[Bug 1944951] Re: delayed display update / konsole artifacts

2021-09-24 Thread Horst Schirmeier
I went back to konsole 20.04.0 (built from upstream sources) and still
see these artifacts. Consequently, something else in the xorg/KDE
software stack must be responsible; I'm not sure how to proceed with
debugging, though.

[Bug 1944951] [NEW] delayed display update / konsole artifacts

2021-09-24 Thread Horst Schirmeier
Public bug reported:

Since one of the recent Impish updates, konsole shows artifacts and
reacts slowly. In fact, it looks like screen updates are pipelined on
pixel-group granularity somehow, and the pipeline isn't drained
completely: When more text goes to the terminal (e.g., I type
something), existing artifacts vanish, but new ones (in the new text)
appear.

Unfortunately, I don't see any of the previous konsole .deb releases
(e.g. 4:21.08.1-1 or 4:21.08.0-1) on the Ubuntu mirrors, so I cannot go
back and simply check whether the newest konsole updates are the
culprit. I'm actually not sure whether konsole is responsible at all, I
originally intended to file against xorg; however, I see those artifacts
in neither xterm nor gnome-terminal.

Find attached a screenshot (taken with an external camera; these
artifacts cannot be recorded using a screenshot tool such as
imagemagick's "import") where I ran "ls" in /tmp, and cleared the
terminal with ^L afterwards. The screen is still littered with remains
of the "ls" output. It took a few tries to get artifacts this
pronounced, though; usually they only concern small parts of the
terminal.

[Bug 1939377] [NEW] kscreen does not return to original resolution after "Switch to laptop screen"

2021-08-10 Thread Horst Schirmeier
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:
- attach external Full-HD monitor (e.g. via HDMI)
- use kscreen to "Unify outputs" (Fn+F7 on my Lenovo T460p, or using the
"Display Configuration" tray applet)
- internal monitor is now down to 1920x1080, showing the same content as the
external one
- use kscreen to "Switch to laptop screen"

Expected behavior (seen up to and including Ubuntu 21.04):
- external monitor goes black
- internal monitor returns to native resolution (2560x1440 in my case)

Actual behavior (since Ubuntu 21.10):
- external monitor goes black
- internal monitor stays at 1920x1080

[Bug 1873400] Re: obs-studio FFMPEG VAAPI encoding fails

2020-04-17 Thread Horst Schirmeier
Ah! I wasn't aware that the -shaders variant is the non-free one.
Thanks!

-> This fixes my issue for the most part. OBS Studio now encodes using VAAPI,
   seemingly using the iHD driver.

However, selecting "CQP" in the OBS GUI still leads to "rate_control: CBR" in
the log. Is this a VAAPI limitation, or a possible OBS bug?

[Bug 1873400] Re: obs-studio FFMPEG VAAPI encoding fails

Side note: OBS's error message suggests that the iHD driver only can do
CQP (not CBR). However, when I set Rate Control to "CQP" in the OBS
GUI, I get the *same* error message on the console saying "rate_control:
CBR" (!) and "Driver does not support any RC mode compatible with
selected options (supported modes: CQP)."

Conclusions from this observation:
1. i965 and iHD seem to be (to a certain extent?) interchangeable for my Intel
Skylake CPU.
2. i965 works with CBR.
3. The OBS GUI may not properly forward the CQP rate control setting to the
encoder (possibly a separate bug).

[Bug 1873400] [NEW] obs-studio FFMPEG VAAPI encoding fails

2020-04-17 Thread Horst Schirmeier
Public bug reported:

OBS Studio fails to record using the VAAPI hardware encoding of Intel
Skylake CPUs (Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-6700HQ in my case): "Starting the
output failed. Please check the log for details."

info: [FFMPEG VAAPI encoder: 'streaming_h264'] settings:
device: /dev/dri/renderD128
rate_control: CBR
profile: 578
level: 40
qp: 0
bitrate: 2500
maxrate: 2500
keyint: 60
width: 1920
height: 1080
b-frames: 0

with selected options (supported modes: CQP).
warning: [FFMPEG VAAPI encoder: 'streaming_h264'] Failed to open VAAPI codec:
Invalid argument

