[Bug 1153260] Re: cheese audio lags one second

2013-03-12 Thread Ian Clark
i would be able to test it, except i only have one computer and i use
this computer for work. i.e., if i bork it i can't get money for food.
is this the only way to confirm the bug?

maybe a few months later if i get another machine i could try it.

[Bug 1153260] [NEW] cheese audio lags one second

2013-03-10 Thread Ian Clark
Public bug reported:

hi i'm running xubuntu 12.04.2 with cheese 3.4.1 and a webcam Z-Star
Microelectronics ZC0301 USB WebCam and a standard mic.

in ubuntu 10.04 cheese, the cam and mic worked. also youtube recording
through flash worked. but always under 10.04 the webcam gave low-res,
choppy output.

now with 12.04.2 xubuntu, the output is very clear! the mic works, too, *but it
is delayed by a second*.
interestingly, youtube webcam video upload does not work at all. google
hangouts work fine.

i open up cheese, the cam gives a good picture. i hit record video and
it starts to record, but there's a sort of flash, and after that flash
of white over the picture, the audio starts, but it is already quite
late. this ruins my recordings. currently cheese records in webm. if i
open a webm file in avidemux, the colors are wrong and the audio runs at
double speed and i sound like a chipmunk. if i open the same file in
firefox or OpenShot, the file plays fine, but then you can hear the
audio is way behind.

cat /proc/version_signature
Ubuntu 3.2.0-38.61-generic 3.2.37

thanks in advance for any help you might offer.

[Bug 1152851] Re: xubuntu deletes workspaces

2013-03-09 Thread Ian Clark
they say my window manager crashed:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1979689

you hit alt f2 and run
xfwm4 --replace
to fix it.

this solution was written a year ago. if this happens often in xubuntu
desktop, this is a major bug. it kills the whole system and the user
doesn't see why.

[Bug 1152851] [NEW] xubuntu deletes workspaces

2013-03-08 Thread Ian Clark
Public bug reported:

i've always had three workspaces. today i turn on the computer and only
one workspace is visible. i hit preferences and see that the number of
workspaces is displayed as three, but there is only one workspace
listed.

this is one of many new problems i discovered today after updates
yesterday for xubuntu 12.04. i also cannot resize windows nor access
menus nor right click. i will file these as separate bugs.

[Bug 713611] [NEW] iBus flashing and will not input Chinese consistently

2011-02-05 Thread Ian Clark
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ibus

I enable iBus pinyin Chinese input with control spacebar, and the menu
keeps flashing. When I begin to type some words can be inputed, while
others will not be inputted while the menu flashes off.

Running iBus 1.3.10, Ubuntu 10.10, trying to use Chinese pinyin input.

Status in “ekiga” package in Ubuntu: Incomplete

 Bug description:
I upgraded from Hardy to Intrepid, and suddenly my mic was not detected
anymore. Running amixer set 'Capture' cap was the only way to get the mic
detected (GUI methods didn't work) in other apps, but Ekiga still will not
 detect it.

When running the druid I got the following error message when hitting test
 for audio:
 Failed to open the device
Impossible to open the selected audio device (Default) for playing. Please
check your audio setup, the permissions and that the device is not busy.

 1. Skype detects the mic, as does Audacity and Voicerecorder

 2. When running Ekiga in terminal, the following error is given:
ALSA lib pcm.c:2202:(snd_pcm_open_noupdate) Unknown PCM cards.pcm.default

 3. Though Skype detects the mic, it still gives a similar error in terminal:
ALSA lib pcm.c:2202:(snd_pcm_open_noupdate) Unknown PCM cards.pcm.hdmi

[Bug 227159] Re: Single Chinese font on abiword-2.4.6 are difficult to read and use

2010-02-27 Thread Ian Clark
CD burning is broken on my current version of Ubuntu (Karmic). AbiWord
runs painfully slow in Karmic in combination with Ibus now, to the point
where it's unusable and I've removed it. I'm also not a dev and cannot
run alpha versions of Ubuntu and have no computers that are used for
testing. I don't understand how to install programs while using a live
CD.

I would be glad to try this again when the distribution upgrade comes,
though.

I misread your meaning there, sorry about that. You're idea is to test

OK I'm downloading 9.04 (gnome) and will give it a try from a live CD.
I have Kubuntu 9.04 and sound worked out well with it after all the

stuff. I'd like to try a Gnome version anyway because I think Kdenlive
will work fine on it, and it will support Chinese input better.

