[Bug 1815127] Re: Evolution fails to properly parse Date: header

2019-03-08 Thread Ken Pratt
It seems that the parser in evolution fails to parse:

Date: Thu, 31 Jan 2019 19:15:39 + (UTC)

The above is the actual header from the SMTP conversation.

[Bug 1815127] [NEW] Evolution fails to properly parse Date: header

2019-02-07 Thread Ken Pratt
Public bug reported:

I received an email with a date header of:

Date: Thu, 31 Jan 2019 19:15:39 + (UTC)

It is incorrectly show as

Thu 14:15

In the Date column of the message display. The month abbreviation and
day number are not present. The email shows up sorted incorrectly by the
Thu 14:15 date (as if it were within the last week) instead of the
actual Thu, 31 Jan 2019 19:15:39 + (UTC) date.

Perhaps it is the redundant timezone indicator?

Thank you for the great work!

[Bug 1621203] Re: evolution/totem/gthumb crashes when run in vnc session

2018-07-04 Thread Ken Pratt
A similar error occurs when one attempts to run evolution on a remote X
Desktop. It seems there is a dependency on direct rendering which is not
available in either the VNC or remote X windows environments.

Recreate with:

# ssh -X servername [where the server is running Ubuntu 18.04 Desktop]
# evolution
libGL error: No matching fbConfigs or visuals found
libGL error: failed to load driver: swrast
libEGL warning: DRI2: failed to authenticate

(evolution:25704): Gdk-ERROR **: 06:48:35.588: The program 'evolution' received
an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadRequest (invalid request code or no such operation)'.
  (Details: serial 207 error_code 1 request_code 153 (DRI2) minor_code 1)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the GDK_SYNCHRONIZE environment
variable to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)
Trace/breakpoint trap (core dumped)

[Bug 1740416] [NEW] nfs and cifs mounts are attempted too early in boot process

2017-12-28 Thread Ken Pratt
Public bug reported:

Systemd should automatically wait for networking and DNS systems to be
in place prior to attempting to mount CIFS or NFS filesystems. This was
the behavior under Ubuntu 17.04. After upgrading to 17.10 the behavior
changed. Systemd no longer waits for networking and DNS to be
initialized before attempting to mount network filesystems. This
requires me to manually mount these systems or add a hack in the
rc.local file.

Adding _netdev to the fstab entry does not change the incorrect
behavior. Here is the example that worked under 17.04 but no longer
works under 17.10:

drobo5n:/mnt/DroboFS/Shares/PublicNFS /mnt/drobo5n nfs async,proto=tcp 0
0

I also tried:

drobo5n:/mnt/DroboFS/Shares/PublicNFS /mnt/drobo5n nfs
_netdev,async,proto=tcp 0 0

[Bug 1740286] [NEW] gnome-session fails over SSH to remote PC

2017-12-27 Thread Ken Pratt
Public bug reported:

Using Ubuntu 17.10 Desktop 64 bit I am unable to start a gnome-session
on my local Ubuntu 17.04 Desktop inside a Xephyr server over SSH. This
is probably the same bug as https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source
/gnome-session/+bug/1251281 but I don't see a fix for 17.10 and could
not add 17.10 to that bug report. When I try, I get:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-
session/+bug/1251281/+distrotask

Setup:

local PC is 64 bit Ubuntu Desktop 17.04 - fully updated
remote PC is 64 bit Ubuntu Desktop 17.10 - fully updated

start Xephyr on local PC using:

~$ Xephyr :2 -screen 1280x900 &

set up DISPLAY

~$ export DISPLAY=:2

ssh to remote PC

~$ ssh -YC user@remote

now logged into remote - do a simple test:

~$ xeyes

I see the xeyes open on my local desktop inside the Xephyr window
success. Press CTRL-C in terminal to exit xeyes.

Try to start gnome-session on remote with:

~$ gnome-session --debug

I get the following on the console:

gnome-session-binary[17018]: DEBUG(+): Enabling debugging
gnome-session-binary[17018]: DEBUG(+): hardware acceleration check failed:
Child process exited with code 1
gnome-session-binary[17018]: WARNING: software acceleration check failed: Child
process exited with code 1
gnome-session-binary[17018]: CRITICAL: We failed, but the fail whale is dead.
Sorry

I expected a non-accelerated gnome session to start inside the Xephyr
window. It does not.

