[Bug 1495479] Re: Strange dimming effect when setting sRGB image as desktop background image and activating desktop icons

2018-06-07 Thread Nikita Yerenkov-Scott
Well, on Arch the issue, (as I said before) doesn't seem to be present.
However can't you just check yourself? It should be quite easy to
reproduce if it's still a bug. If it is, then as it says "Fix released"
for the upstream bug, then surely you can fix it downstream as well. And
if not, then we can close the bug!

@Robie, I run Arch now, so it would be best if someone else tested this,
otherwise if nobody is around other than me to test it then I will
happily do so in my QEMU VM. Just let me know if nobody gets back to you
about this in a while.

[Bug 1411637] Re: apt-get command line upgrade, to know when to restart

2018-01-24 Thread Nikita Yerenkov-Scott
Well, if you are doing this in the command-line, then generally it would
be seen as strange if something GUI wise popped up. And especially so
would it be useless if you were in the console with no GUI or you were
using apt as a dependency of another program. Then this popup might
become quite a nuisance.

[Bug 1543099] Re: Ability to disable Hot Corner

2018-01-24 Thread Nikita Yerenkov-Scott
** Description changed:

Though some may find it useful, I find the Activities Overview Hot
Corner feature very annoying (when my mouse goes over the Activities
Overview button it opens up even if I do not click it) and I am forced
to install a third-party extension in order to disable it, but I would
much rather it if I could just disable it in the gnome-tweak-tool so I
really think that there should be an option to do it. Because some may
like it, but you should understand that some may not and it is the sort
of feature you should allow users to disable without having to install
  third-party extensions to do so.

[Bug 1527633] Re: Have options to suspend after 5 and 10 minutes of inactivity as well - feature request

2018-01-24 Thread Nikita Yerenkov-Scott
** Description changed:

In the unity-control-center one is able to set it so that their computer
suspends after 5 minutes of inactivity as well as 10 minutes, however
the gnome-control-center only allows times equal to or above 15 minutes
which is rather annoying because if you want to set it to something
below 15 minutes like 5 minutes, you have to go into the dconf-editor
and change it yourself. So I think that the gnome-control-center should
also allow you to set it to 10 minutes and 5 minutes.

[Bug 1538248] Re: Text appears to be deselected (though is not) when holding down CTRL if the "Show location of cursor" option is on

2018-01-24 Thread Nikita Yerenkov-Scott
** Description changed:

I recently enabled the option in the gnome-tweak-tool called "Show
location of cursor" so now when I press CTRL I get a nice animation
coming from my cursor. However if I have any text selected when I press
CTRL, until I have released the button, the text appears as normal and
appears to be deselected though I believe it is not, if it is, then it
just reselect when I release the button.

And this becomes rather distracting when trying to copy text as it
disappears when you press CTRL... And it's not just for text, it seems
to do the same for anything that is selected, such as a text box or
  something.

[Bug 1610606] Re: Strange font colour change when cursored over in gnome-tweak-tool after GTK theme change

2018-01-24 Thread Nikita Yerenkov-Scott
** Description changed:

I have found that on Ubuntu GNOME 16.04 with GNOME 3.20 if I go into the
gnome-tweak-tool and change the GTK theme, even if I then change it
back, the fonts go really strange when cursored over as shown in the
screencast which I have attached (when I switch it to Adwaita, though it
is less noticeable, there is still a slight darkening in the font).
Though seemingly a restart of the gnome-tweak-tool means that all is
well, so I don't think just the themes are causing the trouble, probably
  something more with gnome-tweak-tool.

[Bug 1744465] [NEW] After emptying the search box with "Clear Search History" pressing Esc restores search box contents

2018-01-20 Thread Nikita Yerenkov-Scott
Public bug reported:

In the search box (not the URL bar) I have noticed that if I enter some
text, for instance if I put the word "sausage" in there, and then I
right-click on the box and click "Clear Search History" that it also
clears the text in the search box.

If I click off the search box it stays blank. However if I (without
clicking off it) press the Esc key, then the word "sausage" (or whatever
was there) is restored.

I think if you're going to clear the text box of its contents when
somebody clicks the clear history button, that you should allow pressing
Esc to just restore it. It's strange and inconsistent.

I am running an up-to-date installation of Ubuntu 17.10 and Firefox
version 57.0.4.