[Bug 56444] Re: Easy double-sided printing

2009-06-13 Thread Ian Clark
Just got a CUPS update a couple days ago via Ubuntu updates. When I
went to print with my Samsung ML-1430 today, I found that the interface
is changed in both Abiword and OOO, and I can no longer specify
(manually) to print odds and then evens (to print both sides). Now
there is a range feature which doesn't even allow me to type in the
number of the page, but for a five-page document I'd have to click the
first field's up arrow four times from one to five just to get a five
to five range, to simple print the fifth page. However made this
change needs his head examined.

In Abiword, there is a choice I can check called selection, but
there's nothing after it that I can specify. Under OOO, the selection
choice is grayed out.

Why is it that as I use Ubuntu (starting from 7.10), the features get
less and less? Why should I be able to print more conveniently in 2006
than in 2009?

[Bug 249842] Re: Removing Buddies causes Buddy Synchronization error

2009-04-29 Thread Ian Clark
The buddy synchronization error is now fixed by simply disabling the
evolution plugin. The inability to log in a few months ago was fixed by
using MSN pecan. I'm not willing to try Jaunty, as moving to the last
non-LTS release (Intrepid) has been a nightmare. Being suddenly without
sound, no Skype etc. has not been fun. I've been troubleshooting these
problems for week in and week out, and finally have sound (though not
simultaneous) and Skype (only audio). Not in the mood for Jaunty!

[Bug 358470] Re: Sound stops working after nvidia-180-modaliases (180.11-0ubuntu1~intrepid1) installed

2009-04-19 Thread Ian Clark
Philinux has noticed this bug as well:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=6887446postcount=7

Interestingly, installing 180 and it's modalias removes the 177 driver.

I've rebooted and now under nvidia settings it correctly shows the 180
driver in use but in jockey, hardware drivers, it still shows the 173
and 177 driver with non in use. Bug I think maybe.

[Bug 358470] [NEW] Sound stops working after nvidia-180-modaliases (180.11-0ubuntu1~intrepid1) installed

2009-04-09 Thread Ian Clark
Public bug reported:

In Intrepid on 2009/04/09 the update manager showed
nvidia-180-modaliases (180.11-0ubuntu1~intrepid1) was newly installed,
which seems to have stopped me from getting any sound (mic input,
speakers out). Formerly I had sound.

Oddly my etc/groups file is now blank (!).

I followed the steps in Comprehensive Sound Problem Solutions Guide
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=205449 and got to running the
module-assistant (with code sudo module-assistant a-i alsa-source),
which allowed me to choose my driver (I need the intel8x0 driver or
ice1427, but I just went for the former), and the install did not
succeed. Log attached.

Later I ran sudo alsaconf which claimed to successfully configure the
ice1427 module, but I'm still with no sound. The error message
pertained to gstreamer plugins, which led me to check etc/groups file,
which shows up blank under sudo gedit etc/groups. This file looking
blank started after I ran alsaconf.

Any ideas on how to save my system?

2009-01-11 Thread Ian Clark
I haven't upgraded to 8.10 yet. I'll be upgrading to the next lts

After disabling that Piding worked fine again.

Now there's a new bug...after the release of the new MSN, MSN usually
only works on XP and won't log me in from Ubuntu. And that's the weird
thing - it will actually log me on 1 in 20 times. That's all the
feedback I have at this point. Big thanks!

[Bug 316022] Re: Cannot connect to MSN after realease of new MSN client

2009-01-11 Thread Ian Clark
That would mean installing 8.10 on my machine, running it, then
selecting system - admin - create a usb startup disk? The feature
create a usb startup disk is not available on 8.04 as far as I know.
If I could download the iso, copy it to my usb, then do it from there,
then sure, I'd check that.

Because my sources.lst may be messed up in some way, I have to do apt-
get update to find updates for my system. I did that, and the Pidgin
situation changed a bit, although I noticed no Pidgin-related items in
the updates (!).

Now I'm getting an error message: Unable to retrieve MSN address book. I
found this thread on this issue:
http://www.mail-archive.com/supp...@pidgin.im/msg01701.html
The issue is supposedly related to msnp14 or 15, which isn't even on my list of
plugins.

