[Bug 1922637] Re: held broken packages trying to upgrade from Groovy to Hirsute (Xubuntu, MATE)

2021-08-01 Thread Mike Kupfer
This morning I tried removing xubuntu-core and xubuntu-desktop. "apt
autoremove" showed nothing to remove. I ran "update-manager -d" and got
to the window with the summary of changes (number of MB to download,
etc). That is, I did not see the error that I get when ubuntu-mate-
core, ubuntu-mate-desktop, xubuntu-core, and xubuntu-desktop are all
installed.

** Summary changed:

- held broken packages trying to upgrade from Groovy to Hirsute (Xubuntu, MATE)
+ held broken packages trying to upgrade from Hirsute to Impish (Xubuntu, MATE)

I have a VM that I've upgraded across several releases. It was
originally installed with Xubuntu; I forget what release. It's been
running Groovy (20.10) for a few months, and I recently (re)installed
MATE. I ran "update-manager -d" to upgrade to Hirsute beta. It failed
and suggested the problem might be transient. But trying again a day or
2 later failed as well. This time I checked the logs, and main.log
shows complaints about held broken packages. I don't currently have any
broken packages (according to Synaptic), and "apt-mark showhold"
displays nothing, so I assume this is a packaging problem related to the
  upgrade.

FWIW, I reinstalled ubuntu-mate-core and ubuntu-mate-desktop, and then
tried to upgrade from 21.04 to 21.10. I see the same failure that I saw
trying to go from 20.10 to 21.04.

[Bug 1922637] Re: held broken packages trying to upgrade from Groovy to Hirsute (Xubuntu, MATE)

2021-06-20 Thread Mike Kupfer
I tried again this past Friday night, running Xubuntu rather than MATE;
I was still unable to upgrade. I worked around the problem by removing
ubuntu-mate-core and ubuntu-mate-desktop, followed by "apt autoremove".
After that, I was able to upgrade to 21.04. I don't know if that's the
minimal workaround.

[Bug 1553626] Re: blank console after upgrading to 3.2.0-99

2016-03-09 Thread Mike Kupfer
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected xenial

** Description changed:

  Ubuntu 12.04.5, ASUS model 1015E, x86_64

When I boot the 3.2.0-99 kernel on my ASUS netbook, I pretty much never
get a working display manager. (I think it booted okay the first time
after installing the kernel, but that's it.) Usually I just get a black
  display. I have also gotten

  - an almost complete login screen, except the background is wrong
(uniform purple instead of my wallpaper), and trackpad clicks are
  ignored (but trackpad motion works)

  - stuck at the Ubuntu splash screen

I once tried booting in recovery mode. I noticed a message about
modprobe being terminated by signal 9, and I noticed several messages
about modprobe timeouts. But other than that the messages didn't tell
me anything that I could make sense of.

I can ssh into the system. Unfortunately, "apport-bug linux" gets stuck
(it still says "collecting problem information" after 30 minutes), so
I'm filing this directly on Launchpad. I can get the apport
configuration information from the 3.2.0-98 kernel (that kernel works
just fine). I can also collect any log files, ps output, etc. that
you'd like. lightdm does seem to be running. The only suspicious thing
I see in the log files is that Xorg.0.log is missing a bunch of text
that it contains when using the -98 kernel.

I noticed that I had an out-of-date BIOS, but upgrading the BIOS did not
  fix anything.

Reinstalling the -99 kernel did not help.

[Bug 1553626] Re: blank console after upgrading to 3.2.0-99

2016-03-05 Thread Mike Kupfer
I booted the -98 kernel, enabled wireless in Network Manager, and then
booted the -99 kernel. I'm afraid apport-collect still stalls, and I
still see rfkill stuck in D+ state.

So, I can manually attach files from /var/log. Or I could try running
apport-collect with the -98 kernel running. Let me know how to proceed.

[Bug 1553626] Re: blank console after upgrading to 3.2.0-99

2016-03-05 Thread Mike Kupfer
I ran "apport-collect 1553626", but it appeared to hang. (After an
hour, it was still saying "Collecting problem information".)

