[Bug 1095068] Re: Empathy: No contacts on gtalk: 'status is set to offline'

2013-01-19 Thread Miguel Branco
I'm not sure why you come to that conclusion, but I always authorize the
accounts whenever requested (the top right menu button turns red). In
fact, I repeatedly authorized and unauthorized the gtalk account when
debugging the problem, trying to make Empathy show the contacts.

In any case the problem seems mitigated, it happens infrequently now
(and never does if I just use the messaging icon workaround).

Sorry if it's still a problem on my end.

[Bug 1095068] Re: Empathy: No contacts on gtalk: 'status is set to offline'

2013-01-08 Thread Miguel Branco
This only seems to happen if I launch Empathy from the Unity Launcher.
It works correctly when I set my status to Online through the Unity
Panel and then launch Empathy from there as well.

[Bug 1095068] [NEW] Empathy: No contacts on gtalk: 'status is set to offline'

2013-01-01 Thread Miguel Branco
Public bug reported:

This problem happens in two computers, whether I use auto-login or not, with
Ubuntu 12.10.
I configured two accounts on the Online Accounts window: Facebook and Google.

My Facebook contacts always appear on Empathy, but gTalk contacts almost
never appear, with the error message status is set to offline
appearing in red at the top of Empathy's main window.

I have to restart Empathy several times until I get lucky and it shows
my gTalk contacts.

I also try setting my status to Online in various ways: through the
Unity Panel, through Empathy's main-window 'Go Online' button, and
through Empathy's main-window dropdown box. The symptoms are the same no
matter what I do.

[Bug 946677] Re: UMS dri support missing for r200

2012-04-04 Thread Miguel Branco
I would like to reopen this bug because it does seem that it is not a
question of UMS support for dri on r200 or r300.

I'm on PP beta 2 on i386, I've compiled and installed mesa 7.11 and
7.10 and the problem remains. Didn t notice before as I didn t need to
disable modesetting. I'm investigating by compiling different options
and it seems somehow linked to the radeondrmfb which seems to do more
than framebuffering.

Anyhow it seems off that UMS support for relatively recent cards would
be dropped, i've googled a bit and didn t find any metion of this, just
the dropping of older cards. And x700 (rv410) were quite pouplar just a
few years ago.

Should I file a different bug for r300/r400 ?

[Bug 355232] Re: acpi-cpufreq/powernow-k8 should not be built-in into the kernel image

2012-03-21 Thread Miguel Branco
Sure I have old hardware, but I have to recompile the entire kernel with
module enabled for speedstep-centrino instead of just compiling the
module in a few seconds, as I have to patch the driver for accepting the
cpufreq tables for my Sonoma (stepping C0) 2.0 GHz Pentium-M which is
not standard built-in (btw also affects all Dothans (stepping B0), only
Banyas tables are built-in). BIOS won't enable acpi-cpufreq, of course,
supposing it has got all the tables. I guess that this ug is 3 year
old and never will be fixed despite solid argumentation and flimsy
counter-argumentation.

And here the problem is NOT gone with the last update.

I'm on Beta 1 and compiled/installed 0.2.5ubuntu2. Did I miss some Beta

Card is ATI X700.

Screen still showing either displaced full login screen or multiple
black login-like tiles on top.

Also now logging out from session may sometimes present issues like
multiple restarts of lightdm. Didn't notice that before.

I'm glad that many others had their issue solved, maybe I have a

Can anyone tell if this is another bug ?

[Bug 945514] Re: compiz crashed with SIGSEGV in get_radeon_bo()

2012-03-13 Thread Miguel Branco
Just to add some feedback, despite the crash notification the session is not
impaired and compiz continues working, I guess it is relaunched.
I wonder also if this is not related to the shortly garbled screen between the
greeter login and the desktop bacgkround appearance. I doubt I'm alone at
experiencing it, it seems so clearly a bug that I don't know if I need (and
how) to describe it. So much for the smooth background transition from login
to session. I'm assuming this typically will be ironed out for the RC.