@Phillip,

Oh, sorry, for some reason the interface messed up and only showed me
that you changed the title. Sorry about that, it's now seemingly
preventing me for some silly reason from changing the title back. Wonder
if you could do that again? Sorry this is a little awkward.

[Bug 1652282] Re: Xwayland not using XAUTHORITY, prevents root applications from connecting

2017-11-16 Thread Nikita Yerenkov-Scott
@Phillip, I am afraid that this is the new standard and it's not going
to change. Just use Xorg if you don't like it. But anyway, soon
applications will all upgrade their source code, and then when they meet
the set requirements they will all work as before. Just more securely.

So please stop changing the title. You're just being a nuisance.

[Bug 1528915] Re: Allow changing of the top panel's colour and transparency levels without need to install extension - feature request

2017-11-06 Thread Nikita Yerenkov-Scott
@Dave, Yes, I know, that's the one I'm referring to in my bug
description (in fact it's quite obvious from the title of the bug). I
meant that I was requesting for this functionality to be built-in rather
than having to install the extension. Anyway, this bug is almost 2
-years-old, and I'm on Arch now so you Ubuntu can do what you want with
it. But it should be noted that there has been a little upstream
activity on the bug so maybe this will get implemented in at least a
similar way to the way I requested.

[Bug 1609009] Re: gnome-terminal should allow the disabling of text wrapping (so that there is a scroll bar at the bottom instead)

2017-11-06 Thread Nikita Yerenkov-Scott
@Marius, This could still be done as a downstream patch and they haven't
rejected that yet so there's no reason to close it as just "Opinion", in
fact it would make more sense for them to close this as "Won't fix"
because really "Opinion" refers to something completely different.

I must admit that after looking at the description given for this option
it does look like it's at least very close, but I've always been told
that this is not what the option is for when others use it on my bugs.

[Bug 1652282] Re: GParted does not work in GNOME on Wayland

2017-11-04 Thread Nikita Yerenkov-Scott
So, basically, Wayland doesn't allow something really insecure where the
whole GUI and everything has root privileges, so it doesn't allow
insecure applications to gain root access, however a program can be
easily adapted (depending on how it's written) in order to be secure and
then you will be able to run it as normal under Wayland. For instance
etherape recently got adapted and you just have to now run it like so
"sudo etherape -Z username" and then it runs in a way Wayland finds
secure and thus it runs as normal as a GUI program but it just runs the
GUI as the normal specified user and only the necessary components as
root.

Anyway, has GParted upstream released a fix for this? Programs just have
to match the new security standards in order to run. That's all, they
will have to change and then your experience will be fine again. But I
don't think you're going to be able to lessen the Wayland standards,
instead take this up with the other developers so that they make their
programs meet those standards.

[Bug 1652282] Re: Xwayland not using XAUTHORITY, prevents root applications from connecting

2017-11-04 Thread Nikita Yerenkov-Scott
I am afraid that this is a Wayland security feature and that it is not
going to be removed just because some users don't like it or don't
understand why it is there. As a workaround you can just carry on using
Xorg, but under Wayland the program has to be adapted in order not to
run the whole program and GUI as root but rather just the specific
things within it that need that.

I'm not sure that there actually is anything the Ubuntu people can
actually do about this though unless they hack at Wayland and make it
less secure. If you want to change Wayland then file an upstream report
about this. Ubuntu is really just packaging and redistributing this
stuff.

** Changed in: gparted (Ubuntu)
   Status: Invalid => Confirmed

** Summary changed:

- Xwayland not using XAUTHORITY, prevents root applications from connecting
+ GParted does not work in GNOME on Wayland

** Tags added: yakkety

** Description changed:

- When running wayland, GDM fails to set up an XAUTHORITY file and instead
- relies on the process UID for authentication. This prevents
- applications run as root, like gparted or synaptic from connecting to
- the server. GDM needs to set up the XAUTHORITY file when running
- Xwayland just like it does when it runs the conventional Xorg.
+ I have found that after switching from Xorg to Wayland on Ubuntu GNOME
+ 16.10 with GNOME 3.22 that GParted does not run when I try to run it as
+ root. That is when I click the icon and enter my password nothing
+ happens. I have found that when running what is run when the icon is

@Mike, I am afraid that I don't know, all I know is it worked as I
described previously until a recent update and now GParted no longer
runs as root under Wayland. So it was either a bug they fixed, a new
feature implemented in some way, or they changed the default
configuration. If I find out the answer, I will let you know.