I poked around a bit while it was running. Here's some ps output in
case it's useful:

camomile$ ps -t pts/1
  PID TTY TIME CMD
 1757 pts/100:00:00 bash
 1825 pts/100:00:00 apport-collect
 1830 pts/100:01:08 apport-gtk
 1835 pts/100:00:00 dbus-launch
 2022 pts/100:00:00 rfkill
camomile$ ps u 2022
USER PID %CPU %MEMVSZ RSS TTY STAT START TIME COMMAND
kupfer2022 0.0 0.0 4156 352 pts/1D+ 19:43 0:00 rfkill list

I will see if enabling wireless makes things better.

[Bug 1553626] [NEW] blank console after upgrading to 3.2.0-99

2016-03-05 Thread Mike Kupfer
Public bug reported:

** Affects: linux (Ubuntu)

[Bug 1160091] [NEW] libreoffice calc crashed when trying to save spreadsheet

2013-03-25 Thread Mike Kupfer
Public bug reported:

What I did: I started LibreOffice Writer and used it to view and edit
various documents. I then made some edits to a spreadsheet and tried to
save it. I'm pretty sure I pressed ctrl-S to do the save, rather than
invoking from the toolbar or menu, but I don't remember for sure.

What I expected: the spreadsheet would be saved to disk.

What happened: Calc crashed.

I downloaded the debug symbols to get a stack trace. Unfortunately, I
ran into 947778, so I'm not sure the stack trace is correct. Here it is
anyway, in case it's useful.

Core was generated by `/usr/lib/libreoffice/program/soffice.bin --writer

[Bug 880533] Re: Thunar reports Trash Empty when it is not

2012-11-16 Thread Mike Kupfer
Sorry... I didn't read the original description as closely as I should
have, so I didn't realize this bug report was referring to the trash
applet, not the desktop icon. (I do see the same issue, though, with
the desktop trash icon: it's shown as empty when it actually contains
something). My workaround (comment #5) only works for the desktop trash
icon, not the panel icon.

2012-10-05 Thread Mike Kupfer
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 861267 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/861267

Hrm, I'm still seeing this issue (icon shows empty trash, even though it
contains 2 files) with today's 12.10 beta bits (xfdesktop4
4.10.0-1ubuntu1, thunar 1.4.0-1ubuntu2). So either 861267 was
incorrectly marked fixed, or this is not a duplicate of 861267.

What's really annoying is that when I open up the Trash, I can see the 2
files, and I can Restore them, but the empty trash operation is grayed
out.

This is trivial for me to reproduce: delete a file in Thunar, then log
out and login again.

Minor correction about empty trash: it's grayed out if I right-click
on the trash icon or if I right-click on the Trash widget in the

[Bug 1032035] Re: BUG: unable to handle kernel paging request at 000000ffffff7ff9; RIP: 0010:[ffffffff8117b5ee] [ffffffff8117b5ee] poll_freewait+0x8e/0xe0

2012-09-04 Thread Mike Kupfer
when the crash occurs, what impact does this have?

It depends on which process the failure was detected in.

If it's Nautilus, I just have to do something to restart Nautilus (e.g.,
click on Activities and run Nautilus from the Favorites bar). And if I
don't really need Nautilus at the moment, I can continue working without
having Nautilus running.

If it's gnome-shell, it looks like I have to power cycle. The display
has gone into text mode (white letters on black background), and I can't
switch into a different tty using ctrl-alt-function key.

2012-08-13 Thread Mike Kupfer
I agree that putting-the-CD-in-after-unlocking is the more likely
scenario, so I'm fine with pursuing that one.

I should point out, though, that since my last update, I've been able
to cause an oops with this scenario. (I've attached the relevant
syslog.)

The scenario was

- unlock the display and do not click on the Network disconnected
notification window that appears on the bottom of the display. (For
some reason this notification window does not go away after some
time. It stays around until I click on it.)
- do some work with XEmacs
- insert a CD
- right-click on the CD icon on the desktop

I then rebooted and tried the same scenario, but this time clicking on
the notification window (to make it go away) before doing work in
XEmacs. I then inserted the CD and right-clicked on the CD icon.
This time Nautilus died.

I'm particularly interested in scenarios that cause an oops, because
they take more time to recover from and are more likely to lead to
lost work.