I'm reluctant to apply the PPA because I fear that if it breaks I will
not be able to recover. Could someone summarize/update the cli steps as
done by SvG in the past for 11.10 ? I've tried these manual steps but it
broke my networking startup (i.e., updated resolvconf, libc,
init/resolv.conf, removed rcS.d/S07, updated symlink). I could recover
by backing up the original files. My S07 script is activated at startup
so should I disable it with update-rc and exactly how ?

the language I wanted.

2010-04-21 Thread Miguel Branco
Well, just in case this could help, i would rember this was a 32 bit system
(have read about similar issues with nspluginwrapper but on 64 bit systems).
There wasn't a symlink in firefox/add-ons/plugins to nspluginwrapper on my
system which was being upgraded since Gutsy.
Now why FF was going after the nspluginwrapper .so if all libflashplayer.so
where in there, i can 't tell. Chrome and Opera seemed to be comfortable with
these. Apparently until Lucid (beta) also this was not required by FF as flash
worked flawlessly.

[Bug 554883] [NEW] flash plugin broken on firefox 3.6.2 after update on lucid beta 1

2010-04-03 Thread Miguel Branco
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: flashplugin-nonfree

I've made an update today on Lucid beta 1 and the flash plugin for
mozilla stopped working.

Browsing other similar errors, I could resume functionality for Chrome
and Opera by installing nspluginwrapper and editing npviewer as per the
click error . Enabling compiz or not doesn t seem to make any
difference.

But the error remains for Firefox. Some flash will just not completely
appear and in youtube I get a blank. I can see the original black screen
for for a few miliseconds.. What surprised me a bit is that when using
Flashblock I won't get the the logo on youtube (in other apps yes).

So it seems really that I have a broken flash plugin. Reinstalling from
adobe did not change anything.

As noted, Chrome and Opera are working ok.

I guess this is an original bug as it is not the click issue nor an
install or rendering one.

I dont know if this helps but the output to the screen is not totally
frozen as i can see usb messages by plugging/unplugging usb devices.
Actually I can always see an error message from a previous usb keyboard
initialization which was timed out, so it appears 11 s later. after the
init-bottom done message. So apparently we are still on the console
screen.

BTW after the done message the hard drive still works hard for a good
time ( 10s) and then stops any activity.

[Bug 551062] Re: mountall: Could not connect to plymouth

2010-03-31 Thread Miguel Branco
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 530779 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/530779

I'm not sure this is relevant to your opinion that this is a duplicate of bug
#530779, but I was able to boot without problems until some updates ago (2 days
- plymouth stopped showing), and now I'm getting this message (with today's
update).
Bug #530779 was opened a month ago, is that normal? Just wanted to make sure.

I can boot all the time, I just don't see plymouth's splash (with
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=quiet splash).

[Bug 552046] Re: Lucid beta 1 won' t boot, plymouth launch broken

2010-03-31 Thread Miguel Branco
Thanks.

Could I also ask if it is normal that when I first booted with the new
Plymouth version the splash screen appeared for a relatively good time (
i could see the dots move) but when I rebooted many times since it
only appears very late just before gdm login screen ? I ve read a few
posts telling the same and would like to know if this behavior is just
normal beta tweaking. The funny thing though as I said is that on the
first run it was quite ok. Rgds

this still open (i guess as beta this plymouth issue will be solved, but
it is anyway a bug as apparently many systems are not featuring it) and
since this bug being the primary one, it could hide the issue to

[Bug 552046] Re: Lucid beta 1 won' t boot, plymouth launch broken

2010-03-31 Thread Miguel Branco
Well Steve, first thanks for the attention. You all seem to confirm we
were right to maintain as a bug since this is not happening to a
majority of users and could remain unnoticed.

