[Bug 1912034] Re: At end of install process, installer said "fatal error"
Thanks, Chris. I guess we can chalk this one up as an edge case, as I imagine that most folks just install one (or maybe 2) OS's, and maybe people who are doing multi-boot installs could be assumed to know enough to easily sort that out without further prompting/guidance from the installer itself. I suspect that in my case, the easier option might simply be to back up my data to an external drive, then obliterate the existing partition table and just install Mate freshly over the top of it. A crude method perhaps, but it should work easily enough. Thanks again for your help - unless you want to comment further, I am happy to close this ticket now. [Bug 1912034] Re: At end of install process, installer said "fatal error"
Hi Chris, thanks for your reply. Can you point me to a link for some "how-to" instructions on creating / resizing that partition, and any necessary configuration of it? I haven't created a dedicated EFI/ESP partition thus far, only what appears in the attached screenshot of GParted. [Bug 1912034] Re: At end of install process, installer said "fatal error"
So, after the above, another dialogue box appeared which said "an unrecoverable error occurred", and said that a desktop session would be started so that I could investigate the error, which then booted me into a MATE live session. As I didn't know how to investigate the issue, I simply attempted to reboot into the MATE partition. At this point, I got a black screen with white text saying: "You are in emergency mode. After logging in, type 'journalctl -xb' to view system logs, 'systemctl reboot' to reboot, ..." - none of the options presented got me to a workable desktop. [Bug 1912034] [NEW] At end of install process, installer said "fatal error"
Public bug reported: ...and yet another dialogue box said "Installation complete. You need to restart the computer..." This happened while installing Ubuntu Mate 20.10 onto a partition alongside other existing partitions with Ubuntu & Linux Mint installed on them. I nominated the new partition with Ubuntu Mate (sda5) mountpoint as root, as the installer wouldn't let me continue without doing so, even though I had done this previously with other installs alongside this one on the same laptop, and Grub 2.x is already on this computer & has worked fine at bootup. [Bug 1872392] [NEW] Ubuntu Studio Installer makes a mess of Ubuntu's "Show Applications" screen
Public bug reported: Steps to reproduce: Install Ubuntu 20.04 beta (vanilla) Install Ubuntu Studio tools via official installer (See screenshot) Before installing Studio's tools, the "Show Applications" screen showed actual applications. Now, that screen has increased from 2 pages of apps to 10 (!!!), and is cluttered up with a bunch of things that aren't stand-alone apps, for example: - AT1 / Zita AT1: can be clicked on from the "Show applications" screen, but seemingly does nothing - lots of things that I presume are audio or video filters, or other plug-ins for Studio applications. These plug-ins have an icon that reads "LSP" and include Analysers, Compressors, Delay Effects, etc. Preferred behaviour: 1) Hide filters & plug-ins from the "Show Applications" screen, & display them separately to apps. Maybe viewable under a dedicated tab? 2) Make it easily apparent to tell which filters/plug-ins are associated with which app or apps. [Bug 1872389] [NEW] minor usability quirk at package selection screen
Public bug reported: Steps to reproduce: Install Ubuntu 20.04 beta Install Ubuntu Tools on top with official installer On the package selection screen, select whichever packages you want from the left-hand sidebar (I'm pretty sure I selected all of them, but possibly not the bottom one.) Then press the "enable backports PPA" button, and all the packages you've just selected are de-selected, and you then need to go and reselect each package before proceeding. Not difficult, but less than optimal. Preferred behaviour: If enabling the backports PPA needs to occur before selecting packages, make that step precede package selection; OR retain present installer workflow, but don't de-select packages when the "enable backports PPA" is pressed. Another improvement would see an option for "select all Ubuntu Studio packages" (probably excluding gnome-branding), rather than having to select each package individually. I think this might be like a "full install / custom install" kind of option, such as seen in VLC, Libre Office, etc. Thanks, Ken. *** ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 20.04 Package: ubuntustudio-installer 0.07 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 5.4.0-21.25-generic 5.4.27 Uname: Linux 5.4.0-21-generic x86_64 ApportVersion: 2.20.11-0ubuntu26 Architecture: amd64 CasperMD5CheckResult: skip CurrentDesktop: ubuntu:GNOME Date: Mon Apr 13 12:23:02 2020 InstallationDate: Installed on 2020-04-12 (0 days ago) InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 20.04 LTS "Focal Fossa" - Beta amd64 (20200402) PackageArchitecture: all SourcePackage: ubuntustudio-installer UpgradeStatus: No upgrade log present (probably fresh install) ** Affects: ubuntustudio-installer (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: amd64 apport-bug focal -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1872389 Title: minor usability quirk at package selection screen To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntustudio-installer/+bug/1872389/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Public bug reported: Steps to reproduce: - within Application Launcher, right-click on various apps, then select "Add to panel (Widget)" Expected outcome: All apps should have their thumbnail appear on the panel. [Bug 1764932] [NEW] Xubuntu 18.04 i386 beta 2: After splash screen, installation hangs on black screen
Public bug reported: Downloaded Xubuntu 18.04 i386 beta 2, checked sha256sum, created bootable USB via a known-working ubuntu machine. The first thing that appeared was an error message "gfxboot.c32: not a COM32R image", but I pressed tab, typed "live" and hit enter, and the installation proceeded. Xubuntu splash screen appeared with loading animation. Once this disappeared, I saw a line of text flash up at the top of the screen (too quick for me to read), then the installation hangs on a black screen, with a grey bar faintly visible across the top of the screen. I tried the install process again, but got the same result. Now, a few footnotes: 1) the error message "gfxboot.c32: not a COM32R image" is the same one I reported on a daily build of Lubuntu 18.04 back in February under Bug #1747329, with two important differences: a) in that case but not this one, the installation proceeded fine after pressing tab then typing "live", and b) as noted on that bug report, that error message is no longer apparent as of Lubuntu 18.04 beta 2. 2) The machine I tried this install on is a 2005-era Dell Latitude D610 laptop, 1GB RAM, and I've successfully installed several *buntus on this machine before, including 18.04 daily builds & betas for Lubuntu and Ubuntu Budgie. I haven't been able to run apport on under Xubuntu (obviously), but have attached apport logs to this ticket taken from that machine during earlier bug reports. [Bug 1754819] Re: Using Gnome Settings' search tool works for some but not all items located under top-level menu categories
