[Bug 1532226] Re: No menu bar in gtk apps on fresh boot

2016-04-23 Thread Mikkel Kamstrup Erlandsen
Interestingly enough I can not get menus working at all for gtk apps now
by restarting unity-panel-service - which have otherwise worked for me
before...

[Bug 1532226] Re: No menu bar in gtk apps on fresh boot

2016-04-23 Thread Mikkel Kamstrup Erlandsen
Marco, Sebastian: Attached log of a buggy case I got after a few
restarts (Marco's ppa enabled). Everything was working for many sessions
until this.

This case was not 100% identical to the other times I had missing menus,
but so similar that it's prolly related. Now the menu headers are there
in the panel, but clicking them does not unfold the menu. After
starting/stopping a few gtk apps I sometimes don't have any menus at all
for them, or alternatively, get the unclickable menu headers.

Firefox consistently fully working normal menus.

2016-04-06 Thread Mikkel Kamstrup Erlandsen
To further clarify: I can still find menu entries by searching for them
in the HUD (fx. in Nautilus press Alt and type "folder" and select the
"Create folder" menu item there). So I guess the menus are still
exported somehow, just not being rendered.

[Bug 271272] Re: updatedb should be weekly, not daily

2014-02-12 Thread Mikkel Kamstrup Erlandsen
locate/updatedb/findutils is *destroying* my laptop on a daily basis.
Recent Ubuntu releases (in particular after 12.04) seem to have gotten
particularly suceptible to UI hangs under heavy IO load. This makes
Unity (and all other desktop systems I've tried) unusable for ~20
minutes each day.

[Bug 1184451] Re: Ubuntu 13.10 random screen freeze while Normal OS activites

2013-11-19 Thread Mikkel Kamstrup Erlandsen
I can second what I mentioned elsewhere: This is *not* related to
nouveau. Nor is it related to Compiz effects.

I get these symptoms maybe 10-20 per day: Screen freezes. Music/sound
continues to work. Can move mouse but not click. Keyboard unresponsive.
After maybe 10s the system comes back up.

The hangs are seemingly random. Maybe slightly more likely to happen
when system is under load. But can happen at any given time.

I tried under Xfce, Gnome, and Unity. All environments display the
symptom. And frankly, it's driving me nuts.

(My system is all Intel, with latest Ubuntu 13.10 packages)

[Bug 1020115] Re: Partial and release upgrade buttons don't work

2012-07-03 Thread Mikkel Kamstrup Erlandsen
If it is a general thing that g_spawn_*() doesn't work with pkexec then
it suggests that the bug is in glib or pk I think.

Is this not a bug everywhere we launch desktop files? The
g_app_info_launch() family, which is used extensively throughout Unity,
just uses G_SPAWN_SEARCH_PATH, but would also require
G_SPAWN_DO_NOT_REAP_CHILD as seen in Bilal's branch. I wouldn't want to
add manual reaping everywhere we do this...

[Bug 868423] Re: Launcher - Workspace switcher should not be in the Launcher by default

2012-03-28 Thread Mikkel Kamstrup Erlandsen
An update on the situation: To my understanding the intention is
definitely not to kill workspaces (and they should be fixed for
keyboards as well now). The thing is that the current ws switcher button
in the launcher is highly dangerous to novice users. I've on two
different occasions watched family members being trapped in it, unable
to figure out how to get out.

I wrote a proposal on the unity-dev list on how to do a long term
solution of the more general problem of giving access to some of the
more advanced features of the wm/system: See the RFC: syslets thread
here https://lists.launchpad.net/unity-dev/msg00438.html

[Bug 868423] Re: Launcher - Workspace switcher should not be in the Launcher by default

2012-02-21 Thread Mikkel Kamstrup Erlandsen
Generally I very much like the idea of having advanced window management
(or other tools) represent themselves as small apps even though they
may really be a shim for some deeper hooks in the shell/wm.

My concern, for Precise in particular, is that we don't have time to
implement it nicely. To avoid spaghettifying the code (both compiz,
unities, and lenses) we'd need some sensible abstraction and
encapsulation.

Bottom line: Unity relies on some subtle ordering mechanisms that are
really not a part of the Dee API. In a fartherly moment of forgiveness I
made sure that DeeTransaction respected these assumptions.

[Bug 924353] Re: New Dash Home has different recent apps/files than lenses

2012-02-02 Thread Mikkel Kamstrup Erlandsen
The hunch right now is that certain combinations of clear+append on a
DeeTransaction can result in a reversal of order. This hinges on the
fact that the primary difference between the home screen and lens views
is that the lens view goes through a DeeTransaction.

(for the record - the correct ordering is seen on the home screen. the
lens view has the same items, but reversed)

similar prospects. Wrt g-ir-doc-tool, I am all for supporting whatever
upstream GI choose, but last I checked, and what I hear as well, was
that development on it stagnated?

[Bug 773197] Re: The search engine should not be accent sensitive

2012-01-30 Thread Mikkel Kamstrup Erlandsen
To clear up potential confusion: The current state is that the
DeeIndex/Analyzer frametwork can do transliteration of diacritics (and
everything else for that matter (ICU FTW!). There is still work to be
done in the lenses and other consumers to connect the wires before we
can close this bug on all projects.

