[Bug 989981] [NEW] Scrolling using scroll wheel does not work in certain GTK 3 applications but works elsewhere in 12.04

2012-04-27 Thread Michael Moorman
Public bug reported:

I'm getting very haphazard scrolling behaviors using the scroll wheel in
GTK 3 applications. It will work properly for a time then cease to
function with no apparent cause.

I'm using Ubuntu 12.04 and I have disabled overlay scrollbars using the
environment variable disable in /etc/profile.

I have verified that the problem manifests in:

Transmission
Nautilus
System Settings
Empathy
Ubuntu Software Center
Devhelp

The problem does not seem to exist in:

Gnome Terminal
Any application not using GTK 3

[Bug 989981] Re: Scrolling using scroll wheel does not work in certain GTK 3 applications but works elsewhere in 12.04

2012-04-27 Thread Michael Moorman
I can return it to proper functioning by removing and replacing the psmouse
kernel driver.
When I do so, these messages appear in the dmesg log:

[ 1639.710729] psmouse serio2: synaptics: Touchpad model: 1, fw: 7.2, id:
0x1c0b1, caps: 0xd04733/0xa4/0xa

/devices/platform/i8042/serio2/input/input10

If it is possible that this is a hardware issue, my hardware is a Dell
Inspiron 1750 laptop. I am only aware of this problem affecting the
touchpad scroll.

[Bug 943010] Re: notify-osd starts automatically in gnome session and prevents gnome-shell from owning notifications dbus service

2012-04-05 Thread Michael Moorman
The code is an if statement, it can only execute one of the two
programs, and the desired behavior involves not running either since if
either runs it claims that dbus service instead of gnome-shell.

So it should probably be changed to test for something which determines
that we're running gnome-shell explicitly and to not do anything in that
case.

[Bug 943010] Re: notify-osd starts automatically in gnome session and prevents gnome-shell from owning notifications dbus service

2012-03-12 Thread Michael Moorman
** Description changed:

When I log into Ubuntu 11.10's gnome-shell session, notify-osd is
started first when I attempt to run a program that calls notifications.
I have to manually kill notify-osd and restart gnome-shell, every time I
log in. I mentioned this problem in LP #830467 but that bug is
technically not the same issue, and that bug received no traffic or
attempts to fix the bug in the last four months.

  Expected behavior:
-Log into Gnome, open quodlibet, see gnome-shell notification on the bottom
of the screen

  Actual behavior:
- -Log into gnome, open quodlibet, see notify-osd notification in upper left
corner and notify-osd appears in the process list
+ -Log into gnome, open quodlibet, see notify-osd notification in upper right
corner and notify-osd appears in the process list

Since removing notify-osd from Ubuntu is not possible, configuring the
code that is run when notify-osd is started, presumably when there is a
call made on dbus for notifications, such that if gnome-shell is running
it is always favored over notify-osd. In the meantime it seems the only
workaround for gnome-shell users is to remove notify-osd.

[Bug 943010] Re: notify-osd starts automatically in gnome session and prevents gnome-shell from owning notifications dbus service

2012-03-11 Thread Michael Moorman
I can see why it starts notify-osd. My $GDMSESSION is gnome-shell, but
$(basename `readlink /etc/alternatives/x-session-manager`) = gnome-
session, so It starts notify-osd in that code. I don't have /usr/lib
/notification-daemon/notification-daemon installed anyway, so if that if
statement predicate was not true, it would end up spewing errors anyway.

After installing notification-daemon notify-osd doesn't start and

[Bug 914991] [NEW] Thunderbird sometimes marks whole newsgroups as read

2012-01-11 Thread Michael Moorman
Public bug reported:

I was tracking the upstream bug report #695309 for this issue, which has
affected Thunderbird 8.0, the version in Oneiric. The problem has just
been patched upstream in trunk and will make it into Thunderbird 12 when
that releases (in May, presumably too late for Precise). I filed this
bug report to make sure that the change gets noticed and backported to
Oneiric post-haste, as it's a pretty major usability failing and there
was no bug on LP that was tracking this upstream bug that I could find.

[Bug 899467] [NEW] Package does not build MESS

2011-12-02 Thread Michael Moorman
Public bug reported:

I was looking to install MESS when I noticed that xmess-sdl was removed

built from the mame package. I also noticed that it seems that the

[Bug 868032] Re: nautilus progress window marked skipped, not managed by gnome-shell

2011-11-09 Thread Michael Moorman
@pdf - The actual bug in my book is that Nautilus still has a separate
window for file transfers. I think the file transfer should be converted
to a gnome-shell notification, which obviates the need for handling its
window. I don't know if the Nautilus devs intend to do that though, or
how Unity would handle such a thing.

We should all keep it respectable in here for the hard work put in by
the devs, and properly thank didrocks for writing a patch.

[Bug 830467] Re: Packaging: gnome-shell should be marked as Provides: notification-daemon

2011-10-05 Thread Michael Moorman
The bug where they were both running at the same time seems to be an odd
fluke, I can't reproduce it. The main issue was that notify-osd would
co-opt notifications, which is the behavior that garyvdm described. I
removed notify-osd and the problems went away. I've reinstalled it but I
haven't restarted my gnome session since then, but when I do I'll look
to see if the old behaviors occur again.

The problem with my app was that it created a persistent notification,
which when notify-osd caught it, displayed it as a popup box. I have
fixed the app a bit, it now works with gnome-shell the way I desire, but
we shall see what happens if notify-osd is somehow started.