Jeremy, it seems that this issue has already been reported upstream, but the issue has been closed and I don't yet know how to reopen it: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-control-center/issues/1 I'd edit the desktop.in.in files directly myself, but am a newcomer to the process for doing so. Any pointers to how-to's, etc? Also, on the issue of Gnome having two upstream bugtrackers, I note that according to the following link: https://wiki.gnome.org/Initiatives/DevelopmentInfrastructure/ ... they say that their plan is "Shortly after the new solution (Gitlab) is setup, disable issue reporting in Bugzilla (as well as new accounts, milestones, etc)." So I guess we can just use Gitlab for issues going forward. [Bug 1754819] Re: Using Gnome Settings' search tool works for some but not all items located under top-level menu categories
Jeremy, Daniel, Thanks for your replies. As per Daniel's suggestion, I've run apport, & have updated the bug title and description. I'll also lodge a bug report upstream as Jeremy suggests, and report back with a bug number. Jeremy, you've suggested that there are potentially multiple bugs here - I'm not sure I agree with this. I hope that by amending the bug description that I've summed up the over-arching issue, and that filing a bug report for each instance of the issue wouldn't be necessary. Please let me know your thoughts on this. With this in mind, I disagree with Daniel's assertion that the main issue in this bug report has already been fixed. [Bug 1754819] Re: Searching within Gnome Settings only works for top-level menu entries
This issue has been partially improved in the overnight update, but inconsistently. As some examples of the broader pattern I'm talking about here, searching for: - "screen" now brings up a plausible list of options, including screenshot, universal access, displays, etc. - "contrast" brings up Universal Access. All good. - "cursor" brings up no result, despite also being an option under Universal Access. - "sharing" brings up "sharing - control what you want to share with others", but does not bring up "desktop sharing". - "banner" brings up no result, even though "banner designer" is an option under Notifications > Applications. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1754819 Title: Searching within Gnome Settings only works for top-level menu entries To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-shell/+bug/1754819/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Public bug reported: (As seen in the latest daily build of 32bit Ubuntu Budgie) See attached screenshot, which shows a couple of examples of this issue: 1) different spellings of the same word within the one screen ("color" and "colour"). 2) spellings of words according to British English ("Behaviour") and American English ("maximized"). [Bug 1754813] [NEW] Software: searching for programs / packages doesn't work
Public bug reported: (As seen in Software v3.27.92, as present in the latest daily build of 32bit Ubuntu Budgie) Searching for various programs (Gimp, Kazaam, Abiword, Blender) does not find the program - "no application found". Searching for Firefox only returns a Gnome-shell extension called "Search Firefox Bookmarks Provider". ** Affects: gnome-software (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1754813 Title: Software: searching for programs / packages doesn't work To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-software/+bug/1754813/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1754812] [NEW] Software: default categories displaying very few entries
Public bug reported: (As seen in Software v3.27.92, as present in the latest daily build of 32bit Ubuntu Budgie for 18.04). With "All" selected by default at the top of the screen, clicking on any of the buttons for software categories (productivity, communication & news, etc) reveals only a handful of entries, when there are usually truckloads of them. See attached screenshot as an example. However, clicking on "Installed" software shows 53 entries, so at least that seems to be working OK. [Bug 1748115] Re: In Budgie Welcome / Getting Started, single-click install of web browsers fails without helpful notification
Thinking more broadly, I'd suggest that this bug highlights an overarching concept... In terms of user-friendliness as a key design principle, it'd be a good idea that wherever possible, any given error message does as many of the following as is viable in that specific situation: 1) At a minimum, explain what caused the fault. As one way to illustrate this concept, it's not enough for an image viewer to say 'cannot open file' when trying to open an image file. Ideally it should say WHY it cannot perform the desired task - e.g. 'file type <.XYZ> not supported', 'file size exceeds ', or whatever. 2) Suggest one or more troubleshooting steps in plain language, or some form of alternative / workaround. Where needed, this may involve linking to a URL for more info. 3) Enable a one-click automated error report / crash report, possibly with the option for the user to add explanatory comments, to be sent to the devs so as to better diagnose the cause of the fault, and to fix the issue for everybody affected. I'd point to both Firefox and Chrome, and particularly Firefox, as good exemplars of the above principles. See for example the dialogue boxes which appear when the browser hangs or crashes, or when you try to connect to URL while offline. [Bug 1747345] Re: Software Centre - initial dialogue box disappears by itself, and error message appears
Hi Simon, I don't understand your response - I saw this bug on the freshest daily build that I downloaded less than 24hours ago. Unless you mean that a patch has been submitted / implemented since then? [Bug 112610] Re: Short battery life in MacBook
This problem is also noted in the following Ubuntu forum thread: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=432335&highlight=isight entitled "Short battery use with Macbook". Seems to be a common occurrence. Feedback, via email or the forum, welcome.