[Bug 1696849] [NEW] Ability to disable Hot Corner

2017-06-08 Thread Nikita Yerenkov-Scott
Public bug reported:

I think it would be nice if there were an option in the shell for one to
disable the Hot Corner. This can currently be achieved by installing
third-party extensions, but as this functionality is not suited to all
and I find rather annoying, I think it would be nice if it were possible
to achieve this via the gnome-tweak-tool, however bug #1543099 is not
possible until the shell has support for such functionality. So it would
be nice if it could be implemented.

[Bug 1696488] [NEW] "Show location of pointer" option does not work

2017-06-07 Thread Nikita Yerenkov-Scott
Public bug reported:

I have found that on my Ubuntu GNOME 17.04 installation with GNOME 3.24
that turning on the "Show location of pointer" does nothing. For when I
press CTRL there is no such animation to indicate the location of my
pointer on screen. I am running Wayland, but I have got a friend to test
it out on Fedora 26 installation with GNOME 3.24 and Xorg and they also
experience the issue. Seemingly nothing special is outputted in Terminal
when changing the setting, nor does journalctl seem to show anything at
all related to it. This issue also affected my Arch installation so it's
not distro-specific. But previous issues seemed to be Wayland-specific,
whereas this one is not.

[Bug 968213] Re: Too many apps in Gnome Shell Activities Overview require ellipses

2017-06-05 Thread Nikita Yerenkov-Scott
The excuses they give upstream for not fixing this is ridiculous, what's
the point in working on so many new features for each release if they
can't even get the existing ones working to a satisfactory degree?

New features are important, but if I was in charge of development I
would certainly make sure that focus was also on making sure that
current features which are there to stay work properly. Otherwise I'm
just building a wonky building with a fancy roof.

[Bug 1692233] [NEW] Unable to install language packs

2017-05-20 Thread Nikita Yerenkov-Scott
Public bug reported:

I have found that on my Ubuntu GNOME 17.04 installation with GNOME
3.24.1 that if I open the "Region & Language" section of the gnome-
control-center that even though in Terminal it is indicated that there
are Enlish (UK) packages to install, it doesn't do anything in the GUI.
And if I attempt to install a new language the whole window just really
quickly flashes once but nothing else happens. Here is the output from
Terminal:

** (gnome-control-center:9685): WARNING **: Ignoring launcher gufw

(gnome-control-center:9685): common-cc-panel-WARNING **: Language

I know other people who are experiencing this issue and the only way for
them to install new languages is to install the gnome-language-selector
from Unity.

[Bug 1690558] [NEW] Two clicks rather than one are needed in the poweroff dialog for buttons

2017-05-13 Thread Nikita Yerenkov-Scott
Public bug reported:

I have found that on my Ubuntu GNOME 17.04 installation with GNOME
3.24.x that in the power off dialog one is now needed to click twice on
any of the buttons in order to make them do anything ("Cancel",
"Restart" and "Shutdown" buttons). Or rather, one is needed to click
anywhere on the screen before the buttons respond, it is up to you, you
can click twice on the button you wish to do something, or you may click
anywhere else including on any of the other buttons, then just click for
the second time on the button you want to and it will realise that you
have clicked it. The first click doesn't even trigger the little
animation of the button. This issue wasn't present with GNOME 3.22
Ubuntu GNOME 16.10.

I said that all of the buttons have this issue, but actually that only
started today, previously the "Cancel" button would work with just one
click, but after days of that button working, it has now stopped
behaving as it should, and started behaving like the others. However my
friend with GNOME 3.24.x tells me that his "Cancel" button still works
as expected while the others do not.

[Bug 1653153] Re: Windows not always drawn in correct places in AO when under Wayland

2017-05-03 Thread Nikita Yerenkov-Scott
Since 3.24 on Arch Linux I have also noticed that if one is to go into
the AO and:

1. Shift-click to open an application without leaving the AO, or use a keyboard
shortcut in order not to have to go back into the AO but to stay in it.
2. Before the window for the application appears in the view click and drag and
carry on holding any window in the AO.
3. Release the window when the new one comes up.

