[Bug 1853694] Re: Ubuntu causing eye strain on Intel Integrated Graphics
The screen is flickering in so much as there is a very faint shimmering effect. This is usually the effect of dithering which adjusts the pixel color values rapidly to give the impression of colors that are not normally present. This effect is welcomed if using a low quality display however for certain indivduals causes significant discomfort. [Bug 1211110] Re: network manager openvpn dns push data not updating resolv.conf
I have the same problem on Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr. Not sure this is a bug, though, just a M$ Windows-only feature as it's a TCP/IP extended property. The man page for OpenVPN describes --dhcp- option as a Windows-specific option. If the OpenVPN server pushes a DNS server address to the client with, eg dhcp-option DNS 8.8.8.8 then on a Linux platform this option is not actioned by the client. Instead it is copied to a set of incrementally numbered local environment variables named foreign_option_{n} which are available to scripts run by the --up and --down OpenVPN options. The /etc/openvpn/update-resolve-conf script provided with the OpenVPN package parses these environment variables and calls resolvconf to effectively do the same job in a Linuxy way. Comment #5 is invalid since the script uses resolvconf to update /etc/resolv.conf -- it is not edited directly. This is not, therefore, an OpenVPN bug, excepting that the current OpenVPN solution requires a reduced security policy by allowing builtin executables and scripts to be called when, by design, this is normally prohibited by default. It is a feature request for Network Manager, though. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to openvpn in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/120 Title: network manager openvpn dns push data not updating resolv.conf To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-manager/+bug/120/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

Brian, Yes same problem on Ubuntu 13.04 i686 Kernel 3.8.0-29 (and previous kernel). Initially the update manager available updates field was blank although it showed several MB of downloads available. I didn't attempt updates fearing it would fall over. Days later when further updates came online the available updates field returned although I had the impression that it was stylistically different in some way: different font size? different or smaller icons? Changed layout? Hard to say, but the presentation appeared different to me. Used apt-get from shell to download and install the updates (as I always do, I just use the GUI to read the changelogs and version info). All installed ok and to date there's no new updates available. [Bug 1181528] Re: /etc/init.d/umountroot: 'mount / is busy' due to upstart log file
I'm seeing what appears to be an unclean shutdown. It looks like / is marked as dirty: every boot runs fsck: % dmesg | grep sda2 EXT3-fs (sda2): recovery required on readonly filesystem EXT3-fs (sda2): write access will be enabled during recovery EXT3-fs (sda2): recovery complete EXT3-fs (sda2): mounted filesystem with ordered data mode sda2 is my root / partition. There is 1 drive (SCSI) with 6 partitions. sda1 (/boot, ext3), sda2 (/, ext3) and sda3 (swap) are all primary partitions. sda5 (/home, ext3) and sda6 (/share, FAT32) are logical. Only / (sda2) is unclean. The workaround of deselecting Available to all users in Network Connections discussed in LP: #1073433 works for me. It would seem that there are multiple bugs causing the same behaviour. [Bug 1073433] Re: Ext4 corruption associated with shutdown of Ubuntu 12.10
I'm experiencing similar issues on an EXT-3 filesystem. There are no inode/block errors reported by fsck but the root filesystem (/ is mounted on /dev/sda2 in my case) fails the fsck check at boot. % dmesg | grep sda2 EXT3-fs (sda2): recovery required on readonly filesystem EXT3-fs (sda2): write access will be enabled during recovery EXT3-fs (sda2): recovery complete EXT3-fs (sda2): mounted filesystem with ordered data mode [Edited for brevity] This happens on every boot. The other partitions (and there are 6 including swap) all pass the fsck check. The workaround of deselecting Available to all users in Network Connections discussed above works for me. Seems reasonable to assume that this is not filesystem specific and that the shutdown is not clean for some reason. [Bug 1079900] Re: nForce2 cpufreq driver does not load by default
Fixing LP: #1084262 would resolve this bug. Proposal: Fix LP: #1084262 and then unwind the fixes here. This is a better solution than the current config fix committed for the 3.7.0-3.9 kernel build: [Config] Enable CONFIG_X86_CPUFREQ_NFORCE2=y The main advantage is a reduction in kernel footprint since the built-in will revert to a module which was probably the rationale for making this change in the first place. Multiple built-ins can potentially be modularised, eg the PCC cpufreq driver (see LP: #1061126) which appears to have had the same problem. The cpufrequtils package maintainer would ideally fix this upstream (see LP: #1084262 for patch). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1079900 Title: nForce2 cpufreq driver does not load by default To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1079900/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1084262] [NEW] Discovered cpufreq kernel modules are not loaded any more