STEPS TO REPRODUCE:
- Start obs, Settings, Output, Output Mode "Advanced"
- Streaming, Encoder: FFMPEG VAAPI
- Start recording

EXPECTED RESULT:
- H.264-encoded recording starting with low CPU usage

ACTUAL RESULT:
- Error message popping up: "Starting the output failed. Please check the log
for details."
- Log see above

ANALYSIS AND WORKAROUND:
- vainfo reports this (before I thought bug #1872875 was responsible here):
  vainfo: VA-API version: 1.7 (libva 2.6.0)
vainfo: Driver version: Intel iHD driver for Intel(R) Gen Graphics - 20.1.1 ()
- Workaround: Overriding iHD with i965 fixes the issue for me. Start obs with
the LIBVA_DRIVER_NAME environment variable set to "i965" for my Intel Skylake
CPU.

[Bug 1872551] [NEW] kubuntu-driver-manager: nvidia driver version switch fails

2020-04-13 Thread Horst Schirmeier
Public bug reported:

Switching the Nvidia driver version with kubuntu-driver-manager doesn't
work anymore: Selecting a different driver version (nvidia-driver-440
instead of the currently selected / installed -390) and clicking "Apply
Changes" has no effect and produces this error message in the terminal:

NameError: name 'get_dependencies' is not defined

Steps to reproduce:
- sudo kubuntu-driver-manager
- Under "Additional Drivers", select a different Nvidia driver version
(in my case: 440 instead of 390)
- Click "Apply Changes"
- (observe error message in the terminal)

Expected result:

[Bug 1871710] [NEW] WiFi hotspot with WPA/WPA2 Personal security doesn't work with Windows 10 client

2020-04-08 Thread Horst Schirmeier
Public bug reported:

When I create a shared WiFi ("hotspot") in the "Connections - System
Settings Module" with enabled WPA/WPA2 security, I cannot get Windows 10
clients to connect. Android 10 connects to this shared WiFi without
problems. Using the "Hotspot" button behind the system-tray network
icon works with Windows 10 clients (but creates an open/unencrypted
WiFi).

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Go to System Settings -> Network / Connections
2. Add a new network ("+"), Connection Type: "Wi-Fi (shared)"
3. Pick an appropriate connection and SSID name (e.g. "xyz", "xyz"). Mode:
"Access Point".
4. "Security" tab: Security "WPA/WPA2 Personal", pick a password. Save.
5. "Connect" to this newly created network, enabling the Wi-Fi access point.
6. Try to connect to this AP with a Windows 10 client.

OBSERVED RESULT
1. When clicking on the "xyz" Wi-Fi, Windows 10 (EDU, Version 1909, Build
18363.418) asks for an eight-digit PIN instead of a password, unlike for other
WiFis. It is, however, also possible to click a link below and enter the
previously set AP password.
2. Windows 10's Wi-Fi dialog reports that it cannot connect to this network
("Keine Verbindung mit diesem Netzwerk möglich"). This is reproducible with
different Windows 10 machines.
3. A Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact with Android 10 connects to the "xyz" AP without
problems.

EXPECTED RESULT
Windows 10 should connect to the AP without problems, just like Android 10
does, or just as Windows 10 does to the unencrypted AP.

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Windows: Windows 10 Education, 1909, Build 18363.418

[Bug 1866984] Re: hibernate-disk resumes instantly

2020-03-11 Thread Horst Schirmeier
This seems to be caused by Focal's 5.4 kernel: after booting Ubuntu
19.10's linux-image-5.3.0-40-generic (5.3.0-40.32), which remained on
the system after upgrading to 20.04, hibernate-disk (and resume
afterwards) works fine.

[Bug 1866984] Re: hibernate-disk resumes instantly

2020-03-11 Thread Horst Schirmeier
To ensure that hibernate/resume *should* work properly in a KVM
environment, I reproduced the above steps with Ubuntu 19.10 Eoan Desktop
(x86_64). After applying one missing step (see below), hibernate-disk
successfully hibernated the machine state in /swapfile and powered off
the VM; restarting kvm resumed the state as expected.