[Bug 1595767] [NEW] bluetooth HW not initialized Dell XPS 15 9530 (Ubuntu 16.04)

2016-06-23 Thread Ken Pratt
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 16.04 desktop edition does not properly initialize the bluetooh
hardware in the Dell XPS 15 9530. lsusb show the hardware as:

Bus 003 Device 004: ID 0a5c:216f Broadcom Corp. BCM20702A0 Bluetooth

Running bluethoothctl as root show only a driver named:

[bluetooth]# list
Controller AC:D1:B8:C0:CE:E4 ChromeLinux_7236 [default]

I don't know what ChromLinux_7236 is. It does not seem related to
Broadcom but rather Google.

Scanning for bluethooth devices just timeout - assuming the
ChromLinux_7236 is acting as some sort of stub answering the API but not
providing any actual bluetooth device scanning.

[Bug 986321] Re: READ/Write FPDMA QUEUED failures

2014-08-26 Thread Ken Pratt
btrfs raid10 setups cause the hardware reset to happen very frequently.
I have a eSATA enclosue (SansDigital) that has two eSATA ports and
contains 2 banks of 4 drives. 4 per eSATA port (port multiplier). I
encounter no problems when using RAID1 with BTRFS across 8 drives.
However, when I use the btrfs balance start -dconvert=raid10
-mconvert=raid10 to convert the set of 8 drives from a RAID1 to a
RAID10, it all falls apart with SATA hardware resets. I am guessing
that the btrfs driver sits above all this and that the error is in the
SATA code and not the btrfs code which relies on it.

[Bug 925364] Re: rpc.gssd exits immediately

2013-11-02 Thread Ken Pratt
I don't user Kerberos. However, If I don't want a long wait when
mounting NFSv4 shares, I must enable this on the client. It results in:

Nov 2 13:31:50 poogoo rpc.gssd[2342]: ERROR:
gssd_refresh_krb5_machine_credential: no usable keytab entry found in keytab
/etc/krb5.keytab for connection with host fit.thepratts.info
Nov 2 13:31:50 poogoo rpc.gssd[2342]: ERROR: No credentials found for
connection to server fit.thepratts.info

But the mount occurs very quickly and seems to be ok.

There should be a way on the client side to state that Kerberos is not
being used.

[Bug 585657] Re: Transfering large files to nfs mount causes system freeze

2012-05-30 Thread Ken Pratt
This bug is still alive and kicking in kernel: 3.0.0-12-generic (as part
of Mint 12)

Linux fit3.thepratts.info 3.0.0-12-generic #20-Ubuntu SMP Fri Oct 7
14:56:25 UTC 2011 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

This is running on an unmodified up-to-date fitPC3 running Mint 12.

When I attempt to write large files from another Linux box over NFSv4 I
get several hundred MBs into the copy then the NFS client connection
hangs indifinately. The NFS server still responds to other clients
without probelms.

Is there any way the patched that fixed this problem has been reverted
in current kernels?

I have a Gig ethernet through a gig switch to a gig port on a Fit PC3
running Mint 12 and exporting a NFS share via NFSv4. I can not
successfully copy a file (movie rip - large file) from a client Linux
box running Ubuntu 12.04 to this server. It hangs. I can read large
files without a hitch.

I realize I am late to this dialog, but am I know the only one suffering
this problem? I do not want to redo everything using CIFS (SMB).
However, I have never had a problem with CIFS - just don't like the
permission and ownership mapping.

[Bug 996473] [NEW] Status selections in drop down menu do not work

2012-05-08 Thread Ken Pratt
Public bug reported:

Empathy is up and running and I can chat. I have accounts with
Facebook, Google Talk, Yahoo!, and Nearby (broadcast). The drop down
menu under the envelope shows that I am Offline b ut I am not. And, I
can not change the status to other than offline. I attached my
/etc/network/interfaces on the assumption that perhaps it is playing a
role along with NetworkManager.

I should be able to change my status to any of Available, Away, Busy, or
Invisible. Clicking on any of those selections results in nothing. My
status is not changed nor is the indicator.

Thanks you.

[Bug 837246] Re: User name shown as [Invalid UTF-8] in live session

2012-04-05 Thread Ken Pratt
Bug is in indicator-session-0.3.7.1

I'm using Ubuntu 11.10 64bit. My account info comes from NIS. Perhaps
indicator is not NIS aware? I guessed this may be the problem so
created an override in /etc/passwd for my account GECOS field.

Here is my entry

I still get [Invalid UTF-8] as the indicator displayed user name.