Public bug reported: loadcpufreq: Discovered cpufreq kernel modules are not loaded any more --Expected-- cpufreq driver to be loaded at boot when cpufrequtils is installed --What happened instead--- The driver was not loaded. (Can be manually loaded). --Description-- The shell script file `loadcpufreq' fails to load cpufreq driver kernel modules since the modules were renamed. Script: /etc/init.d/loadcpufreq Kernel modules: /lib/modules/$(uname -r)/kernel/drivers/cpufreq/ The loadcpufreq script is hard-wired to know the cpu-specific module names that it loads at boot. Additionally, it attempts to discover and load other, unknown cpufreq drivers. The unknown modules are assumed by the script to have a name beginning `cpufreq_', eg, `cpufreq_nforce2'. At some point, the cpufreq module names in the distro have been rationalised resulting in the `cpufreq_' modules being renamed to `cpufreq-'. Consequently, they are no longer discovered and loaded by loadcpufreq. --Solution-- Attached is a patch to loadcpufreq which resolves the problem. A changelog entry is included. The diff is made against the latest (version 8) cpufrequtils package source which has been verified against the Quantal version of /etc/init.d/loadcpufreq. I have tested the patch under a number of scenarios and am confident that it does not introduce new problems or regressions. Perhaps it can be floated upstream to the package maintainer. --Impact-- Limited. This bug will only affect systems with the cpufrequtils package installed, a specific kernel configuration and particular cpu scaling hardware. --Test case-- 1. Install cpufrequtils under a kernel with a modularised rather than built-in hardware-specific cpufreq driver named cpufreq-*.ko. Eg, an nforce2-based machine running Quantal with kernel 3.5.0-18.29 with module cpufreq-nforce2.ko. 2. Reboot 3. Verify that the module has not been loaded at boot % lsmod | grep cpufreq 4. Manually insert the module and verify. % sudo modprobe cpufreq-name % lsmod | grep cpufreq 5. Apply patch 6. Reboot 7. Repeat 3 above to verify that this time the module *has* been loaded. [Bug 1079900] [NEW] nForce2 cpufreq driver does not load by default
Public bug reported: nForce2 cpufreq driver does not load by default On upgrading to Quantal 12.10 from Precise 12.04.1 I noticed that the cpufreq nforce2 driver (cpufreq-nforce2) no longer loads at boot. The driver loads fine manually with modprobe or by adding an explicit /etc/default/loadcpufreq file. Once loaded all works as expected. Incidentally, trying to load it using kernel command line parameter cpufreq_driver=cpufreq-nforce2 fails. Is this a bug? Am I misusing it? Is it related to this problem? I also tried a clean install of Quantal to rule out upgrade jip. Same result. The last kernel published to updates on Precise before my upgrade was: % uname -a Linux NF7-S1 3.2.0-32-generic-pae #51-Ubuntu SMP Wed Sep 26 21:54:23 UTC 2012 i686 athlon i686 GNU/Linux which works as expected: % cpufreq-info cpufrequtils 008: cpufreq-info (C) Dominik Brodowski 2004-2009 Report errors and bugs to cpuf...@vger.kernel.org, please. analyzing CPU 0: driver: nforce2 CPUs which run at the same hardware frequency: 0 CPUs which need to have their frequency coordinated by software: 0 maximum transition latency: 0.00 ms. hardware limits: 1.46 GHz - 2.09 GHz available cpufreq governors: conservative, ondemand, userspace, powersave, performance current policy: frequency should be within 1.46 GHz and 2.09 GHz. There has been some builtin / module shuffling since the 3.2.0 kernel wrt cpufreq. Coincidence? Looks suspicious. Consequences Because the cpufreq driver is not loaded, there is no /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/ directory. This is used by CPU monitoring and/or scaling software to report or change CPU speed, governor et cetera. All s/w using this interface will fail unless the cpufreq driver is explicitly loaded post boot. I noticed the problem because my conky stopped working -- it references /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/*. Once the driver is manually loaded, the conky works as expected. To reproduce This will require access to old metal. This bug report comes from an Abit NF7-S V2 with an AMD Athlon XP-M which has been running Ubuntu since Lucid without problem. I would expect any nForce2 chipset motherboard to reproduce this bug. Had a closer look at this. Scratch my theory (comment #3) about switching routers. The corrupted package list files in /var/lib/apt/lists are caused by the router redirecting to an internal help page when it realises that its internet connection is down. So, when a fetch is attempted from, say gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/precise- updates/universe/binary-i386/Packages when checking for updates what comes back is the html source from the router's help page (example attached -- line 52 contains the requested url). It would appear that no sanity check is done on the returned data leaving subsequent parse attempts to choke. The corrupted files remain and may propagate (???) causing other update failures. On a security note, it occurs to me that an attacker in control of the router could return crafted files in place of apt's package lists to introduce malware as part of the normal automated update process. I trust checks are in place to prevent this??? NB My experience may or may not be the cause of the original bug poster's crash. As apt-xapian-index is not the originating culprit I will file a new bug report about corrupted apt package lists. ** Attachment added: Corrupted package list file from /var/lib/apt/lists https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/apt-xapian-index/+bug/960220/+attachment/3341685/+files/gb.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_precise-updates_universe_binary-i386_Packages.IndexDiff -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/960220 Title: update-apt-xapian-index crashed with SystemError in open(): E:Read error - read (5: Input/output error), E:The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened. [Bug 1055614] Re: captive web portal corrupt Indexes
Still present in 12.04 LTS, Precise running apt 0.8.16 In my case the corrupted package list files in /var/lib/apt/lists are caused by the router redirecting to an internal help page when it realises that its internet connection is down. ** Attachment added: Example corrupted package list file from /var/lib/apt/lists https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/update-manager/+bug/1055614/+attachment/3341892/+files/gb.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_precise-updates_universe_binary-i386_Packages.IndexDiff -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1055614 Title: captive web portal corrupt Indexes To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/update-manager/+bug/1055614/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 960220] Re: update-apt-xapian-index crashed with SystemError in open(): E:Read error - read (5: Input/output error), E:The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.
Appears to be caused by corrupted files in /var/lib/apt/lists (see ls -l of affected files attached). My theory is that these are corrupted when user switches between two different internet connections (2 routers) when the software updater is (automagically) using the connection to check for updates. In my case the corrupted files were filled with html source from (one of) the routers web interface pages. Weird. [Bug 971321] Re: Several Models of Microsoft Wireless Mice, i.e. model 3500 and 5000 have vertical scroll wheel issues in linux
With help from others, fIxed a few bugs in the source and added support for the Laser Mouse 6000 Receiver. Also in the tar file is an optional kernel patch for the 3.3.0 series that I have had success with. Note that you don't need the kernel patch if you use the userland program, and don't need the userland program if you use the kernel patch. I still have to package this program into a .deb and .rpm. ** Summary changed: - Several Models of Microsoft Wireless Mice, i.e. model 3500 and 5000 have vertical scroll wheel issues in linux + Several Models of Microsoft Wireless Mice, i.e. model Wireless Mobile Mouse 3500, 5000, and Wireless Laser Mouse 6000 have vertical scroll wheel issues in linux -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/971321 Title: Several Models of Microsoft Wireless Mice, i.e. model Wireless Mobile Mouse 3500, 5000, and Wireless Laser Mouse 6000 have vertical scroll wheel issues in linux To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/971321/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 658235] Re: Microsoft Wireless Mobile Mouse Very Sensitive Scroll
I have created a userland application that resets this behavior in several Microsoft Mice on boot. I have confirmed it works in Microsoft Wirless Mice Models 3500 5000. If you able to compile an application with a configure script, you can download the source code here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/resetmsmice/files/ I will be making Ubuntu and Fedora packages shortly and will post them here as well. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/658235 Title: Microsoft Wireless Mobile Mouse Very Sensitive Scroll To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/658235/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 971321] [NEW] Several Models of Microsoft Wireless Mice, i.e. model 3500 and 5000 have vertical scroll wheel issues in linux
Public bug reported: I have created a userland application, resetmsmice, which fixes scroll wheel issues with certain Wireless Microsoft mice in X.org (includes KDE Gnome applications), where the vertical wheel scrolls abnormally fast. Only needed if you dual boot between Microsoft Windows and some linux distro. Known to fix the vertical scroll wheel issue with the following models (and others related): #Microsoft Wireless Mobile Mouse 3500 #Microsoft Wireless Mouse 5000 This program basically just resets a setting in the mouse through usb communications and then exits. Only if the mouse matches vendor [0x045e] (Microsoft) and product code [0x0745] (a series of Microsoft Wireless mice) it will check for this usb setting. This code is released under the GNU GPL v2 license. It is available here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/resetmsmice/files/ I will be creating Ubuntu and Fedora packages shortly. This bug has been reported previously, but the resolution I've seen has been to unplug the receiver and plug it back in. A bit of a pain to have to constantly do! This code will fix that. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/971321 Title: Several Models of Microsoft Wireless Mice, i.e. model 3500 and 5000 have vertical scroll wheel issues in linux To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/971321/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
