The bug affects me, too. I just installed the three above mentioned
mutter packages (libmutter-7-0 mutter mutter-common) and now Chromium is
working again. Thanks for the fix!

[Bug 1407008] Re: Some navigation features broken

2015-01-29 Thread Matthias Jordan
Something that occurred to me today: the navigation is quite fine as
long as the user manages to not place the mouse pointer focus at a bad
place. Example:

In the zoom menu, click on "Fit Page". Click on the document to close the drop
down menu. Ctrl-Home, Ctrl-End are broken.
In the zoom menu, click on "Fit Width", then on the document. Ctrl-Home,
Ctrl-End are broken. Click the document again: Ctrl-Home, Ctrl-End are fine.
Back on "Fit Page". Ctrl-Home, Ctrl-End are broken again.

[Bug 1407008] [NEW] Some navigation features broken

2015-01-01 Thread Matthias Jordan
Public bug reported:

According to the Help provided by Evince, some navigation features are
supposed to work, but don't work.

How to repro: Evince version 3.14.1-0ubuntu1 from Ubuntu 14.10. Open any
PDF file. Then:

Help says: "Click the < or > buttons". These buttons are disabled (see attached
screenshot, that also shows that the second menu's icon is missing).
Help says: "Press Ctrl+Page Up ..." These keys don't work at all.
Help says: "If you want to see the previously visited pages press < or > on the
toolbar.", which is exactly those buttons earlier introduced as "move between
pages" (and which don't work).
Help says: "... go to the beginning ... click the File options menu." This menu
now has a strange little icon with a wrench but not a name anymore. (granted,
this is a Help bug)
Help says: "... go to the beginning ...press Ctrl+Home" This doesn't work.
Neither does Ctrl+End, both of which is really annoying.

[Bug 1292398] Re: multi-monitor : second screen position isn't saved from one session to another

2014-08-15 Thread Matthias Jordan
I tried the workaround proposed by thw-th. It works, but only for the
first login. That means the screen configuration is wrong

- on the login screen (gdm)
- after locking the screen and unlocking it again

With lightdm, the login screen works like a charm but the desktop is
affected by the screen config issue right after logging in, when the
above workaround is not installed.

So, yes, seems like a GNOME issue. Not the only one, I'd like to add.

[Bug 1298666] Re: Preferences option not present in Edit menu

2014-05-09 Thread Matthias Jordan
Okay, this is, of course, not a bug per se but one big fat sign that the
GNOME "usability" people have really been messing things up recently. As
it turns out, there are the usual menus in the gedit window ("File",
"Edit", ...). BUT. Because Apple II only had a screen size of 280×192,
clearly in 2014 you have to have menus in the GNOME Shell top bar to
save screen estate. On a twin 1920x1200 display setup. And to totally
confuse users, some menu items, that used to be in the fricking Edit
menu for like ages, have to move to that GNOME Shell top bar application
menu. Presumably to justify its existence. So, yes, the item is still
there - it just moved to another entirely different menu. I guess we all
have to drink a bit more of that OS X Koolaid to get just how awesome it
is that the menu for application Y on screen 1 is in the Shell title bar
on screen 3 mere 80 centimeters away.

[Bug 1310313] Re: Dual monitor configuration not saved (

2014-04-24 Thread Matthias Jordan
I'm having the same issue, using two monitors, one of which (B) is rotated and
placed at the left of the landscape-oriented main monitor (A).
When the machine starts, the lightdm login screen has B configured to the right
of A and not rotated. After logging in, I use the gnome-control-center to fix
the display settings, which works nicely. After hitting "Apply" and confirming
the new configuration, everything is awesome.
After logging out or rebooting the machine, everything is back in the initial,
unconfigured state.
My graphics driver is xserver-xorg-video-nouveau 1:1.0.10-1ubuntu2. The setup
worked without any error in 13.04.

[Bug 166371] Re: Illustrator CS SVG won't load: namespace URIs in entities

2013-06-24 Thread Matthias Jordan
I seems like the bug reappeared.

