[Bug 1023155] Re: Chrome+Pepper+Flash plays audio+video in fast-forward after several days of uptime; killall pulseaudio fixes it.

[Bug 1023155] [NEW] Chrome+Pepper+Flash plays audio+video in fast-forward after several days of uptime; killall pulseaudio fixes it.
Public bug reported: Chrome plays audio+video in fast forward when using the Pepper version of Shockwave Flash 11.3 r31 running on Ubuntu Precise Pangolin x86_64. This is particularly obvious when using Pandora or YouTube. I initially believed this to be a Chrome+Pepper+Shockwave issue and reported it to Google. The problem went away after a reboot, but returned a couple of days later. I started looking to see if I could kill the Chrome thread that contained the errant instance of Flash, but I noticed that pulseaudio was using more CPU than expected. On a whim, I killall'ed pulseaudio, hit the reload button in my Pandora window, and the audio started playing normally again. This workaround (killing pulseaudio) suggests that the fix for this issue could lie within pulseaudio. The annoying thing is that this bug takes several days to manifest itself, so it's hard to verify a fix. Also, I'm running Ubuntu on a laptop that moves between my office and home daily, so the problem could be even more subtle than it appears. In any case, I hope that this can help narrow down the issue. [Bug 918252] [NEW] Weird window-manager behavior when running stacked monitors
Public bug reported: I'm running a pair of stacked monitors, with a larger (2048x1152) display above, and a smaller (1366x768 laptop panel) below. The laptop panel is set as the primary display. When placing windows on the top (larger) monitor, window-placement is restricted. I can only place the window in certain regions of the screen. I haven't completely figured out the rules, but it seems as if the window-placement restrictions are dictated by the position of the lower monitor relative to the top monitor in the Display Settings. If I place the lower display in the center of the upper monitor, I can place windows on either side of the upper display. I can, however, resize the windows so that they cover most of the screen. Also, when I open a new window, it's often placed into a narrow vertical strip at the side of one of the display. My guess is that the window manager used by Gnome 3.2 isn't taking in to account the vertical configuration of the displays incorrectly when it's trying to figure out how where it can and can't place windows. [Bug 832483] Re: Toshiba R835-P56X - screen brightness control does not work after suspend/resume
I've tried that in the past with no success. It's worth noting that toshset uses a different kernel module than the Ubuntu installer sets up by default. By default, I have the toshiba_acpi.ki module loaded. I've built and installed the correct module for toshset, but it didn't seem to work any better. And I'm hazy enough on how to the low-level acpi kernel parts work together that I wasn't sure if there was some conflict -- there sure are a lot of files throughout /sys and /proc that seem to control the screen brightness before the sleep/resume cycle that fail after the sleep/resume cycle. From reading the webpage from the author of toshset (http://schwieters.org/toshset/), I'm left with the distinct impression that it was obsolete long before my Toshiba R835-P56x was on the drawing board. Also, upgrading my R835-P56x to version 3.5 of the system BIOS didn't have any effect. I'd love to delve in to the kernel and fix this myself (I'm programming literate and I've touched read/modified kernel code before), but I can't find the right background reading that describes what I need to know about ACPI in general (the kernel/OS view), Linux's ACPI infrastructure, and Toshiba's ACPI. If someone could point me to the right direction, I'd be happy to give it a go and contribute any code that I come up with. Alas, I don't know where to start and I'm a busy guy so I can't just stare at it until it works, the way I could back when I was a student with nothing but time. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/832483 Title: Toshiba R835-P56X - screen brightness control does not work after suspend/resume To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/832483/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 905418] [NEW] When my laptop comes back from sleep, I have to press Ctrl+Alt+F1, Ctrl+Alt+F7 to see the password screen
Public bug reported: When my laptop comes back from sleep, I see a blank screen. I have to press Ctrl+Alt+F1, Ctrl+Alt+F7 to see the password screen. I'm using Gnome 3.2. The problem has been there for some time, and recently got worse after a BIOS update, but I saw this problem intermittently before. I also sometimes see this problem when I'm attached to multiple monitors. I'm not sure if this is a Gnome problem, an Xorg problem, or a problem with my laptop's BIOS. I'll be happy to provide any debugging information that I can. I'm also systems and programming-literate, but not familiar with how Gnome 3.2 is put together under the hood. [Bug 743198] Re: You have no chance to survive make your time error
