[Bug 774827] Re: There seems to be no way to scroll vnc windows which are larger than the viewer screen size
I've discovered that returning to windowed mode from the fullscreen scaled mode made a 2880x1800 window and that by holding down alt and clicking, I could drag it around to have different parts of this large window covering the entire screen. However, when I tried to make it smaller by grabbing the bottom right corner and dragging something went haywire with X and/or gnome. Presumably, if I could resize the screen to something that fits within my display, I'd get the scroll bars that I need. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/774827 Title: There seems to be no way to scroll vnc windows which are larger than the viewer screen size -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 774873] Re: natty livecd kernel panic while moving window
Unfortunately, since this was the livecd, after the kernel panic appeared on the screen the machine was totally unresponsive. I've been trying to get the livecd to boot again on this machine, so far without success. I suspect that this kernel panic is due to a race and I'm mostly hitting it earlier, before whatever becomes initialized that switched to the text console to allow me to see the crash. I'll keep trying. Before this attempt, I'd booted two copies of the livecd on two different cd drives on this machine; each of the earlier times I removed the quiet and splash lines from the kernel boot line; in both of those instances, moving the terminal window also froze the machine, but I didn't get switched to a text console and I didn't see the flashing keyboard lights which would have told me that I had a kernel panic. The time I reported it, I had walked away briefly and the CD booted via the splash screen; when I got the kernel panic by doing exactly the same thing that had previously just frozen the box, I had assumed that starting it this way (which I almost never do) caused something to be enabled which allowed it to switch to the console on the panic. However, I haven't got any proof of that. As I said, I'll keep trying to reproduce it. The same CD boots on another copy of this machine but which has a USB mouse instead of a PS2 mouse; previous livecd's of Ubuntu also boot on this machine with the PS/2 mouse. I'm typing at a firefox from a 10.10 livecd to enter this comment. Unfortunately, I can't install Ubuntu on any of the machines here, I'm limited to what I can do with the livecd. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/774873 Title: natty livecd kernel panic while moving window -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 734303] Re: natty TORAM=yes doesn't work well
I've booted several more times on this laptop; the problem appears more to be related to starting up with a changed kernel command line rather than specifically the original change (removing quiet and splash and adding TORAM=yes). I hit space at the original purplish screen with the keyboard icon bottom center, then enter to accept English as the language, then F6 to pop up a dialog which, as a side effect, brings up the kernel boot line, ESC to exit the dialog (since I don't need any of its menu entries). At this point, I erase the quiet and splash options (so I can see initialization errors). Even if I don't add TORAM=yes, booting this way results in the compiz failure every time. Mostly it claims not to have enough free memory to automatically analyze the problem and send a report to the developers. Occasionally it does, but, as I've mentioned above, I can't actually SEND the report because the keyboard doesn't work. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/734303 Title: natty TORAM=yes doesn't work well -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 665042] Re: meerkat livecd can't shutdown or restart as another user
Here's the recipe: Boot livecd (I used amd64, but I don't think it matters). I set the timezone via the datetime menu, but I also don't think that matters. I used the Users and Groups menu to add a new user, giving him all privileges. I picked logout from the power menu. I got a login screen with my new user. I logged in as that new user. I selected shutdown from the power menu. The x display looked like it was shutting down, then it popped back up and I got the login screen again. I logged in as the new user again and captured all the /var/log files and dmesg output (but I didn't see anything interesting). [Bug 648746] [NEW] responding to kernel oops crash icon in Meerkat beta livecd leads to package linux-2.6.35-generic is not a genuine ubuntu package
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: apport The crash icon appeared on the top panel, I clicked on it, it said there was a kernel problem. I answered the questions (which you really can't answer at this point, I filed a different bug about that), only to end up with the dialogue box saying package linux-2.6.35-14-generic is not a genuine ubuntu package! Since the system itself supplied the package, couldn't it get it right? If it was going to fail to send the report, couldn't it either not offer to do so at the beginning before the user spends all the time pondering unanswerable questions? There is a bug (443961) which calls allowing reports for non-genuine packages a wishlist item; if allowing them to be sent is the only way to actually file a kernel oops report, this seems like more than a wishlist item. Of course, if you fix this bug by sending the right package name instead of a bad one, that other bug could still be considered a wishlist item. [Bug 647375] [NEW] Multiple problems using vnc4server under Meerkat beta livecd
Public bug reported: In the beta livecd, I did apt-get install vnc4server. This worked in previous releases. Although the install worked and the vncserver started, the first problem was that attempting to type in the terminal window made it disappear! I started an emacs on that screen, and the same thing happened. Looking at the processes, I noticed x-window-manager was running, so I kill it, installed open-motif-clients and started mwm instead. All the windows came back (now decorated Motif-style), so they were still there. I remember using that emacs for a little while without any problems. Later I started up another emacs, and it dumped core, saying Gdk-ERROR **: Failed to get keymap When I tried to report that as a bug using the bug-reporter, the firefox that came up on that screen had strange colors which made the page unreadable, i.e. the background was a deep bloodred. [Bug 647381] [NEW] requirement for up-to-date packages in livecd makes reporting bugs in livecd nearly impossible
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: apport More than 90% of the time when I encounter a beta Meerkat bug, I'm told I don't have up-to-date packages and therefore cannot report the bug. The dialog lists the packages, but I haven't found a way to copy and paste the list elsewhere to be able to upgrade the packages except tediously by hand. Generally it takes more than one try. Apport also apparently decides to ignore crashes of applications after the first two, so that causing the crash again after a few tries at getting updated packages no longer automatically generates the popup crash notification. Finally, sometimes it is just not feasible (due to memory constraints) to update all the packages if I'm running from a livecd. My machines have systems installed on them which need to work, so I do all of my newer-release testing via livecd. This makes reporting bugs MUCH more frustrating and time-consuming. I downloaded the latest released ksh93 from the ATT research site, and built it myself under the livecd beta Meerkat. It reports itself as Version JM 93t+ 2010-06-21. It too gets a segv while running my script on /usr/lib, though the stack trace looks quite different. -- ksh93 crashed with SIGSEGV https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/638867 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 638867] Re: ksh93 crashed with SIGSEGV
I whittled down the script to something manageable. The following script will cause the memory fault if given a sufficiently deep directory. For the beta meerkat livecd, /usr/lib is sufficiently deep and /usr/bin (the default script argument if none is supplied) is not. Here's the script: #!/bin/ksh function recursive_directory_read { typeset function_to_call directory_to_read filename is_link is_directory directory_to_read=$1 function_to_call=$2 ls -a $directory_to_read | while read f ; do if [[ $f = '.' || $f = '..' ]] ; then continue elif [[ -L $directory_to_read/$f ]] ; then continue elif [[ -d $directory_to_read/$f ]] ; then recursive_directory_read $directory_to_read/$f $function_to_call else $function_to_call $directory_to_read $f fi done } function print_it { echo $1/$2 } function testit { recursive_directory_read $1 print_it } ulimit -c unlimited testit ${1:-/usr/bin} -- ksh93 crashed with SIGSEGV https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/638867 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 633983] [NEW] can't boot Meerkat beta amd64 livecd on core 2 duo macbook
Public bug reported: Previous release livecd's were bootable by holding down option while the cd was in the drive and selecting the Windows cd. Trying this with the Meerkat beta desktop livecd image (md5sum verified) I just get two numbers (1. and 2.) which look like they should be labeling some text but there is no text visible and the message to select CD-ROM boot type. Typing either a 1 or a 2 doesn't do anything. Googling revealed that some Windows beta iso images had the same problem booting on Macs; apparently in this case it was an issue that the Windows version had EFI support (and so didn't use the BIOS fallback) but was assuming a newer version of EFI. There were some other posts which claimed that it was that the iso image was generated incorrectly (something having to do with ISO9660 versions). Unfortunately, even though I develop software for a living, there is nothing I can do to help debug this (except try newer versions) since once I get to that message, everything seems unresponsive. The upshot is that a useful thing which I did frequently in older versions (i.e. boot the 64bit desktop livecd on this macbook) no longer works. ** Affects: linux (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- can't boot Meerkat beta amd64 livecd on core 2 duo macbook https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/633983 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 625910] [NEW] alpha3 meerkat livecd loses mouse cursor after switching to console
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg I booted the alph3 meerkat desktop livecd and got a gnome desktop; I then downloaded fbi, switched to the console, and made sure fbi worked in the console to view images (it did). When I switched back to the gnome desktop, I no longer had a mouse cursor. In the past when something like this has happened, it usually worked to logout and start a new X session. I tried that, but didn't get back my mouse cursor. Moreover, the new session was on console 8 instead of console 7 (where the original one was). Subsequent logouts and re-login got console 9 and 10!! I filed this under xorg, but it may be that there is a console-switching problem. The remnants of the old xorg consoles show the purple background, it that's a clue. [Bug 625313] [NEW] alpha3 meerkat desktop livecd can't play DVD because it can't find the DVD source plugin
Public bug reported: When I insert a non-protected DVD, I'm offered to launch movie player to play it. When it starts up, it offers to search for a plugin, but that search fails to find the right plugin. I tried enabling the other repositories by hand first, and it still fails. [Bug 625313] Re: alpha3 meerkat desktop livecd can't play DVD because it can't find the DVD source plugin
This appears to be due to a name mismatch in the packages. The documentation (and presumably the code) mentions gst-plugins-base, -good, -bad and -ugly. If I go into Synaptic, I find gstreamer0.10 -plugins-base, etc. If I load the longer-named packages by hand, then when I insert the DVD it plays. -- alpha3 meerkat desktop livecd can't play DVD because it can't find the DVD source plugin https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/625313 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

In Maverick Meerkat alpha3 livecd on laptop (1280x800), the workaround given about of two Alt-F10's doesn't work; the second Alt-F10 restores the window to its original (too-large) size. However, the workaround of holding down Alt while clicking and dragging on the body of the window allows getting to the resize corner to actually reduce the size of the window. -- in netbook remix, emacs23 but not emacs22 sizes wrongly in initial full-screen opening https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/548846 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 622227] [NEW] Maverick Meerkat alpha 3 livecd: resuming after dropping into single doesn't work
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: upstart If you boot the livecd, press space to allow selecting options, pick english, press f6 and esc to get the kernel boot line, remove the quiet and splash options and add single, then hit return to boot, you get the normal startup up to the choice menu which allows (among other things) dropping into a root prompt (with or without networking). Even if you don't choose one of those, but instead pick resume normal boot, you end up in a command prompt, not in the gui. In older releases, after resuming normal boot you ended up in the normal gnome desktop. I need this at work where I have to ensure that the name my laptop uses for its DHCP request matches the name the DHCP server has stored, i.e. it can be called ubuntu as is the default. I'm guessing that the package for this is upstart; I couldn't find anything on the web page for picking packages about boot-time startup problems. [Bug 622246] [NEW] meerkat alpha3 emacs initial window size too big
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: emacs23 after apt-get install emacs, running emacs results in a window that is too big, i.e. the mode line is off the bottom of the screen. Even after hiding the tool bar and menu bar, it is still too big. If I autohide both the top and bottom panels, it is still too big, although you get to see about half of the mode line. I think that the top decoration bar is taller than it used to be, and that is throwing off the height calculation in this case. In older releases the emacs window was properly sized. My laptop screen is 1280x800; I suspect on a much bigger monitor these problems wouldn't be apparent. This is not architecture-specific, I tried on an i386 VM and got the same symptoms. This problem is exacerbated by the fact that you can't resize the window yourself since the bottom right corner (where the resize right-angle-icon would appear) is hidden below the bottom edge of the screen (even with both of the panels autohidden). -- meerkat alpha3 emacs initial window size too big https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/622246 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

This might widen the interest, since frame buffer switching happens in a much larger number of contexts than just going into single user mode. Actually, I spoke too soon. It works to go to single use mode; it doesn't work to go back. It hangs in Checking battery state. It is frustrating that this all just worked in older versions of Ubuntu. Another reason that I need to go to single user mode, is that at work I'm not allowed to connect any machine to the network unless it provides the right hostname to DHCP. In older versions of Ubuntu I could just boot the livecd in single user mode, edit /etc/hostname and /etc/hosts, and continue booting. In more recent versions, networking is started up (with the wrong name) as part of the startup scripts, so I would have to boot disconnected, take it down to single user mode without networking, edit those files and then bring it back up. After that I could connect the network. That was a great deal more inconvenient than before, but at least it was doable. Now I can't figure out a way to do this at all. ** Changed in: gdm (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete = New -- telinit 1 (or init 1) doesn't work in karmic beta livecd https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/446225 You received this bug notification because you are a direct subscriber of the bug. -- telinit 1 (or init 1) doesn't work in karmic beta livecd https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/446225 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

My intention was just to see if I would get more messages to the console, but it made it work! My guess (as yet unconfirmed) is that it was really waiting for the response to the menu asking what to do, just not displaying it correctly. Is there perhaps some locking on console switching causing a deadlock? Indeed, if I blindly type the right number of downarrows (6) to get to the non-networking root prompt option of the menu, then blindly type /sbin/shutdown -r now, it reboots. So it is the display that's the problem, not getting into single user mode. Perhaps the kernel IS involved? I also think that the priority should be higher, since there are many times when x wedges in such a way that I need to get into single user mode. This worked correctly up through jaunty and has prevented me from upgrading my machines past jaunty. ctrl-alt-delete DOES eject the CD, so it must have taken it as a sign to restart, but there are no additional console messages ** Changed in: gdm (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided = Low ** Changed in: gdm (Ubuntu) Status: Confirmed = Incomplete -- telinit 1 (or init 1) doesn't work in karmic beta livecd https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/446225 You received this bug notification because you are a direct subscriber of the bug. -- telinit 1 (or init 1) doesn't work in karmic beta livecd https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/446225 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 483271] [NEW] going to fullscreen of larger screen when scrolled right in vinagre always repositions to top left
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: vinagre In older versions of vinagre (i.e. the one in Jaunty), if you scrolled to a non-top-left position in windowed mode and then switched to fullscreen, it left you positioned where your top left corner had been. Now, in Karmic, it always repositions you to the top left, which makes getting to the righthand part of the screen impossible (except through scaling). [Bug 475721] [NEW] totem says it needs plugins to watch TV but neither says what it needs nor offers to get them
Public bug reported: Under the Movie menu, there is an item to Watch TV on DVB Adapter 0. If I select it, I get a popup dialog appears which says: Totem cannot play this type of media (Digital Television) because you do not have the appropriate plugins to handle it. Please install the necessary plugins and restart Totem to be able to play this media. However, neither this message nor the help documentation mention what plugins are needed. At other times Totem has offered to go look for a plugin, but it didn't do this either. Finally, under Edit / Plugins, there is nothing listed which sounds remotely applicable. Presumably they are the already loaded plugins and if I could get the right plugin for digital TV watching, it would appear there. [Bug 414996] Re: [karmic alpha 4] grub re-writes boot sector on wrong drive on mythbuntu install
This happened to me too. There are two problems: 1) it defaults to installing grub on hd0 even if you are installing ubuntu to a different drive. 2) it doesn't say anything about it in the summary list, so you don't know you need to click the advanced button to change it. These are, properly speaking, not grub problems but installer problems and is not new to grub2 but has been happening at least as far back as feisty when installing to external drives. The grub part of the bug is that it writes the mbr onto one drive with the first part of the loader which then expects to load the rest from another drive. If the former is the internal disk and the latter is an external (and therefore not necessarily available) disk, this is a recipe for disaster. I think grub should refuse to write the mbr on a drive which doesn't have the rest of it. -- [karmic alpha 4] grub re-writes boot sector on wrong drive on mythbuntu install https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/414996 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 445359] Re: can't enable wireless network in karmic beta livecd
This might be a key ring issue. I can enable the wireless from the top bar; in doing so it asks me to create a keyring password. If I then try to use system / preferences / network connections to edit the network, it prompts me if I want to let the application use the keyring. If I allow it, then I can actually get a non-greyed-out apply button in the edit dialog for the wireless network connection. I can then check the check box for Allow all users and click apply. However, that immediately disconnects the wireless network! -- can't enable wireless network in karmic beta livecd https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/445359 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 446225] [NEW] telinit 1 (or init 1) doesn't work in karmic beta livecd
Public bug reported: If you issue sudo telinit 1 or sudo init 1 in a live session, you briefly see the console dialog which asks you what to do (and from which in Jaunty you could select drop into a root command prompt), but it is immediately replaced by a non-functional gui, i.e. you see the desktop background but neither the keyboard nor mouse work (except for ctl-alt-delete which restarts). I can't capture the dmesg output because nothing seems to work, but as it scrolled by I saw a bunch of messages indicating various processes respawning. I tried this with the beta karmic desktop livecd on three machines; only on one of them did I get a glimpse of the console menu selector. Looking at the various consoles, there was a line on one of them which indicated that the system was going into single user mode.