I'm using version 0.48.4-0.1ubuntu2 of the package inkscape and tried to
open a bunch of SVGs that start like this:

http://www.w3.org/Graphics/SVG/1.1/DTD/svg11.dtd"; [
http://www.w3.org/2000/svg";>
http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink";>
]>

The complaint is the same as above. If the document element is edited
to read this:

http://www.w3.org/2000/svg";
xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"; ...>

it works. Seemingly the entities are not expanded.

I don't have the source code so I can't fix this myself. But this seems
to be a good candidate for a regression test.

[Bug 931240] Re: Triple head on Ubuntu 11.10 with AMD Radeon HD 6470M not working

2012-12-02 Thread Matthias Jordan
I just got the problem in 12.10 for the first time. I have a dual-screen
setup at a Radeon HD 2600XT (I know). My main screen is horizontal, the
secondary screen is vertical. This setup did work in 12.04. In 12.10 my
GNOME Shell opens with a grey decorationless window on the left (see
attached downscaled screenshot). I can use a context menu to copy the
text in it out and into an editor, which reveals a localized version of
the messages other users get. The fun thing is: the screen setup is 100%
working - resolution, aspect, everything. But I still get the annoying
window - and closing it isn't easy because there are no window
decorations.

[Bug 537970] Re: Evince does not print images in some pdf files.

2012-06-20 Thread Matthias Jordan
Fun fact: after #41, a colleague printed the file Abschlussarbeit.pdf
with Evince 3.2.1 to the same CUPS and hardware printer as above and the
logo did not print. The file does, though, print with gtklp and the CUPS
lpr program. I'll have to wait for another colleague to return from a
business trip so we can try that on another Precise machine.

[Bug 537970] Re: Evince does not print images in some pdf files.

2012-06-20 Thread Matthias Jordan
Now I also lifted our laser printer to my office and printed
Abschlussarbeit directly through the parallel port. You know what? The
logo prints from within Evince.

This indicates that the GNOME print dialog does stuff entirely different
from what lpr and gtklp do with remote CUPS servers. In all former cases
the same (as in "==", not as in .equals()) remote printer hardware was
used. (This was also the very hardware that prints the logo when
attached to the parallel port.)

So that means that Evince in Precise prints just fine to a parallel port
printer but not to a remote CUPS printer while gtklp and lpr print fine
using the same remote CUPS printer that Evince fails to print to.

That lead me to a new hypothesis: the remote CUPS server or one of its
subsystems is buggy; printing from gtklp and lpr works because the
hardware printer, attached to the CUPS server using Ethernet, is
accessed directly from gtklp and lpr while Evince talks to the CUPS
server. An experiment (printing a job using Evince and gtklp) refuted
this: both jobs appeared in the CUPS job queue.

What's also interesting is that the (failing) remote print job from
Evince is listed as 1053k in the Size column in the CUPS jobs list for
that printer while the gtklp job clocks in at 989k.

And the absolute super joke is that after reattaching the darn laser
printer and killing two stale print processes (hung since March) the bug
disappeared and the logo prints correctly out of Evince. This is even
more hilarious if you consider that this wasn't the first time we power-
cycled the printer and the problems began long before March this year.
I'm positive that the PNG printing problem will reappear. Until then I'm
not able to repro this any further.

This leaves me wondering why the heck the document renders correctly on

myself clear here: The document (and every other document that has this

it results in missing images (e.g. the blue logo in

states.

[Bug 537970] Re: Evince does not print images in some pdf files.

2012-05-10 Thread Matthias Jordan
This information is about Evince 3.4.0 from Ubuntu 12.04. I attached a
file that Evince does not print correctly - the image is still missing.
Further, I made some experiments:

0) printing Abschlussarbeit.pdf from Evince to a CUPS printer fails to print
the image
1) "lpr Abschlussarbeit.pdf" prints the file correctly with image, using a
remote CUPS server via IPP
2) printing Abschlussarbeit.pdf from Evince into a file Ausgabe.pdf prints
correctly
3) printing Ausgabe.pdf from Evince fails to print the image (as expected)
4) printing Abschlussarbeit.pdf from Ad*be Reader to the same CUPS printer as
in 0) prints the image correctly.
5) printing Abschlussarbeit.pdf usign gtklp prints the file correctly

Since lpr is the CUPS tool, I doubt it's a problem with CUPS or the
printer driver. Further, both the third party tool and gtklp print the
file correctly, using the same CUPS printer.

