[Bug 694224] Re: Synchronous notifications briefly steal focus

2015-09-16 Thread Mirco Müller
This lost-focus is not caused by notify-osd itself.

You can verify this by running Dylan's provided python-script and
triggering lp:notify-osd/examples/icon-value.py in another terminal
(with a "sleep 10" before that, so you've enough time to focus Dylan's
running python-script and its output). icon-value.py is triggering the
exact same type of notification that a regular volume-up/down would be
made of.

What's actually stealing the focus is the process handling the
multimedia-keys input. That's the media-keys-manager part (libmedia-
keys.so) of lp:gnome-settings-daemon iirc.

[Bug 1476664] Re: not possible to answer call when low battery indicator is shown

2015-07-26 Thread Mirco Müller
Greetings Petar!

I'm not sure I fully understand the state your phone is in, when this
happens to you. From my understanding it appears you might not be aware
of the collapse/expand feature of snap-decision notifications of unity8.
This happens when there is more than one snap-decision notification on-
screen at the same time.

I've tried to replicate as much of your situation as I can take away
from your bug-description and made a video showing off the way how snap-
decision notifications behave and can be interacted with...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FwPC6n5w9W0

Have a look at that video. Does that provide a solution to your issue?
Or if not could you give a more detailed description of how to reproduce
it... a video of the issue you run into would be even better. Thanks in
advance!

[Bug 1008182] Re: Provide a link to close notifications

2015-04-16 Thread Mirco Müller
The interaction-design (or rather non-interaction design) of desktop-
notifications wrt to NotifyOSD (used in conjuction with unity7 on the
current desktop) does explicitly not provide any means to allow/force
the user to act on them (e.g. close them).

The notification-bubbles do not get in your way (they are click-through
and defocus if you hover the mouse-pointer over them) to not break any
workflow and interrupt your current actions (e.d. clicking button,
reading text) with any UI-element, which might be below the
notification-bubbles.

That's why it's marked as Won't Fix. For reference, please read
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/NotifyOSD#Rationale

The new notification-system (for unity8) revisits notifications and their
interaction-design. Currently unity8 is only used on devices such as phones and
tablets, but will make its way to the desktop too (keyword: convergence). As a
glimpse of how it's going to look, you can watch...

[Bug 1422711] Re: SIM pin notification breaks notification positioning

2015-02-17 Thread Mirco Müller
The proposed fix in the MP works. Now I need to see with mzanetti (or
any other reviewer), if we're all happy with the proposed solution.

The visual glitch, when the SIM pin-entry fullscreen notification,
opens, is due to the way the custom UI is injected into the
notification. The interpretation of the hint-injected UnityMenuModel -
transporting the SIM pin-entry UI - kicks in only after the notification
as such is started being processed. How to avoid that delay, I don't
know yet. I'm not even sure if that's technically possible at all.

The clean separation of notifications and dialogs will bring and end to
such issues though.

[Bug 1384730] Re: [notifications] remove combo button from incoming call snap

2014-10-23 Thread Mirco Müller
This is actually two-fold... first the notification-frontend
(notification-plugin in unity8) needs to change the used UI-elements for
additional actions ( 2 actions).

Secondly, the telephony-service needs to change the actions passed to a
snap-decision notification used for the incoming call-use-case.

I'll update the bug to affect the correct packages.

2014-10-23 Thread Mirco Müller
For sake of completeness/correctness... the snap-decision notification
triggered by telephony-service does not use more than two actions...
accept and reject. Thus it does not make use of the additional
ComboButton-feature of the notification-system.

What Olga is refering to, are the synthetic notification-system tests
and examples used to exercise all the different use-cases the
notification-system is currently designed to support.

Why is lp:dialer-app linked to this bug and not lp:telephony-service?
The latter is the one which creates and triggers the incoming-call snap-
decision notification.

With the upcoming support for the SwipeToAct widget in notifications,
which is specifically designed to solve this very UX-bug, all that needs
to be added to telephony-service is:

2014-10-16 Thread Mirco Müller
Selene, you a right about the issue with the volume-notification.
Matthew mentioned this too in comment #3. But I suggest opening a new
bug for the sync. volume notification over sound-indicator as the
initial background-color contrast of this bug is fixed.

Let's not have bug-entries organically morph and become moving targets.

[Bug 1378618] Re: volume notification looks bad when an indicator is open

2014-10-10 Thread Mirco Müller
You are all not fully correct.

Current notifications in unity8 trunk have snap-decisions using dark on
bright. All other notification-types use bright on dark. These color-
schemes are static currently.

The unity8 branch (lp:~macslow/unity8/synchronous-notification) up for
review - introducing the synchronous notification type - also
introduces dynamically adapting color-schemes for all non-snap-decision
notification types. Thus ephemeral, interactive and synchronous
notification-types are able to dynamically switch from bright on dark
(default) to dark on bright based on two cases...

1.) They show up if one or more snap-decision notification is currently
shown

2.) They show up if an indicator is visible.

Please also see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rwEYLXNaL0Q (esp. at
0:23).

