After disabling all unofficial repos I did

grep disabled /var/log/dist-upgrade/main.log

It did not show anything.

Systemaktualisierung. Schauen Sie sich insbesondere »main.log« und
»apt.log« an.

[Bug 1890436] Re: VGA signal is ghosted and stretched (Intel® HD Graphics 2500)

2020-08-06 Thread Ioannis Barkas
Well this is a PC with onboard intel graphics. A memory issue would mean
RAM problem which is not the case here. I can see a visual corruption.
If you can't see it then there is nothing more to say here.

You are welcomed to see the dmesg and figure out what happens. There is
no hardware damage on my PC. This occurs with a specific BIOS setting as
I described above and it affects only ubuntu. Windows 10 2004 work fine
on my "damaged" PC. If you wish to get a screenshot from windows working
fine, I can upload it here.

I might test wayland at the evening but linux kernel detects the problem
and shouts about underrun error in FIFO A as the first attached image
with dmesg shows. So if you have anything usefull to write that is
related to this bug report, please do so. If you just continue to say
that my hardware is damaged you are free to close this bug right away. I
will try another distro and open another bug there...

[Bug 1890436] Re: VGA image is ghosted and stretched (LG L1953S)

2020-08-06 Thread Ioannis Barkas
Hello, thank you for your early reply! I am afraid that you haven't got
the big picture here. On my side, there is no doubt that I am getting a
visual corruption. Just take a look at the attached images.

The video signal is good since the monitor works normal when I enable
CSM setting in BIOS. As you have suggested, I used a different VGA cable
having double thickness than the initial one and I am still getting the
same behaviour. If it was a signalling issue the kernel would probably
not print any warning messages.

Since I have another VGA monitor on my desk, I went a step ahead and
connected this VGA monitor instead since I hadn't tested this case with
that monitor. As expected, I got exactly the same behaviour. That is
smooth display on VGA monitor when CSM is enabled and corruption when
CSM is disabled. As a proof of it, I am uploading images from the third
monitor. Take a closer look at the cursor as it has blank lines after
each horizontal line. As you can see, the same applies to fonts when
switching to console view. I am also uploading the X log with that
monitor.

[Bug 1890436] [NEW] Screen corruption with multi monitor setup

2020-08-05 Thread Ioannis Barkas
Public bug reported:

Hello, last week I was digging in the BIOS of my PC at work since I tried to
see if there is a way to update the dbx for secure boot. Since there was no
option to perform this task, I modified some settings. In detail, I disabled
CSM in BIOS and that's when hell broke loose!

To get an idea about the hardware, the Lenovo machine isn't running the
latest BIOS as its updater is broken and won't update it within win or
its ISO image. It uses the previous version released by its
manufacturer.

The machine has an XGA VGA monitor and a WQHD DP monitor. When CSM is enabled
the DP monitor is lit first and then the VGA one prior OS loading. When CSM is
disabled it goes the other way around. The VGA monitor is lit and the DP one
opens up during OS load. With CSM disabled the VGA monitor is the primary one
and it is corrupted as you can see on the pictures I have attached.
Interestingly printing screens within Ubuntu does not capture the corruption
problem I am getting as you can see on the pictures I have also attached.
Neither X log contains anything useful. The issue is repeatable on every boot.

As I have seen on other bug reports, I have enabled DRM debug, captured
the dmesg using a huge buffer to get it and have uploaded it as well. I
hope that it will help you track this issue down and fix it soon. Since
I will be away some days for vacation, I will have physical access to it
till this Friday and will get back to work at the 24th of August. In the
mean time, I hope that someone will pinpoint the root cause of it and
prepare a patch.

Since this machine is running w10 2004, it should be noted that in win I
do not get any corruption at all either in CSM mode or UEFI mode.

Also in Kubuntu 20.04 with KDE Plasma 5.18.5. Editing of

[Bug 1863934] [NEW] System/video freeze on AMD GPU using 5.3.0 kernel

2020-02-19 Thread Ioannis Ramfos
Public bug reported:

Following a kernel update on Kubuntu 18.04 from 5.0 to the latest hwe
version 5.3.0, the system started "freezing" after a few days of
operation (with the system being in suspend mode during most of each
day). With kernel 5.0 there was no such problem, even after many months
of operation (again with suspend/resume instead of shutting down). This
has happened each time I use the 5.3 kernel (4-5 times so far).