[Bug 537970] Re: Evince does not print images in some pdf files.

2011-10-10 Thread Matthias Jordan
Here is a bit more data: The issue is also prevalent with Evince 2.32.0
(from Ubuntu 11.4). An interesting observation might be that the sample
PDF Abschlussarbeit.pdf prints okay to PDF. So when I open the file,
choose /File/Print and print not to our laser printer but to a PDF file,
the image is there.

[Bug 537970] Re: Evince does not print images in some pdf files.

2010-10-19 Thread Matthias Jordan
I just tried to print that document and here, too, the image is missing.
I attached another file (Abschlussarbeit.pdf) that has the same problem:
the image (the blue logo) on page 1 doesn't print - neither with Evince
2.32.0 (from Ubuntu 10.10) nor with Evince 2.30.3 (from Ubuntu 10.4).
Please note that this is by far the only example. At our site it is more
the rule than the exception that images do not print. Sometimes even
parts of graphics don't print (e.g. certain lines) while other parts of
the same graphics do.

[Bug 266951] Re: Buffer I/O error on device sr0 Logical Block XXXXXX in Intrepid Ibex Alpha 5

2009-11-10 Thread Matthias Jordan
Here's the next kicker. Somehow my libdvdcss got deleted - probably
during an upgrade, but I can only guess. I started VLC with -vv to find
a cute README at the top that said that there is no decss library
installed. With a little help from the wiki I actually installed that
thing again and now DVDs play. Still I wonder why the only error message
that appeared anywhere was in dmesg and only in 9.10 began to contain
some useful information. To me, this particular bug is fixed, but the
usability bug is still open. I cannot imagine how my mom would have
dealt with that.

[Bug 266951] Re: Buffer I/O error on device sr0 Logical Block XXXXXX in Intrepid Ibex Alpha 5

2009-11-10 Thread Matthias Jordan
Okay, here's the kicker: I upgraded to 9.10 and tried playing DVDs
again. No dice. The only difference this time was this:

[ 1406.593479] sr 1:0:0:0: [sr0] Add. Sense: Read of scrambled sector
without authentication

Then I thought - just out of despair - maybe it's the DVD and tried my
whole collection (11 DVDs - I know). The result: 5 don't play, 6 do.
Some of the 5 that don't play are marked "copy protected", some aren't.
This sounds like kind of a success but given that I could play any of
these a few Ubuntu releases ago still leaves a taste. Especially since I
now own store bought copies of "Serenity" and "Matrix" that I can't
watch anymore. (BTW: so sad they never made a sequel to Matrix.)

What I don't get is that even though libdvdread is installed I can't
read these DVDs.

I thought this bug was long since closed.

After deleting the gconf directory in my home dir, gnumeric is working

version. Since nobody else seems to have this problem, I guess this can
be closed. Thanks everybody!

[Bug 266951] Re: Buffer I/O error on device sr0 Logical Block XXXXXX in Intrepid Ibex Alpha 5

2009-08-15 Thread Matthias Jordan
It seems like I have the problem, too.

It took me ages and a stack of DVD and CD coasters to install Ubuntu in
the first place, because my system didn't finish the install process
regardless of the medium used (because of read errors). All DVDs and
CDs turned out okay in a different machine, though. The only way that
worked for me for installing Ubuntu was a USB stick configured using
unetbootin.

The Ubuntu version installed is 9.04, the kernel being Linux version
2.6.28-14-generic (bui...@yellow) (gcc version 4.3.3 (Ubuntu 4.3.3-5ubuntu4) )
#47-Ubuntu SMP Sat Jul 25 01:19:55 UTC 2009
The system is a Dell Inspiron 531, AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor
5600+, the DVD drive is an Optiarc DVD+-RW AD-5170S 101B:

The dmesg output during the (failing) attempt at reading a DVD is:

[ 107.291994] end_request: I/O error, dev sr0, sector 302112
[ 107.291998] Buffer I/O error on device sr0, logical block 75528

[ 107.292006] Buffer I/O error on device sr0, logical block 75531

Funnily, audio CDs work just great. What amazes me slightly is that VLC
actually managed to get some video off the DVD but no audio. Totem
failed completely.