It is true that the notification-system can't monitor the average
background color of what is behind it. Gaining that capability is very
unlikely - now and in the future - but this new branch is trying to
solve conceptual UX-flaws for RTM as much as possible. This is certainly
better than what we have currently in unity8 trunk. It will avoid
getting several user-complains of dark on dark situations. So this bug
is implicitly fixed in lp:~macslow/unity8/synchronous-notification
already.

[Bug 1358343] Re: [notifications] too easy to answer a call by accident

2014-10-10 Thread Mirco Müller
Just had the meeting with Olga and James to answer the above mentioned
questions. Results from the meeting are...

- sizes, margins and colors of the current implementation-state are
accoding to design

- transition animations are provided now

- used icons in design-mockup are wrong, implementation is using correct
icons

- we have to introduce a new hint for this swipe-to-act button for the
use in incoming-call snap-decision notifications, triggering incoming-
call snap-decision in telephony-app needs to be adapted (I'll also do
that), other snap-decision use-cases are left untouched by this change

- the initial red/green UbuntuShape with the phone-icons will gradually
fade out and finally be replaced with the outlined version the moment
the slider is fully covering that area

- we agreed to keep the final state (of the outlined UbuntuShape with
the symbolic icon) despite it being only visible for a very brief moment

Still for the warning-at-75% stop-gap suggestion, I need a design-

[Bug 1378920] Re: Synchronous sound notifications pause video

I think that notifications should play such sounds, since we now have
the sound-hint support. Thus I agree with saviq, that incoming
call/message jingles should be offloaded to notifications to be
played.

Playback in snap-decision type notifications would loop sound-playback
until said notification is closed. All other notification-types would
play back only a single iteration of the attached sound.

[Bug 1232633] Re: [system] Changing volume doesn't show feedback on the phone

2014-09-24 Thread Mirco Müller
This warning is only shown to the user (on Android) if headphones are
plugged it.

We too could display such a warning by triggering a corresponding snap-
decision from indicator-sound. With our current notification-system we
have all needed means for this in place. But what icon, summary- and
body-text should it display? What labels should be used on the buttons.
How should the phone (indicator-sound) behave if the user selects
Cancel? How long should it (indicator-sound) remember that user-
choice? Until headphones are unplugged and plugged in again? This needs
some good thought and user-journey from Design.

What we need on the side of indicator-sound is a way to determine, if a
headphone is currently plugged into the phone or not. I don't know the
audio-stack well enough to answer this.

[Bug 1306769] Re: pinlock snap decision potentially allows malicious app to gain access to user PIN and Passcode

2014-09-24 Thread Mirco Müller
Extracting the whole snap-decision functionality into a separate dialog
service, which would be easier to isolate, feels like a too large effort
for rtm, considering the other fires we've to put out still.

Admittedly I've not done a thorough analysis of the expected effort yet.
But it will require major changes in lp:unity-notifications, lp:unity8,
all the numerous snap-decision using apps, the new dialog-service itself
and of course new Design guidelines for how such a service would fit in
the current notification-concept.

Before such an effort should be started the exact functional
requirements need to be ironed out, so we avoid having to fix things up
as we implement it... like it happened with snap-decision notifications,
which got loaded with more and more typical dialog-like features as we
went along.

All of the above will additionally also require new qml/AP-tests and of
course user- and integration-testing.

That's all I can say in a short comment.

Whatever the solution is going to be, please remember, that the
notification-daemon does not have any domain- or context-knowledge about
the notification (and its contents) it receives. So any suppress-
filtering will have to be based solely on the notification-type: snap-

synchronous).

[Bug 1369438] [NEW] Class 2 SMS reply-options are cut off by 2-line body-text limit

2014-09-15 Thread Mirco Müller
Public bug reported:

I was just trying up the balance of my Vodafone CallYa SIM-card by
sending the dial-code *100#. The reply from my provider, which is
presented as a snap-decision notification (with a text-entry), had its
body-text cut short by the newly enforced 2-line limit of body-text.

Because of this text-limit, I was not able to read the whole set of
options (and associated numbers) usually presented in this snap-
decisions' body-text. Thus I was not able to see which numbers I have to
enter to navigate the balance-related functions.

It is currently impossible to up the balance of my prepaid SIM-card due
to this bug.

[Bug 1334855] Re: [design] Can't use toolbar while notifications on screen

2014-09-11 Thread Mirco Müller
So there are no ephemeral notifications anymore?! I do not see them
being refered to in any way in the design-document. See...

www.youtube.com/watch?v=KI-uBmr_TNQt=1m30s

... for an example.

Ephemeral notifications are just that. Not interactive in any way and
just used to display not too important information to the user, which
can be missed by the user without any impact. They are a typical for
desktop/convergence settings.

[Bug 1334855] Re: Can't use toolbar while notifications on screen

2014-09-10 Thread Mirco Müller
Only snap-decisions are meant to be dismissable via swipe. Who connected
this bug to branch lp:~macslow/unity8/swipe-dismiss-snap-decisions ?