The additionally necessary step to make resume work properly (hibernate-
disk works with the above steps alone, but resume doesn't):

-> add resume=/swapfile to the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT string in
/etc/default/grub; run update-grub

[Bug 1866984] [NEW] hibernate-disk resumes instantly

2020-03-11 Thread Horst Schirmeier
Public bug reported:

Since upgrading from 19.10 (eoan) to 20.04 (focal), hibernate-disk fails
to properly hibernate and shutdown the system; instead, Ubuntu resumes
instantly.

$ sudo hibernate-disk
[sudo] password for xyz:
hibernate-disk:Warning: Tuxonice binary signature file not found.
$

(Note that this warning has been there earlier and is presumably not
associated with this bug.)

Expected: Switch to console, memory-page writeout progress indication,
poweroff

Observed: Switch to console, very quickly switch back to X11

[Bug 1826319] Re: Please upgrade cgdb to newest version (0.7.0)

2019-11-02 Thread Horst Schirmeier
This is no longer a mere feature request: cgdb 0.6.7 doesn't work
properly with Ubuntu's GDB 8.2.91 (Ubuntu 19.04) or GDB 8.3 (Ubuntu
19.10) as they use colored output by default, which cgdb can only deal
with starting with version 0.7.0. See bug #1850993.

[Bug 1850993] Re: cgdb shows escape sequence fragments instead of colors in gdb terminal

2019-11-02 Thread Horst Schirmeier
Further investigation reveals that this is actually an upstream cgdb
0.6.7 deficiency. Newer GDBs do output coloring, which cgdb can deal
with starting with version 0.7.0. In other words, when Ubuntu moved to
a newer GDB version, it should also have bumped cgdb to 0.7.0 or newer.

Possible workarounds:

 - Disable GDB colors when running cgdb:
cgdb -ex 'set style enabled off' a.out
(probably use a bash alias cgdb="cgdb -ex 'set style enabled off'")

GDB still uses colors while it starts up, but doesn't during use.

 - Disable GDB colors permanently: add "set style enabled off" to
~/.gdbinit

For a proper fix, Ubuntu should switch to cgdb 0.7.0 or newer. See also
bug #1826319.

[Bug 1829820] [NEW] radare2-cutter version mismatch with radare2

2019-05-21 Thread Horst Schirmeier
Public bug reported:

Every time when starting /usr/bin/cutter, a popup window declares

  Version mismatch!

  The version used to compile
  Cutter (3.2.1) does not match
  the binary version of radare2

[Bug 1827508] [NEW] LibreOffice Impress: presentation mode shows black screen instead of slides

2019-05-03 Thread Horst Schirmeier
Public bug reported:

With a dual-screen setup (e.g., notebook monitor plus video projector on
HDMI cable), when starting a presentation in LO Impress (Slide Show ->
Start from first slide, or F5), the external monitor turns black with
something that looks like scrollbars to the right and bottom, while the
primary monitor only shows the slide editor instead of the presenter
console.

Steps to reproduce:
 - Install libreoffice 1:6.2.2-0ubuntu2 in Ubuntu 19.04.
 - Attach secondary monitor / projector. Extend desktop to the right.
 - Start soffice, create new Impress presentation using an arbitrary template.
 - Press F5.

Expected behavior:
 - LO Impress shows presenter console on primary and the first slide on
secondary monitor.

Actual behavior:
 - Slide editor on primary, black screen with scroll bars to the right and
bottom on secondary monitor.

Workaround:
 - Click around on the black area, the presentation (together with the
presenter console) may show up at some point.
 - Or install LibreOffice 6.2.3.2 from libreoffice.org, works out of the box.

Confirming for Liberation Mono. This just seriously bit me when
exchanging LO Impress files with a colleague. (Took me a while to
figure out). Temporarily fixed this by installing LO 6.0.4 from
libreoffice.org in /opt, which happens to ship its own version of the
Liberation fonts.

[Bug 1777709] [NEW] ubuntu-bug xserver-xorg-video-intel shows bogus dialog

2018-06-19 Thread Horst Schirmeier
Public bug reported:

Running "ubuntu-bug xserver-xorg-video-intel" as a normal user pops up a
bogus dialog after a few seconds:

[i] text

[Yes] [No] [Cancel]

There seems to be a descriptive message missing in place of the "text"
placeholder.

