[Bug 1859948] [NEW] behaviour matrix depends on how it is created

2020-01-16 Thread Jaap Woldringh
Public bug reported:

In Python3 (and in Python2) the behaviour of a matrix depends on how it is
created. If elements are assigned directly, it behaves as it should, but if a
row is created and then several of these rows are appended to the matrix, this
matrix misbehaves, even when it appears to be the same matrix as the first one.
I have added a .py program that shows the bug: codevierkant_experiment.py.
The same happens in Python2, and also in the newer Python3 in Ubuntu 19.10

[Bug 1568211] Re: no UMS support in radeon module

2016-04-22 Thread Jaap Woldringh
I have a computer with AMD A8-6600K APU processor with a module Radeon
HD Graphics (HD 8570D)

Booting a new Ubuntu 16.04 from a LiveDVD the monitor receives no
signal and apparently nothing happens, except the running of the DVD-
player.

However, booting with the option Nomodeset is successful, only a message
shows up that no UMS support is present in the Radeon module.

I am not sure this IS a bug, reading
http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item=MTI2ODA
(if I am not expected to provide links, please excuse me)

2016-04-22 Thread Jaap Woldringh
I have to withdraw my comment in my previous post, that installing from a DVD
doesn't help either.
I think that this is another bug, not related to the one we are talking about
here.
On another computer the computer boots nicely from this DVD.

[Bug 1325801] Re: failed to boot from USB disk with error: gfxboot.c32: not a COM32R Image boot:

2016-04-22 Thread Jaap Woldringh
I can confirm that I experience this same problem, after trying to boot
Ubuntu 16.04 from a usb-stick, which I created on an Ubuntu 14.04
system. Pressing TAB and selecting live from the menu doesn't help.

So I think that sudodus is right.

I guess I have to wait for an update for my 14.04 system, before I can
use it to create a working usb stick.

Installing from a DVD doesn't help either.

The newest usb-creator-gtk in the repositories is 0.2.56.3, which was
probably used when creating my usb stick.

[Bug 1314924] Re: Adressbox Entries unreadable: Grey/Black Mask overlaying text

2015-08-18 Thread Jaap Woldringh
I repeat this comment here, as I saw tool late that the other place
(1316250) was not the correct place (sorry for this):

I had this bug and fixed it as in comment #11.
This was fine, on a Pentium M Toshiba laptop, using Lubuntu 14.04.

However, after the latest update of Firefox (40.0) Firefox stops loading
before the URL-bar appears, and pages can be loaded. Just the main frame
appears, with the heading with the name of the start page.

I found the setting gfx.xrender.enabled to False is the culprit, so I
had to undo this setting.

So: now what should I do?

[Bug 1346269] Re: Ubuntu 14.04 won't shut down (reboots)

2014-09-14 Thread Jaap Woldringh
Adding to my report in #4, I discovered that the shutdown behaviour of my
computer changed by replacing the open source X.orgX graphics driver
(xserver-xorg-video-ati) by the nonfree driver called Video driver for the
AMD graphics accelerator of fglrx-updates. The other non free driver (without
the addition updates did not change things.
Now the system doesn't reboot after shutdown, but the shutdown halts halfway, I
guess after the hard disk stops rotating (noise stops), but the cooling
ventilators still run.

The graphics card is embedded in the AMD-processor, and is called
AMD/ATI: Richland [ Radeon HD 8570D]

This is an improvement, but it is still not how things should be, of
course, but might indicate where to seek.

[Bug 1346269] Re: Ubuntu 14.04 won't shut down (reboots)

2014-09-13 Thread Jaap Woldringh
I can support this bug report. For my (very new) computer details see
attachment (lshw.txt)
I currently use Linux x 3.13.0-35-generic #62-Ubuntu SMP Fri Aug 15
01:58:42 UTC 2014 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

In /etc/default/grub I have the line:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=quiet splash acpi=off

Symptoms: without the acpi=off parameter the computer used to reboot
repeatedly. With acpi=off it boots OK, but reboots spontaneously
after shutdown, and the computer must be powered off using the power
switch.