2011-10-04 Thread Michael Moorman
Having notify-osd installed causes it to block gnome-shell's
notifications, instead making them appear using notify-osd's style. For
instance, running notify_server_get_caps() would presumably get the
capabilities of notify-osd, and thus apps will not allow for persistent
notifications, which is disappointing. It also led to a bug that I've
noticed, where both notification servers are working at the same time,
and thus causing notifications to appear on both the bottom and upper
left of the screen. Without uninstalling notify-osd I don't really see
how this can be avoided.

Unless you can find a way to disable notify-osd but keep it installed,
it's going to significantly impair the gnome-shell experience.

[Bug 868032] [NEW] gnome-shell does not manage the nautilus file operations dialog

2011-10-04 Thread Michael Moorman
Public bug reported:

When running nautilus and doing a file transfer that brings up the file
operations window, I noticed that the window doesn't appear in the Alt+Tab
grouping for nautilus, and does not appear in the gnome-shell Windows activity
or even in the thumbnail for the workspace that the window resides in. This
makes it very difficult to find when there are many windows in the current
workspace, which is usually the case in my workflow.

hopefully it will be fixed. Until then, can someone see to importing

[Bug 288461] Re: gimp menus always on top of images

2011-09-26 Thread Michael Moorman
I found this bug recently, and discussed it with someone in #gimp on
the GNOME IRC, who helpfully pointed out that this was due to the
toolbox and other dialogs being hinted by the window manager as Utility
windows. This is configurable in the Preferences, under the Window
Manager heading, with dropdown boxes to choose the window manager
hinting.

The default behavior is questionable and a bit confusing, but this is
not a bug.

In short, to change in order to get expected behavior:

1. Open Edit Menu
2. Go to Preferences
3. Go to the Window Management section on the left.
4. On the right, examine the dropdown boxes under the Window Manager Hints
heading, and select Normal Window for it to be treated as a window.
5. Restart the GIMP.

[Bug 852184] Re: Typeahead search entry not persistent while receiving input in Icon View

2011-09-21 Thread Michael Moorman
** Description changed:

- When in a folder with multiple files, you normally can select a file by
- name by typing the name of the file. A small box appears below the
- nautilus window containing the search text.
+ While in Icon View, the search entry typeahead that appears when you
+ begin typing disappears very quickly, irrespective of the user's typing.
+ It lasts less than a second, not long enough to type more than two
+ characters, and is difficult to bring back up.

- In the nautilus currently in 11.10b1, the search box disappears while I
- am typing. It doesn't seem to be a focus issue because nautilus is
- focused the whole time. It varies betweend disappearing almost
- instantly, or after a second, but in either case it is very rapid, too
- rapid to type a full filename.
+ This problem only occurs in Icon View and Compact View.
+
+ How to reproduce:
+
+ 1. Open nautilus.
+ 2. Enter Icon view in an empty folder
+ 3. Create three folders, LongName1, LongName2, LongName3.
+ 4. Make sure that the focus is on Nautilus.
+ 5. Begin typing LongName3.
+
+ What is expected: The helpful search entry will pop up, allowing you to
+ type the name of LongName3, and selecting it for you.
+
+ What actually happens: The search entry shows up, highlights LongName1
+ as it is first in the dictionary order, then disappears around the
+ letter 'n', and you are forced to try to retype LongName3.
+
+ After reading the source somewhat in Nautilus to better understand the
+ problem, I rewrote this bug and provided what I suppose is a more
+ readable summary.

[Bug 855240] [NEW] Volume notification slider does not appear

2011-08-31 Thread Michael Moorman
I found out how to reproduce this effect in a different way.

1: Open two instances of program A which has an icon in the Launcher
2: Open one instance of program B. Program B should have focus
3. Right-click the icon for Program A, and click the top selection with the
program name.

Now one of the windows will be focused, but not the one that is on top.

Tested with Nautilus and GNOME Terminal.

[Bug 801829] [NEW] USC is a gray background without icons, is unresponsive (no menus)

2011-06-24 Thread Michael Moorman
Public bug reported:

Starting the Software Center through all the usual ways produces the
same thing. The application loads with just a gray background in the
window, and nothing else, and there are no menus in the global menu, and
keybindings do not work. The application can be quit using the Close

[Bug 795720] [NEW] mouse input/alt+tab stops working, restarts working (sometimes) after minimizing and restoring windows

2011-06-10 Thread Michael Moorman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

Without any obvious trigger, the mouse will cease working. I can still
move it, but it doesn't do anything like open tooltips or click, and
hovering over the Ubuntu button doesn't cause the launcher to appear.
Switching windows via alt+tab or super+w doesn't work either, though
otherwise the keyboard input works okay in the window which has focus,
and i can bring the launcher up by holding Super, and launch programs
using it with the keyboard shortcuts. After i minimize all windows using
Super+d, the bring them back, the mouse begins working again for a brief
time, until i try alt-tabbing again or clicking outside of the
currently-focused window, in which case it reverts to the previous
behavior. I've managed to make it go away through some non-repeatable
series of minimizing/unminimizing windows and opening the Ubuntu menu
over and over again.

The bug only happens to me in Unity in 11.04; it does not happen in the
Ubuntu Classic session, and did not happen to me in 10.10.

I'm attaching Drake Wilson's patch from the Debian bug thread, which I
can confirm works on my system (maverick amd64 with kernel
2.6.35-25-generic)

** Patch added: Patch borrowed from debbugs #427360