Any ideas on a fix for Ubuntu users?

[Bug 227159] Re: Chinese fonts on abiword-2.4.6 are ugly

2008-11-09 Thread Ian Clark
Yes I remember there was only one Chinese font. There are other open
fonts which could be used and that are used in OOo, all with the prefix
AR_PL which are very nice. They are included in 2.6.3 and the new
2.6.4 and they work well. This helps me use both OOo and AbiWord
without having to reformat the font each time I go from one to another.

Also I found out later that the font problem in Ubuntu's current AbiWord
mostly cuts down my ability to control the look of the Chinese type.
Having the AR_PL series helps me to choose my look.

Actually the problem with WenQuan Hei (the font mentioned before) in
AbiWord currently is that it displays pixelated at smaller display
resolutions. But I found out later if I zoomed closer or printed the
text, the text isn't actually pixelated.

I'm not on Ibex now, but on Heron.

[Bug 249842] Re: Removing Buddies causes Buddy Synchronization error

2008-07-18 Thread Ian Clark
Sorry I'm a noob. Then is there any other info I need to attach? A
config file, error message file?

Anyway here's a picture of the behavior. Notice how many error windows
are piled up at the bottom.

What sends these error messages, and is there any way I can have them
automatically answer no? They are quite annoying and if anyone is
willing to find out how to tackle it for me I'd be most grateful.

[Bug 229560] [NEW] Hardy startup and shutdown buggy

2008-05-12 Thread Ian Clark
Public bug reported:

Originally with my setup I had amazing startup and instant shutdown
times (with Gutsy). After upgrading to Hardy, I get a long black screen
on startup, and instead of an instant shutdown, there is a considerable
wait. Sometimes shutdown doesn't even work at all. I changed the boot
to verbose mode and noticed it was quite buggy.

[Bug 228074] Re: SCIM Smart Pinyin character table in strange position, forgets corrected position

I couldn't find ~/.scim/config. Am I typing this wrong? I also
searched for .scim from the file system and nothing came up.

I noticed the bug happened with AbiWord 2.6.3 (not in the repositories),
and indeed the placement is fine with other applications.

OK, it is an AbiWord bug, not a SCIM bug, but this bug is a known bug
and has been around for a while.

[Bug 228071] [NEW] Smart Pinyin's Complex Imput Lacks Common Words

2008-05-07 Thread Ian Clark
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: scim

In SCIM Smart Pinyin complex character mode, common characters and words
are missing from the dictionary/menu. This bug alone makes complex mode
useless, as needed character is totally missing from the menu and mode
needs to be switched to find character.

著“or着“ are totally gone. Common words containing those characters are
impossible to make. Common words like 裡面” 麵包“ ”捨得“ etc. give the
simplified words or don't come up with the word entirely.

Is there a way that I can work with the developer to fix these issues?

[Bug 228076] [NEW] Smart Pinyin's Character Menu Size Unadjustable

2008-05-07 Thread Ian Clark
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: scim

The character menu size should be adjustable in the SCIM Smart Pinyin
setup options.

Complex characters often get smudged or unreadable at small sizes.

[Bug 228074] [NEW] SCIM Smart Pinyin character table in strange position, forgets corrected position

2008-05-07 Thread Ian Clark
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: scim

Position of character menu in strange, upper left-hand position - away
from characters being inputted.

When position is corrected, menu stays in place for around one sentence,
then migrates back up to upper left-hand side.

I'd expect the menu to be below the characters being inputted (as before
Hardy release). After correction, I'd expect the menu to always stay in
that place.

[Bug 227159] [NEW] Chinese fonts on abiword-2.4.6 are ugly

2008-05-05 Thread Ian Clark
Public bug reported:

Originally AbiWord 2.4.6 in Ubuntu 7.10 included two Chinese fonts of
the AR PL series - one in a Kanji style, another in a print style.

I expected the settings and fonts for AbiWord to be maintained through
the upgrade to 8.04 Hardy Heron.

But after the upgrade, these two fonts were gone in AbiWord, and
replaced with the heinous 文泉驛正黑 - a pixelated font that appears to be
unfinished. (Fonts for Open Office were left untouched.)

I fixed the issue by installing 2.6.3 as described here:
http://abisource.com/wiki/Install_on_Ubuntu

Why doesn't Ubuntu simply provide abiword-2.6.3?