The actual behaviour is that the video froze, apart from the mouse
cursor that was moving normally but (seemingly) not activating anything.
To reboot gracefully, I tested Ctrl-Alt+F[1-3] to try to enable a
console (did not show a console), followed by Ctrl-Alt-Del, but it did
not work. There seemed to be some disk activity indicated by the LEDs.
To reboot the system, I used the SysRq sequence and the filesystem was
synced and the system was rebooted.

Additionally, there are some video glitches from time to time, but I
cannot find a usage pattern that produces them.

Attached is a dump from syslog showing something that seems like memory
leaks from the GPU.

[Bug 1830223] [NEW] gnome control center segmentation fault when clicking details tab

2019-05-23 Thread Ioannis Vardas
Public bug reported:

Description:Ubuntu 18.04.2 LTS
Release:18.04
gnome-control-center:
  Installed: 1:3.28.2-0ubuntu0.18.04.4
  Candidate: 1:3.28.2-0ubuntu0.18.04.4
  Version table:
 *** 1:3.28.2-0ubuntu0.18.04.4 500

Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
 1:3.28.1-0ubuntu1 500
500 http://gr.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu bionic/main amd64 Packages

When opening the gnome-control-center it may close after some seconds.
Additionally, if I open "Details" tab it closes and returns a segmentation
fault. I know this issue is not new but I have
experienced it now.

[Bug 1761381] Re: virtualbox-dkms 5.2.8-dfsg-5: virtualbox kernel module failed to build

2018-04-05 Thread Ioannis Balis
Problem solved! I completely uninstalled virtualbox-dkms from Synaptic package
manager and the application center of Ubuntu. Then rebooted, and installed it
fresh from the application center of the Elementary OS and rebooted again.
Finally it worked! I think that the bug may be related to the fact that I am
using the Pantheon desktop and get updates from the Elementary OS app center.
Sorry for alarming you! I hope all works fine from now on!
Thank you!

[Bug 1705861] [NEW] Update OpenCV to 3.x

2017-07-22 Thread Ioannis
Public bug reported:

This is really a continuation to this:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/opencv/+bug/1540168

The conclusion in that bug report seems to be "Won't fix" for 16.04,
with a promise for inclusion in "zesty+1". I'm not sure if that means
17.04.2 or not. Just wanted to put a placeholder here as a reminder.

OpenCV 2.4.x is seriously outdated and lacking in functionality. Those
of us that needed 3.x, end up building it from source, since even ppa
options seems to be poorly maintained. That makes it hard to collaborate
with others on OpenCV projects.

thank you.

When using the gnome-screenshot to capture screen, an irrelevant area of the
screen is captured. It could be the login background or 'cached' screen area
from windows that have been opened and closed a long time ago, instead of the
real area captured with the cursor selector.

This will might not be a gnome-screenshot at all, and more probably an
intel hd graphics driver issue, since using any alternative packages for
screenshoting or screencasting will end in same result.

Another strange thing is that on cold boots, everything is working
properly for a while, but after some time, and after screen locks, the
capturing tools will again start to misbehave.

Here are some screencasts captured with kazam, exposing a similar issue:

Amazing! It works and now I think you really nailed it! Perhaps you can
also add a label in the preferences with a link to that post, so that it
becomes clear how to set it up.

Thank you very much!

[Bug 1506605] [NEW] Diodon shortcut not working

2015-10-15 Thread Ioannis Christodoulou
Public bug reported:

I've tried several key combinations and the diodon menu is not showing (using
Ctrl-Alt-V).
I've added ppa:diodon-team/stable and updated diodon through that, but I still
cannot make the diodon menu to open through shortcut. Further, the updated
diodon does not even show the hotkey tab in the preferences.
Was the hotkey functionality removed completely?

[Bug 1449005] Re: trim does not work with Samsung 840 EVO after firmware update (EXT0DB6Q)

2015-06-24 Thread Ioannis Vranos
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1338706 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1338706

@CJ, this bug is duplicate of bug #1338706.

The title of it, is:

Samsung SSD 840 failed to get NCQ Send/Recv Log Emask 0x1 failed to set
xfermode (err_mask=0x40) on upstream kernels = 3.12.

So I presume the bug affects kernels since version 3.12, and kernel 3.10
has not the bug.

[Bug 1338706] Re: Samsung SSD 840 failed to get NCQ Send/Recv Log Emask 0x1 failed to set xfermode (err_mask=0x40) on upstream kernels = 3.12

2015-06-21 Thread Ioannis Vranos
@Cyberbob, there is a fix coming for *buntus 14.04 (Trusty), as you can
see at the beginning of this page (Fix Committed).

When the message becomes Fix Released, the updated kernel will be
avaible to all *buntus 14.04.