Sorry if we lack more info but we were already quite lucky to bypass
the issue and be able to pinpoint on plymouth. AFAIC I ve made on
Monday/Tuesday (2 days ago) a totally clean upgrade from 9.10 using
update-manager -d, downloaded 1,7 G and restarted. After i could init
with bin/bash and network with dhclient eth0, i could do another apt-get
dist-upgrade which download another 178 M (despite my really fresh
upgrade), which included an update to plymouth as i could notice. So i
guess i have really the lastest plymouth version.

Alt-Fn wont work. Vanilla kernel options (tried xvesaforce, nodmraid,
nomodeset, noapic etc... at first to no avail so i was back to standard
options, especially no vga option whatsoever ).

My laptop features an ATI Mobile 700 card.

[Bug 552046] [NEW] Lucid beta 1 won' t boot, stuck after init bottom

2010-03-30 Thread Miguel Branco
Public bug reported:

LL beta1 just downloaded won' t boot whatever the kernel and recovery
mode, and will stop after init bottom scripts.

Some users pointed the same bug in the development forum in just the
last few hours so may be really a new issue.

No particular detail to releve but that it was an upgrade from 9.04 and
that my amilo fujitsu siemens laptop has a vt6132 raid controller so
that raid is afaik always enabled even if there is only one hard drive.
In the past this prevented me from installing opensolaris as the driver
for the raid controller was not available and the disk would not be
recognized. This couldn t be disabled on bios.

Also it a SCSI controlled hard drive steup.

[Bug 502406] Re: os-prober does not detect karmic, but only lucid ?

I don't think os_prober is supposed to detect the current running OS, isn't
that 10_linux's job?
If I understood correctly, you want only one kernel to boot your karmic from,
right? Why not delete the older linux-images?

[Bug 546343] [NEW] Grub doesn't display distro's versions

2010-03-24 Thread Miguel Branco
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: grub2

I don't know if this is by design, but my opinion is it shouldn't be.
Grub2 (both 30_os-prober and 10_linux) saves menu entries for linux distros
using only the name and kernel version.

So instead of displaying:

Ubuntu 10.04 (or Ubuntu Lucid Lynx), with Linux yada yada

we have

Ubuntu, with Linux yada yada

which is (again, in my opinion) more confusing when you're trying to
choose the version you want to boot.

My opinion is we should have the Distro's complete name and version and
(maybe!) omit the kernel for the latest one.
All the other OS's are using $LONGNAME for their menu entries, so why not linux?

I don't usually know what kernel version I have in my Distros, but I do
know their version numbers.

[Bug 542207] [NEW] nautilus draws white bars on desktop

2010-03-19 Thread Miguel Branco
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

I'm running Lucid Beta 1.
Nautilus version: 1:2.29.92.1-0ubuntu1

Whenever I change my theme in System Preferences Appearance,
nautilus draws two white bars in the desktop, as if the wallpaper didn't
fill the whole screen. They are located in the left and right borders of
the screen, between panels.

The problem persists even if I choose 'Solid Color' as a wallpaper, and
can only be fixed if I kill nautilus and then bring it up again.

I agree with Adam Williamson and I think a lot of the heat this is

maybe it would open our minds a bit if we knew what sort of plans

[Bug 25547] Re: splash screen does not free virtual console #8

2009-09-23 Thread Miguel Branco
This confirms my fears that my bug #429616 wouldn't be fixed quickly as
this is trailing for 4 years. At least here it was ranked medium while
mine was ranked low.

I've investigated a bit and it seems that the culprit is in usplash.c,
where the vt is opened, activated on vt8 by ioctl VT_ACTIVATE,
duplicated on stdin and then closed (close(vt_fd)). Apparently this is
not sufficiendt as it is detached but not deallocated. I've found a
poorly documented option VT_DISALLOCATE in ioctl but it didn'work. Also
adding VT_RELDISP as recommended somewhere didn help but I don't know
the right sequence.