2012-08-08 Thread Mike Kupfer
So, if you wait to put the CD in after you unlock the screen from a
suspend resume, then try to view the CD with Nautilus, is the oops
reproducible?

I don't get an oops, but Nautilus dies with the BUG: Bad page map
error (syslog attached).

2012-08-04 Thread Mike Kupfer
I'm afraid I was unable to reproduce the problem with the Lucid
(10.04.4) liveCD.

I've also noticed that I cannot reproduce the problem if the CD is in
the drive and mounted when I suspend the computer.

OTOH, I can reproduce the problem if I put the CD in the drive, wait for
it to mount, eject the CD, suspend the computer, resume the computer,
and then put the CD back in the drive. Latest syslog is attached; see
the BUG messages starting at 11:20:17. (Again, this is with GNOME
shell, not Compiz/Unity.)

And just for the record, I can't reproduce the problem using a Xubuntu
session.

2012-08-04 Thread Mike Kupfer
Just to be clear, when you say GNOME shell, you are referring to the
package:

All my references to GNOME shell (including the original report and the
test mentioned in comment #4) refer to

$ apt-cache policy gnome-shell
gnome-shell:
  Installed: 3.2.2.1-0ubuntu0.1
  Candidate: 3.2.2.1-0ubuntu0.1
  Version table:
 *** 3.2.2.1-0ubuntu0.1 0
500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ oneiric-updates/universe amd64
Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
 3.2.0-0ubuntu1 0
500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ oneiric/universe amd64 Packages

I'm not sure when I'll be upgrading the system to Precise. It's my
primary desktop, so I need to find a big enough chunk of free time such
that I can recover if something goes wrong.

If there's a GNOME3 PPA for Oneiric that it would be helpful for me to
test against, I'm willing to try that.

[Bug 1032035] Re: crash shortly after resuming from suspend and inserting CD, using GNOME shell

2012-08-02 Thread Mike Kupfer
@Christopher: I'm not sure I understand your question. I discovered the
problem on Oneiric (3.0.0-23-generic #39 kernel) last night. I've got
kernels going back to 3.0.0-12, in case you'd like me to try to
reproduce the failure on any of them. But this particular box has never
had anything other than Oneiric on it, and it's only recently that I've
been using GNOME shell.

[Bug 1032035] Re: crash shortly after resuming from suspend and inserting CD, using GNOME shell

2012-08-02 Thread Mike Kupfer
The next oldest kernel that I have is 3.0.0-22.36. That did not crash,
but Nautilus died with a series of bad page map errors.

I also tried the 3.0.0-20.34 and 3.0.0-12.20 kernels. The -20 kernel
failed with unable to handle kernel paging request. With the -12
kernel, Nautilus died with a series of bad page map errors.

I've attached today's syslog, which has more complete error text for the
-20 and -12 tests.

I'll give the Lucid CD image a try, though if it fails to reproduce I'm
not sure what conclusion can be drawn. I'm only able to reproduce the
problem with the GNOME session (GNOME shell). I don't see the problem
with Unity/Compiz.

[Bug 1032035] [NEW] crash shortly after resuming from suspend and inserting CD, using GNOME shell

2012-08-01 Thread Mike Kupfer
Public bug reported:

I seem to have found a reproducible way to crash my ZaReason AMD Breeze:
login to a GNOME 3 session, suspend (to RAM) and resume, then insert a
CD into the internal drive, then unlock the screen, then try to view the
CD with Nautilus. I'm 3-for-3 in causing a failure this way. The first
2 times were with the 3.0.0-23-generic #39 kernel, the 3rd time was with
3.0.0-22-generic #36. (Well, the failure on the -22 kernel wasn't
really a crash, but I did get a series of Bad page map errors in
/var/log/syslog tied to Nautilus.) I tried once to reproduce the crash
using Unity on the 3.0.0-23-generic #39 kernel but did not have any
problems.

The crash message varies. The first crash was

unable to handle kernel paging request at 00ff7ff9

with the process in question being gnome-shell. The second crash was

nautilus: Corrupted page table at address 18012e8

[Bug 1032035] Re: crash shortly after resuming from suspend and inserting CD, using GNOME shell

2012-08-01 Thread Mike Kupfer
I'm attaching a copy of /var/log/syslog, which has a copy of all the
failure messages. In the case of the 3rd failure, I still had my GNOME
session. In the first 2 failures, I got dropped to some text display
and had to power cycle.

