[Bug 880071] [NEW] Can't install/use/boot 11.04 or 11.10

2011-10-22 Thread Klau3
Public bug reported:

System: Ubuntu 11.10 64-Bit up-to-date

Motherboard: ASUS M4A89GTD PRO/USB3
Graphic Card: Sapphire Radeon HD5450
Processor: AMD Phenom II X4 970 Black
RAM: Kingston KVR133D3N9 2x 4 GB
BIOS version 7.4.05: Standard Settings using IDE (default)

Be warned, this is a long one.

What you expected to happen:
The goal was to install Ubuntu 11.10 on my dads PC using a 64-Bit USB drive.

What happened instead:
Start conditions - Installed Ubuntu 10.10 64-Bit

After booting to the USB drive and selecting the language the problems
began. Selecting one of the following menu items resulted always in a
frozen system: 'Try without installing', 'Install', 'Check installation
medium'.

We downloaded new iso's and tried again using normal or alternate CD/USB
drives with the same result. All we could see was an blinking cursor in
the upper left corner after hitting enter on one of the menu items.

After googling without success = http://askubuntu.com/questions/70655
/cant-see-installation-main-screen

His PC was still running 10.10 because we had the same problems when trying to
installing 11.04 a half year ago.

So next thought was, okay lets boot to 10.10 and do an update using the
graphical update-manager. It was possible to install 11.04. First boot
stocked (system friezed again), but I managed after a couple of reboots
using the recovery mode and selecting an older Kernel
(2.6.35-30-generic) to boot into 11.04 and having a graphical shell.
After installing all updates and a reboot I started again the graphical
update-manager to install 11.10 - it worked so fare - installation was
successful (no errors).

After installing 11.10 I was able to boot normally + Internet was
working. This was the time I started 'ubuntu-bug ubuntu-desktop --save
10-22-2011-bug.apport', 'fdisk -l' and 'lshw' all added to this report.
After shutting down the PC and booting again (~10 times) I was only able
to boot one time to an graphical shell → no Internet connection that
time.

Every time I tried to boot regardless if I booted using the recovery
mode or the normal mode the system friezed on different stages.

Image 1 - don't know any more
Image 2 - 2.6.35-30-generic recovery mode
Image 3 - 3.0.0-12-generic recovery mode
Image 4 - 2.6.35 normal

I hope my description and the appended files might be of some use.

[Bug 879627] [NEW] Brasero crashes the hole system – simple reboot - pc still broken

2011-10-21 Thread Klau3
Public bug reported:

Oneiric 64-Bit up-to-date
Unity 3D
Brasero 3.2.0

What you expected to happen:
Burning an iso should work flawless.

What happened instead:

START
- Select and start iso image burning using a blank new CD.
- Firefox freezes and systems feels like it is under heavy load ~30 sec →
'System monitor' says low cup usage

MIDTERM
- Brasero seems to work correct for 1 minute. Firefox is no longer friezed.

END
- Brasero says that 'burning was successful', but the mouse wheel icon is still
turning and the disk not ejected. I wait ~1 min.
- Firefox freezes again. I try to open a terminal using a shortcut - doesn't
work.
- I try to open a terminal using the Dash - Dash opens, I can search and click
→ doesn't work. It's still possible to click on windows and get them focused -
but it isn't longer possible to really interact with the computer.
- I try 'CTRL+ALT+F1'. After login I get immediately this message:
[25612.493259] end_request:
I/O error, dev sda, sector 67385240

- Can't write only the error message is displayed.
- I try other virtual terminals with the same result.
- I do a hard reboot using the hardware key on the computer. Next shock - it
doesn't boot, new error message:
DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT DISK AND PRESS ENTER

- I pressed the power button of the computer longer to shut it down.
After a view seconds I booted again - everything is fine.

This isn't the first time I have problems with Brasero. Every new Ubuntu
iteration I'll give it a try and it never worked for me. Brasero doesn't work
either with my old Pentium 4. Thats why I use K3B most of the time - KDE
interface but it works.

  Description:Ubuntu 11.10
  Release:11.10
  software-center 5.0.1.4

  Problem 1
When clicking on a category that has no sub-categories like 'Accessories' or
'Fonts' mouse-back-button-click will highlight the entry over which the mouse
currently is instead of bringing me back to the USC main page.