I do not agree with the current state of solution. The design-document
explicitly states only snap-decision notifications to be dismissable
(via swipe).

Before proceeding with a fix for this I would like to get a clear
guideline from Design for this non-snap-decision case. Thus marked as
Opinion for the moment.

[Bug 1366752] Re: Phone freezes for a moment when message notification appears

2014-09-09 Thread Mirco Müller
I don't seem to be running into any crash. Also I can't make out any
dbus timeouts in the *.log-files on the devices I tested this on. The
stutter is more striking, when a sound is attached to the notification.

Just from looking at the back- and frontend of the notification-system,
I don't know what could be done to eliminate the jerkiness. I think a
closer look is needed a bit deeper in the stack (qtmir, audio-playback).

[Bug 1354406] Re: PIN-locked phone becomes unresponsive after simultaneous alarms

2014-08-13 Thread Mirco Müller
I tried to reproduce your step-by-step instructions on my N4 (image 187)
and could not cause any entered event to trigger anything. I've even set
everything to us/english, because I thought the timezone-settings might
cause a problem, but even with us/english timezones nothing happened.

I've my Google-account set up to sync calendar and contacts and
everything else you describe. No calendar-event triggers anything for
me. I must be exposed to a different bug here, so can't help atm.

The bug is actually in lp:unity-notifications. The more-than-one-
notification-per-app-in-queue guard does not work and that's causing
this issue. I'm currently working on fixing this in lp:unity-

[Bug 1308011] Re: SIM unlock UI shifts a half-gridunit when starting and breaks easily

2014-07-04 Thread Mirco Müller
regarding 1.) The attached branch addresses the gap-issue. The
ReferenceError of LockScreen.qml no longer happens. The anchor-warning
concerning Column can't be avoided without breaking the whole layout of
notifications.

regarding 2.) This is probably due to the menu-model on DBus going
missing upon Ctrl-C. If someone shows me how to catch that inside QML, I
should be able to gracefully exit the notification.

regarding 3.) I've never seen that or been able to reproduce such a
lockup.

[Bug 1331551] Re: Some design fixes for boot animation spinner

2014-06-25 Thread Mirco Müller
I looked at the code again and also measured placement and size by hand
with ruler, pen and paper on the N4 and N10... on both devices the logo-
spinner of the boot-animation is correctly centered. The size on both
devices also looks to be physically the same... thus the GU-based
scaling does work. Otherwise it would be smaller on the N10 compared to
the N4.

I'd say this in invalid.

Re: [Bug 1295762] Re: snap decision timeout needs to be determined by the requesting app

2014-06-11 Thread Mirco Müller

I think that's unnecessary for the same reason I thought introducing hints for
 snap decision actions was unnecessary.
The hint x-canonical-snap-decisions is an indicating hint, e.g.
like the standard body hint, and used to point out that there are
certain rules enforced upon the use of actions, put forth by UX-design,
which deviate from the FDO-standard. Therefore I do not regard
x-canonical-snap-decisions as being unnecessary.

Furthermore hints are the designated means to introduce new features (or
different behaviour).

It's unlikely that developers have a
problem understanding that the timeout only applies to a specific kind of
 notification.
Being explicit rather than implicit avoids misunderstanding and
possible false-positive bug-reports due to that.

Adding additional hints only increases the complexity of the API and makes it
harder to switch between different kinds of notifications.
By design every introduced notification-type serves a very specific
purpose, that differs in behaviour, visuals and interaction. Thus
switching between different notification-types is not a common thing to
do for a developer, unless UX-requirements change later on.

[Bug 1295762] Re: snap decision timeout needs to be determined by the requesting app

2014-06-05 Thread Mirco Müller
I disagree. The x-canonical-snap-decisions-timeout is intentionally
used in favour of the Freedesktop timeout feature, to indicate very
clearly, that is is only applicable to snap-decisions notifications.

Using the regular parameter of the Notify() method - and only applying
it snap-decisioin notifications - would be misleading, because the
intention of that timeout parameter is to be affecting all kinds of
notifications.

[Bug 1315419] Re: Timeout when trying to enter a long passphrase

2014-05-06 Thread Mirco Müller
There's a feature-request from Design to allow apps to control the
timeout duration of a notification. See https://bugs.launchpad.net
/unity-notifications/+bug/1295762. This will facilitate addressing the
issue of this bug. So once #1295762 is fixed, timeout issues can be
addressed on a case-by-case basis, instead of having to increase
timeouts globally for selected cases.

In the long run any dialog-like UI should be moved out of the domain of
notifications.

[Bug 1028115] Re: Gdk.cairo_region_create_from_surface() raises an error in GI

2014-04-13 Thread Mirco Müller
Just want to add my 2 cents of information from messing with this
subject over the weekend...

To properly use cairo.Region() in Python one needs at least pycairo
1.8.10 (1.10.0 is current) for Python 3.x. For Python 2.x pycairo does
not support/implement cairo.Region().

I've an example implementing click-through using cairo.Region() and
cairo.RectangleInt() available here:
