Re: [Bug 405544] Re: Kernel does not recognize blank optical media
OK, I see. I was using new/blank DVDs. Now that I have removed Brasero I can burn DVDs and play DVDs. I am not able to test it with Maverick at the moment. Drowning in work, sorry. On 02/09/10 16:40, Robbie Williamson wrote: mp, I understand the frustration, but this bug is pervasive across Linux, i.e. affects multiple distros and is not something we can easily fix. Just do a google search of [sr1] Sense Key : Illegal Request [current] or [sr1] Add. Sense: Logical block address out of range and you'll see. It seems that it may even be firmware related, in which case we can't fix it. Couple of questions: 1) Can you test this with Maverick? I'm asking because I'm running maverick on my Thinkpad X301 with a USB connected CD/DVD burner and I don't have this error. 2) Are you using a new, never written to DVD-RW or one that you erased? I'm asking because that might indicate where we should investigate. -- Kernel does not recognize blank optical media https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/405544 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Related is the removal of XMMS, which the Central Committee of Free Software - whoever they are - has decided is outdated, despite remaining one of the best and most simple, yet versatile and very low resource using players around. However, there is a repo that offers XMMS and its gtk1.2 dependencies: I just did this in Lucid Live-CD: Installed the following packages: libglib1.2ldbl (1.2.10-19build1) libgtk1.2 (1.2.10-18.1build2) libgtk1.2-common (1.2.10-18.1build2) libmikmod2 (3.1.11-a-6.1) xmms (1.2.11-1) ... using the Karmic entry here: http://www.pvv.ntnu.no/~knuta/xmms/ This might also work for other apps - XMMS works in Lucid Live-CD with all the settings and plugins simply copied from an old system - see also: http://colonos.wordpress.com/?s=xmms -- libgtk1.2 missing on karmic/lucid https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/478219 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 444192] Re: xserver / screen resolution not working
Just loaded Lucid Beta 2, which cannot boot with standard parameters. It ends in a screen with no text, some coloured background and a white square in the middle of the screen. Mouse works, keyboard works, but the only thing it can do for the user is to go to a console, such as via CTRL+ALT+F2, where there are many error messages, all referring to the same thing (which has been a problem since Jaunty for many): [603.412359] [drm_radeon_fence_wait] *ERROR* fence (f3a55820: 0x00115) 516ms time out [610.972433] [drm_radeon_fence_wait] *ERROR* last signalled fence [xxx.yy] [drm_radeon_fence_wait] *ERROR* fence (f3a55820: 0x00115) 516ms time out going to restart GPU Where xxx.yy indicates that these numbers are different for each error message The apport report submitted above is done after booting with: noacpi noapic nolapic With these parameters Lucid Beta 2 boots ok, but as can be seen in the attached screenshot there is a strange error in the network-manager icon in the systray ** Attachment added: screenshot - to show faulty nm icon http://launchpadlibrarian.net/44045205/Screenshot.png -- xserver / screen resolution not working https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/444192 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 444192] Re: xserver / screen resolution not working
I cannot test this further, since I need this machine for production, so cannot install Lucid Beta 2 and for instance try the mainline kernel. However, there has been so widespread unhappiness since Xorg server 1.6, which coincided with Jaunty, that this is not a Lucid problem specifically: it has existed for more than a year now. I guess I am just stuck with Intrepid or must buy a new computer that is supported in newer versions of Ubuntu (something reminds me of Wintel here, is this the new Ubuntel universe?) -- xserver / screen resolution not working https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/444192 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Re: [Bug 482735] Re: kernel crashes and reports Fixing recursive fault but reboot is needed
