 Hey guys,

There is no such thing as Number Lock in the Apple Keyboard. If your
keypad is not working, it could be because Mouse Keys are turned on in
System Preferences - Universal Access - Mouse Trackpad. From there
you can turn this function off or (if the box is checked) you can press
the Option key 5x to turn Mouse Keys on or off.

Mouse Keys give the keypad the funtionality of a mouse. If you were to
hold the 8 key down, your mouse would go up; 4 would go left and so
 on.

If the keyboard is not operating in a certain software program, it
sounds like a software issue. Some would say that this is an issue with
the Apple Keyboard, but remember that software is designed for the
operating system. And the Apple Keyboard is meant to work with Apple
 OS.

As for using kernal patches, I strongly recommend caution. Since Apple
keeps the kernal very secretive, it's not wise to go messing around in
 there.

 Well, I hope this helps.

Re: [Bug 201887] Re: Slim USB Apple Keyboard not working correctly when pressing the numlock key

2008-09-27 Thread Justin Sunseri
I don't agree with Andrew's assessment of the function keys. This isn't a
normal PC keyboard and we shouldn't try to make it one. For the same reason
the number lock should always is the same reason that the media keys should
be used over the function keys. Yes its annoying sometimes but I end up
using my media keys far more often than fn keys and when looking at they
keyboard it is clearly obvious that the media keys are what a user expects
should happen if he presses one because the media key icon is so much
larger. Same situation with the directional pad. We should try to be
consistent with what is actually on the keyboard not with what is in our
minds that the keyboard should be. Yes its different but thats what buying
apple hardware is all about. Think Different

Re: [Bug 201887] Re: Slim USB Apple Keyboard not working correctly when pressing the numlock key

2008-07-23 Thread Justin Sunseri
Fedor, I have no doubt that you want the directional pad. You know its
there and that's great for you. But for someone who just bought this
keyboard and does not know it is there turning the directional pad on by
default can only cause confusion. If someone buys this keyboard and his
numbers don't work he is not going to know to hunt around for a num lock
key. There is no visible num lock key and no arrows on the keyboard that
would indicate that this is expected behavior. It will only seem broken.
Honestly I wish I could put a sticker on everyone's clear key so that they
know it is a num lock key and the directional pad can be on by default but
we can't do that it's out of our control. What we can control is making the
keyboard behave as expected for the majority of people looking at the
keyboard. I don't honestly think that people are going to look at that
clear key and say that it must be a num lock key because it is in the
location normally occupied by the num lock.

[Bug 251219] [NEW] apple slim keyboard defaults to using a directional pad when it should default to a number pad

 Bug description:
I have the new Slim USB Apple Keyboard and in Hardy Heron (Beta) when I
first boot up the alphabet keys work perfectly, but once I type in the
numpad or a number, nothing happens. After nothing happens I'm not able to
use my alpha keys, either.. When I type alphabet keys after trying a number
the alphabet keys produce numbers like '4' and '3'.. And many of the keys
 don't do anything..

I have tried setting the keyboard up as default, and as an Apple keyboard
by going to System Prefs Keyboard -- but nothing works.

If i then unplug the keyboard to reboot the keys usually work fine until
I hit a number key or the keypad again.

[Bug 250424] [NEW] mouse driver in xorg completely misreads the microsoft comfort mouse 3000

2008-07-21 Thread Justin Sunseri
Public bug reported:

Using the mouse driver in my xorg.config there are several issues with
the microsoft comfort mouse 3000. I'm sure this will apply to other
micrsoft mouse with tilt wheels. Here is the input device section for
my mouse

Section InputDevice
Identifier Configured Mouse
Driver mouse
Option CorePointer
Option Name Microsoft Microsoft Optical Mouse with Tilt Wheel
Option Device /dev/input/mice
Option Protocol ExplorerPS/2
Option Buttons 8
Option ZAxisMapping 4 5
EndSection

This mouse has what i count to be 8 buttons. right click, left click,
middle click (scroll wheel), scroll wheel up, scroll wheel down, tilt
wheel right, tilt wheel left, and thumb button. This makes 8 buttons.
Looking at the output from xev it says the thumb button is button 9.
This is one button too many. Also in xev the tilt wheel left and right,
what i think are buttons 6 and 7, cause no events. This is confirmed by
these two comments in a different bug report. while this was mentioned
in the bug it was not what the bug was about.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/52288/comments/8
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/52288/comments/9
Also looking at xev i have noticed that pressing in the middle click
does not always fire an event. I know I really need to stop buying
microsoft mice but they are always so attractively priced at the store.

I am using ubuntu 8.04 plus all updates in proposed

Thanks Fedor, that just masks the issue though, pushes off and reverses the
problem. Doing that when i take my laptop somewhere without the keyboard

this device gets plugged in?

On a completely different issue what is that symbol on the f4 key supposed

[Bug 201887] Re: Slim USB Apple Keyboard not working correctly when pressing the numlock key

2008-07-19 Thread Justin Sunseri
After upgrading to the newest kernel here is what I found. Pressing a
key on the number pad does not cause the letter keys to malfunction
anymore. The issue now is that the number pad is behaving like a
directional pad. Pressing the clear button at the top of the number pad
turns on the number lock and once the number lock is on then it behaves
like a normal number pad. I'm not sure if this is the intended behavior
but it seems very undocumented looking at the keyboard. You really
don't expect the clear button to toggle the num lock. Not sure if it is
a gnome issue or kernel issue but the brightness keys F1 and F2 do not
adjust the brightness of my laptop screen. If you need any other
information please let me know.