Trying the most recent upstream kernel ( 3.12.28, I guess compiled 9th
of september) the computer boots OK, even without acpi=off and but
during shutdown, after showing 2 red dots of the 5, first time. The
computer has to be switched off using the power button. So another
behaviour, but still it is not OK.

I also tried a LiveCD with Ubuntu 12.04.1 (Precise), this was quite OK (only no
sound, on this very new hardware)
Same with LiveDVD with Ubuntu 12.4.5 (Precise, the latest), this behaved same
as the 14.4.1 LiveDVD

So the bug entered somewher between Ubuntu 12.04.1 and 12.04.5

Hope this helps, adding 50% to the people affected ...

Greetings,

Jaap Woldringh

[Bug 930447] Re: Unable to Install Ubuntu 12.04 on Pentium M x86 Laptop due to PAE kernel

2012-05-02 Thread Jaap Woldringh
I am downloading the non-pae .iso, mentioned in # 69, by luizluca,
thanks to him for that :) Hope it works.

I want to react to this bug report, without having read all comments
(sorry for that) to cast another vote for non pae kernels. My Toshiba
A50 laptop has an Intel Pentium M 1.6GHz processor, and is still a very
fine laptop, which it would be very much a pity to have to ditch.

I guess there must be quite a number of 32 bit i686 systems around in
the world (also in less prosperous places) , that have less than 3 GiB
RAM, and which do not need pae at all, which would also slow them down
by up to 10%.

[Bug 413949] Re: PC freezes during install caused by Dell A920 printer

2009-09-06 Thread Jaap Woldringh
I have a problem with Kubuntu Karmic Alpha-5 which is similar to this
one, might be related to it, but probably is not exactly the same:

I cannot install this on my test computer because it doesn't find the
partition tables of the existing installation (on both of the two hard
disks).

Ubuntu 9.04 (jaunty) however runs fine on this computer, Gparted shows
both hard disks as it should, and after starting the Jaunty LiveCD the
partition tables on both disks are shown with fdisk -l /dev/sda and same
for sdb.

So ...

Hope this helps. As it is Karmic on my test computer can't be installed.
This is a very important bug as far as I can see :)

[Bug 421407] Re: [Jaunty and Karmic] the installer by default proposes a wrong size for the Ubuntu partition (far too small)

2009-08-31 Thread Jaap Woldringh
I do agree with Pjotr12345,

In this age of large hard disks it is not advisable to have a /root partition
size which is just a bare minimum. Even on my netbook with only 8 GB I use a
/root partition of 4 GB, and consider this a minimum. Want to install some
extra thingies such as wxmaxima and so. Everyone wants to install some extras.
And if just updating already does not succeed for sheer lack of space, then
it's bye bye Ubuntu for new users that are trying out Ubuntu.
Pjotrs12345's suggestion of a dynamic partition size is a valid one, especially
if that is already done in Debian, as he says. Please consider it ...

appears that ***an i386 image does not work with an i386 processor***!!

Glad to see that you are still working on this topic, I clean forgot

[Bug 152054] Gutsy Kubuntu 7.10 does not boot (same error as Feisty)

2007-10-12 Thread Jaap Woldringh
Public bug reported:

Just downloaded Gutsy Kubuntu 7.10 RC (Live CD), burned the .iso as an
image, checked the CD, and started to boot it, but it didn't: It stops
the booting process with a textscreen on which the lines:

BusyBox v.1.1.3 (Debian .) Buil-in shel (ash)
Enter help .
(initramfs)

and halts.

I did not have these issues with the previous (Tribe) versions, which
all installed beautifully on this computer.

I did have the same issue with the Live CD of Feisty, which I had to
install using the alternate CD.

So I think that the installer of the Live CD is still not working correctly,
which is a killer for new users of (K)Ubuntu.
Please use the installer of the tibe previous Tribe CD's instead, in the
definitive release.

To add some information which might have worth: it is my only computer
having two disks, and the only one on which Feisty Live CD did not boot.

** Affects: ubuntu
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

Re: [Bug 78380] Feisty Upgrade crashes

2007-10-03 Thread Jaap Woldringh
Op woensdag 03 oktober 2007, schreef digger:
I have a similar problem. I have had Edgy running for almost 1 year now,
 with only minor hiccups.

