Re: [Bug 405544] Re: Kernel does not recognize blank optical media

2010-09-02 Thread mp

OK, I see.

I was using new/blank DVDs.

Now that I have removed Brasero I can burn DVDs and play DVDs.

I am not able to test it with Maverick at the moment. Drowning in work,
sorry.

mp, I understand the frustration, but this bug is pervasive across
Linux, i.e. affects multiple distros and is not something we can easily
fix. Just do a google search of [sr1] Sense Key : Illegal Request
[current] or [sr1] Add. Sense: Logical block address out of range and
you'll see. It seems that it may even be firmware related, in which
case we can't fix it. Couple of questions:

 1) Can you test this with Maverick? I'm asking because I'm running
maverick on my Thinkpad X301 with a USB connected CD/DVD burner and I
 don't have this error.

 2) Are you using a new, never written to DVD-RW or one that you erased?
I'm asking because that might indicate where we should investigate.

[Bug 405544] Re: Kernel does not recognize blank optical media

I can also confirm that un-installing Brasero and installing GnomeBaker
makes it possible to burn DVDs anyway, as suggested here:

However, the error messages persist..

Same issue for me. Since installing Lucid the error message has
persisted and so far one boot failure (out of a total of 5 so far) has
occurred in a way very similar to what is described here.

went fine, the unit came up with the login after the full install.

However, upon boot the first reboot, the aforementioned message flashes
by very quickly, and then the screen fills with thin, colored vertical
lines. It's not clear of the system is continuing to boot, but it
seems like it just locks up and that's that.

[Bug 478219] Re: libgtk1.2 missing on karmic/lucid

2010-04-29 Thread mp
Related is the removal of XMMS, which the Central Committee of Free
Software - whoever they are - has decided is outdated, despite remaining
one of the best and most simple, yet versatile and very low resource
using players around. However, there is a repo that offers XMMS and its
gtk1.2 dependencies:

I just did this in Lucid Live-CD:

Installed the following packages:
libglib1.2ldbl (1.2.10-19build1)
libgtk1.2 (1.2.10-18.1build2)
libgtk1.2-common (1.2.10-18.1build2)
libmikmod2 (3.1.11-a-6.1)
xmms (1.2.11-1)

... using the Karmic entry here:
http://www.pvv.ntnu.no/~knuta/xmms/

This might also work for other apps - XMMS works in Lucid Live-CD with
all the settings and plugins simply copied from an old system - see
also: http://colonos.wordpress.com/?s=xmms

[Bug 444192] Re: xserver / screen resolution not working

2010-04-13 Thread mp
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected

** Description changed:

When the xserver starts and Gnome loads it comes on without a screen
resolution set and the panels are out of view. By pressing ALT+F2 it is
possible to run gnome-control-center, go to Display where the Laptop
Monitor is greyed out and set to Off, then activate the monitor and
set the resolution to 1280x800, after which the display resolution is
correct, but the panels all jumbled up (see screenshot).

This was also the case with Jaunty Live-CD, which made it impossible to
install right. When logging out or rebooting, the xserver goes all wrong
  again.

There is no shortage of bug reports and questions in discussion fora
  mentioning this.

[Bug 444192] Re: xserver / screen resolution not working

2010-04-13 Thread mp
Just loaded Lucid Beta 2, which cannot boot with standard parameters. It
ends in a screen with no text, some coloured background and a white
square in the middle of the screen. Mouse works, keyboard works, but the
only thing it can do for the user is to go to a console, such as via
CTRL+ALT+F2, where there are many error messages, all referring to the
same thing (which has been a problem since Jaunty for many):

[603.412359] [drm_radeon_fence_wait] *ERROR* fence (f3a55820:
0x00115) 516ms time out

[610.972433] [drm_radeon_fence_wait] *ERROR* last signalled fence

[xxx.yy] [drm_radeon_fence_wait] *ERROR* fence (f3a55820:
0x00115) 516ms time out going to restart GPU

Where xxx.yy indicates that these numbers are different for each
error message

The apport report submitted above is done after booting with:

noacpi
noapic
nolapic

With these parameters Lucid Beta 2 boots ok, but as can be seen in the
attached screenshot there is a strange error in the network-manager icon
in the systray

[Bug 444192] Re: xserver / screen resolution not working

2010-04-13 Thread mp
I cannot test this further, since I need this machine for production, so
cannot install Lucid Beta 2 and for instance try the mainline kernel.

However, there has been so widespread unhappiness since Xorg server 1.6,
which coincided with Jaunty, that this is not a Lucid problem
specifically: it has existed for more than a year now. I guess I am just
stuck with Intrepid or must buy a new computer that is supported in
newer versions of Ubuntu (something reminds me of Wintel here, is this
the new Ubuntel universe?)