  Problem 2
When in a category with sub-categories like 'Developer Tools' and clicking
the mouse-back-button when the mouse is over a sub-category icon nothing
happens (no back-to-main-action is preformed).

  Problem 3
When in a category with sub-categories like 'Developer Tools' and clicking
the mouse-back-button when the mouse is over a 'Top Rated Developer Tools' item
it acts like a left click and opens the top rated item instead of preforming a
back-to-main-menu action.

[Bug 878472] [NEW] Shotwell Viewer can't open files without file ending

2011-10-19 Thread Klau3
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu: Oneiric 64-Bit up-to-date
Unity: 3D
Shotwell: 0.11.2

What you expected to happen:
When double clicking a file that has no file ending with Shotwell Viewer it
should detect the image type and open it accordingly.

What happened instead:
Shotwell does not support the file format of /home/[USER]/Pictures/testImage.

'file testImage' in terminal:
testImage: PNG image data, 256 x 256, 8-bit/color RGBA, non-interlaced

[Bug 878498] [NEW] Shotwell Viewer - No fullscreen mode when double clicking an img

2011-10-19 Thread Klau3
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu: Oneiric 64-Bit up-to-date
Unity: 3D
Shotwell: 0.11.2

What you expected to happen:
When double clicking an image currently shown in Shotwell Viewer it should
switch to fullscreen mode. A second double click should switch back to previous
view mode.

What happened instead:
Nothing

PS: Would love to see image viewer react to the same actions as video
player does → double click = fullscreen on/off.

[Bug 876897] Re: Changing the default application for photos has no effect for several image types (png...)

2011-10-18 Thread Klau3
When changing the default photo application to 'Shotwell Viewer' to view
images I do assume that it opens all kind of image formats that it is
capable of viewing → .png

For a dev png might be not an image format but for the people out there
- they don't know what the differences of jpg and png are and when to
use the one or the other.

The reason I use 'Shotwell Viewer' is because of its editing skills, for
the rest I don't see (as user) any differences to 'Image Viewer'.

[Bug 877757] [NEW] Application loses focus for ever when pressing 2x CTRL+ALT+D

2011-10-18 Thread Klau3
Public bug reported:

System: Oneiric 64-Bit up-to-date
Unity: 3D

What you expected to happen:
When pressing CTRL+ALT+D all open application should be minimized and when
pressing it again → back to output state.

What happened instead:
When pressing the shortcut the first time all applications minimize as
expected. But when pressing it again to revive open windows the lastly focused
window becomes unfocusable for ever.

Why does the old SUPER+D shortcut not work any more, is this a bug too
or a design decision?

[Bug 876897] [NEW] Changing the default application for photos has no effect for several image types (png...)

2011-10-17 Thread Klau3
Public bug reported:

System: Oneiric up-to-date 64-Bit
Unity: 3D
gnome-control-center: 3.2.0-0ubuntu6

Affected: png, gif, svg, xpm (maybe more)

What you expected to happen:

Applications' from 'Image Viewer' to 'Shotwell Viewer' a double click on any
image should open the image in 'Shotwell Viewer'.

What happened instead:
When clicking on a png, gif, xpm or svg file Ubuntu will open them in 'Image
Viewer' instead of the system default image viewer → 'Shotwell Viewer'.

[Bug 871810] Re: Mouse 'back key' doesn't work always in USC

2011-10-11 Thread Klau3
I use USC 5.0.1.4 Oneiric 64-Bit up-to-date Unity 3D in VirtualBox.

Yes, mouse back button doesn't work everywhere in USC.
My bug report is a duplicate of #660050.
I'll try to describe the bug more precise in the other bug report now.

[Bug 660050] Re: Not reactive to mouse navigation buttons

2011-10-11 Thread Klau3
Bug is not fixed.

Oneiric 64-Bit up-to-date
USC 5.0.1.4
Unity 3D in VirtualBox
Mouse: Logitech MX 518

Problem 1
When clicking on a category that has no sub-categories like 'Accessories' or
'Fonts' mouse-back-button-click will highlight the entry over which the mouse
currently is instead of bringing me back to the USC main page.

Problem 2
When in a category with sub-categories like 'Developer Tools' and clicking the
mouse-back-button when the mouse is over a sub-category icon nothing happens
(no back-to-main-action is preformed).

Problem 3
When in a category with sub-categories like 'Developer Tools' and clicking the
mouse-back-button when the mouse is over a 'Top Rated Developer Tools' item it
acts like a left click and opens the top rated item instead of preforming a
back-to-main-menu action.

[Bug 871810] [NEW] Mouse 'back key' doesn't work always in USC

2011-10-10 Thread Klau3
Public bug reported:

Description:Ubuntu 11.10
Release:11.10
software-center 5.0.1.4

What should happen:
Pressing the back key »on the mouse« should bring the user back to the last USC
page as a click on the back button on the USC dose.

Bug description:
Open USC and click on 'Accessories'. When pressing the 'back key' »on the
mouse« USC should show the main menu, but instead it heights the entry over
which the back click was preformed.

I was pleasantly surprised to see the USC support mouse back key input
and hope the inconsistency will be solved in the future.

[Bug 830488] Re: Launcher Snap Function

2011-08-22 Thread Klau3
@Omer Akram
I know. I like to have intellihide on, so I can see the launcher when using
non-maximized windows and when working with a maximized window the launcher
will hide automatically.

The problem is that when rearranging windows to stay on the right site
of the launcher the user experience is kind of unfriendly (the matter of
this bug report). Right now we have only a snap functionality on the
desktop boarders, all I suggest is to add one for the launcher too.

2011-08-21 Thread Klau3
Public bug reported:

Oneiric: up-to-date

When dragging and moving a window near the launcher the window should snap to

When trying to place a window one the right site of the launcher and surpassing
it by only one pixel the launcher hides itself.

[Bug 821891] [NEW] Nautilus shortcut for new blank file

2011-08-06 Thread Klau3
Public bug reported:

Oneiric up-to-date
Nautilus 3.1.4

It would be nice if I could create a new file by pressing a shortcut like it is
already possible for folders (CTRL+SHIFT+N).
I suggest CTRL+SHIFT+F or M to creat a new blank file (M, because it is next to
N and has no affinity with CTRL+F).

[Bug 580295] Re: Unity: Alt-F2 not working

2011-02-24 Thread Klau3
I have an idea on how to solve this problem from an UI and usability
point of view:

Chromium has this neat 'quick search' feature that enables the user to
search a specific topic by typing 'keyword' + 'space' + 'search input'.
The same could be done with Unity dash, e.g. type 'l update-manager'
('l' for 'launch') to run 'update-manage' as when you pressed Alt-F2 in
the old days.

To get a better idea of what I mean, look at the mock-up.
Implementing this kind of keyword search would open the door to a lot of other
exiting search features like:
- 'w' for Wikipedia search
- 's' normal Internet search
- documentation search for a special topic like 'p' for python
- user specified keyword' to run - user specified launch/search script → hello
Zeitgeist :)
- and many more...

A similar type of 'specified search terminology' is already used by
Firefox, Chrome and DuckDuckGo in form of '!Bang' keywords. As the
Alt-F2 feature is used mostly by advanced users, I think previous Alt-F2
users would quickly adopt the new procedure.

Pros:
- a consistent and expandable launch/search schema
- idea would extend the Unity dash without interrupting the current interface
- space for a lot of future Unity dash magic

Cons:
- when typing 'character + space' users could accidentally get into special
launch/search mode
- not average user friendly (maybe a small drop-down search option menu as in

[Bug 662132] [NEW] Resizing of two connecting windows should be easier

2010-10-17 Thread Klau3
Public bug reported:

Nowadays screens become bigger and it is often better to run a program not full
screen e.g. Web browser → some sites will be left bounden other centralized...
Having multiple windows side by side becomes normal so we need a good way to
manage them.

One of the most common actions is to resize windows that they fit
personal working habits (often a program window is bigger - the main
working window).

Thats why I suggest this:
If two windows use all vertical space and they touch each other it should be
possible to resize both windows dragging the mouse cursor between them to the
left or the right.
