[Bug 1599952] Re: Blurred images with kernels after 4.2.x
Kernel 4.4.21 LTS The above-referenced kernel was released today. It may (might) resolve the regression I have experienced that keeps me from using Ubuntu 16.04.1 (believed to be an i915 driver issue). To find out I need to try the kernel in Ubuntu. If I install from an .iso (16.04.1) and select the option to check for updates while installing, will I end up with the new kernel installed? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1599952 Title: Blurred images with kernels after 4.2.x To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/1599952/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1599952] Answer
Christopher: I downloaded Ubuntu 14.04.1, the oldest version of the 14.04 LTS I could still find online. It installed and worked fine, albeit with old applications. I then upgraded to the 4.8 kernel per your instructions, and after doing a sudo reboot the machine simply refused to restart. The system was so unresponsive that I was unable to capture a screenshot to send you. I have reinstalled Mint 17.3 MATE and consider myself finished with this issue. Kernels newer than 4.2.x do not work on my machine. By the way, the reason I went to Mint was because I like the MATE or the XFCE DEs better than Unity, and the Xubuntu and MATE Ubuntu flavors are not supported as long as 2019. I will likely have to buy a new machine when Mint 17.3 ceases to be supported, but I have time. Meanwhile, I have fairly new apps and a stable system. Thanks for your efforts, anyway. Re: [Bug 1599952] Re: Blurred images with kernels after 4.2.x
You don't say whether there is any reason to believe there might have been a change to address the regression that affects my system. Even so, I will try to get to the store tomorrow and try the new kernel, as you suggest, as soon as I can - maybe tomorrow evening. If it works for me Iĺl let you know, and if it doesn't I'll send you a screenshot before going back to Mint. RD On 08/29/2016 09:26 AM, Christopher M. [Bug 1599952] Re: Blurred images with kernels after 4.2.x
Christopher: I have surveyed the pages you reference about how to perform bisects, and determined 1) that I cannot invest the time required and 2) I do not possess the technical ability required. My shortcomings are exacerbated by the fact that to perform the series of tests needed I must have the regressed Ubuntu distro with the impaired display running on my machine, an impracticality at this time in light of my ongoing need to have access to a working and reliable machine. I know there are ways around this, like having multiple partitions for testing distros, or using live or virtual environments for testing, but these are beyond my technical ability and time constraints at this time. I know this only hurts me, because eventually I will have to upgrade my hardware when the distros I'm now using are updated to newer kernels, but there is nothing I can do about that at this time. I suspect it is unlikely that someone else will fix this other than me, but as already stated I cannot do any more at this time. I cannot document it in the terms you require, but I am still fairly sure that all the 4.2.x series worked on my hardware, and none after. Thanks again for your interest. Thanks again for your interest. I can report that I tested upstream kernel 4.7-6 as requested. And it did not resolve my issues. Please keep in mind the following: 1) The one to test is at the very top line at the top of the page (not the daily folder). 2) The release names are irrelevant. 3) The folder time stamps aren't indicative of when the kernel actually was released upstream. 4) Install instructions are available at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/MainlineBuilds . If testing on your main install would be inconvenient, one may: 1) Install Ubuntu to a different partition and then test this there. 2) Backup, or clone the primary install. Re: [Bug 1599952] Re: i915 driver not supported in kernels after 4.2.x
Thanks very much. I will do the install, send you the requested output, and then reload a distro that I can see. It is more than worth it to me since you are willing to look at my issue. I have always liked Ubuntu (especially MATE), and this is a small price to pay for a chance to help you improve it. You'll have the information in a few hours. On second thought, I suspect you need me to do what you ask from a current release (one I am having trouble with). Therefore, I'm downloading the torrent for MATE 16.04 64-bit, and will install it and suffer through the blurry screen long enough to do what you ask. Give me a couple hours, please. I appreciate the interest in my problem. [Bug 1599952] [NEW] i915 driver not supported in kernels after 4.2.x
Public bug reported: Have used Ubuntu or its flavors for 3 years with no issues on this machine. Installed Ubuntu 16.04 64-bit lts, and successively xubuntu 16.04, ubuntuMATE 16.04, and lubuntu 16.04. Each installed, but with blurred images. Could not get native 1920x1080 resolution to display. Would like to use one of these, but am relegated to Debian or Debian derivatives using older kernels and packages that support the driver. Sandy Bridge integrated graphics with my i5 cpu were manufactured in 2011 -- in my opinion not too old to still work or at least be supported somehow. A patch or updated driver would be great. There were a bunch of these Asus cm6850 machines made. ** Affects: xorg (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1599952 Title: i915 driver not supported in kernels after 4.2.x To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/1599952/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 684599] Re: Memory leak in nm-applet
I insist together with axion. nm-applet is critically leaking memory (tops 300Mb to 500Mb). Usage of my Xubuntu as a server while opening a desktop environment is consequently impossible : my 3Gb of RAM memory are filled within the day. the program using the original start-program StartCOMset.sh from Auerswald is running on ubuntu 6.06 the same program with the same start-program from Auerswald is not running on ubuntu 6.10. But, if I create a starter for my own such as cd ~/COMset/COMset-2.6.18; sudo /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun-1.6.0.00/bin/java -Djava.library.path=. -cp auerswald_lib.jar:COMset.jar:RXTXcomm.jar:comm.jar de.auerswald.commander.basic.BasicMain the program starting it with my own start-program (see above) is running without any problems on both ubuntu versions. I wonder why does it run with the original start-program from Auerswald on ubuntu 6.06 but it does not on ubuntu 6.10. I am not trusted with Java, but as far I can see, I agree with you, that the problem is the improper classpath. Ubuntu 6.06 seems to correct the classpath or somewhat like this. -Ursprüngliche Nachricht- Von: Bug 88437 [EMAIL PROTECTED] Gesendet: 08.03.07 21:20:16 An: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Betreff: [Bug 88437] Re: telephone installation with Auerswald's java-program Did you try running the program with 'java -jar auerswald_lib.jar'?
