[Bug 1480530] [NEW] Banshee stops playing

Banshee plays fine, then without intervention, stops playing. The UI
goes grey, and after a short while the application closes itself down.
OS is Ubuntu 12.04.5. Banshee is 2.4.1-3ubuntu1~precise3.

[Bug 1376494] Re: gedit hides mouse pointer when there is selected text

2014-11-20 Thread NickJ
I have this bug too but it also affected the keyboard, when typing every
few seconds some key presses would not register.

I installed ibus-gtk as recommended above and the problem has gone.

[Bug 1084047] [NEW] Unity fails to load

2012-11-28 Thread NickJ
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 12.10 x64 running on an NVIDIA 7800GTX

nvidia-experimental-310:
  Candidate: 310.14-0ubuntu1
  Version table:
 310.14-0ubuntu1 0
500 http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ quantal-updates/restricted
amd64 Packages

What I expected: A working desktop.

What happened: Unity did not load (no launcher, no dash), though the
desktop icons were all visible and mouse was working fine. Using right-
click - change Desktop Background I was able to access the settings and
under Displays it had 1 Laptop screen whereas I have 2x Dell
monitors (display was mirrored).

Reverted to 304.64 through X-SWAT and everything went back to normal.

Alvin I have no idea why you're so adamant this is related to bug
191119, both me an whoop have said the patch in bug 542210 have fixed
our problems. 191119 and 568193 don't even appear related.

[Bug 542210] Re: /boot destroyed during install even when formatting disabled (alternate installer)

2010-04-27 Thread NickJ
I can also confirm that my experience of the problem as detailed in bug
#560152 has been rectified with
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily/20100427.1/lucid-alternate-amd64.iso

- The 'unusable' bits of the partition no longer display
- There are no messages about partition tables changing, just that /boot and /
are going to be formatted
- Grub successfully installs to the MBR of both /dev/sda and /dev/sdb

Thanks to all

[Bug 560152] Re: installing lucid over existing software raid 1 does not work

2010-04-26 Thread NickJ
Me neither, in fact choosing Keep existing data for any partition
makes the partition tables corrupt and requires an e2fsck to fix. This
has happened to me on two computers, one has 2x 74Gb raptors split into
100Mb RAID1 for /boot, 15Gb RAID0 for / and the rest RAID0 for /home and
one has 4x WD640s split into 100Mb RAID1 for /boot, 15Gb RAID0 for / and
the rest RAID5 for /home. I have had to recover the /home partitions on
both using a Live Desktop version because despite selecting to not
format them, the following screen still says the partition tables are
due to be changed.

[Bug 560152] Re: installing lucid over existing software raid 1 does not work

2010-04-26 Thread NickJ
I've just gone through the setup routine for Karmic and on the page
after confirming the computer not to boot with degraded RAID, it doesn't
warn against any partitions having their structure changed and only says
that / and /boot are due to be formatted. This contrasts to Lucid where
it warns /, /boot and /home will have their partition tables changed,
and also mentioning that / and /boot will be formatted. Also noted using
the Live Desktop CD that the new / and /boot partitions created by
Lucid's setup routine ARE readable.

Karmic ISO: ubuntu-9.10-alternate-amd64.iso

Lucid ISO: ubuntu-10.04-rc-alternate-amd64.iso

At the moment, the only way I have to get a clean install of Lucid onto
my PC is to clean install Karmic first then upgrade.

Re: [Bug 234804] Re: cannot install Asus Xonar DX on 64-bit

2009-02-05 Thread NickJ
Hi,

Sorry for the lengthy delay - work got in the way - anyway, I've tested
Jaunty amd64 with the system and am happy, very happy, to report that
the soundcard now works perfectly!

Many thanks to all concerned.

 Hi NickJ,

Have you been able to test Intrepid at all? Does the issue still exist?
If so, care to give the latest pre-release of Jaunty a try -
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/jaunty/alpha-2/ . Please let us know
 your results. Thanks.

[Bug 234804] Re: cannot install Asus Xonar DX on 64-bit

2008-06-02 Thread NickJ
Latest discovery points to a problem with Hardy, not Alsa. My 64bit
Hardy installation is an in situ upgrade from Gutsy and appears to lack
the soundcore module specified as a prerequisite by the Alsa Project.
The 32bit Gutsy install, on which the Xonar is working, does possess the
module. Running apt-get install linux-ubuntu-modules has not solved
this problem.

[Bug 234804] Re: cannot install Asus Xonar DX on 64-bit

2008-06-02 Thread NickJ
So, next effort: reinstall 64 bit Hardy, cleanly from CD. modprobe
soundcore is now fine. Recompile Alsa from source, including - thank
you Daniel - the most recent snapshot. All source compiles without
error and installs likewise. alsamixer, however, returns:

ALSA lib control.c:874:(snd_ctl_open_conf) Cannot open shared library
/usr/lib/alsa-lib/libasound_module_ctl_pulse.so

alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such file or
directory

This despite reinstalling libasound2 (purge reinstall). The directory
/alsa-lib/, not surprisingly, does not contain the libasound module.

lspci still finds the card, so does alsaconf, but not aplay -- in other
words, Ubuntu knows the card is there, has the drivers available to run
it, but for some reason, cannot connect the two.

[Bug 234804] [NEW] cannot install Asus Xonar DX on 64-bit

2008-05-25 Thread NickJ
Public bug reported:

Linux ubuntu64 2.6.24-16-generic #1 SMP
Have compiled snd-virtuoso module for this soundcard.
Have followed all the instructions and recommendations on
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshooting?action=showredirect=DebuggingSoundProblems.
Have installed the same card, on the same box, but with separate harddrive, in
Ubuntu Gutsy 32bit (compiling from the same Alsa Project source) and Windows.
Every effort with Ubuntu Hardy 64bit has failed, including alsa packages in the
1.0.16 group and the Clemens Ladisch pre-release driver (alsa-driver-20080415).
aplay -l shows no soundcard. lspci -v shows the card. sudo modprobe
snd-virtuoso is successful. /etc/modules has the right module appended. The
right user appears in the sound group.
alsamixer returns the following: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No
such file or directory
I have attempted a purge and reinstall of linux-sound-base alsa-base
alsa-utils - this makes no difference.
alsaconf detects the card and completes successfully, but opening alsamixer
immediately afterwards gives the result noted above.