2012-06-27 Thread Mike Kupfer
As far as I know, the versions that are installed from source are
correctly configured. I do have a wrapper script, though, for invoking
XEmacs. I'll take a look at the postinstall script later this week to
see if my wrapper could be confusing the postinstall script.

While updating to the latest bits (including a kernel update from

the vboxguest problem be related to the failure to generate the

To clarify my question in comment #14, I'm wondering if there was
problem with vboxguest that was hidden in the original upgrade logs, and

2012-03-11 Thread Mike Kupfer
Okay, I took another stab at doing an upgrade in my VM. It still fails
in the same was as before.

I've attached 2 logs.

reinstall-20120311.log has the results from the steps listed in comment
#5.

configure-20120311.log has some debugging output from dpkg
--configure. The first set of output is from

  /usr/bin/sudo dpkg --configure --debug=2 linux-image-3.2.0-18-generic

The second set of output is from the same command, but after I hacked
the postinstall script (set $DEBUG=1).

2012-03-11 Thread Mike Kupfer
In comment #10, that should have been same way as before.

I don't understand kernel packaging/installation, but Googling suggests
the following is useful information:

ubuntu-vb$ df -h /
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/sda115G 5.3G 8.8G 38% /
ubuntu-vb$ df -h /boot
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/sda115G 5.3G 8.8G 38% /

Ah. Google also suggested

$ sudo update-initramfs -k 3.2.0-18-generic -c -v

and that fixed things.

[Bug 907168] Re: [ 3.0.0-14 regression ] Radeon 3200 GPU blank screen on resume

2012-03-10 Thread Mike Kupfer
I've done several successful suspend/resumes with the 3.3rc6 kernel,
using Xubuntu, Ubuntu, and Ubuntu 2D sessions. No failed resumes. I
think it likely that I would have triggered the blank-screen bug at
least once if I had been running the 3.0.0.16 kernel during that time.

FWIW, I did have one failed suspend, where the system appeared to go
into an S1 sleep (monitor on standby, but fan and power light still on).
That required power cycling to get out of. I suspect it's not relevant
for the purposes of this bug, but I thought I'd mention it.

[Bug 907168] Re: [ 3.0.0-14 regression ] Radeon 3200 GPU blank screen on resume

2012-03-07 Thread Mike Kupfer
Okay, I've installed and booted the 3.3.0rc6 kernel. Since the problem
is intermittent, I'll wait a few days before reporting back.

There was a DKMS error message when installing the test kernel, and I'm
unable to start one of my VirtualBox VMs when the host is running the
3.3.0 kernel.

I assume I'll need to boot the standard Oneiric kernel if I want to run
that VM...? That might limit my testing some, but I'll see what I can
do.

[Bug 946100] Re: package linux-image-3.2.0-17-generic 3.2.0-17.27 failed to install/upgrade: ErrorMessage: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 2

2012-03-06 Thread Mike Kupfer
@Joseph

I did. IIRC, the apt-get install -f failed (see 946113), the apt-get
clean finished okay, and the apt-get update failed partway through
with complaints that it couldn't download files that it needed. I may
have a typescript file saved in the VM, if you'd like details. At this
point I started getting errors about / being read-only, so I rebooted
and redid the apt-get update, which succeeded. I then tried the
reinstall, which failed, as described in comment #6.

In hindsight, I think I should have uninstalled update-manager and
update-manager-core after the failure of apt-get install -f, and then
retried the install -f, but I didn't think of that until much later.

By the way, I suspect that this VM is sufficiently hosed that I'm not
concerned about trying to recover from the current problems. If there's
value to Ubuntu in doing further troubleshooting, I'm happy to help with
that. Otherwise, I'm willing to revert to my last 11.10 snapshot and
redo the upgrade when I get some time.

Unable to reinstall the -17 kernel, as it has been replaced by the -18

Unable to upgrade to the -18 kernel, because apt-get upgrade bails out
because of 946113.

Now apt-get and Synaptic both bail out with E: Internal Error, No file
name for libselinux1. I don't see how to proceed here.

