multiples of 90
correctly (i.e. also negative ones) now and throw an exception when
encountering a still unexpected value.
This may or may not fix pdftopdf for this particular pdf.
Either try the offending pdf with the current bazaar version of cups-filters
(and watch out for 'Unexpected /Rotation value: ...' exceptions in the log), or
I can check the pdf file (and make further changes to pdftopdf, if necessary).
2013-03-14 Thread Tobias Hoffmann
The assert triggers because the PDF to be processed contains a /Rotation
key which is not equal to 0,  90, 180 or 270.
Basically there are three possibilities:
 1) The pdf uses a value not allowed by the pdf specification.
 2) The value is close, but not exactly equal to one of the above rotation
values
 3) The value is not normalized to [0;360) but is e.g. -90.
So to fix this I have to know what value the offending PDF uses instead,
maybe you can attach the file?
[Bug 1154261] [NEW] TeXstudio build configuration
2013-03-12 Thread Tim Hoffmann
Public bug reported:
I noticed that the TeXstudio package is based on a debug build. However,
the TeXstudio debug build runs some automated tests at startup which are
not intended for end-users.
We've now added an option to remove these tests also in the debug build (from
rev. 3823 on). Please set an additional preprocessor define NO_TESTS when
compiling TXS for end-users.
appending DEFINES+=NO_TESTS to the qmake call should do. Alternatively, if you
are using the BUILD.sh script, it will now ask for this option.
Thanks for packaging TeXstudio.
[Bug 1137438] Re: texttopdf crashes while printing on ubuntu 11.10
2013-03-01 Thread Tobias Hoffmann
Actually two issues are involved here, a corrupt pdf is generated for
certain utf-8 title-parameters (where the filename is passed in), and,
when 'prettyprint' is enabled, a texttopdf assertion fails('crash'),
when different utf-8 ranges are used in the title.
Both are fixed in bazaar revision 7041.
[Bug 1059350] Re: Failure to suspend due to ethernet controller
2013-02-26 Thread Marcus Hoffmann
I also occasionally have this problem on a Thinkpad X230, but it is
quite difficult to debug, because it happens around after a week of
uptime.
The device which is unable to suspend is the following:
00:19.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82579LM Gigabit Network
Connection (rev 04)
Ubuntu 12.10, kernel: Ubuntu 3.5.0-25.38-generic 3.5.7.4
[Bug 923955] Re: pdftopdf filter fails to output form field values
2013-02-19 Thread Tobias Hoffmann
Sorry, I forgot to subscribe and did not get your comment by mail...
I think a recent evince will directly send pdf (and not ps) to cups. But it
will 'rewrite' quite heavily.
And yes, PDF is the new internal default format in the linux printing chain.
This has more to do with having the appropriate cups-filters than the cups
version, though.
AFAICT it probably was the pdf-ps pipeline.
But, regarding this bug, I have tracked down the problem in libqpdf to
the use of stale object-cache entries, and reported it to the author;
the next libqpdf update will fix this bug.
[Bug 923955] Re: pdftopdf filter fails to output form field values
2013-02-10 Thread Tobias Hoffmann
Form values are also lost with the old pdftopdf implementation (used in
cups-filters before 1.0.21).
Probably only the pdf->ps workflow ever worked.
The form values are also lost by just using qpdf to 'non-destructively' rewrite
the pdf. Therefore the problem is already present in the underlying libqpdf.
The provided pdf files all use xref-streams, which I'm currently not able to
accurately debug.
I have some faint memories that to enable form-filling with Adobe Reader
the original pdf has to be specially 'signed', and this signature can
only be generated by the Adobe Acrobat Professional application... this
might play a role here.
Another thing: When I use evince to print the form, it seems to work.
Could it be that the problem only occurs when using Adobe Reader to fill and/or
print the form? Or at least that it works, when evince is used to fill/print?
[Bug 1111292] Re: Duplex printing on Ubuntu 12.10 is taking additional blank paper with 'scale to fit' option selected
2013-02-06 Thread Tobias Hoffmann
Till, that's very strange. I can only reproduce the bug with rev 7035,
but not with 7036.
[Bug 1111292] Re: Duplex printing on Ubuntu 12.10 is taking additional blank paper with 'scale to fit' option selected
2013-02-05 Thread Tobias Hoffmann
A very similar problem has been fixed very recently,
  https://bugs.linuxfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1088
which is fixed in bazaar revision 7036.
Please check if the bug still occurs with the current bzr version of
pdftopdf/cups-filters.
I can't reproduce fix on precise. I've used ppa:juju/0.6 (r608), grub-pc
is ubuntu3.8, juju-origin: proposed, but I still get the same error.
[Bug 578045] Re: Upgrading packaged Ubuntu application unreasonably involves upgrading entire OS
2013-01-19 Thread Mandrit Hoffmann
I'm also confident that Ubuntu and MPT are aware of the seriousness of
this problem ("UDS N Monday plenary: Getting great applications on
Ubuntu" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GT5fUcMUfYg ).
While the lack of separation between system and application parts was noticed
as problem several times and years before:
Benjamin Smedberg (Mozilla) "Is Ubuntu an Operating System?"
http://benjamin.smedbergs.us/blog/2006-10-04/is-ubuntu-an-operating-system/
Tony Mobily (Free Software Magazine) "2009: software installation in GNU/Linux
is still broken -- and a path to fixing it"
http://www.freesoftwaremagazine.com/articles/2009_software_installation_linux_broken_and_path_fixing_it
Ingo Molnár (RedHat) "Technology: What ails the Linux desktop? "
https://plus.google.com/109922199462633401279/posts/HgdeFDfRzNe
, it can be still fixed. :)
And I would argue that Ubuntu is among all the linux distributions the
only one capable, user-focussed  and undogmatic enough for doing so.
Ubuntu has proved that they are not too afraid to take serious (and
sometimes painful) steps to fix long standing architectural problems in
the linux world. While shifting long existing mechanisms and habits
might be the hardest part, at least several technologies and
implementations are already available, just pick one or more
(Zeroinstall, Gobolinux, portable linux apps, autopackage, FatELF, nix
package manager and many more).
So, please Ubuntu, fix this problem by a consequent step towards a
"platform and independent software provider" architecture, I count on
you! :)
