[Bug 943010] Re: notify-osd starts automatically in gnome session and prevents gnome-shell from owning notifications dbus service
The code is an if statement, it can only execute one of the two programs, and the desired behavior involves not running either since if either runs it claims that dbus service instead of gnome-shell. [Bug 943010] Re: notify-osd starts automatically in gnome session and prevents gnome-shell from owning notifications dbus service
** Description changed: When I log into Ubuntu 11.10's gnome-shell session, notify-osd is started first when I attempt to run a program that calls notifications. I have to manually kill notify-osd and restart gnome-shell, every time I log in. I mentioned this problem in LP #830467 but that bug is technically not the same issue, and that bug received no traffic or attempts to fix the bug in the last four months. Expected behavior: -Log into Gnome, open quodlibet, see gnome-shell notification on the bottom of the screen Actual behavior: - -Log into gnome, open quodlibet, see notify-osd notification in upper left corner and notify-osd appears in the process list + -Log into gnome, open quodlibet, see notify-osd notification in upper right corner and notify-osd appears in the process list Since removing notify-osd from Ubuntu is not possible, configuring the code that is run when notify-osd is started, presumably when there is a call made on dbus for notifications, such that if gnome-shell is running it is always favored over notify-osd. In the meantime it seems the only workaround for gnome-shell users is to remove notify-osd. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/943010 Title: notify-osd starts automatically in gnome session and prevents gnome- shell from owning notifications dbus service To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/notify-osd/+bug/943010/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 943010] Re: notify-osd starts automatically in gnome session and prevents gnome-shell from owning notifications dbus service
I can see why it starts notify-osd. My $GDMSESSION is gnome-shell, but $(basename `readlink /etc/alternatives/x-session-manager`) = gnome- session, so It starts notify-osd in that code. [Bug 830467] Re: Packaging: gnome-shell should be marked as Provides: notification-daemon
The bug where they were both running at the same time seems to be an odd fluke, I can't reproduce it. The main issue was that notify-osd would co-opt notifications, which is the behavior that garyvdm described. I removed notify-osd and the problems went away. I've reinstalled it but I haven't restarted my gnome session since then, but when I do I'll look to see if the old behaviors occur again. The problem with my app was that it created a persistent notification, which when notify-osd caught it, displayed it as a popup box. I have fixed the app a bit, it now works with gnome-shell the way I desire, but we shall see what happens if notify-osd is somehow started. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/830467 Title: Packaging: gnome-shell should be marked as Provides: notification- daemon To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-shell/+bug/830467/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 830467] Re: Packaging: gnome-shell should be marked as Provides: notification-daemon
Having notify-osd installed causes it to block gnome-shell's notifications, instead making them appear using notify-osd's style. For instance, running notify_server_get_caps() would presumably get the capabilities of notify-osd, and thus apps will not allow for persistent notifications, which is disappointing. It also led to a bug that I've noticed, where both notification servers are working at the same time, and thus causing notifications to appear on both the bottom and upper left of the screen. Without uninstalling notify-osd I don't really see how this can be avoided. Unless you can find a way to disable notify-osd but keep it installed, it's going to significantly impair the gnome-shell experience.

[Bug 288461] Re: gimp menus always on top of images
I found this bug recently, and discussed it with someone in #gimp on the GNOME IRC, who helpfully pointed out that this was due to the toolbox and other dialogs being hinted by the window manager as Utility windows. This is configurable in the Preferences, under the Window Manager heading, with dropdown boxes to choose the window manager hinting. The default behavior is questionable and a bit confusing, but this is not a bug. In short, to change in order to get expected behavior: 1. Open Edit Menu 2. Go to Preferences 3. Go to the Window Management section on the left. 4. On the right, examine the dropdown boxes under the Window Manager Hints heading, and select Normal Window for it to be treated as a window. 5. [Bug 852184] Re: Typeahead search entry not persistent while receiving input in Icon View
** Description changed: - When in a folder with multiple files, you normally can select a file by - name by typing the name of the file. A small box appears below the - nautilus window containing the search text. + While in Icon View, the search entry typeahead that appears when you + begin typing disappears very quickly, irrespective of the user's typing. + It lasts less than a second, not long enough to type more than two + characters, and is difficult to bring back up. - In the nautilus currently in 11.10b1, the search box disappears while I - am typing. It doesn't seem to be a focus issue because nautilus is - focused the whole time. It varies betweend disappearing almost - instantly, or after a second, but in either case it is very rapid, too - rapid to type a full filename. + This problem only occurs in Icon View and Compact View. + + How to reproduce: + + 1. Open nautilus. + 2. Enter Icon view in an empty folder + 3. Create three folders, LongName1, LongName2, LongName3. + 4. Make sure that the focus is on Nautilus. + 5. Begin typing LongName3. + + What is expected: The helpful search entry will pop up, allowing you to + type the name of LongName3, and selecting it for you. + + What actually happens: The search entry shows up, highlights LongName1 + as it is first in the dictionary order, then disappears around the + letter 'n', and you are forced to try to retype LongName3. + + After reading the source somewhat in Nautilus to better understand the + problem, I rewrote this bug and provided what I suppose is a more + readable summary. [Bug 795720] [NEW] mouse input/alt+tab stops working, restarts working (sometimes) after minimizing and restoring windows
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg Without any obvious trigger, the mouse will cease working. I can still move it, but it doesn't do anything like open tooltips or click, and hovering over the Ubuntu button doesn't cause the launcher to appear. Switching windows via alt+tab or super+w doesn't work either, though otherwise the keyboard input works okay in the window which has focus, and i can bring the launcher up by holding Super, and launch programs using it with the keyboard shortcuts. After i minimize all windows using Super+d, the bring them back, the mouse begins working again for a brief time, until i try alt-tabbing again or clicking outside of the currently-focused window, in which case it reverts to the previous behavior. I've managed to make it go away through some non-repeatable series of minimizing/unminimizing windows and opening the Ubuntu menu over and over again.