However, I opted last week to download the Feisty upgrade and now cannot
boot up - I can only run off the Edgy 6.10 Live CD to access the web
 etc.

I also get the tty problem

Is there any way I can roll back to Edgy without losing the data on my
hard drive? Can I re-install Edgy? I'd be happy to just have a system
that is working and let someone smarter figure out the bug in the mean
 time.

This is a well known problem with the Feisty Live CD, and there appears to be
no real cure which works for everybody.
What you can try is to install the alternate CD for Feisty.
Better still: why not wait a couple of weeks and try the newest (K)Ubuntu,
(Gutsy) which will be released October 18th.
Success

[Bug 72226] Re: All translations from the source not included

2007-08-30 Thread Jaap Woldringh
I am satisfied that I seem to have thrown a stone in the pond and that this bug
is not the result of people unwilling to respect a translation (and the
translator!). Данило Шеган even says it is a critical bug, and it is. It can
drive people away from Ubuntu. Niklas says it is a problem in Ubuntu, NOT in
Debian, so the problem must be somewhere in the process of building the Ubuntu
packages. From personal experience (I translated some more) this problem does
occur in other packages also, such as kst (very very obsolete translators
credited), and gcalctool, which was translated again by me and committed for me
some time ago by Wouter Bolsterlee (I am not a member of the Dutch translation
team for Ubuntu). With no apparent result in the tribals of Gutsy so far.
I was even considering switching to OpenSUSE or Fedora, but love Kubuntu too
much for now to do this. And I see that my complaint is taken very seriously,
for which I thank you very much.

[Bug 129730] Re: Th e file a bug report in gcalctool, in the latest trial version of Gutsy, doesn't work

2007-08-25 Thread Jaap Woldringh
I guess the bug report tool in Gutsy now works, after installing Gutsy tribal 5
and reinstalling gcalctool.
That is: information concerning the problem is collected, after which
Launchpad is opened.
It was not slow either as someone else reported it was.

So why it did not work in Gutsy tribal 4 (and 3, on this same computer) I don't
know but in tribal 5 it seems OK.
I guess the problem can now be regarded as closed

[Bug 78380] Re: Fiesty Live CD crashes during Boot

2007-08-14 Thread Jaap Woldringh
Hello Tommytabib,

Please see my postings above to see whether I had this same problem or not :)
I really think that the problem is not the same for everyone affected, and that
a cure that fixes this for one person does not fix this for another. In your
case it seems that the CDROM drive is the problem, in my case it isn't. I hope
the real cause(s) of this nasty bug will be found and repaired.

[Bug 78380] Re: Fiesty Live CD crashes during Boot

2007-08-13 Thread Jaap Woldringh
I have tried Gutsy tribe 3 and 4 (if I have the numbers right, the two
latest tribes of Gutsy at this time or writing), and they both install
quite well on this computer: no problem at all. So for me the problem is
fixed, assuming nothing will be changed. I congratulate you with your
solution, but a solution that means unplugging the CDROM drive is no
real solution, I am afraid :)

[Bug 72226] Re: All translations from the source not included

2007-08-13 Thread Jaap Woldringh
In the latest tribe (4) of Gutsy this problem still exists. As the Dutch
translator I must say that it is no pleasure to find that one's translations in
(K)Ubuntu are not taken seriously.
It's not only in Qalculate! that this happens, this happens in other programs
that I translated too, such as Gcalctool and kst, for which I also filed bug
reports a while ago.

I hope that something will be done about this, a problem that seems only
to exist in the Ubuntu family of distributions.

The original poster of this bug posted this about 9 months ago ...

Maybe the final Gutsy will be OK. I hope so, as translating this way is
no joy.

[Bug 129730] Re: Th e file a bug report in gcalctool, in the latest trial version of Gutsy, doesn't work

2007-08-08 Thread Jaap Woldringh
Thanks for your comment.
The computer I am testing Gutsy on has enough RAM (512 MiB), but the processor
is indeed a bit slow (500 MHz). Still, I am waiting now for over ten minutes
for it to respond to my selecting it to do a bug report, and still it doesn't
do anything. In other applications the response is (almost) immediate.
So at least practically on my computer the bug report in Gcalctool doesn't work.
The computer is updated with the very latest updates. This I do on a daily
basis.