The workarounds seem to be:
a) set gdm.conf to start on VT9 instead of VT7
b) or hack the source code to start usplash in VT10. Mainly in usplash.c , 2
lines, and also libusplash.c for some checks (like requiring vt 10). Also
needs initramfs script to maknod 10 ttys, as it only creates the bare minimum
8...
c) or simply comment out 3 lines in libusplash.c where usplash is attached to
vt8. It works the same and actually can't see why the usplash is attached to a
vt, there must be a reason i guess.

[Bug 429616] Re: usplash won't deallocate vt even if console is redirected

2009-09-22 Thread Miguel Branco
** Summary changed:

- x display manager won't open session on next free vt
+ usplash won't deallocate vt even if console is redirected

** Description changed:

- Binary package hint: xdm
+ Binary package hint: usplash

- Since Ibex, opening a new session will create it on vt9, even if vt8
- has been released from usplash activities at kernel boot by
+ Since Hardy at least, opening a new session will create it on vt9, even
+ if vt8 has been released from usplash activities at kernel boot by
console=ttyX, unless vt8 is specifically forced (through startx)
-
- So somehow the dm seems just to assume that vt8 is permanently assigned
- to usplash or the info is not reset somewhere.

  Bug reproduction:

- - Boot 9.04 by adding, say, console=tty4 to the kernel boot line to redirect
usplash screen messages from vt8 to vt4
+ - Boot 9.04 by adding, say, console=tty4 to the kernel boot line to redirect

+ - startx -- :1 will create new graphical session on vt9 by default
+ - but startx -- :1 vt8 will create new graphical session on vt8 without
conflicts.

- This default behaviour of course also happens at New Session from
- inside the graphical session, but there you have no option to force vt8.
+ This default behaviour also happens at a new session from inside gdm,

fair enough, at least for the 4th line (the other 3 i could try to
challenge).

would you anyway be able to hint which file i could look into, haven t
find anything in /etc/init.d (only some references to fgconsole check in
usplash) ?

[Bug 429616] Re: x display manager won't open session on next free vt

2009-09-17 Thread Miguel Branco
Sebastien

I beg to differ. Though sure this is not a critical bug, it certainly is
one since it's well documented that new vts should be created
sequentially, vt7, vt8, etc...

Also before I came to the startx discovery I've found quite a few
complaints, some very old dating from hardy or 2005 (like this
https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-
users/2005-November/056772.html) from a standard user).

I'm sure many people quit complaining as they assume that vt8 anyway is
allocated to usplash and have not been told you can redirect it. I can
say myself this is a regression as it worked ok in Feisty/Gutsy.

More importand yet, there are a number of indirect bugs probably related
to this, like bug #172444 running since Gutsy

Also please note that the behaviour occurs inside gdm but also from pure
startx command. For the time being I've modified gdm to start at vt9.
Startx then launches at vt7 and a second startx session launches at
vt...10. Could you maybe give a hint of which file I should hack to get
startx behaving as specified or is it hardcoded ?

Bottom line, I would ask you to raise to medium so that I can see it
fixed one day. It doesn't seem too hard to fix and the benefits may be
greater than it appears.

[Bug 429616] [NEW] x display manager won't open session on next free vt

2009-09-14 Thread Miguel Branco
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xdm

Since Ibex, opening a new session will create it on vt9, even if vt8
has been released from usplash activities at kernel boot by
console=ttyX, unless vt8 is specifically forced (through startx)

So somehow the dm seems just to assume that vt8 is permanently assigned
to usplash or the info is not reset somewhere.

Bug reproduction:

- Boot 9.04 by adding, say, console=tty4 to the kernel boot line to redirect
usplash screen messages from vt8 to vt4
- Log in new console session on tty1
- startx -- :1 vt8 will create new graphical session on vt8
- but startx -- :1 will create new graphical session on vt9 by default

This default behaviour of course happens at New Session from inside
the graphical session.

I could notice that the bug disappeared when I disable the Fast User

Well, actually linking .xsessionrc to .xinitrc breaks my system ... No
login (some xrdb error message).

But manifestly in this case it was sourced. So is having my login
broken the correct behaviour ? Will search about this xrdb error.

