[Bug 165161] Re: Compiz places transient dialogs behind currently focused window

2009-11-14 Thread Joseph William Baker
I'm running 64 bit Jaunty Ubuntu with Mozilla Thunderbird and Ubuntu's
packages of

enigmail 2:0.95.7-1ubuntu2
 thunderbird 2.0.0.23+build1+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.9.04.1
 thunderbird-gnome-support 2.0.0.23+build1+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.9.04.1

With Compiz Extra settings enabled I still see this behavior exhibited
when enigmail pops up to ask for my GPG passphrase (which I have set to
do every time I send an email by choice)

Bug 164489 had been marked as a duplicate of this one, but describes the
problem specifically with enigmail and thunderbird together. The temporary
workaround is to set the appearance/Compiz settings
System - Preferences - Appearance - Visual Effect = Normal or None

But I wish to enjoy the full desktop effects.

-Joe

OK this bug was marked a duplicate of 165161 and that one says the

condition of Thunderbird and Enigmail are still not working when the

[Bug 431982] [NEW] Adobe isn't maintaining 64 bit Alpho Code

2009-09-17 Thread Joseph William Baker
*** This bug is a security vulnerability ***

Public security bug reported:

Binary package hint: adobe-flashplugin

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Adobe still has not released a final 64 bit version of Flash. There
have been security updates to their 32 bit flash player which have not
had corresponding upgrades for the 64 bit version.

It is my considered observation that this is a security threat that
users are not being informed of when they install the beta version of
flash.

If there is a way to run the 32 bit version I think that would be
preferred or one of the open source flash players instead.

How this issue is determined in Karmic will determine whether I will
move back to the 32 bit architecture or continue with the 64 bit.

I am always hopeful that the open source versions will mature to a
usability point where I can leave the adobe plugins for good.

Sincerely,
Joe Baker

Since it is alpha code, is Adobe committing to release security updates?

And why then is my 9.04 installation still running old flash plugin code
when newer code is available?

I stand corrected on the point of Adobe not releasing a newer version.
Thank you.

Has this update been pushed through to users of ubuntu-restricted-extras
for ubuntu 64 bit 9.04? My system is still running a 10.22. version.

Thanks for your attention to my concerns. I trust they are warranted
still.

[Bug 276822] Re: busybox with (initramfs) / boot: / kernel not found

2009-04-19 Thread Joseph William Baker
I'm having this problem with Jaunty RC - I get a prompt that says initramfs.
I thought it might be related to my hard drive partitions using encrypted LUKS
over LVM, so I removed the hard drive but still had the same problem.

Once I hit enter a couple times at the initramfs prompt and got past the
problem to a boot screen but that was with Ubuntu 9.04 beta.

This is really important to me. I want to distribute memory sticks
equiped with pre-setup voip clients, vpns and encrypted email for
friends.

I also need to get the exact list of packages to pin/hold which will not
be upgradable on a memory stick environment - ie Kernel, libc6?

Thanks!

I've attached a casper log.
I forgot to capture the output of dmesg, but I did run dmesg and visually
inspected it. It seemed to report corruption in an ext3 filesystem. This

encrypt the entire root partition as an option of the alternate install of

I've downloaded the daily snapshot dated 4/18/2008.
I processed it using the usb-creator application installed on an Ubuntu Jaunty

for me. This is a Verbatim memory stick 4 GB. I am erasing it with Partition
Editor/gparted by formatting the partition. USB Creator always says the stick
needs reformatting. Next I will try installing from CD this latest day's
Image, and will then try writing the memory stick from there.

[Bug 363422] [NEW] Sound quality needs improvement

2009-04-18 Thread Joseph William Baker
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: twinkle

There is a crackling in the audio that is slight. I think it is a
difference between how KDE apps and the Gnome apps handle sound.

I'm pleased to report that Ekiga sounds great!

I need the srtp feature that twinkle proports to support for security
reasons which Ekiga does not yet support.

The up and coming qutecom supports srtp too.

The sound worked best when set to OSS but still not perfect.

The sound was very choppy when set to ALSA.

Thanks for listening and for packaging this great application!

[Bug 293682] [NEW] Ubuntu on a USB Stick - Twinkle No sound

2008-11-04 Thread Joseph William Baker
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: twinkle

I'm getting no sound for twinkle nor for the Gnome Sound Preferences panel.
This is a Ubuntu Live CD Session from a USB memory stick.

I have applied some updates of a kernel nature which failed to complete.

I noticed that the memory stick cannot accept kernel updates.

It might be good for the USB Memory stick users to pin their kernels in
apt so that packages which cannot be upgraded won't try.

I am excited about the possibility of sending people memory sticks with
pre-configured twinkle accounts setup to use srtp encryption. Keep up
the good work! Thanks for all you've done thus far!

This appears FIXED in Gutsy Gibbons!
It seems the

was added. I tested from a user account without an x session nor a $DISPLAY
environment variable.
vncserver :1
Then it requested the password.
Then ...
vncserver -kill :1

In
/home/username/.vnc/xstartup
I commented out the xterm line
#xterm .
 replaced twm with
gnome-session

Then started it again.
vncserver :1

Now tried vncviewer and got into the Gnome Desktop without problems.

It would be nice if VNC4 was compiled against a newer version of Xorg like
someone mentioned earlier in Debian had done.
This is good news.

[Bug 139682] Re: vnc4 version bump request 4.1.2

2007-10-03 Thread Joseph William Baker
This is pretty important. I understand that Ubuntu has promoted RealVNC
over tightVNC as the default vnc handler in Ubuntu. It would be very
embarrasing to have a year old security bug in the distribution release.
I think the vulnerability is in the vnc4-server component.

At first there were doubts about whether the 4.1.1 was vulnerable on
Linux, but I've seen some reports suggesting that indeed the Linux port
is vulnerable.

I had exactly the same problem after upgrading to Gutsy.

 This is what is happening:
It seems evms is trying to mount a harddisk that is already being mounted by
the kernel..and thus fails with an error device lookup failed or similar.

 How to solve it:
Edit /etc/evms.conf and add in the exclude fields the names of your harddisks.
Ie in my case I got sda1 and sda2. So I placed sd* to exclude them all.
I rebooted and laptop was working normal again.

Pieje,

Maybe there could be an option in evms to identify active mounts and
either ignore them or execute the remount option to re-attach the
filesystem to the /dev/evms counterpart.
Someday I hope to learn how to use the EVMS bad block relocation
feature. I was once burned pretty bad by an IDE hard drive in a mail
server where the server would lock up hard when trying to read from a
bad block.

Oh, and it might be preferable to identify the filesystems by uuid
instead of by /dev/sda1. I've heard that the discovery order of
/dev/sd* devices is not something that you can count on to be in the
same order every time. You can see these identifiers at /dev/disk/by-uuid/