Re: [Bug 482735] Re: kernel crashes and reports Fixing recursive fault but reboot is needed

2009-12-30 Thread mp

I tried the disk in other machines and it worked fine. However, no one
seems to care about these things. Since Hardy the bugs have just kept
piling up and the focus seems to on shortening boot times - and leaving
behind those that cannot boot at all. I think we need a new term to
reflect the Ubuntel paradigm - similar to the Wintel paradigm I
thought I had left behind. If your latest Ubuntu doesn't work, just buy
a new machine. Repeat until it works.

It is a worrying trend.

northrup wrote:
I'm having a similar issue, but at boot-time. I'm trying to guide my
mom through booting off an Ubuntu 9.10 LiveCD to repair a Windows
installation on her Gateway laptop (I don't have the specs, sorry), but
she's getting the fixing recursive fault but reboot is needed error
message right after she selects either the Try Ubuntu without making
any changes or the OEM Install options. The install CD was shipped
from Canonical, so I'd hope there aren't any disk errors.

I'll try to get the stop screen word-for-word next time I work with the
computer, but for now, what generally causes this kind of error message?
Is it a hardware issue, or did I get a defective disk after all? I told
my mom to run the Check disk for errors option, but I think she got a
 similar screen...

[Bug 44335] Re: IMAP/POP3+SSL/TLS are disabled

2009-11-04 Thread MP
Shipping this package without builtin ssl support is wrong whatever the reason,
so please:
- try and find a way to accomodate ubuntu rules with the author's opinions and
ship a package with ssl support
- build a package with ssl support and ship it in multiverse
- remove the package entirely from ubuntu repositories and let the users go to
the author homepage to get it

Having this bug still opened after 3 years of arguing is a shame for
both the distributor and the author.

Is not Ubuntu the distribution where things just works?

[Bug 444192] Re: xserver / screen resolution not working

2009-10-29 Thread mp
Meanwhile the final Karmic is out, so I booted that. It does not boot
unless the quiet and splash boot parameters are removed, and
noapic and safe graphics mode are chosen. Then it boots fully and
the desktop looks perfect. Without noapic it stall at Clocksource tsc
unstable...

I have attached /var/log/Xorg.0.log

Will post xorg log from Beta Live-CD is needed.

As soon as I have some spare time I will load the Live-CD and extract a

Do you prefer this from a Jaunty Live-CD or a Karmic Beta Live-CD

[Bug 444192] Re: xserver / screen resolution not working

2009-10-06 Thread mp
The exact same behaviour - a non-working Xserver - can be reproduced
with a Jaunty Live-CD. With support for not-so-very-old cards dropped in
binary driver by ATI and the open-source not working, many users are
trapped in Intrepid.

[Bug 444192] [NEW] xserver / screen resolution not working

2009-10-05 Thread mp
Public bug reported:

For what concerns:
01:05.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RC410 [Radeon Xpress
200M] only up to Intrepid works.

[Bug 444192] Re: xserver / screen resolution not working

2009-10-05 Thread mp
Here is a screenshot of the Desktop and the panels jumbled up after
setting the resolution. NB: resetting the panels is not the problem
here, the problem is that the resolution goes wrong again (after reboot)
and that the xserver simply does not work. Pressing CTRL+ALT+F1 (to F6)
does not give a console, just a blinking cursor on a black screen.

[Bug 437429] Re: Cannot prevent login sound

2009-10-01 Thread MP
@Harry: This is most certainly a bug. A necessary and working function
has been removed. This is a problem that is prevalent in the Linux
community. Distros remove perfectly functioning programs and replace
them with broken and insufficient replacements coupled with promises
that the replacement will one day be just functional and stable as the
prior working program. Regardless of the reasons for such actions, the
result is that the end-users suffer.

2009-09-12 Thread MP
Public bug reported:

I have my location configured in the clock with weather turned on.
Sometimes when I log in, I am not connected to a network, such as when I
must authenticate on wireless networks. When this happens, the weather
does not load in the clock.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Enable your location and weather display in the clock.
2. Log out.
3. Disable your network connection (firewall, unplug cable, etc)
4. Log into Ubuntu
5. The weather will not be displayed. This is expected.
6. Connect to your network.

Result:
The weather never displays. There is no way to refresh the weather and make it
display.

Expected result:
The weather should load once the network is accessible or a refresh function
item should be available.

** Affects: gnome-panel (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided

[Bug 346386] Re: Updater won't run - Encountered a section with no Package: header

2009-06-17 Thread mp
I confirm this bug. It started today.
2.6.28-11-generic #42-Ubuntu SMP Fri Apr 17 01:57:59 UTC 2009 i686 GNU/Linux

All updates done. Proposed NOT enabled.

It prevents Synaptic and Update-Manager GUIs to run. They shut down upon
encountering the error.

From terminal it looks like this:

$ sudo aptitude update
E: Encountered a section with no Package: header
E: Problem with MergeList
/var/lib/apt/lists/ftp.heanet.ie_pub_ubuntu_dists_jaunty-updates_main_binary-i386_Packages

E: Encountered a section with no Package: header
E: Problem with MergeList
/var/lib/apt/lists/ftp.heanet.ie_pub_ubuntu_dists_jaunty-updates_main_binary-i386_Packages
E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.

apt-get returns the same
Update Manager returns more or less the same in the GUI:

'E:Encountered a section with no Package: header, E:Problem with
MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/ftp.heanet.ie_pub_ubuntu_dists_jaunty-
updates_main_binary-i386_Packages, E:The package lists or status file
could not be parsed or opened.'

