[Bug 619569] Re: some characters display as space or blank

2010-10-24 Thread Matthew Carroll
I'm seeing this issue too, in firefox (I don't use thunderbird). If you
resize the text (CTRL+ / CTRL-) which characters are affected change.

In the attached example (3 screen shots cropped/spliced), original text
size the "u" characters are the problem. One size up, it's n and i
characters (although, interestingly, not all the i's are affected).
Bigger still and the r's go bad.

[Bug 659154] Re: intel video external monitor resolution problem

2010-10-18 Thread Matthew Carroll
I believe I'm seeing this same bug. Mirrored both screens show the full
visable area. Non-mirrored, 1 or both screens show only part of the area
that should be visible. A work-around (although very much not ideal) for
me seems to be to position the laptop screen below the external screen
in the layout. However, it should be to the side (same as the relative
position of the screens on my desk).

This problem (assuming it is the same bug) is discussed here:

[Bug 422893] Re: no gnome panel on second monitor on dual screen setup

2009-11-03 Thread Matthew Carroll
I don't think this is actually a missing feature, just a case of UI
change and poor documentation. To put a panel on the second monitor, add
it to the primary monitor, then hold + click + drag to move it to
the second monitor. This is described in the help, but is far from
intuitive.

My feeling is that there should be a right-click menu option to move the
panel, but this at least works as a work-around.

[Bug 107605] Re: formatting code showing in "allow access" dialogue

2007-04-24 Thread Matthew Carroll
To trigger the dialogue, I compose a new message in thunderbird, and
press send. At this point Enigmail / OpenPGP attempts to sign the
message, for which it needs to pull my pgp passphrase from the keyring,
and so the "Allow access" dialogue appears as shown in the screenshot
above.

Default language (from system -> administration -> language support) is
English (Canada)

It does not occur when the same dialogue appears with nm-applet pulling
the passphrase for my wireless network from the keyring. Screenshot
attached.

Thanks

[Bug 107607] disk mount stores impossible mount point

2007-04-18 Thread Matthew Carroll
Public bug reported:

Hi

If I attempt to create a custom mount point for a removable drive as
follows, and enter the full path I want the drive mounted at (e.g.
"/media/compactflash") this input is accepted, but then the drive canot
be mounted.

As I have discovered, what is required is simply the last part of the
mount point location (e.g. "compactflash" in this case), but this is not
clear from the properties dialogue and no validation is done on the
input.

Steps to reproduce:

1. Insert removable disk
2. Right click on disk icon on desktop, select properties
3. In drive tab, under "Mount Point" add a full directory, e.g.
"/media/compactflash")
4. Click close
5. Right click and eject disk
6. Re-insert disk

Result:

error: "moint_point cannot contain the following characters: newline,
G_DIR_SEPARATOR (usually /)"

Expected behaviour:

properties dialogue should have validated input and rejected invalid
mountpoint

Thanks

[Bug 63050] Re: xinerama broken on upgrade dapper to edgy beta

2007-04-16 Thread Matthew Carroll
Nope, I spoke too soon. For some reason X has a resolution 2px wider
than my laptop's primary display (1368*768), even though the only
resolution listed in xorg.conf is the correct 1366*768. If I change this
in System -> Preferences -> Screen Resolution to 1366*768, the
resolutions of both screens are then correct, but the Xinerama bug
recurs.

Public bug reported:

2. tick 'repeat keys'
3. type in the box

result:

1. for each key pressed, two of each letter appear on key-down, like tthhiiss.
2. when held down continuously, no further letters appear.
3. i'm starting to develop rsi from having to tapping the backspace key
repeatedly any time i want to delete a whole word. dag'nabit.

expected result:

one letter at a time please, unless i hold down the key, in which case a
working repeat would be nice.

this bug is something to do with x or gnome. keyboard repeat works fine

[Bug 51228] Re: windows fail to respect panel boundaries with second screen 'above'

2006-11-01 Thread Matthew Carroll
Hi Daniel

I was using Dapper when I reported the bug, now Edgy. I haven't had
cause to use xinerama with one screen above the other for a while, so I
forgot about this until now.

Unfortunately I cannot test whether the bug is still occurring in Edgy,
since another bug in xinerama is preventing windows being moved between
the two screens and maximized properly:

https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/x11proto-
xinerama/+bug/63050

...once that is fixed I'll test this issue again.