Re: [Bug 201887] Re: Slim USB Apple Keyboard not working correctly when pressing the numlock key

2008-07-19 Thread Justin Sunseri
I'm afraid that I must disagree with your assessment. There is no way on
earth that I can justify the number pad working as a directional pad by
default when there are no arrows marked on the keys and no visible number
lock key. Why should someone have to go find a real keyboard to find where
the number lock key is if all that person has is mac hardware? Who is to
say that that person will even realize that finding the number lock key
would be the answer to his problem. All someone who plugs in this keyboard
will know is that his numbers don't work and there is no visible indicator
on the keyboard what is going on. luckily i am using a laptop that has a
number lock light and i can see the status of the lock. If a person is
using a desktop there will be no such indicator as there is no number lock
light on the keyboard itself.

Is there anyway we can get this keyboard to default to number lock on
behavior by default?? Even if this is outside of the kernel itself when
someone plugs in this keyboard the system should know that the most
desirable mode of operation for this keyboard is to enable to number lock.

2007-12-27 Thread Justin Sunseri
I'm curious as to how you can test a bug the needs the computer to hibernate
to replicate it from a LiveCD. I wasn't aware that the CD could write to
the swap partition.

Thanks for the update Evgeny. For anyone else who may be interested you
can download and try the new Hardy Heron Alpha2 release from

to then test the new kernel via the LiveCD. General information
regarding the release can also be found here:

This bug really needs to be moved to gnome-power-manager. After disabling

Re: [Bug 149665] Re: when returning from suspend my laptop tries to hibernate

2007-10-06 Thread Justin Sunseri
When going through the suspend resume debugging steps listed in step 4 i get
this output when trying to suspend the computer. Please keep in mind that
putting the computer into suspend works fine when using either my suspend
hot key or through the quit dialog box. IMHO it appears as though both
suspend and hibernate are being called virtually at the same time but the
suspend takes place first and as soon as the laptop returns from suspend it
continues where it left off and goes into hibernation.

Here is the output of when i try to run

sync; echo 1 /sys/power/pm_trace; /etc/acpi/sleep.sh force

as mentioned in the suspend/resume debugging documents.

Re: [Bug 111257] Re: totem crashes with 'BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)' when using compiz and xserver-xorg-video-intel driver

2007-09-13 Thread Justin Sunseri
Using i810 is a much better option than not starting compiz because people
will eventually turn on desktop effects and then they will have problems. I
have been using i810 for a month now and other than having to install the
915resolution package i just don't see enough of a drawback to justify
losing either compiz or video playback. unless you want to make it so that
people can't install compiz if the intel driver is being used?

Re: [Bug 111257] Re: totem crashes with 'BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)' when using compiz and xserver-xorg-video-intel driver

2007-09-05 Thread Justin Sunseri
Since i have moved to the i810 driver i have found X to be much less buggy.
I used to have problems with returning from suspend where the machine would
just have a black screen. The backlight would be on but the screen was
being painted black. I have not had the problem since i started using the
i810 driver. Why not revert back to i810 by default until these problems
have been solved? So far the only advanatge I have noticed to using intel
was that i didn't need the 915resolution fix.

On 9/5/07, unggnu [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 81965 ***

I have not had the problem recently. It has been prompting me for a
password. Those sometimes the box is not visible except for the bar at the
bottom and i have to right click on the window in the window list and select
on top then the password dialog appears. IMHO we need to totally
rethink locking the wirlessnetworks like this. It is such an annoyance each
time we login for the first time or unlock the screen after a suspend to be
prompted again for a wireless key. Fedora has had this for a while when you
input your password you could do other tasks without needing to re-input
your password for another 30 seconds or so.

[Bug 83338] Re: When returning from hibernate/suspend network manager fails to connect to a wireless network

2007-04-14 Thread Justin Sunseri
The problem currently seems to be that instead of connecting to the
network when returning from suspend it needs to get the WPA key again.
When i started up the computer and initially connected to the network i
gave NM access to the key ring. it seems as though it no longer has
access to the key ring and it asks me for the WPA key. Once i do give
it the WPA key NM will connect without issue.

[Bug 90728] Re: Network-Manager-Applet 0.6.4 shows no network connection but I have one

2007-04-11 Thread Justin Sunseri
I'm not sure if this issue is related or not but I am having a similiar
issue where i am connected to a wireless network but NM insists when i
hover my mouse over the icon that i am connected to a wired network and
it displayed the wired network icon. When i click on the icon it shows
all the wireless networks and has a radio button checked next to the
wireless network that i am connected to. No netowrk cable is attached
to the computer.

This is very untypical for me i just noticed it after returning from a
hibernate.

[Bug 99648] Re: MMC/SD memory card reader does not work

2007-04-10 Thread Justin Sunseri
This bug is still present in 2.6.20-14-generic and is a regression.
This card reader has worked for over a year and worked out of the box in
edgy. What ever information is needed to resolve this problem please
let me know as soon as possible this is a very important piece of
hardware for me.

[ 497.928000] mmcblk0: mmc0:b368 SD249856KiB
[ 497.928000] mmcblk0: p1

This is the output from dmesg when i insert the card. It appears as
though it detects that the card has been inserted but g-v-m does not
mount the drive, even though it is set to do so, and it does not appear
in nautilus as a file system and no directory is created for it in
/media/