I already installed the most recent BIOS version 1.0.13. The kernel is
32bit, the system 64bit but other than the DVD drive everything else is
working perfectly.

[Bug 374041] [NEW] Letters (fonts) sometimes gray instead of black

2009-05-09 Thread Matthias Jordan
Public bug reported:

Sometimes, text is rendered light gray-ish instead of black. That
applies to some buttons, menu lables, even to text in different web
browsers. My font rendering is set to "best form", but other settings
gave the same result. Now I set it to "black and white" but I kinda

Running Intrepid, the iBook does not wake up if put to sleep by
closing the lid. If put to sleep by any other means, pressing the
button wakes it up. I guess this is by design so, yes: fixed for me.

[Bug 303080] [NEW] Missing update-grub makes update process abort

2008-11-28 Thread Matthias Jordan
Public bug reported:

Apparently, some package maintainer assumes everybody is using grub to
boot. So some post-installation script tries to /sbin/update-grub after
installing the new kernel package. On systems that use LILO (e.g.
Intrepid Ibex ... duh) this fails badly.

Quick workaround for users:

sudo ln -s /bin/true /sbin/update-grub

But - seriously. This bug has already been reported for earlier kernel
versions. This needs to be fixed.

[Bug 274124] Re: Race condition in pulseaudio loading for GNOME session

Just to record another observation: the replacement esdcompat is
important, even if it doesn't fix the problem. I left it out because

[Bug 260951] Re: [Regression] Touchpad-button wakes up iBook from suspend

2008-10-03 Thread Matthias Jordan
My problem is about suspend2ram, which is the method used in both cases.
I don't think that I mix up suspend2disk and sus2ram because the
behaviour is the same in both cases (and I know how suspend2disk works
and what it looks like).

The preferences setting you mentioned is set to "Standby" (which is
sus2ram in my German locale, the other ones being "Ruhezustand" (which
is sus2disk) and some others).

[Bug 260951] Re: [Regression] Touchpad-button wakes up iBook from suspend

2008-09-27 Thread Matthias Jordan
I don't know. I just don't log everything that ceases to work or works
sporadically and my memory is really bad.

Today while experimenting again, I noticed something strange:

If I close my notebook, it puts itself to sleep and doesn't wake up when
I push the lid (and thus, the touchpad button). So everything is okay on
that front.

If I select the left-most option in the lower row of the logout screen
(standby, don't know - I use the German version), it puts itself to
sleep, too, but afterwards pushing the button wakes it up. After it woke
up, it doesn't go into standby when I close the lid. Only after I logged
in again, it goes to sleep when I close the lid. I never noticed there
is a different behaviour between these two ways to put the notebook to
standby.

[Bug 260951] [NEW] Touchpad-button wakes up iBook from suspend

2008-08-24 Thread Matthias Jordan
Public bug reported:

My iBook puts itself to suspend-to-ram reliably. The problem is, when
the touchpad button is pressed, the iBook wakes up again. This behaviour
is unwanted, because the touchpad button is also pressed when the lid is
closed and some pressure is applied to the lid. Such a situation occurs
frequently when handling the closed iBook or when the machine is carried
in a full backpack. Plus, this issue has been reported earlier and has
also already been fixed.

Honestly, is there any mechanisms in the development process that might
stop these tons of regressions?

[Bug 112374] Re: touchpad fuziness on iBook

2008-08-17 Thread Matthias Jordan
Now, running 2.6.24-21-powerpc, the problem started about 5 minutes
after I booted the machine. At a moderate ambient temperature of 21
degrees Celsius, I doubt this is due to a thermal problem in the iBook.

[Bug 112374] Re: touchpad fuziness on iBook

2008-08-02 Thread Matthias Jordan
Now under 2.6.24-20-powerpc the bug is still observable.

Today it happened again. I tried to "fix" it by putting the iBook to
sleep and waking it up again, but that didn't work.

I observed one new and quite remarkable thing: When the touchpad was
being "fuzzy", I could manipulate the mouse pointer not only by touching
the touchpad, but even by letting my finger hover multiple millimeters
above the touchpad, meaning: without even touching the touchpad. To me,
this looks like evidence of a calibration issue.

A quick workaround is reloading the appletouch module and then maybe
restarting X to reload the touchpad settings.

