[Bug 880071] [NEW] Can't install/use/boot 11.04 or 11.10
Public bug reported: System: Ubuntu 11.10 64-Bit up-to-date Motherboard: ASUS M4A89GTD PRO/USB3 Graphic Card: Sapphire Radeon HD5450 Processor: AMD Phenom II X4 970 Black RAM: Kingston KVR133D3N9 2x 4 GB BIOS version 7.4.05: Standard Settings using IDE (default) Be warned, this is a long one. What you expected to happen: The goal was to install Ubuntu 11.10 on my dads PC using a 64-Bit USB drive. What happened instead: Start conditions - Installed Ubuntu 10.10 64-Bit After booting to the USB drive and selecting the language the problems began. Selecting one of the following menu items resulted always in a frozen system: 'Try without installing', 'Install', 'Check installation medium'. We downloaded new iso's and tried again using normal or alternate CD/USB drives with the same result. All we could see was an blinking cursor in the upper left corner after hitting enter on one of the menu items. After googling without success = http://askubuntu.com/questions/70655 /cant-see-installation-main-screen His PC was still running 10.10 because we had the same problems when trying to installing 11.04 a half year ago. So next thought was, okay lets boot to 10.10 and do an update using the graphical update-manager. It was possible to install 11.04. First boot stocked (system friezed again), but I managed after a couple of reboots using the recovery mode and selecting an older Kernel (2.6.35-30-generic) to boot into 11.04 and having a graphical shell. After installing all updates and a reboot I started again the graphical update-manager to install 11.10 - it worked so fare - installation was successful (no errors). After installing 11.10 I was able to boot normally + Internet was working. This was the time I started 'ubuntu-bug ubuntu-desktop --save 10-22-2011-bug.apport', 'fdisk -l' and 'lshw' all added to this report. After shutting down the PC and booting again (~10 times) I was only able to boot one time to an graphical shell → no Internet connection that time. Every time I tried to boot regardless if I booted using the recovery mode or the normal mode the system friezed on different stages. Image 1 - don't know any more Image 2 - 2.6.35-30-generic recovery mode Image 3 - 3.0.0-12-generic recovery mode Image 4 - 2.6.35 normal I hope my description and the appended files might be of some use. [Bug 879627] [NEW] Brasero crashes the hole system – simple reboot - pc still broken
Public bug reported: Oneiric 64-Bit up-to-date Unity 3D Brasero 3.2.0 What you expected to happen: Burning an iso should work flawless. What happened instead: START - Select and start iso image burning using a blank new CD. - Firefox freezes and systems feels like it is under heavy load ~30 sec → 'System monitor' says low cup usage MIDTERM - Brasero seems to work correct for 1 minute. Firefox is no longer friezed. END - Brasero says that 'burning was successful', but the mouse wheel icon is still turning and the disk not ejected. I wait ~1 min. - Firefox freezes again. I try to open a terminal using a shortcut - doesn't work. - I try to open a terminal using the Dash - Dash opens, I can search and click → doesn't work. It's still possible to click on windows and get them focused - but it isn't longer possible to really interact with the computer. - I try 'CTRL+ALT+F1'. After login I get immediately this message: [25612.493259] end_request: I/O error, dev sda, sector 67385240 - Can't write only the error message is displayed. - I try other virtual terminals with the same result. - I do a hard reboot using the hardware key on the computer. Next shock - it doesn't boot, new error message: DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT DISK AND PRESS ENTER - I pressed the power button of the computer longer to shut it down. After a view seconds I booted again - everything is fine. This isn't the first time I have problems with Brasero. Every new Ubuntu iteration I'll give it a try and it never worked for me. Brasero doesn't work either with my old Pentium 4. Thats why I use K3B most of the time - KDE interface but it works. I suggest CTRL+SHIFT+F or M to creat a new blank file (M, because it is next to N and has no affinity with CTRL+F). ** Affects: nautilus (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/821891 Title: Nautilus shortcut for new blank file To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/821891/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 820262] [NEW] Alt+left/right navigation doesn't work

[Bug 580295] Re: Unity: Alt-F2 not working
I have an idea on how to solve this problem from an UI and usability point of view: Chromium has this neat 'quick search' feature that enables the user to search a specific topic by typing 'keyword' + 'space' + 'search input'. The same could be done with Unity dash, e.g. type 'l update-manager' ('l' for 'launch') to run 'update-manage' as when you pressed Alt-F2 in the old days. To get a better idea of what I mean, look at the mock-up. Implementing this kind of keyword search would open the door to a lot of other exiting search features like: - 'w' for Wikipedia search - 's' normal Internet search - documentation search for a special topic like 'p' for python - user specified keyword' to run - user specified launch/search script → hello Zeitgeist :) - and many more... A similar type of 'specified search terminology' is already used by Firefox, Chrome and DuckDuckGo in form of '!Bang' keywords. As the Alt-F2 feature is used mostly by advanced users, I think previous Alt-F2 users would quickly adopt the new procedure. Pros: - a consistent and expandable launch/search schema - idea would extend the Unity dash without interrupting the current interface - space for a lot of future Unity dash magic Cons: - when typing 'character + space' users could accidentally get into special launch/search mode - not average user friendly (maybe a small drop-down search option menu as in Firefox could help out) ** Attachment added: Mock-up - Unity Dash Magic https://bugs.launchpad.net/unity/+bug/580295/+attachment/1868795/+files/Unity%20Dash%20Magic%20-%20An%20Idea.png -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/580295 Title: Unity: Alt-F2 not working -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 662132] [NEW] Resizing of two connecting windows should be easier
Public bug reported: Nowadays screens become bigger and it is often better to run a program not full screen e.g. Web browser → some sites will be left bounden other centralized... Having multiple windows side by side becomes normal so we need a good way to manage them. One of the most common actions is to resize windows that they fit personal working habits (often a program window is bigger - the main working window). Thats why I suggest this: If two windows use all vertical space and they touch each other it should be possible to resize both windows dragging the mouse cursor between them to the left or the right. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: Invalid -- Resizing of two connecting windows should be easier https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/662132 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