Yep. The colon is the thing. Just toyed around with some .desktop files
with white space in them and it worked quite well. Marking as a dupe of
bug 916201.

[Bug 885738] Re: Dash - Remove Dash Home shortcut icons

2012-01-20 Thread Mikkel Kamstrup Erlandsen
** Description changed:

The eight icons displayed on the Dash Home screen before a search is
performed need to be removed. They no longer serve a relevant purpose
with the Dash and Launcher performing all required launching functions.
Additionally user testing has shown that they are a cause of confusion
and difficulty, as they launch programs but lack the other features
inherent to the other icons that are present in the dash.

  Desired Solution:
  - Remove the 8 large icon links on the Dash Home

Implement the following two options for user testing, with a means to
toggle between the two options for user testing:

  - Option 1: Replace with a default view (as used by the other Lenses)
showing the following category headers: Recently Used Apps (excludes
apps currently in the Launcher), Recent Files, and Recent Downloads.
The icons used for the category headers should be the same as used for
the equivalent category headers in the Lenses (except, the music lens
should collate Songs and Albums into one Music category).

  - Option 2: Do not replace the icons with anything, the Dash should
  vertically resize.

  ---

  IMPLEMENTATION STATUS:
- Attached branches ready for *preliminary* testing, before I put them up for
review.
+ Everything mostly working. Except for the first item below we are about ready
to merge-propose:

- There are a few known issues at this point:
+ - Add a few more tests cases to the rather complex HomeLens class

- - i18n of user visible labels missing because UnityCore does not have
- i18n yet
-
- - Sorting of lenses/categories. apps.lens should go first. Currently random.
-   Planning a gsettings key with priorities
-
- - Activate correct hit, waiting for search.finished() and correct seqnum
-
- - When first shown the dash home screen doesn't show anything
+ - Music lens to collate results into one category (wip by mhr3)

  - Recent Apps doesn't filter out running apps that are not favorites
+ (wip by mhr3)

  - Unity2d enablement (should be easy, by design of the HomeLens class)

I don't think we need anything clever here - the obvious question is:
Why do we run these handlers when not rendering bubbles? NOSD should
just uninstall the timeouts when the queue becomes empty.

[Bug 645130] Re: notify-osd busy polling consumes CPU and drains battery

2012-01-07 Thread Mikkel Kamstrup Erlandsen
Looking at bubble.c it does appear to be the case that timeouts are
removed when the Bubble instances are disposed. So either we only have
a power surge when bubbles are on screen (which is probably not a big
issue then), or the Bubble objects are leaked, keeping the timeouts
going?

[Bug 833610] Re: Impossible to find Banshee in Unity on 11.10 by typing Music

2011-12-06 Thread Mikkel Kamstrup Erlandsen
unity-lens-applications indexes the X-GNOME-Keywords field, so that
seems like a possibility.

Relatedly; I don't think it is a good idea to match in the Categories
field via text searches (even though it's a trivial tweak in u-l-a). The
Categories contains semantic data and not user content (and is not
translated).

We could potentially index the Name of the Menu tags in which we
find the apps and attach that to the application. This will just be
pushing the problem around though (Banshee is listed in the Multimedia
Menu element).

[Bug 810412] Re: searching for generic keywords in unity lens doesn't yeld (all) results

2011-12-06 Thread Mikkel Kamstrup Erlandsen
I am not overly keen on using the description from the software center.
As it stands many of the descriptions there are of poor quality to
normal users. They seem to be written to other packagers. This can
change of course. (and are those descriptions translated?)

A simpler solution would be to just use X-GNOME-Keywords which we do
support in unity-lens-applications (as I also mentioned in bug 833610).

** Description changed:

on unity 11.04,11.10 seraching for game, internet or such generic
keywords in the lenses does not show all relevant applications..
this is a showstopper bug for me and other people i talked to
i understand the difficulty of insuffiecient metadata for applications but
escpecially for newbys and non-geeks this is at least a big MUST.
You DO have descriptions and categories in software center.. can't these info
be used in the lens too?
+
+ Desired solution:
+ Stick to the X-GNOME-Keywords field in the .desktop files, but improve the
indexed data.
+ - Minimally: Assure that key apps have good keywords in their packages
+ - Best: Get the word out to have upstreams put good data in there. Help
upstreams getting this done.

[Bug 828582] Re: Dash: very high latency responding to input

2011-11-23 Thread Mikkel Kamstrup Erlandsen
Right now Unity itself has a pretty high timeout before sending queries
to the lenses. Michal is working on improving the lens side query
handling in various ways by tweaking libunity. This should make it
possible to do the timeouts inside libunity, that is on the lens-side of
things, allowing the lenses themselves to tweak the timeout to their
needs.

Concretely, I propose:

 * Lower the timeout in Unity to something very low
 * Implement another timeout for dispatching LensSearch instances in libunity
 * Make that timeout in libunity a writable property for Scopes to override to
suit their needs