I tried the disk in other machines and it worked fine. However, no one seems to care about these things. Since Hardy the bugs have just kept piling up and the focus seems to on shortening boot times - and leaving behind those that cannot boot at all. I think we need a new term to reflect the Ubuntel paradigm - similar to the Wintel paradigm I thought I had left behind. If your latest Ubuntu doesn't work, just buy a new machine. Repeat until it works. It is a worrying trend. northrup wrote: I'm having a similar issue, but at boot-time. I'm trying to guide my mom through booting off an Ubuntu 9.10 LiveCD to repair a Windows installation on her Gateway laptop (I don't have the specs, sorry), but she's getting the fixing recursive fault but reboot is needed error message right after she selects either the Try Ubuntu without making any changes or the OEM Install options. The install CD was shipped from Canonical, so I'd hope there aren't any disk errors. I'll try to get the stop screen word-for-word next time I work with the computer, but for now, what generally causes this kind of error message? Is it a hardware issue, or did I get a defective disk after all? I confirm this bug. It started today. 2.6.28-11-generic #42-Ubuntu SMP Fri Apr 17 01:57:59 UTC 2009 i686 GNU/Linux All updates done. Proposed NOT enabled. It prevents Synaptic and Update-Manager GUIs to run. They shut down upon encountering the error. From terminal it looks like this: $ sudo aptitude update E: Encountered a section with no Package: header E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/ftp.heanet.ie_pub_ubuntu_dists_jaunty-updates_main_binary-i386_Packages E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened. It is a duplicate of https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/358012 reported in Synaptic. And it is not repository specific as suggested in some places. It is an old bug it seems, fixed in 2003, that has come back: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=195301 - where it says: This bug was fixed in 0.8.5 with the help of Matt Zimmermann. The solution above fixes the problem for me: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/update-manager/+bug/370294/comments/1 For someone not used to command line operations, from the terminal just do: gksu nautilus (it will ask for your pwd) Then navigate to /var/lib/apt/lists Choose: View -- List (can also be done via CTRL+2) and then click on Type in the Nautilus interface in order to get all files of the same kind to line up with each other. Mark/highlight all the files of the type HTML and delete them. (I actually copied them to another folder just in case they were needed, but they once they are gone all is fine (for me)). There is a lot of related reports - recent comments on this https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/355155 appears to be very similar. RedSocrates wrote: The fact that (1) this occurs on various kernels and various *buntus, and that (2) the mouse and keyboard remain responsive while commands to the X server receive no response (windows do not respond to clicks, the server doesn't let me move to a tty or restart it with CTRL+ALT+backspace, etc.), suggests to me that the problem I (and alcCapone, and others) are experiencing is a problem with the new X server (1.6.0). I tend to agree. I had big problems with X during installation. Live-CD only worked in Safe Graphics Mode (SGM), so I had to install from there and then again boot into SGM and edit the X11/xorg.conf file to use the Open Source ATI driver (Xpress 200M), then reboot. But that still didn't solve the problem. The window management was still wrong, no panels, no buttons, no nothing. So with ALT+F2 I called up gnonme-system-settings and looked at display options. It appeared that NO screen was defined, it was greyed out. So I clicked on it and set the resolution, rebooted and I finally had a desktop. I also cannot log out (only reboot), if I log out the screen just blinks for a while and then logs back in again. There are clearly problems with the X server. Jaunty is a pile of shit for me so far. And there seems to be very few new updates coming? Has Canonical gone bankrupt? Are they still working? Where are they? Who are they? What is Ubuntu? Using Jaunty with Blueman from the PPA - browsing, copying, pasting etc. on a phone via Nautilus works just fine! No more Operation not supported by backend. Just works. It did not work in Intrepid w/Blueman PPA. Jamie Lokier wrote: Dominique Meeùs wrote: Mine still does not work. This is a regression form 8.04 over two releases 8.10 and 9.04. Ah well, mine doesn't work either - unless I apply my _kernel_ patch which reverts _net/bluetooth_ back to the 2.6.24 Hardy kernel's protocol stack. (Patch posted earlier to this long bug report). The latest kernel fixes to make the USB Bluetooth driver better don't make any difference on my system. Neither does running older Bluez code. I see a protocol bug in the kernel.