I do not remember if Linux Mint uses the official Ubuntu repositories.

If it does, when the message becomes Fix Released, the updated kernel
will be available to Linux Mint.

Since Linux Mint doesn't show all updates available via its graphical
update program, you will have to install them, by running in terminal:

sudo apt-get update

and then

sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Also, for data loss to occur, you must have something like 60-70 GB of
data on the filesystem.

Data loss does not occur, if you have just clean installed some *buntu.

If you have not disabled NCQ in /etc/default/grub, if you run

fstrim -av

manually 3-4 times, one after the other, you will get data loss.

It has happened to me with *buntus 14.04.2, 14.10, 15.04.

If you disable NCQ in grub, everything is fine.

[Bug 1437492] Re: boot stalls on USB detection errors

2015-05-30 Thread Ioannis Vranos
The issue still exists in some form.

Usually if one or more USB error messages appear, and you wait, they
disappear now, and the boot proceeds ok.

Sometimes however, like if you press a keyboard button before they
disappear, the issue remains.

As I read on this thread:

the issue is common to many Samsung SSDs.

I hope Canonical will backport the kernel fix to *buntus 15.04, and

[Bug 1437492] Re: boot stalls on USB detection errors

2015-05-14 Thread Ioannis Vranos
My post with all my typos fixed:

I have the same bug, error -110 USB error messages, and when I reboot,
the computer's UEFI initialisation during boot, at the USB device stage,
is very slow.

The problem gets fixed temporarily, if you unplug the computer from the
power socket (or turn off the power switch, at the back of the
computer), and leave it off until the motherboard loses all its power.

It looks like it is some kernel 3.19 bug with USB ports. Some USB ports
remain powered on, if you shutdown the computer, for charging devices,
etc.

If you remove the power plug, all USB ports turn off, so the issue gets
fixed, until the issue reappears at some random time, when the kernel
gets loaded again.

The issue does not exist with *buntu 14.04/14.04.2, and 14.10.

[Bug 1437492] Re: boot stalls on USB detection errors

2015-05-14 Thread Ioannis Vranos
Or it may be some systemd bug.

It is definitely an *buntu 15.04 issue.

As I said, the workaround is to remove the computer's power cord from
the power socket, until the motherboard loses all its power.

[Bug 1350393] Re: Recent accountsservice update causes login window to hang

2015-04-03 Thread Ioannis Papadopoulos
Hello,

I am also affected by this bug, having ~6000 user accounts on my system.
I observe exactly the same things as reported in the original bug report.

I think that lightdm should not consult accountsservice at all,
when the number of existing users is large (e.g. more than 100, could be set in
the lightdm configuration files).
So, probably this is more a lightdm issue.

Cheers,
Yannis

[Bug 1291574] Re: nouveau DRM GPU lockup, PFIFO unhandled status 0x00800000

2014-12-05 Thread Ioannis Iliadis - Ilousis
Maybe is needed to try a temporal or a permanent disabling
(deactivation) of nouveau driver, by blacklisting the driver. Temporal
is done by using the kernel parameter nouveau.blacklist=yes. Permanent
is done by adding the line 'blacklist nouveau' in the end of file
/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf.

For more information please read these:

[Bug 1371965] [NEW] qt-sdk package installation results in a mess on Ubuntu 14.04, 14.04.1, and 14.10 Beta 1

2014-09-20 Thread Ioannis Vranos
Public bug reported:

OS: All Ubuntu flavours (Ubuntu, Xubuntu, Kubuntu, Lubuntu, Ubuntu
GNOME), of version 14.04/14.04.1, and 14.10 Beta 1.

When qt-sdk package is installed, the following happens:

1. Qt SDK 4.8 packages are installed.

2. qtcreator package is installed.

3. qtcreator package, installs Qt SDK 5.2 packages.

The result is a mess.

For example, the documentation is for Qt 4.8, but Qt Creator compiles
with Qt 5.2 facilities.

[Bug 1286845] Re: Duplicity crashes with UnicodeEncode error

2014-03-29 Thread Ioannis Iliadis - Ilousis
If System Language is set to English (System Settings → User Accounts →
Language → English), then back-up completes flawlessly. This is
confirmation to the observation of Alexander Kubashin (kubashin-a).

For el_GR.UTF-8 (as for ru_RU.UTF-8), the last line of errors is:
UnicodeEncodeError: 'ascii' codec can't encode characters in position 16-25:
ordinal not in range(128)

This bug, maybe it is the same as Bug #1276327 and similar to Bug
#989496 and Bug #554412 .