If you follow the above steps then you should see something like this:

Overlapping_Windows_In_AO.png

And if you do the above, but instead of opening a new window, you are to
click the "x" button on and then quickly click and drag a window you
will either find that the same thing happens, or a large gap is left
like here:

Gap_Left_In_AO.png

[Bug 1687288] [NEW] Attempting to update extensions through browser using chrome-gnome-shell fails and messes everything up

2017-04-30 Thread Nikita Yerenkov-Scott
Public bug reported:

I have found the same issue with Firefox (though I have not yet been
able to test in any other browser not using the NPAPI plugin) as I have
with Epiphany in Bug #1686796. The only real difference between the
Firefox and Epiphany experience is that with Firefox I don't get the
"ERROR" message on the site and the extensions do actually seem to
update properly, but it turns them all on and doesn't allow me to
disable them until I restart the system. It also messed the AO up and
made the extensions not function properly.

Further information including screenshots can be found at the bug I
mentioned as I basically get all the same stuff. I am running Ubuntu
GNOME 17.04 with GNOME 3.24.1.

[Bug 1686796] Re: Attempting to update extensions through Epiphany fails and messes everything up

2017-04-30 Thread Nikita Yerenkov-Scott
As Epiphany uses the NPAPI plugin and the other browsers use chrome-
gnome-shell, I will file another report for the other browsers.

** Summary changed:

- Attempting to update extensions through browser not using NPAPI plugin fails
and messes everything up
+ Attempting to update extensions through Epiphany fails and messes everything
up

** Description changed:

- I am running Ubuntu GNOME 17.04 with GNOME 3.24 and though in the paste
- all worked fine with the NPAPI in Firefox, now if I try to update GNOME
- extensions with it or Epiphany all hell breaks loose using the add-on
- and native host connector method. So if I went here
- https://extensions.gnome.org/local/ in Epiphany or Firefox and tried to
- update an extension with little green up arrow, then for a few of them
- it might work, but sooner rather than later I would just get a big white
- on red "ERROR" message where the buttons would normally be. At which
- point, if I had tried to update extensions which were disabled at the
- time of me trying to update them, they would become enabled and be stuck
- on that mode until I restarted my machine.
+
+ I am running Ubuntu GNOME 17.04 with GNOME 3.24, and through Chrome,
+ Chromium and Firefox all works fine in terms of the GNOME Extensions
+ site. However, if one is to use Epiphany then there is one hell of an
+ issue with updating extensions. So if I went here
+ https://extensions.gnome.org/local/ in Epiphany and tried to update an
+ extension with little green up arrow, then for a few of them it might

It also appears to break a lot of things with gnome-shell, though what
it does each time appears rather random. This issue was present in GNOME
3.22, but certainly got worse with everything in the AO breaking with
  3.24.

If I try to disable or enable any of the affected extensions using the
gnome-tweak-tool then I am unable to move the slider and there is a
  little "error loading extension" (gnome-tweak-tool_Extension_Errors.png)
next to each one, I am also unable to get the "Remove" button to work.

I have also attached some screenshots of the kinds of strange things
that occur when I do this. You will also notice the "Applications" and
  "Places" (Applications_Places_Menus_Showing.png) menus being present,
those extensions are some of those that weren't on originally, but then
got jammed on when I tried to update them even though I never actually
tried to turn them on. If I then restart my system I can disable and
even remove them, but not until a full restart is performed. Not even
  restarting gnome-shell seems to work.

I have also noticed that after I start seeing "ERROR" on the website
that I get the same or just the update arrow reappears a few seconds
after clicking it with all the other extensions and thus am unable to
update them. This is all rather annoying.

Note: Any strange big white boxes or black boxes in the screenshots are
just me hiding personal information etc.
-
- Also, previously I thought this issue was only in Epiphany but the same,
- maybe even work, issue now also happens in Firefox. Though I was not
- able to test it in Chrome or Chromium.

[Bug 1686044] [NEW] Allow the enable of two-finger-scrolling and edge-scrolling at the same time

Public bug reported:

I find both two-finger-scrolling and edge-scrolling quite useful in
different circumstances, so I think it would be quite nice if I could

Currently selecting one in the Mouse & Touchpad settings deselects the
other.

[Bug 1652282] Re: GParted does not work in GNOME on Wayland

2017-04-24 Thread Nikita Yerenkov-Scott
@Phillip, Wayland actually does accommodate it, I have an Arch system
where it works perfectly fine with running GParted as root. The reason
it doesn't work on Ubuntu is not completely because of Wayland, but
rather because of how Wayland has been set up by the Ubuntu GNOME team.
Which is intentional for security. I don't know, but you might be able
to disable this since it's probably somewhere in the configuration. I
don't know, I just know that on Arch there is no issue with this with
the standard Wayland.