I'm a Pandora One subscriber, and I e-mailed supp...@pandora.com about this issue. I went on at some length about how I really like both Pandora and Pithos and how I hope that they'd collaborate on a fix. The Pandora support person said that they'd go over the issue with the product team, though my guess they were probably mostly concerned with the text of the message that was displayed on a customer's screen. Pandora seems to be quite responsive to customer-service inquiries, especially from Pandora One subscribers. I imagine that if all of the paying subscribers who have been affected by this issue were to contact supp...@pandora.com and tell them how much they like their 3rd party clients on Linux, Pandora might be encouraged to collaborate with the Open Source community on a fix. As an advertising-supported service, I do understand why they might want to ban 3rd party clients for non-paying customers. But there's every reason why it's in Pandora's interest to let paying customers use the 3rd party client of their choice. And Pithos is my preferred way to access the streaming content that I paid for from Pandora. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/743198 Title: You have no chance to survive make your time error To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/pithos/+bug/743198/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 743198] Re: You have no chance to survive make your time error
I fully understand that this is a reverse engineered client, and I've been using reverse engineered open source software on my primary desktop since 1998. I know the drill, but I do thank you pointing this out for those who haven't been through it over and over again for the past 13 years or so. But the question remains: Why make implementing a 3rd party client more difficult than it needs to be? If a bunch of paying customers invite Pandora to play ball with the Open Source community, maybe they'll show up? In my interactions with their support folks, they've been universally human and easy to deal with. Even if they eventually decline, an invitation (made through several dozen paying customers) probably wouldn't fall on deaf ears.

I really don't think it's a good idea to be contacting Pandora about these issues. [Bug 880236] Re: lastfm fingerprint forgets lastfm credentials if song cannot be identified
One thing related to the behavior that both of us have observed is that more feedback from the last.fm fingerprint plugin would be appreciated. [Bug 839548] Re: Dual monitor Unity workspace switcher bug
The new Unity switcher in Oneiric solves this one very nicely. I haven't experienced the bug since this new version of Gnome was introduced into the Oneric 2-3 weeks ago (when it was still in beta). This is the unity variant where that revolves around a dashboard showing the all of the running windows, the favorites, a way to explore applications, a system-wide search-bar, and a list virtual desktops along the right side. The dashboard can be accessed by pushing the meta key, moving the mouse to the upper left-hand corner, or clicking on the word Activities. I'm a big fan of the new GUI. Instead of being an 90%-as-good copy of the Mac OS X Dock, this is something new that is one of the few modern GUIs that seems intuitive for both both novice and experienced users, and works in harmony with all of the traditional X-Windows applications. In other words, this bug no longer affects me. I reported it earlier in the Oneiric beta. [Bug 874304] [NEW] Unity/Compiz multi-monitor and Virtual Desktop Gotchas
Public bug reported: First off, let me say I love the new Unity/Gnome interface. The interaction with the switcher is first-rate, and the way the virtual desktops are integrated is first rate! And it's one of the few interfaces that I've seen that seems to serve novice users and expert users well, and one of the interfaces for virtual desktop systems that I've used. I love it! Great job! It seems to work almost perfectly on my laptop without an external monitor attached. I have a laptop with an external display attached. The external display is higher resolution, and is physically located above the laptop. The new Unity interface works better than the old Unity interface in the multi-monitor configuration, but I have noticed a few weirdnesses: 1. Virtual Desktops only apply to the primary display. At first glance it seems like the virtual desktops system is incompletely implemented, but I actually find switching virtual desktops on only one monitor to be fairly useful -- so I'd love it if each monitor could be on different virtual desktops so that I can mix and match. The new Unity interface is one of the few interfaces that can actually handle this without being hard to use. 2. When I don't have a monitor attached, and have a bunch of windows sorted according to desktops on my laptop display, all of the windows are dumped into a single workspace when I plug in the external (marked as primary) monitor. 3. I set the external (top) display to be the primary display (with the menu bar) when I'm connected to the monitor, since it makes more sense to have the menu bar (and the Activities hot corner) at the top of my desktop-area. 4. There's a Nautilus menu bar at the top of my bottom screen. If you have to put something there, it's a good choice but, since my monitors are stacked vertically, I don't feel like you have to have something there. 5. When I had the smaller laptop display as the primary display, I had trouble moving windows -- there was some sort of hidden grid. Anyway, many thanks for the great great work! [Bug 867806] Re: df -h permission denied error
This is how Unix systems are supposed to behave. The ~lightdm/.gvfs filesystem is a private FUSE-mounted filesystem that belongs to the lightdm user, so a normal user shouldn't be able to access it. The same thing would happen if you had a GVFS filesystem open as yourself and another user (who was were logged in to the machine via ssh of via the switch-user feature) ran df -h. I certainly see why this text being dumped to stderr on a common command like df -h feels like an error, though. This behavior runs deep into the design of the Linux (and all Unix) kernel, but I'd be interested in any ideas you have about how to modify the behavior to be more suitable. ** Changed in: bash (Ubuntu) Status: New = Opinion -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/867806 Title: df -h permission denied error To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/bash/+bug/867806/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 838857] Re: Unity window manager places Gnome Terminal in odd places on vertical monitor arrangement
I'm still experiencing this problem, after my upgrade to Oneiric beta. The windows are placed under the middle indicator-bar, and scrunched up. This also happens when I do a compiz --replace and it tries to re- arrange the windows. Gnome-terminals seem to be especially susceptible to this, and they sometimes become un-resizeable when I scoot them to the lower monitor and try to resize them. Changing Compiz's Window Placement method away from Smart seems to help. The unresizable gnome-terminal issue seems to be improved after today's Compiz update, but I'll have to wait for a reboot (mostly to reset my mental model of my computer) to see it's entirely fixed. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/838857 Title: Unity window manager places Gnome Terminal in odd places on vertical monitor arrangement To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bug/838857/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 832483] Re: Toshiba R835-P56X - screen brightness control does not work after suspend/resume
I started reading drivers/platform/x86/toshiba_acpi.c to see if any obvious problems jump out at me. (None so far.) However, one strange thing that I noticed is that, while I can adjust my screen brightness by echoing values to /sys/devices/platform/toshiba_acpi/backlight/toshiba/brightness (when I can adjust the brightness at all), rmmoding toshiba_acpi doesn't have any effect on the operation of the brightness buttons, or on the other brightness files in /sys (/sys/devices/pci:00/:00:02.0/drm/card0/card0-LVDS-1/intel_backlight/brightness, /sys/devices/pci:00/:00:02.0/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness, /sys/devices/pci:00/:00:1c.0/:01:00.0/leds/mmc0::/brightness, /sys/devices/pci:00/:00:1c.2/:04:00.0/leds/phy0-led/brightness) Since I can't control the brightness through any of the /sys/*/brightness files after a suspend/resume, I've decided to focus on the kernel side of things and most-ignore the GUI -- the problem must be with this system. But, since the toshiba_acpi module seems to be simultaneously involved and not involved, in setting the brightness, it's clear that I really don't understand how all of the ACPI and other firmware/chipset modules that can control the brightness interact. Can anyone point me to documentation about how this is supposed to work? [Bug 839548] Re: Dual monitor Unity workspace switcher bug
Omer Akram and David Barth: I submitted the duplicate bug. I can confirm that no special steps are required to get the behavior shown in my screenshot, or in nevergone's screenshot. Nevergone's screenshot shows that the bug isn't related to the stacked monitor configuration that I was using. A similarity between our configurations, though, is that the both of our display-configurations feature monitors of mismatched sizes. The steps as I used are: 1. Plug in external monitor to laptop 2. Go to Display-control app, and arrange the monitors to match my physical setup. 3. Press the workspace picker button. 4. Look at artifacts. Take screenshot. I'll be happy to perform any additional troubleshooting steps, or test partial fixes. I'm programming-literate, and an experienced Linux/Unix user. [Bug 857820] [NEW] Virtual Desktop Picker on stacked/mismatched monitors (screenshot)
Public bug reported: The virtual desktop picker provided by Compiz/Unity does not clean up animation-artifacts when used on a stacked monitor configuration with mismatched display sizes (laptop panel below, large secondary external LCD panel above). I've attached a screenshot demonstrating the issue. It looks like the blank areas of the screen aren't being cleared on the top monitor. Also, while mirror images of the picker are shown on both the top and bottom monitor, only the bottom picker is interactive. I can click on the top part, but the it has no effect. A quick fix might be to prevent the picker from writing any output to the top display? I defer to someone who knows the codebase on that one, but the bottom display (the primary LCD) does seem to be behaving more- or-less as it should. [Bug 842745] Re: Stacked Monitors: missing screen area when lower (low res) monitor is centered under high-res monitor
I'm seeing the same dock behavior on Oneiric. It had been masked to me, because I had set the dock to always be visible. After I rm'd my compiz-related dot files, I see the same problem with unhiding the dock. There are a number of problems with the stacked monitor configuration and Unity/compiz. Before blanking my compiz dot files, Compiz was regularly placing windows over the split between the windows, but I haven't captured a video or characterized enough of it to submit a helpful big report. Also, window pickers seem to display all of the windows upside down on the split (I've filed a separate bug report with a screenshot about this one). Also, Compiz crashes regularly in this configuration -- it's getting better, and I've been trying to gather enough information to characterize it in a helpful way. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/842745 Title: Stacked Monitors: missing screen area when lower (low res) monitor is centered under high-res monitor To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/unity/+bug/842745/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 855613] [NEW] Choosing windows with vertically-stacked monitors
Public bug reported: When running Unity with stacked monitors (laptop display on the bottom, external monitor above), the window-picker sometimes clusters the available-windows directly over the split between the two monitors. I've observed this happen when I use the meta-W key to pick windows as well, so this is presumably a Compiz bug? Does Compiz provide the picker that lets you pick between the windows in an application? My description is a little bit vague, since I'm new to Unity and I'm not quire sure where Compiz ends and Unity begins. I have, however, attached a screenshot showing the problem. Hitting print screen brought the System Settings window, so I'd like to direct your attention away from that window, and toward the upside-down (and unpickable) windows near the middle of the screenshot. To reproduce: 1. Run Unity in a configuration with a large monitor on the top, and a smaller monitor on the bottom. 2. Open an application that uses multiple windows, such as Chrome or Thunderbird and open several windows. 3. Click on the application's icon in the dock. 4. Observe the windows floating in the least pickable place on the desktop (right between the two screens, and underneath the indicator applet). 5. Try to pick a window. Windows may be unpickable. I've been trying to figure out if I should call this one intermittent. It doesn't happen all of the time but, I can't remember if it's intermittent and starts happening after a few minutes of uptime, or if it's changed with a recent update. In any case, it's happening pretty consistently now. BTW, I'm really enjoying running this beta and being a peripheral part of this process! [Bug 852233] [NEW] Wishlist: smooth scrolling extension as part of the Ubuntu Chromium packages