[Bug 248322] [NEW] Gnumeric does not offer open dialog

2008-07-14 Thread Matthias Jordan
Public bug reported:

Directly after starting Gnumeric, the File menu options "Neu" (new) and
"Öffnen" (open) are not available. What is available, though, are save
and save-as. The only way to open a spreadsheet is by double-clicking or
file history.

Expected behaviour: Menu items "new" and "open" are active, maybe as
well as save and save-as.

I'm using the German locale. Maybe this is locale specific.

[Bug 226279] Re: Kernel 2.6.24-17 - broken resume from suspend to RAM

2008-06-06 Thread Matthias Jordan
For me, this issue is fixed in Linux version 2.6.24-19-powerpc
([EMAIL PROTECTED]) (gcc version 4.1.3 20080308 (prerelease) (Ubuntu
4.1.2-21ubuntu1)) #1 Wed Jun 4 15:27:43 UTC 2008

Also the reboot issue mentioned by APavlov doesn't show up on my
machine. Thanks a million for fixing this!

[Bug 226279] Re: Kernel 2.6.24-17 - broken resume from suspend to RAM

2008-05-28 Thread Matthias Jordan
To me, the 2.6.24-16-powerpc was just as bad as the -17 but I downgraded
to 2.6.22-14-powerpc and now suspend2ram works just fine. Hibernation
sadly doen't work, though.

So with no changes other then the kernel and related modules, this seems
like a kernel problem.

[Bug 112374] Re: touchpad fuziness on iBook

2008-05-28 Thread Matthias Jordan
Funnily, the same happened to me again. Without any manipulation of the
machine at all.

This time I was able to rmmod a couple of modules. I'd say the culprit
is one of usbcore, appletouch, usbhid, ohci_hcd and ehic_hcd. After
removing these modules and re-loading them, the touchpad worked again.

BTW, I'm under 2.6.24-16-powerpc.

[Bug 112374] Re: touchpad fuziness on iBook

2008-05-28 Thread Matthias Jordan
This hasn't happened to me ever before I upgraded to Hardy. Since then,
I got this problem a couple times.

The funny thing is, diagnosing the problem was next to impossible
because also the keyboard started to behave strangely, taking very long
to accept input (in the order of seconds) and repeating some keystrokes
multiple times (in the order of tens). After a reboot both the touchpad
and keyboard problems were gone so I doubt it's hardware related. I'd
guess USB module or similar.

Last time the problems started shortly after turning off tapping using
the Touchpad system menu item.

[Bug 226279] Re: Kernel 2.6.24-17 - broken resume from suspend to RAM

2008-05-11 Thread Matthias Jordan
I guess I can confim this for my last-gen iBook G4. Also with
linux-2.6.24-17 (Hardy).

I put the machine to sleep which works just fine. After that I wake it
up and the screen turns on again. The text on it is a log line reading
"drm_sysfs_suspend". Nothing more.

The machine does not respond to ping or ssh afterwards, neither directly
after the wake-up nor 10 or 28 minutes later. There is some disk
activity during the whole time span, though.

Another issue is that the machine again wakes up by pressing the
touchpad button, which is a regression. Problem here is that the closed
lid presses the button when put in a tight bag. This would cause the
machine to return from sleep, which is clearly not intended here.

[Bug 99675] Re: System incredibly slow after suspend, refuses to restart

2007-11-17 Thread Matthias Jordan
I, too, can confirm this bug on a 1,3 GHz G4 iBook with the Gutsy Gibbon
inside. The machine goes to sleep (heartbeat LED pulses, backlight is
off, everything comes to a halt) when closing the lid. When opening the
lid, subsystems audibly restart but the screen remains powered on in a
strange configuration (horizontal black and white stripes). Incidentally
(or not) a friend of mine has the same problem on his machine.

[Bug 59848] Re: no suspend2ram on edgy (ibook g4)

2006-11-07 Thread Matthias Jordan
Can repro. On my G4 iBook it looks like this:
In GDM (i.e. without GNOME running) the iBook goes into Standby when the cover
is closed. As soon as GNOME is running, closing the cover only locks the
screen. There is no Standby and no suspend2ram in this case. cat
/sys/power/state prints "disk" on my machine.
As Alessio reported: suspend was no problem on my machine with Dapper.