System is fully updated, which I also mentioned in the report. I'll try again

Note this is only in gcalctool, in Gutsy, as far as I know. In kst the
reportong of a bug works OK.
The bug reporting in gcalctool in Feisty is also OK (on another computer, I
have to add)

[Bug 78380] Re: Fiesty Live CD crashes during Boot

Herewith the attachment of lspci -vv on the computer affected.
I tried to attach the other file too, but that seems not possible so the other
one comes in the next message.

I must say the affected computer was changed: it got other hardd disks
and other memory, but in the new condition it acted the same and Ubuntu
was installed using the Alternate CDrom

[Bug 96097] Re: Feisty Beta knetworkmanager hangs on activation stage when connecting to WAP

These are different, so if you use WPA with a WEP key, no success is
what is to be expected.

[Bug 78380] Re: Fiesty Live CD crashes during Boot

2007-04-24 Thread Jaap Woldringh
In addition to my previous post:

Install using the alternate CD succeeded. Changed the second hard disk
(hdb) though after that as Feisty could not find the /home directory
which was on that disk.

On the new hdb same problem until I installed (with the alternate CD)
this HD, keeping the other partitions on hda, and breaking off the
install, which gave a number of complaints, but now everything runs OK
(so far). Now /home is found, which makes me think the previous hdb was
dying.

Booting the Live CD again, after this, gives the same problems,
however so it is not the possibly dying previous hdb-disk which was
the cause, though the bug may be related to the *existence* of a second
hard disk (???).

Off topic: due to the misspelling of Feisty (Fiesty) in the heading this
bug report was difficult to find.

Typing this in Feisty, on this computer:

[Bug 78380] Re: Fiesty Live CD crashes during Boot

2007-04-22 Thread Jaap Woldringh
With one of my computers I have the same problem.
It installs Dapper and Edgy (and any other distro I tried) without a problem.
Feisty Live CD does not boot however, which I now think is related to
initramfs, which I think (not know) replaces
initrd. Sorry if I am mistaken in this.
Without quiet and splash I get on booting (hand copied):

[65.733286] hdc: ATAPI 48X CD-Rom driver, 128 kB Cache, DMA
[65.733671] Uniform CD-ROM driver Revision: 3.20
cp: unable to open 'root/var/log/': No such file or directory
Done
Begin: Running /scripts/unit-bottom...
mount: Mounting /root/dev/ in /dev/.static/dev failed: no such file or directory
Done
mount: : No such file or directory
...
...
target system doesn't have /sbin/init

Replacing the CD-ROM drive with another one did not change this, except now a
ATAPI 24X CD-Rom was found.

Replacing the NIC did not help either (it was due anyway, as it already did not
work well in Edgy).

I have downloaded the alternate CD and this seems to work, I could check it for
errors,
and it is now checking the memory of my system, already one pass without
finding an error.

A short description of my system:

MB chipset: Aladdin 5
Processor: AMD K6-2 501.2 MHz
Memory: 320 MiB, 217 MiB/s

I sincerely hope this will help you correct this bug, which, as I already said,
seems to
be related to initramfs

[Bug 78380] Re: Fiesty Live CD crashes during Boot

2007-04-22 Thread Jaap Woldringh
addition to previous post:

After three passes memory seems OK

I tried to boot the Live CD of Feisty Fawn another time, with the boot
option break=top, quiet and splash removed, without success. Hand copied
the last lines were:

[...] Time: tsc clocksource has been installed
[...] Freeing unused kernel memory: 328k freed
Loading, please wait ...
[...] input: AT Translated Set 2 keyboard as /class/input/input1
Spawning shell within the initramfs
BusyBox v1.1.3 etc
(initramfs) modprobe = piix
(initramfs) exit
.
.
.

after this I get to exactly the same error as described in the previous
post, after the line Uniform CD-ROM driver Revision: 3.20

So far the Live CD of Feisty is quite useless on this computer

The boot option break=top and the initramfs action modprobe = piix I
retrieved from some other related bug report I found here :).

I am going to install with the alternate CD now, which, I think, uses
initrd, anyway it uses the non graphical installer, which is quite OK
with me.