2012-03-03 Thread Mike Kupfer
After resuming from a suspend, the display for my desktop occasionally
stays in power-save mode. I can ssh into the box, but neither mouse
movement or keyboard activity brings the display to life. I don't
believe it's a problem with those peripherals, as the NumLock LED
responds to presses of the NumLock key.

I see the [drm:drm_mode_getfb] *ERROR* invalid framebuffer id message
in /var/log/syslog.

[Bug 541595] Re: [Master] package failed to install/upgrade: package is already installed and configured

2012-03-03 Thread Mike Kupfer
Just ran into this upgrading from 11.10 to 12.04 Beta 1. I got a pop-up
complaining that the installation of update-manager-core had failed
because of a problem with exc_tests.py (I'll file a separate bug for
that), then later I got a separate pop-up with the already installed
and configured message. This was in a 32-bit VirtualBox VM.

[Bug 946100] [NEW] package linux-image-3.2.0-17-generic 3.2.0-17.27 failed to install/upgrade: ErrorMessage: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 2

2012-03-03 Thread Mike Kupfer
Public bug reported:

Upgrading from 11.10 to 12.04 Beta 1, I got a pop-up saying

  Could not install 'linux-image-3.2.0-17-generic'

subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit
status 2

I was unable to retrieve any additional information from the log window.

This was in a 32-bit VirtualBox VM, running on an amd64 host (also
running 11.10).

I looked in /boot/grub, and it looked like the new kernel was registered
with grub, so I chanced a restart. Booting the new kernel gave me a
blank screen. After waiting a bit, I shut down the VM and booted the
3.0.0-16 kernel from Oneiric, which is what's being used to submit this
bug report.

[Bug 946113] [NEW] upgrade to 12.04 Beta 1 update-manager-core install error because of symlink size change

2012-03-03 Thread Mike Kupfer
Public bug reported:

a pop-up with the following error messages

  Could not install '/var/cache/apt/archives/update-manager-

[Bug 754358] Re: Tomboy.exe crashed disabling spell checking: with SIGABRT in g_type_check_instance_cast()

2012-03-02 Thread Mike Kupfer
Saw this twice today on 11.10 on a VirtualBox VM (32-bit).

Interestingly, the assertion is different both times.

First failure:

[Bug 924046] [NEW] xemacs crashes when using MH-E to view message with PNG attachment

2012-01-30 Thread Mike Kupfer
Public bug reported:

An email that contains a PNG attachment can crash XEmacs 21.4.22 when viewed
using MH-E.  I'll attach a C stacktrace from gdb and a sample message.  I've
reproduced this on x86_64 and i686 systems, both running Ubuntu 11.10. This
appears to be the same as XEmacs issue570
(http://tracker.xemacs.org/XEmacs/its/issue570), for which there is a patch at
http://list-archive.xemacs.org/pipermail/xemacs-patches/2009-September/007961.html.
The fix has been applied to the dev version of XEmacs 21.4, and a new release
is planned soon, but I don't know if it will be in time for Precise.

[Bug 924046] Re: xemacs crashes when using MH-E to view message with PNG attachment

2012-01-30 Thread Mike Kupfer
I verified the fix by building 21.4.22 from the original source tarball,
reproducing the crash, applying the patch, and trying to reproduce the
crash.

Here's the stack information from gdb:

why virtualbox occasionally segfaults while shutting down an Ubuntu

Forgot to mention--the guest additions are installed on the guest. And
FWIW it's actually an Xubuntu 11.10 guest, not Ubuntu.

[Bug 868879] [NEW] no scrollbar in Details pane

2011-10-05 Thread Mike Kupfer
Public bug reported:

While Update Manager is processing the downloaded packages, I can click
on Details to get the detailed log from dpkg. I expected the Details
pane to have a scrollbar, but I couldn't find one. I thought this might
be because I couldn't find the overlay scrollbar area, but even after
disabling overlay scrollbars I'm still not seeing a scrollbar.

I once expanded the window that showed the progress bar and Details, and
I was able to see some of the earlier details text in the Details pane
(text that had scrolled off the top). But then I wasn't able to see new
Details text as additional packages were processed. I was able to get
back to the bottom of the Details text by doing a click-and-hold in the
Details pane and then dragging the mouse down, past the bottom edge of
the window.
