[Bug 1599952] Re: Blurred images with kernels after 4.2.x

2016-09-16 Thread RD
Kernel 4.4.21 LTS

The above-referenced kernel was released today. It may (might) resolve
the regression I have experienced that keeps me from using Ubuntu
16.04.1 (believed to be an i915 driver issue). To find out I need to try
the kernel in Ubuntu. If I install from an .iso (16.04.1) and select the
option to check for updates while installing, will I end up with the new
kernel installed?

[Bug 1599952] Answer

2016-08-30 Thread RD
Christopher:

I downloaded Ubuntu 14.04.1, the oldest version of the 14.04 LTS I could
still find online. It installed and worked fine, albeit with old
applications. I then upgraded to the 4.8 kernel per your instructions,
and after doing a sudo reboot the machine simply refused to restart.
The system was so unresponsive that I was unable to capture a screenshot
to send you. I have reinstalled Mint 17.3 MATE and consider myself
finished with this issue. Kernels newer than 4.2.x do not work on my
machine. By the way, the reason I went to Mint was because I like the
MATE or the XFCE DEs better than Unity, and the Xubuntu and MATE Ubuntu
flavors are not supported as long as 2019. I will likely have to buy a
new machine when Mint 17.3 ceases to be supported, but I have time.
Meanwhile, I have fairly new apps and a stable system. Thanks for your
efforts, anyway.

Re: [Bug 1599952] Re: Blurred images with kernels after 4.2.x

2016-08-29 Thread RD
You don't say whether there is any reason to believe there might have
been a change to address the regression that affects my system. Even
so, I will try to get to the store tomorrow and try the new kernel, as
you suggest, as soon as I can - maybe tomorrow evening. If it works for
me Iĺl let you know, and if it doesn't I'll send you a screenshot before
going back to Mint.

I am glad to receive this; I thought my issue was dead because of my
inability to perform the requested bisections. I have switched to Mint
17.3 MATE because it still uses the 3.19 kernel and is supported until
2019. If I understand you correctly, your advice is that is that I try
kernel 4.8-rc3. Could I do that on Mint, or would I have to download
Ubuntu MATE again, install it, and then try to read through my blurry
display to install the newest kernel? Also, is there reason the believe
my issue with i915 sandybridge graphics might have been corrected?
Please advise.

Support for kernel 4.2 would have been nice in the new release 14.04.5,
as it would have allowed those affected by this to still use an updated
version of 14.04 LTS...

[Bug 1599952] Re: Blurred images with kernels after 4.2.x

2016-07-11 Thread RD
Christopher:

I have surveyed the pages you reference about how to perform bisects,
and determined 1) that I cannot invest the time required and 2) I do not
possess the technical ability required. My shortcomings are exacerbated
by the fact that to perform the series of tests needed I must have the
regressed Ubuntu distro with the impaired display running on my machine,
an impracticality at this time in light of my ongoing need to have
access to a working and reliable machine. I know there are ways around
this, like having multiple partitions for testing distros, or using live
or virtual environments for testing, but these are beyond my technical
ability and time constraints at this time. I know this only hurts me,
because eventually I will have to upgrade my hardware when the distros
I'm now using are updated to newer kernels, but there is nothing I can
do about that at this time. I suspect it is unlikely that someone else
will fix this other than me, but as already stated I cannot do any more
at this time. I cannot document it in the terms you require, but I am
still fairly sure that all the 4.2.x series worked on my hardware, and
none after. Thanks again for your interest.

2016-07-11 Thread RD
Thanks again for your interest. I can report that I tested upstream
kernel 4.7-6 as requested. And it did not resolve my issues. Due to the
fact that I am now using Mx-15 (Fusion), and I must install Ubuntu to
perform further testing, I will not be able to spare any more time in
these efforts. I hope the work done so far is sufficient to point others
in the right direction.

RD, in order to allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue, at
your earliest convenience, could you please test the latest upstream kernel
available from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/?C=N;O=D ? Please
keep in mind the following:
1) The one to test is at the very top line at the top of the page (not the
daily folder).
2) The release names are irrelevant.
3) The folder time stamps aren't indicative of when the kernel actually was
released upstream.
4) Install instructions are available at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/MainlineBuilds .