Public bug reported: Wishlist: smooth scrolling extension as a standard part of the Ubuntu Chromium packages. I just installed the Chromium Wheel Smooth Scroller extension, and I've found that it's a major improvement in both the usability and the feel of the Chromium browser. Previously, I kept scrolling past forum posts and missing things. I thought it was my trackpad, but the smooth scroll extension that I installed makes it a lot easier to track the content visually, and also allows me to set the scroll-rate to my liking. These are a bigger improvement to usability than I had previously thought. I'd love to see a smooth-scrolling extension as part of the standard Ubuntu-Chromium package set, with a set of carefully set defaults. The Chromium Wheel Smooth Scroller extensions has a number of knobs that I can tweak, but no reset to defaults button. There are a number of Chromium smooth scroller extensions out there and I haven't tried them all, so I won't advocate for a particular one -- I just feel that this feature should be part of the Unity-GUI experience in a major web- browser. It really does make Chromium *feel* like the smoothly animated system that Unity is going for, and that seems to be establishing itself as the new GUI-norm. This is a low priority wishlist item. P.S. I used to be skeptical about smooth scrolling. That was before hardware that can handle it became cheap and commonplace. [Bug 850977] [NEW] Sluggish performance in Virtualbox after Natty-Oneiric upgrade
Public bug reported: Sluggish performance in Virtualbox after Natty-Oneiric upgrade. Choppy audio, and poor disk I/O performance. Underlying system as VM extensions enabled in the BIOS. I've experimented with the execute-flag setting in the host's BIOS after some web-searches, but these have no effect. The host has an SSD as main storage. I've observed this with Windows 7 guests, and I haven't done anything performance-sensitive with a non-Windows guest. The VirtualBox Guest Additions appear to be up-to-date, and don't appear to have changed since the version of VirtualBox I was using with Natty. Also, the host was upgraded from Natty to Oneiric via the install CD. This is not a fresh install. The VM guests are just plain sluggish, and much slower than they were before the Oneiric upgrade. Before the upgrade, VM guests were snappy, and audio worked flawlessly. I'll be happy to perform any additional diagnostic steps that you suggest, especially since I haven't been able to isolate a cause for this one. Thanks! There may still be other issues relating to the stacked monitor configuration, but I can align the monitors to reflect the physical configuration of monitors on my desk, and I can see all of the basic GUI elements I'm supposed to, and I can move the mouse-cursor to visible parts of the display (and only visible parts of the display).
[Bug 842745] [NEW] Stacked Monitors: missing screen area when lower (low res) monitor is centered under high-res monitor
Public bug reported: Big dead-zone and missing screen elements (such as the dock) when a 1366x768 display is centered (using the monitor preferences dialog) underneath a 2048x1152 display in a multi-monitor configuration. To reproduce: Use two monitors of mismatched sizes, with the higher- resolution monitor on the top and the primary (and lower resolution) display on the bottom. Open the monitor preferences dialog, and place the higher resolution display on top and put the lower resolution display below, and centered. Observe the missing portions of the GUI and display-area. Workaround: Align the screens in the monitor preferences panel, so that the left sides are flush. Centering the screens (relative to each other), or lining up the right-sides cause the dock to disappear and a portion of the laptop's display to become useless. I've attached a screenshot to illustrate the problem. It looks OK at a glance, so I'd like to direct your attention to the bottom portion -- the dock is missing (presumably off of the left side of the screen), and the indicator-bar is partially obscured by the dead-zone. [Bug 843293] [NEW] Wishlist: Hover-browse when dragging files
Public bug reported: I wish that Nautilus would implement a hover-browse feature, similar to that in Mac OS X. Here's how it works: 1. I start dragging (copy or move) a file or directory 2. I hover the mouse for a predetermined interval (2-5 seconds) over a Place or a folder. 3. Nautilus automatically browses to the folder. Process repeats for any sub-folders that I choose. A Sproing sound is appropriate auditory feedback. 4. I release the mouse button. 5. The copy begins. 6. Nautilus returns to the original path. A system that implements this well: Finder in Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard Alternatives / Workarounds: 1. The Extra Pane in Nautilus. 2. pushd and popd in bash. The existing Nautilus GUI is fully usable with the Extra Pane and/or with Tabs, so this really is just a wishlist request. However, I've been using the Mac OS X GUI a lot lately, and so I'm accustomed to this feature and I like it. It seems like an intuitive way to move files around. Also, if you're sitting there wondering if you should drop a file into a particular folder or Place, revealing its contents seems like just the information you'd need to make the dscision.