[Bug 63050] xinerama still broken in edgy

2006-11-01 Thread Matthew Carroll
I just upgraded to edgy proper and this bug is still present.

These laptops are quite popular (sony vaio vgn-tx series), and I don't

for me.

OK, I reworked my xorg.conf from scratch starting with the default,
ending with the same setup as I had before. The bug now isn't happening,
even with my dual head setup and the correct resolutions. Here's my new
xorg.conf - some difference between the two is triggering the bug (it
recurs if I swap back in the original).

I'm trying to pin it down by swapping lines from the old config into the
new config one by one, but I haven't yet worked out which is to blame;
perhaps more experienced eyes might be able to spot something?... I'm
stabbing in the dark somewhat. So far: it doesn't seem to be the
modeline, horizsync, vertrefresh or useedidfreqs lines from the original
xorg.conf.

2006-10-11 Thread Matthew Carroll
Hi Joey, you were right - reconfiguring X to default made the problem
dissapear, although I'm feeling rather short of screen real-estate now!
I had a customised X config (widescreen laptop, dual head with external
LCD and xinerama - although xinerama isn't working at the moment, see
#63050).

Also, I did full updates and ran memtest (2 full passes, 0 errors) so no
issue there.

I'll post my old xorg.conf now and then try to work out what the minimum
changes required to trigger the bug is - I suspect it's related to dual
head. OO is still the only app that has ever triggered this.

[Bug 63050] xinerama broken on upgrade dapper to edgy beta

2006-09-29 Thread Matthew Carroll
Public bug reported:

I just upgraded to edgy beta and xinerama is broken. with xinerama
switched off in xorg.conf, both heads work correctly, independently.
with xinerama on, windows on the primary monitor canot be dragged
completely onto the second monitor. i can move the mouse across the
entire range of both screens, and panels added to the second screen
behave as expected (filling all the way across), but windows get stuck
with part of the window remaining on the primary monitor. i can see the
window on the second monitor, but not get it to move all the way across.
it's exactly the same behaviour as happens if you try to move a window
entirely out of the field of view - the window won't entirely move off
the edge of the monitor, but in this case it won't entirely move onto my
second monitor. screenshots aren't showing this so i'll attach a photo.

[Bug 16894] Re: gnome-screenshot fails to work with multiple monitors

2006-06-28 Thread Matthew Carroll
Just to confirm, this is still present in 6.06 LTS (Gnome 2.14.2). I
have added a comment to the upstream bug report. Maybe someone from the
Ubuntu team feels like patching with code from the GIMP? ;-)

[Bug 51228] windows fail to respect panel boundaries with second screen 'above'

2006-06-28 Thread Matthew Carroll
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

I am running a dual screens using Xinerama and the vga output from my
laptop. When I have the second screen set to the right of my laptop's
built in screen, as follows, maximised windows correctly respect the
boundaries of any panels I have on either screen:

Section "ServerLayout"
...
Screen "Second Screen" RightOf "Default Screen"
...
EndSection

However, when I change this to:

Screen "Second Screen" Above "Default Screen"

...any panels at the joining edge of each screen (the top edge of
'Default Screen' and the bottom edge of 'Second Screen') fail to be
respected by maximised / moved windows. maximised windows maximise to
fill the space behind the panel, and moved windows do not experience the
usual resistance effect when passing the panel boundary.

I have posted screenshots of the effect and my xorg.conf here:

http://carroll.org.uk/files/x11-above-bug/

Please email me if you need any more info, and accept my appologies if
this is filed against the wrong package. I suspect it's gnome, but I'm
really not sure what part deals with all that window behaviour.

Good luck
Matthew

[Bug 49483] rhythmbox close button should minimise to tray

2006-06-12 Thread Matthew Carroll
Public bug reported:

i regularly use both gaim and rhythmbox. when i click the 'x' in the top
right of the window to 'close' gaim, it actaully minimises to the system
tray rather than closing the application (which is preferable behaviour,
imho). however when i hit 'x' in rhythmbox it closes the application.
this inconsistency in the user interfaces is confusing (and frustrating
when my currently playing music stops mid-track)... i'm not sure which
behaviour is considered 'correct', but they should be consistent, and
since my preference for rhythmbox is to close the window and keep the
application running in the tray, so i'm filing this here.

thanks
matthew