[Bug 1777707] [NEW] xorg freezes and crashes while using LibreOffice Impress

2018-06-19 Thread Horst Schirmeier
Public bug reported:

After using LibreOffice Impress (6.0.3-0ubuntu1) for a while, X.org
freezes for several seconds; the mouse pointer is still movable, but
neither LibreOffice nor KDE/Plasma reacts to it anymore. Then X.org
crashes and brings me back to the login screen.

[Bug 1763302] [NEW] prime-select fails to switch to nvidia profile (/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-nvidia.conf missing)

Without, LightDM comes up as expected.

[Bug 299158] Re: Liberation Mono, Droid Sans Mono: Combining diacritics out of place

2018-03-14 Thread Horst Schirmeier
This is still broken in Ubuntu 18.04 bionic. It's notoriously annoying
with text or filenames coming from OSX, which keeps diacritics separate
from the character they're combined with, also for characters that have
a distinct unicode code point for the combined variant.

[Bug 1751783] [NEW] LibreOffice PDF export crashes

Public bug reported:

Since the LibreOffice update to 5.4.5-0ubuntu0.17.10.1, PDF export

reproducibly in at least Impress, Writer and Calc.

Upstream seems to be aware of this issue:

[Bug 1662244] Re: lightdm causes all greeters to fail to start

2017-11-20 Thread Horst Schirmeier
Please reopen. This just bit me on 17.10, using some manually
configured soft and hard memlock limits in /etc/security/limits.conf:

*   softmemlock 262144
*   hardmemlock 262144

As these limits *increase* max locked memory from 64 to 262144 kB, it
took me quite some time (and a lucky google hit on this bug report) to
locate this as the cause.

[Bug 1733103] Re: DNS hostname resolution fails intermittently

2017-11-18 Thread Horst Schirmeier
Note that on my machine (clean 16.10 install, upgraded to 17.04 and
later 17.10), DNS resolution already partially broke in 17.04 (involving
the switch to systemd-resolve). With Ubuntu 17.04, DNS resolution was
broken after suspending, moving to a different WiFi, and resuming the
machine. This could be manually fixed by manually running dhclient.
This does not fix the abovementioned issue, though.

** Description changed:

Since upgrading to 17.10, hostname resolution (via, e.g., Firefox or the
"host" command-line tool) does not work reliably anymore. Once hostname
resolution fails (Firefox 57: "Hmm. We're having trouble finding that
site."), manually resolving the host via "systemd-resolve" succeeds and
temporarily allows Firefox to also resolve that host. After a few
minutes, resolution of the same host fails again.

  Example with command-line "host" utility:

  $ host www.heise.de
;; connection timed out; no servers could be reached
- $ cat /etc/resolv.conf
+ $ cat /etc/resolv.conf
  # Dynamic resolv.conf(5) file for glibc resolver(3) generated by resolvconf(8)

[Bug 1720519] Re: KDE/Kubuntu: Module "module-switch-on-connect" should be loaded once at most. Refusing to load.

2017-10-21 Thread Horst Schirmeier
Update: After reinstalling pulseaudio, alsa-base, pulseaudio-module-
bluetooth and plasma-pa (for KDE's volume control applet), the problem
reappeared. Commenting out "load-module module-switch-on-connect" in
/etc/pulse/default.pa (see comment #4) seems to fix the issue
permanently; the module still seems to be loaded due to some other means
of triggering the load (see output of: pactl list modules).

I'm seeing this as well on a machine with a clean 17.04 installation
that was upgraded to 17.10, using KDE (sound: Intel HDA). Steps in
comment #2 fixed this problem, at least temporarily.

[Bug 1654875] Re: Konsole font rendering: glyphs cut off vertically

2017-01-12 Thread Horst Schirmeier
Update: This seems to be triggered by a fractional (> 1, but < 2, 1.4 in
my case) Displays -> Scale -> Scale Factor setting (which is meant for
HiDPI displays, and probably for people with sight issues), not "Force
fonts DPI".