[Bug 561210] Re: Writing big files to NFS target causes system lock up

2012-03-29 Thread Ken Pratt
Bug is back in 3.0.0-17-generic #30-Ubuntu SMP Thu Mar 8 20:45:39 UTC
2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

When copying a large file over nfs4v, Nautilus reports 606.6MB in the
first progress bar update to the GUI then hangs forever. The rest of my
desktop remains responsive. Nautilus, however, is not. And, I can ssh
to the machine that is exporting the NFS share to which I am copying -
so networking is still fine. However, any attempt to access the NFS
shares from the command line simply hang forever.

I am copying over GigE to a FitPCI2 (small atom based computer).

I am using a fully updated Ubuntu

LSB Version:
core-2.0-amd64:core-2.0-noarch:core-3.0-amd64:core-3.0-noarch:core-3.1-amd64:core-3.1-noarch:core-3.2-amd64:core-3.2-noarch:core-4.0-amd64:core-4.0-noarch
Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description:Ubuntu 11.10
Release:11.10
Codename: oneiric

The only reported error shows up in syslog. It is the error indicating
that the nautilus process is unresponsive.

The only way to clear the situation is to shutdown - which halts - I
assume stuck on unmounting the NFS shares. So I have to power cycle.

I am using nfsv4 via autofs.

[Bug 961089] [NEW] NetworkManager does not understand that a bridge is an active net connection

2012-03-21 Thread Ken Pratt
Public bug reported:

I set up a br0 (bridge) network on my destop PC in order to allow my
virtual machines via KVM to be directly on my LAN instead of natted.
Below is my /etc/network/interfaces file The problem is that when
logged in to the X session, NetworkManager reports (via D-Bus) that I
have no network connection. Any desktop apps that rely on this D-Bus
message won't connect. Empathy is a big one that fits in this category.
I am forced to assign my eth0 NIC an IP address of 127.0.0.1. This is a
bad practice. NetworkManager needs to either understand bridges or have
an override of some type. Can I simply remove NetworkManager as a work
around? Will the lack of an application producing the network connected
D-Bus messge mean that no app will think I am network connected?

[Bug 939434] [NEW] Xnest and Xephyr stopped working after recent update (corrupted mem)

2012-02-23 Thread Ken Pratt
Public bug reported:

I keep my PC up-2-date with Oneric. Within the last week, an update
caused both Xephyr and Xnest to no longer work. Most likely an Xserver
update or Glibc update. I run with the following command:

Xephyr :1 -query 192.168.15.70 -screen 1400x1050

And see the window pop up briefly then the crash. I am attempting to
connect to a Virtual Machine (kvm) that has XDMCP running in an
up-2-date install of Precise Pangolin. Running using Xnest instead of
Xephyr results in the same.

[Bug 926245] Re: update-manager does not update due to partial upgrade

2012-02-11 Thread Ken Pratt
Fixed - sort of...

I installed synaptic

 sudo apt-get install synaptic

Then did a package update and install in synaptic

 sudo synaptic

then press 'Reload' then 'Mark All Upgrades' then 'Apply'

You will probably have to reboot to complete the install. After
rebooting, my update-manager no longer stated that I had a Partial
Upgrade. Instead, it just shows several packages that are greyed out
and that I can not install and indicates there are no updates to
install. I assume they are held back for some reason.

[Bug 874755] Re: calendar [Invalid UTF-8] (encoding problem)

2012-01-24 Thread Ken Pratt
I use the English language (en_US.UTF-8) and tried the above solution
(reproduce below) and it did not work. I am using the baseline as of
01/24/2012 (fully updated).

sudo locale-gen -purge
sudo dpkg-reconfigure locales
Reboot and log-in.

Still get [Invalid UTF-8]

[Bug 884860] [NEW] Nautilus won't browse network

2011-11-01 Thread Ken Pratt
Public bug reported:

After recent update, I can no longer browse my Samba server. I can,
however, enter a smb url successfully.

Using smb://fit/ in the nautilus location bar works
Using smb:// does not work nor does double clicking on Browse Network

The reported error is:

Failed to retrieve share list from server. Please select another
viewer and try again.

However, from the command line, I can run:

smbclient -L //fit

I provide a null password at the password prompt and receive the full
shares list.

[Bug 829556] [NEW] PDF thumbnailer hanging for a time and not working

2011-08-19 Thread Ken Pratt
Public bug reported:

If I save a PDF from an email message to my desktop, Nautilus attempts
to create a thumbnail. The attempt fails. I see the clock indicating
that a thumbnail is being created. While this is occurring, I can not
interact with the desktop using the mouse. Then, after about 45
seconds, the thumb-nailing process quits with a default PDF thumbnail.
Double clicking on the PDF opens it just fine. The PDF files are not
corrupt or unreadable.