I' m an average user step-upgrading since 6.04 if 'm not wrong and
running standard gdm logins. Actually I've only noticed that I hadn't an
.xsession file when this bug ocurred and because i recently installed
monica to adjust my yellowish/blueish screen which installs in .xinitrc
(which definitely worked well under ibex but can't tell before because
I'm not sure I had already monica under hardy).

[Bug 364889] Re: reboot in jaunty doesn't restart from bios

Well, I think it´s a bug also.

I´m pretty much sure i didn´t choose to have kexec-tools installed
(don´t remember about any chrashdump choice either), except that for the
first time I tried the beta/rc jaunty release and maybe it was installed
by default or almost (i mean, suggested in the upgrade and then i just
clicked yes but can´t recall).

It´s a major change of behaviour that is not explained somewhere in the

I disagree. Can´t see since when .xsessionrc is the default sourced
file, this would be against a lot of legacy.

Yes it was so if the scripts look the same the issue is elsewhere,
that´s exactly the point. Maybe a permission issue. And in the scripts
if you read all of them you will find that usexsession and
altusersession should be sourced. Maybe these are not being correctly
set.

Ok, so GDM is not meant to source .xinitrc.

I have a few xsession errors (like xmodmap), could this cause somme breakage in

Does this daily iso fix mean that any delta upgrade from 8.10 will also

Otherwise good luck for any beta feedback.

[Bug 27109] Re: nautilus uses 100% cpu after closing a ssh session

2009-03-01 Thread Miguel Branco
I think that this is not right way to handle a bug that has been
reported since three years and through even more distros releases.

I've just landed here for the first time since I'm using nautilus for
sftp and was worried by this strange cpu activity even - and especially
- after the download would end, fearing that my transfers could not have
been cleanly closed. True that ie used in the past (more than a year
ago) sftp and didn't recall this behaviour.

I can reproduce at any tine: just open a remote sftp window and transfer
(I've dragged the directory from my local directory window and dropped).
Can see any other special setup that could influence, except that I 'm
running a SSVNC session thus having two ssh sessions. Also I'm using key
authentication, in case this matters.

[Bug 27109] Re: nautilus uses 100% cpu after closing a ssh session

2009-03-01 Thread Miguel Branco
Just another hint that just happened: I've tried to unmount the sftp
folder and the desktop was frozen (only, other app widows would work
normally) then all icons simply disappeared. Killing the sftp process
made reappear the desktop icons.

So maybe it a problem rather linked to the display of the sftp volume on
the desktop. In the past I had complain to no avail to the rather lousy
implementation of this desktop icon, which bring you back to root
directory after first login, so maybe it's more a dbus issue or
whatever.

[Bug 308211] Re: usplash fails to unlock x on vt8 (ibex)

2008-12-17 Thread Miguel Branco
Update: I'll eventually invalidate this bug or change its scope
because:

It happens I could open an xserver on vt8 (was using only startx -- :1
instead of startx -- :1 vt8) so vt8 is definitely not locked as it would
happen with default console=tty8 (and of course there is no ghost
xserver).

So I deduce for the time being the culprit is... the New session
feature from gnome-session manager which is apparently going directly to
vt9, even though vt8 IS released.. Could it be that this was modded
exactly to avoid any conflict with the vt8 usplash (I doubt as the new
session feature works fine if usplash is disabled) ? Or simply that
new session is being misinformed about vt8 being free (it seems now
since ibex that hal is taking care of some X stuff so maybe it is
related - would make sense).

Sorry for additional comment:

Bug is also not related to new session.

Simply put, startx -- :1 vt8 opens normally on vt8 but startx -- :1
opens on vt9.

So it seems the system believes vt8 is not available. Hal issue ?

Some resignated people may say this is the normal behaviour of usplash,
but in Hardy I had succeeded in bypassing this by passing
console=tty[1-6] option to the kernel together with quiet splash.

