[Bug 1961541] [NEW] ubuntu daily isos fail to isoboot

2022-02-20 Thread John Little
Public bug reported:

From about 2022-02-06, doing a grub isoboot into a jammy-desktop-amd64
iso loops outputting

stdin: Not a typewriter

This is repeated about every 2 seconds, for about 2 minutes, then there
is a prompt

Unable to find a medium containing a live file system

and a busybox prompt. The casper log shows

Begin: Running /scripts/casper-premount ... done.
done.
stdin: Not a typewriter

I've tried Ubuntu, Kubuntu and Lubuntu daily isos. These all could
isoboot up to 2022-02-02 at least.

I wrote one of the daily isos to a USB stick, and it booted normally.
Using a Ventoy boot USB stick, which uses a different grub iso booting
method, fails.

Using a grub isoboot is much faster than writing an iso to a USB stick
then booting from that stick, and makes daily testing feasible.

(Any data "gathered" by ubuntu-bug is from the Kubuntu 21.10 system I'm
using to file this report, and are not relevant.)

[Bug 1851311] Re: loopback command hangs in 2.04 under UEFI

2020-08-01 Thread John Little
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1878541 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1878541

@chrisccoulson: they have the same underlying cause, but bug #1878541 is
a bug against snapd, which has nothing to do with the problem.

[Bug 1860771] [NEW] crash while decompressing with multiple threads

2020-01-24 Thread John Little
Public bug reported:

lrzip fails with segmentation fault near the end of decompressing.
Ubuntu 19.10, APT reports the version of lrzip is 0.631+git180528-1. A
workaround is to use -p1, one thread only, but that is very slow.

It appears to me to match this issue on
https://github.com/ckolivas/lrzip/issues/122. I built from that github
project and the crash does not occur. So, I hope raising a bug here to
suggest getting a later version from upstream is appropriate.

[Bug 1785171] Re: Intel I219-V Ethernet Interface on Ubuntu Linux Using e1000e Driver keeps Dropping Internet Connection

2019-03-14 Thread John Little
I may have stumbled on a workaround for the disconnection issue, though
I can't be sure.

To narrow down the time when the connection stops working, I left a ping
to my router running, every 4 seconds.

ping -i 4 192.168.1.1 > ping.log

Several days later, I rebooted, forgot about the ping, and had the
connection fail a couple of times that day. Whenever the ping has been
running, the problem has not occurred; but of course, the incidence of
problems is sufficiently low that it might be a coincidence.

[Bug 1785171] Re: Intel I219-V Ethernet Interface on Ubuntu Linux Using e1000e Driver keeps Dropping Internet Connection

2018-11-15 Thread John Little
I'm getting this on a desktop with Kubuntu 18.10, though it started on 18.04.
A disconnect using the network applet, wait a few seconds, connect brings it
back till the next disconnect. I put up with it for months assuming it was due
to something in the path to my router, but have isolated it back to the
desktop. I"m usually watching YouTube with firefox, but it has happened with
ktorrent and zsync.
There's no Windows dual boot.
ethto0l -k shows tcp-segmentation-offload off.

Google found the workaround in #4 from 2015, and it has worked for me,
running SQL Workbench/J.

[Bug 1766648] Re: baloo_file crashes after some time in Ubuntu Bionic

2018-08-20 Thread John Little
My crash has been avoided for now by deleting the index:

rm ~/.local/share/baloo/*

Reinstating those files from a snapshot three days ago, and resetting
"first run=true", reinstates the crash. The index is 9 MiB, I could
make it available if that would be useful.

So, a workaround for the crash may be to delete the index files, set
first run=true in .config/baloofilerc, and restart baloo with balooctl
start.

[Bug 1308348] Re: network settings indicator missing from panel

2014-04-22 Thread John Little
I did a clean install of Lubuntu 14.04 i386, and it affects me as well.

Starting nm-applet works. Using sudo is not good, ~/.dbus and ~/.cache
can become owned by root.

However, this may be have something to do with wireless problems during
the install. In my first install attempt I selected connect to
wireless later and this gave a Lubuntu with no wireless capability
which resisted all my attempts to set it up. It did not admit to the
existence of wireless connections. I could ifconfig wlan0 up but the
DE had nothing. Several attempts selecting the wireless AP and typing
the password failed, the next preparing to install screen would have
an x by the connected to internet line. The attempt that succeeded
paused for 10 minutes after clicking connect, and I was prompted for the
wireless password several times during the install. A Lubuntu 13.10
install on the same hardware (a USB Realtek 8188) had rock solid
wireless, completely painless.

[Bug 1241917] Re: Gvim Glib-GObject Warning when starting gvim in ubuntu 13.10

2013-11-25 Thread John Little
This only affects my recent builds of vim, 7.4.103 and 7.4.92 before
that. It doesn't affect the gvim from the Saucy repository, built by
pkg-vim-maintain...@lists.alioth.debian.org, which is 7.4.000-1ubuntu2.
(I leave it in /usr/bin/gvim.) I've just built that version from apt-
get source, and it displays the problem, too.

[Bug 466321] Re: After Ubuntu installation, nothing in universe is installable until package list is updated

2010-03-27 Thread John Little
I am booting ubuntu from an external HD. Not having the software listed
in the software center available for instalation is time consuming and
frustrating for newcomers as me that are testing for business use. If we
expect more users to switch to opensource, it needs to be layer 8
ready.

[Bug 121177] Re: Cannot play audio CD in amarok (related to audiocd:/)

2008-04-29 Thread John Little
Al Berto said:

In Configure Amarok menu, Engine, I have the Xine engine, and down
in the Cd Audio Configuration I put the right path...

I made this change (mine is /dev/scd0 on Kubuntu Hardy) and it makes
Amarok's Engage | Play Audio CD work, but the change doesn't stick
long; ejecting, loading a CD, choose Play Audio Cd with amaroK on the
Audio CD - KDE Daemon pop up, and the problem recurs, because Amarok's
setting has been reset to /dev/cdrom.

I have edited the media.audio_cd.device entries in ~/xine and
~/.kde/share/apps/amarok/xine-config, with no effect.

When this happens, ps -ef shows a process whose command is amarokapp
--cdplay /dev/cdrom, which when run manually indeed has the effect of
changing the setting. Clearly, the problem lies with the KDE Daemon pop
up, does anyone know where it gets its options from?