If testing on your main install would be inconvenient, one may:
1) Install Ubuntu to a different partition and then test this there.
2) Backup, or clone the primary install.

If the latest kernel did not allow you to test to the issue (ex. you couldn't
boot into the OS) please make a comment in your report about this, and continue
to test the next most recent kernel version until you can test to the issue.
Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version
specifically you tested. If this issue is fixed in the mainline kernel, please
add the following tags by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil
icon, next to the word Tags, located at the bottom of the report description:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-X.Y-rcZ

Where X, and Y are the first two numbers of the kernel version, and Z is
the release candidate number if it exists.

If the mainline kernel does not fix the issue, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-X.Y-rcZ

Please note, an error to install the kernel does not fit the criteria of
kernel-bug-exists-upstream.

Also, you don't need to apport-collect further unless specifically
requested to do so.

Once testing of the latest upstream kernel is complete, please mark this
report Status Confirmed. Please let us know your results.

Thank you for your understanding.

Fwd: Re: [Bug 1599952] Re: i915 driver not supported in kernels after 4.2.x

2016-07-10 Thread RD
I tried to save a screenshot to a thumb drive, and to a folder in my main OS
from the live environment, but the Ubuntu live environment won't let one do
that. Any ideas short of reinstalling again?

At this point I have reinstalled MX-Linux. I will try to generate a
screenshot in a live environment and send it to you. Give me 30 minutes
or so...

2016-07-10 Thread RD
Thanks very much. I will do the install, send you the requested output,
and then reload a distro that I can see. It is more than worth it to me
since you are willing to look at my issue. I have always liked Ubuntu
(especially MATE), and this is a small price to pay for a chance to help
you improve it. You'll have the information in a few hours.

On second thought, I suspect you need me to do what you ask from a
current release (one I am having trouble with). Therefore, I'm
downloading the torrent for MATE 16.04 64-bit, and will install it and
suffer through the blurry screen long enough to do what you ask. Give
me a couple hours, please. I appreciate the interest in my problem.

Very well. I'll need to reinstall 14.04.4, as that is the only one I
have that works. All of the 16.04 flavors run with unreadable
displays. Let me know if that will be useful for you, and I'll do it today.

[Bug 684599] Re: Memory leak in nm-applet

2012-02-04 Thread Julien RD
I insist together with axion.
nm-applet is critically leaking memory (tops 300Mb to 500Mb).
Usage of my Xubuntu as a server while opening a desktop environment is
consequently impossible : my 3Gb of RAM memory are filled within the day.

More generaly, some other desktop applets seem leaking memory as well,
this is maybe not a network-manager error it seems (update-notifier and
xfce4-volumed a minima, looks like)

Regards.

the program starting it with my own start-program (see above) is running
without any problems on both ubuntu versions. I wonder why does it run
with the original start-program from Auerswald on ubuntu 6.06 but it
does not on ubuntu 6.10. I am not trusted with Java, but as far I can
see, I agree with you, that the problem is the improper classpath.
Ubuntu 6.06 seems to correct the classpath or somewhat like this.

Did you try running the program with 'java -jar auerswald_lib.jar'? And
I don't see how this is problem in Ubuntu. It is problem with improper
classpath being set/used.

[Bug 88437] telephone installation with Auerswald's java-program

2007-02-27 Thread rd
Public bug reported:

the linux-software on www.auerswald.de - service - download COMpact 4410USB
with the config-file JavaVersion1.4.rc works with every sun-java version on
ubuntu 6.06 perfectly. But with ubuntu 6.10 it did not - on no account.
Probably there is a problem with the local classpath
de.auerswald.commander.basic.BasicMain (see below)
With the help of the german forum I got the following solution:
I created for each part of Auerswald's software a start-program, which is for
the example of Auerswald's COMset as follows:
cd ~/Auerswald/COMset/COMset-2.6.18;
sudo /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun-1.6.0.00/bin/java -Djava.library.path=. -cp
auerswald_lib.jar:COMset.jar:RXTXcomm.jar:comm.jar