It is a duplicate of https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/358012 reported in
Synaptic. And it is not repository specific as suggested in some places.

It is an old bug it seems, fixed in 2003, that has come back:
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=195301 - where it says:
This bug was fixed in 0.8.5 with the help of Matt Zimmermann.

Following these instructions works for some (from
http://oclug.on.ca/archives/linux/2007-February/001056.html):

cd /var/lib/dpkg
sudo mv status status-bad
sudo cp status-old status

sudo apt-get update
apt-get upgrade

For others this was also needed:
sudo rm -f /var/lib/dpkg/lock

While for the rest of us nothing seems to work so far!

In other words: CONFIRMED

[Bug 346386] Re: Updater won't run - Encountered a section with no Package: header

2009-06-17 Thread mp

The solution above fixes the problem for me:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/update-manager/+bug/370294/comments/1

For someone not used to command line operations, from the terminal just
do:

gksu nautilus (it will ask for your pwd)

Then navigate to /var/lib/apt/lists

Choose: View -- List
(can also be done via CTRL+2)

and then click on Type in the Nautilus interface in order to get
all files of the same kind to line up with each other.

Mark/highlight all the files of the type HTML and delete them. (I
actually copied them to another folder just in case they were needed,
but they once they are gone all is fine (for me)).

Finally:

sudo aptitude update (or run your usual GUI).
sudo aptitude dist-upgrade

[Bug 342324] Re: [jaunty][alpha6]X-Server restart randomly

There is a lot of related reports - recent comments on this
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/355155 appears to be very similar. There
are severe problems with xserver 1.6

But nothing is apparently done to fix it - not even a recognition or
acknowledgement!?!?!?

Many people are switching away from Jaunty, because it is plainly
unusable for a lot of people.

CTRL+ALT+backspace, etc.), suggests to me that the problem I (and
alcCapone, and others) are experiencing is a problem with the new X
 server (1.6.0).

I tend to agree. I had big problems with X during installation. Live-CD
only worked in Safe Graphics Mode (SGM), so I had to install from
there and then again boot into SGM and edit the X11/xorg.conf file to
use the Open Source ATI driver (Xpress 200M), then reboot. But that
still didn't solve the problem. The window management was still wrong,
no panels, no buttons, no nothing. So with ALT+F2 I called up
gnonme-system-settings and looked at display options. It appeared that
NO screen was defined, it was greyed out. So I clicked on it and set the
resolution, rebooted and I finally had a desktop. I also cannot log out
(only reboot), if I log out the screen just blinks for a while and then
logs back in again. There are clearly problems with the X server.

Jaunty is a pile of shit for me so far. And there seems to be very few
new updates coming? Has Canonical gone bankrupt? Are they still
working? Where are they? Who are they? What is Ubuntu? And does it have
a future?

I would like to add to the last comment. I had two days without freezes,
coincidently after the compiz-updates. I started to rebuild trust to

Vista does not work anymore, the laptop is completely useless for me. I
experience freezes within two or three minutes after booting.

I am pretty sure that I can blame the wireless network connection for
the freezes. As soon as I switch the radio of, the system is stable. I
will test the network with a wired connection later today.

I don't use WIFI and have the hardware button in OFF.

Still experience freezes.

Agree with previous comment: some acknowledgement would be
nice/comforting.

Jaunty is the worst Ubuntu experience for me since Hoary and there also
seems to be very few updates so far, compared to other releases?!?!?
Should we begin to understand non-LTS releases as Alphas and Betas for LTSs?

That sounds good. Any feedback from users that is relevant to consider?

Such as: How stable is it?

Any issues at all?

Just working?

Working for some?

Yes, Blueman is definitely the answer in Jaunty.

All things seem to work for me - browsing, transferring files to phone
and also Wamma/Gammu phone access works when paired by Blueman.

Using Jaunty with Blueman from the PPA - browsing, copying, pasting etc.
on a phone via Nautilus works just fine!

No more Operation not supported by backend. Just works.

It did not work in Intrepid w/Blueman PPA.

undecided (decidedly important to me) and unassigned (I am not able to
 fix it myself!)

Ah well, mine doesn't work either - unless I apply my _kernel_ patch
which reverts _net/bluetooth_ back to the 2.6.24 Hardy kernel's
protocol stack. (Patch posted earlier to this long bug report).

The latest kernel fixes to make the USB Bluetooth driver better don't
make any difference on my system. Neither does running older Bluez
code. I see a protocol bug in the kernel. Fortunately for me, I have
a workaround, but unfortunately it's not suitable for general use as
it reverts the entire kernel bluetooth stack quite a long way.