I am on Ubuntu GNOME 17.04 with GNOME 3.24, though obviously still Gedit
3.22, and I have found something slightly annoying with it, and that is
that when mousing over the last line to try to copy and paste it for
instance, the bottom scroll bar goes on top of it and obscures it. I
have attached two screenshots of what I mean.

This also affects me on Arch so I have filled an upstream report on

[Bug 1681768] [NEW] Allow adding of categories to dock

2017-04-11 Thread Nikita Yerenkov-Scott
Public bug reported:

I find the categories in the Activities Overview's applications list
rather useful when it comes to certain groups of applications which I
use, however I have to go all the way into the list to get the grouping
which should make it much easier to access certain applications which
are perhaps used together (I mean categories such as Sundry or
Utilities).

So I think it would be rather useful if one could 'Favourite' these and
make it so that they stay in the dock. Then perhaps when clicking on
them a long thing could come out of the dock with the icon lists of the
various applications in the list, or some other way of allowing the user
to select the application they wish from the category.

[Bug 1672161] [NEW] Have better archive handling

2017-03-12 Thread Nikita Yerenkov-Scott
Public bug reported:

I have a system running Ubuntu GNOME 16.10 with GNOME 3.22 and I have
found that in this version of GNOME if one right-clicks on a file or
folder or a group of them and goes to "Compress..." that they are
provided with 3 different formats to compress into, however the options
which allow splitting of large archives into smaller ones as well as the
ability to encrypt them with a password are gone. This can obviously
still be done through the CLIs of the various tools, however it would be
useful to have such features accessible as they used to be through the
GUI. Perhaps this is a side-effect of making all Nautilus activities
central to the Nautilus GUI? Because I think I remember it possibly
opening another program in the past which had these options.

Regardless of what it and how it did it in the past, these are vital
options which are missing and I think should be added back for ease of
use.

I am fine with using the CLI, but many users are not.

[Bug 1662688] [NEW] Have drag and drop support for the dock

2017-02-07 Thread Nikita Yerenkov-Scott
Public bug reported:

It would be useful if the dock in the AO supported drag and drop, that
is so that one may drag a file to one of its docked applications and it
may open it. Although this wouldn't necessarily be so useful for
standard installs, users of extensions such as Dash to Dock would find
this highly useful. So it would be nice if this feature were at least
supported so that they could implement it as such extensions are
becoming more and more popular day by day.

[Bug 1652282] Re: Wayland default policy prohibits root applications

2017-02-07 Thread Nikita Yerenkov-Scott
@Phillip, This is an intended policy and it is there for security
reasons so rather than decreasing security standards, I think it would
be best for GParted to simply meet them.

[Bug 1656100] [NEW] Unable to remove signing keys using gnome-software-properties

2017-01-12 Thread Nikita Yerenkov-Scott
Public bug reported:

I have found that on Ubuntu GNOME 16.10 with GNOME 3.22 that I am unable
to remove signing keys in the Authentication tab. If I select a key I
wish to remove and click the Remove button, either nothing will happen,
or it will ask me for authentication, upon giving it the correct
password all that will happen is it will deselect the key I select, but
at no point will it actually remove it, which is rather annoying.

[Bug 1652282] Re: GParted fails to run as root under Wayland

2017-01-11 Thread Nikita Yerenkov-Scott
No, this is a security feature in Wayland, it's not meant to allow
windows to run as root. This has already been established in the
upstream report.

[Bug 1655464] [NEW] Unable to install language packs through gnome-control-center on 16.10

2017-01-10 Thread Nikita Yerenkov-Scott
Public bug reported:

I have noticed that on a fresh install of Ubuntu GNOME 16.10 with GNOME
3.22 that if I go into the gnome-control-center's Language & Region
section that although this is the Terminal output:

** (gnome-control-center:23709): WARNING **: Ignoring launcher gufw
(missing desktop file)

** (gnome-control-center:23709): WARNING **: Ignoring launcher
landscape-client-settings (missing desktop file)

en_GB.UTF-8 not installed, trying to install it

(gnome-control-center:23709): common-cc-panel-WARNING **: Language
ja_JP not installed, trying to install it

Although after waiting at least 10 minutes, I found that nothing
actually happened after selecting a new language to install and thus I
am unable to install and set new languages. It also is detecting that I
do not have all of the English GB language packs installed, and normally
a window would popup to ask me if I want to install them, but currently
I get absolutely nothing.