[Bug 813581] [NEW] libdrm-nouveau1a

2011-07-20 Thread Ken Pratt
Public bug reported:

I installed the latest nvidia display driver for my GTX-460 video card.
In order to boot, I need to disable the nouveau model. I do this
manually by adding:

nouveau.modeset=0 to the GRUB kernel boot line.

I am trying to remove the actual nouveau and related packages so that I
need not manually disable at boot time. However, when I attempt to
remove the libdrm-nouveau1a package using Synaptic, I am asked to mark
well over a hundred packages for removal. If these packages were
removed it would render the system unusable. Some examples of the
packages that will be removed:

acpi-support
agave
aisleriot
alsa-base
apparmor
compiz
cron
evolution
gdm
many of the X related binaries
update-manager

Something is either wrong with the package dependency check or half the
system lists libdrm-nouveau1a as the only dependent package.

Anyway, how can I remove this libdrm-nouveau1a package?

[Bug 778468] [NEW] gnome-settings-daemon has to be killed and a new instance started

2011-05-06 Thread Ken Pratt
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-settings-daemon

With an up-2-date system, when I log in via GDM, gnome-settings-daemon
is running but is apparently not providing settings. I have to kill the
process then start it anew. Once I do, all is well. There seems to be
a race condition here.

[Bug 733800] [NEW] Unity 2d problems

2011-03-12 Thread Ken Pratt
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: unity

Under Unity 2D, there is no log out option. The applets that normally

[Bug 731434] [NEW] gnome-settings-daemon not shutting down on log out

2011-03-08 Thread Ken Pratt
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-settings-daemon

It seems the gnome-settings-daemon is not operating correctly. I am not
sure of its proper operation - however, if I log in, then log out, then
log back in, my .xsession-errors reports:

You can only run one xsettings manager at a time; exiting

If I kill -9 the gnome-settings-daemon then run 'gnome-settings-daemon'
all is well. (Desktop is restored to proper look and feel)

[Bug 713807] Re: Can't see where ripped music is saved

2011-02-07 Thread Ken Pratt
If I do not konw the name of the song, it makes it very difficult to
find it in the Rhythmbox listing. If I rip a disk that has a
fingerprint that is not recognized so no metadata is retrieved, it
becomes very difficult to find what was ripped. Normally, I'd gor to
the directory and search by date. Then use Picard to help find and
apply the meta data.

So this is no so much a bug, but rather a feature request. If I could
see the directory to which a CD is ripped, it would make this case much
easier from a usage perspective,

[Bug 654916] Re: Gnome Panel Painting Incorrectly

2010-11-12 Thread Ken Pratt
I went back and took a closer look. Indeed my wife had set a custom
background. I set it to use the theme default and the blur/gradient
problem went away. However, a new problem showed. When I made the
change, I got a rectangle that was not painted in the panel - see new
screen-shot - of lower left hand corner of my screen. Their is an
unpainted area just to the right of the Close All Windows applet.

[Bug 41301] Re: Mouse clicks stop working sporadically

2010-11-02 Thread Ken Pratt
I have the same left mouse click stop working problem. However, this
only occurs on my laptop that has a touch pad. Left clicking does not
stop working on the touch pad by itself (no external mouse attached) and
in tandem. Even when the external mouse looses its click, the touch pad
does not. When the external mouse does loose its click, I just unplug
it then plug it back in. I've never had the problem on my desktop
machine (no touch pad, just an external USB mouse.)

you are ripping. Rip it, play it, encode it, write it all at the same
time.

[Bug 654916] [NEW] Gnome Panel Painting Incorrectly

2010-10-04 Thread Ken Pratt
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

After today's updates, the gnome-panel at the bottom of the screen is

Logging out then back in fixes the problem. The problem seems only to
occur on the first log in after a boot up.

Is there an easier way to log out? With the screen corruption, I can
not select the log out button so have to kill GDM then start it from the
command line.

[Bug 653615] [NEW] Authentication Hangs (no progress indication)

2010-10-02 Thread Ken Pratt
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: software-center

The Authenticate dialog hangs for a long time with no indication that
anything is happening. The dialog is misleading as it pops up after I
have entered my password but states, To install or remove software, you
need to authenticate. Entering my password authenticates my identity.
So, I have already authenticated... Screenshot attached.