[Bug 1654875] [NEW] Konsole font rendering: glyphs cut off vertically

2017-01-08 Thread Horst Schirmeier
Public bug reported:

Depending on the text-cursor position (e.g., in vim), glyphs in a
complete text line in Konsole are cut off vertically. These characters
need not be fancy Unicode ones, plain ASCII suffices.

Konsole font is the default one here (Oxygen Mono, 9.0), but due to my
Hi-DPI display (14" with 2560x1440px) I set "Force fonts DPI" to 192 in
KDE's Settings->Appearance->Font->Fonts.

This seems to have already been reported and fixed upstream, it may suffice to
back-port the patch.

[Bug 1652612] [NEW] KDE screen locker briefly shows desktop after resume from S3

2016-12-26 Thread Horst Schirmeier
Public bug reported:

After resuming from S3 (suspend to RAM), KDE's screen locker briefly
shows desktop/application contents before locking the screen, possibly

than one second).

[Bug 1647364] [NEW] gnupg: No secret key (gpg-agent / pinentry interaction issue)

2016-12-05 Thread Horst Schirmeier
Public bug reported:

Since migration from gnupg 1.x to 2.1.15, gpg cannot decrypt my files
anymore:

$ gpg -d < foo.gpg
gpg: encrypted with 4096-bit ELG key, ID X, created -XX-XX
  "XXX "
gpg: public key decryption failed: Operation cancelled
gpg: decryption failed: No secret key

Increasing the gpg-agent loglevel reveals the following (note that in
the whole process I was never prompted for my passphrase):

gpg-agent[11397] DBG: chan_5 -> INQUIRE PINENTRY_LAUNCHED 11477
gpg-agent[11397] DBG: chan_5 <- END
gpg-agent[11397] DBG: chan_6 -> SETKEYINFO n/X
gpg-agent[11397] DBG: chan_6 <- OK
gpg-agent[11397] DBG: chan_6 -> SETDESC Please enter the passphrase to unlock
the OpenPGP secret key: ..
gpg-agent[11397] DBG: chan_6 <- OK
gpg-agent[11397] DBG: chan_6 -> SETPROMPT Passphrase:
gpg-agent[11397] DBG: chan_6 <- OK
gpg-agent[11397] DBG: chan_6 -> [[Confidential data not shown]]
gpg-agent[11397] DBG: chan_6 <- [[Confidential data not shown]]
gpg-agent[11397] DBG: error calling pinentry: Operation cancelled
gpg-agent[11397] DBG: chan_6 -> BYE
gpg-agent[11397] failed to unprotect the secret key: Operation cancelled
gpg-agent[11397] failed to read the secret key
gpg-agent[11397] command 'PKDECRYPT' failed: Operation cancelled
gpg-agent[11397] DBG: chan_5 -> ERR 83886179 Operation cancelled
gpg-agent[11397] DBG: chan_5 <- [eof]

This looks a lot like https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-
bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=839547 -- which has a fix in pinentry/0.9.7-6 but
hasn't made it to Ubuntu 16.10 yet.

Workaround: Disable dnsmasq by commenting it out the dns=dnsmasq line

sudo service docker.io restart). Alternatively enable the commented out

(and also restart the docker.io service). The latter workaround of
course requires the 8.8.8.8 / 8.8.4.4 servers to be reachable from your
network.

[Bug 1387875] [NEW] docker.io host name resolution fails after switching networks

2014-10-30 Thread Horst Schirmeier
Public bug reported:

When switching networks, docker.io (1.0.1~dfsg1-0ubuntu1~ubuntu0.14.04.1
from trusty-updates) does not notice when the contents of
/etc/resolv.conf change. This is a quite common situation when using a
notebook with dnsmasq disabled in
/etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf. (Using dnsmasq together with
docker.io is out of the question due to bug #1387805.)

In the following example, 99.99.99.99 is a placeholder for the DNS
server address in the network the notebook was connected to previously.
This IP is not mentioned in /etc/resolv.conf anymore. From the current
network, this IP is not reachable.

[Bug 1226932] Re: Unable to Connect to Wi-Fi with Saved Password

Is the correct password mentioned in /etc/NetworkManager/system-

replacing password-flags=1 with password=MYPASSWORD fixed automatic