Since I upgraded (as far I can notice) to Ibex, this works no more.
Console redirection still works fine and vt8 apparently won´t be used by
usplash. Still, vt8 screens seems locked, even if just displays a
blinking cursor on black screen as the other vt[9-12], as described
above.

I don´t know which is the culprit: I´ve checked that no usplash process
is displayed in top or ps. There is no Xorg.1.lock in tmp and I´ve
actually deleted all all /tmp/Xorg.*.lock and rebooted to no avail.
Seems like a ghost xserver is created somewhere and not released. Have
tried to disable special effects of the fglrx driver to no avail.

After many tests though I´ve succeded briefly to fix by passing
console=tty[1-2] as I realized the fonts there were modified by usplash.
But having thought I had unlocked for good, I´ve restored console=tty4
as I used to and the lock reappeared and tty[1-2] won´t refix...

Of course without usplash everything runs fine and new sessions are
created on vt8.

[Bug 239021] Re: Hardy Freeze/Lockup with kernel 2.6.24-16-generic up to 2.6.24-19-generic

2008-07-21 Thread Miguel Branco
Seems like a I have the same issue. Had had in the past some rare
lockups but since Hardy 2.6.24 (and I guess since update to .1 - or -19
- even more) I've had more frequent lock-ups. Hard drive led starts
blinking fast as for a low-level routine and nothing happens, complete
freeze, only sys-alt-b works and in general when I reboot I happen to
have a kernel panic for out of sync. Nothing works then included power
button, have to take out the battery of my laptop !

Today happened twice, for some reason when opening Trash folder in
nautilus and trying to run the script to have root rights in the window
to restore a resilient file. Was able to reproduce (actually not
intentionally since I never imagined this could be the cause of it). The
other times seemed more linked to use of Firefox.

Is it related to acpi, should i set it off ?

[Bug 210957] Re: Connect to server sftp mount does not save folder location

2008-07-15 Thread Miguel Branco
I´ve now seen now that bug #198857 is indeed a duplicate technically
speaking, but from my average-joe perspective I was far away from
guessing the issues behind of what seems now majorly a basic UI bug
rather than an architecture issue. Simply stated, I just wanted like a
granma to connect to a sftp folder (true, based on the previous
experience from gutsy), and expected the behaviour of the installed icon
to be the same of the window opened. My suggestion is that it is a bad
compromise (probably with good intention of providing legacy) and better
not to display any icon on the desktop rather than a useless (for
granma) and annoying (for me) root folder . Of course the best still
seems to me to have the gutsy config, a folder icon opening on my home
folder.

[Bug 210957] Re: Connect to server sftp mount does not save folder location

2008-07-15 Thread Miguel Branco
Just to comment that I semm to understand now that it was more
coincidence than legacy intent as the mounted folder appears
automatically on the desktop. Seems like the best way would be to
disable display of these lesser mounted volumes

Same problem here, first connection is right. Wonder why is listed
invalid. Pretty much annoying, despite being ranked low priority.
Couldn't find where it has been report before except here, as it seems
slightly different from other natilus root redirection issues.

[Bug 149622] Re: Only PCM volume control takes effect

2008-03-27 Thread Miguel Branco
Same here, and PCM volume change doesn't work properly, i.e. when I hold
VolumeUp it increments the volume a random number of bars and then
starts from the beginning (mute).

[Bug 208006] [NEW] PCM volume control has a random factor

2008-03-27 Thread Miguel Branco
Public bug reported:

Using Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon and Ubuntu Hardy Heron BETA on a HP Pavilion
dv5000 series laptop.

I found this bug because of this one (until I had that problem I didn't notice
it because I didn't need to control PCM volume!):
https://bugs.launchpad.net/alsa-driver/+bug/149622

When I control the volume of the PCM (the only one that produces changes in the
audio according to the previously mentioned bug) with the keyboard shortcuts or
the mixer applet, the slider/sound level randomly resets to 0.
This is most noticeable if I hold the VolumeUp shortcut for a while and watch
it go back to mute, slide up until a random level, go back, etc..
