In the Ubuntu 22.04 package, two files appear to be missing compared to
earlier versions:

[Bug 1785622] Re: Caja-dropbox does not start on 18.04.1 LTS upgraded from 16.04.5 LTS

2019-01-27 Thread Richard Lamont
I've seen a couple of other applications which produce the message:
Failed to load module "topmenu-gtk-module"

This appears to be a problem with dist-upgrading ubuntu-mate-default-
settings from 16.04 to 18.04. The upgrade installs /etc/X11/Xsession.d
/80mate-environment but does not remove the older /etc/X11/Xsession.d
/99mate-environment. Deleting the latter fixed the problem.

[Bug 1363645] [NEW] Meterbridge readings very inaccurate

2014-08-31 Thread Richard Lamont
Public bug reported:

Meterbridge has never come anywhere near to correctly implementing
either a VU meter or Peak Programme Meter, as defined in IEC 60268
(parts 17 and 10 respectively). This package ought to be deprecated in
favour of jmeters, which is a complete rewrite and does the job
properly. Since version 0.4.1, jmeters has implemented both types of
meter (and the DIN and EBU types) in accordance with the standards.

[Bug 1363378] [NEW] Meter background images wrong for BBC and EBU meter types

2014-08-30 Thread Richard Lamont
Public bug reported:

Version 0.4.1-3 amd64

The background images are wrong for the BBC and EBU meter types. Instead
of one image it appears to be three squashed-up images side by side in
the same area. It appears to be OK for the VU and DIN types. I haven't
checked the correlation meter types.

The problem seems to be caused by the compressed PNGs used. Comparing
the file sizes with the developer's source:

Using the larger PNG files fixes the problem. I don't know whether it's
a bug in the compression used, or a bug in jmeters.

It appears that the error message:

[Bug 408417] Re: No option to log in remotely via XDMCP

Why has this bug been marked as 'wontfix' for Lucid? It's a regression
against Hardy, in which a key feature of the X window system no longer
works. Is LTS just a marketing term for a release that is thrown out of
the window and forgotten?

[Bug 582938] [NEW] Regression: monitor sometimes does not wake up from sleep

2010-05-19 Thread Richard Lamont
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

Monitor is connected via SDVO DVI adapter card.

About once every two days, and unpredictably, the monitor doesn't wake
up after a period of inactivity. It is possible to SSH into the machine.
Nothing relevant appears in the logs.

This bug has only surfaced since doing a fresh install of Lucid. The
machine used to have Hardy on it, which didn't have this problem.

[Bug 269656] Re: AN IRRELEVANT LICENSE IS PRESENTED TO YOU FREE-OF-CHARGE ON STARTUP

2008-09-15 Thread Richard Lamont
As en end-user who has long sat on the idealist/pragmatist fence, I do
think a Firefox EULA represents the thin end of a potentially
catastrophic wedge. If Ubuntu accepts this, how many more upstream
projects will use it as a precedent for their own variation on the
theme? It's sufficiently important that Firefox should be taken out of
'main' and not installed by default. (If it isn't, I shall be taking
Ubuntu out and installing Debian by default.)

Two other observations:

1. A few seconds elapses between opening the Key Management window and getting

2. If I create a new user account on the same machine, it all works OK.

[Bug 119038] Key management broken after Thunderbird upgrade

2007-06-07 Thread Richard Lamont
Public bug reported:

Feisty amd64.

ii mozilla-thunderbird 1.5.0.12-0ubuntu0.7.04
ii mozilla-thunderbird-enigmail 0.94.2-0ubuntu1
ii gnupg 1.4.6-1ubuntu2
ii seahorse 1.0.1-0ubuntu1

Following an apt-get upgrade a couple of days ago, in which mozilla-
thunderbird was upgraded to the above version, it has become impossible
to select keys in the Enigmail/OpenPGP extension.

If I go to OpenPGP - OpenPGP Key Management, a window opens but instead
of listing all the public keys on my keyring the table is empty and an
error window opens up saying A script on this page may be busy, or it
may have stopped responding. You can stop the script now, or you can
continue to see if the script will complete. There are two buttons -
Continue and Stop Script.

If I go to OpenPGP - Edit Per_Recipient-Rules, and go through the
dialogs to select a key that way, I end up with the same error message.

For recipients for whom I have already selected a key to be used every
time, I can send and receive signed and encrypted emails normally.

gpg --list-keys works normally.

[Bug 81142] 16:9 display geometry wrong

2007-01-23 Thread Richard Lamont
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kino

Edgy on amd64
Intel G965 integrated graphics (i810 driver)
kino 0.90-1ubuntu2

When viewing 16:9 video the image is squashed into a 4:3 area within the
correct 16:9 area, with junk at right hand side of area, when displayed
at 50%. At 100% and maximum size image is squashed and shifted left of
centre within the black area.

(NB the same package on i386 with nVidia MX400 (nv driver) does not

Yes, I should have said http links.

It does that for me too, at least some of the time, but it gets the
wrong document from the list.

For example, on page 3, if I move the cursor over Standards conversion
in Germany (1959) a box appears, saying
http://www.bbc.co.uk/pubs/reports/1963-07.pdf;, which is the URL for
another paper in the list titled T-type coaxial notch filters for use
at VHF. If I click on it I get the latter. Going back to the same link
later may retrieve a different (but still wrong) document.

The same problem occurs on a machine with Intel G965 integrated

I can't believe the priority for this has been set at low. First
impressions count, and this makes ubuntu look like a dog's breakfast.

Kernel needs building with Marvell PATA configured under the new

respectively, then did sudo dpkg-reconfigure usplash (not sure if this
actually required), and it fixed the problem.

The vga=0x315 was something I did long before dist-upgrading to Edgy.
It's necessary to get ttys looking reasonable, because LCD displays
don't interpolate.

That error message from update-grub is confusing BTW.

[Bug 68491] Edgy: blank screen between grub menu and X server

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: usplash

I have dist-upgraded from dapper to edgy. Now nothing appears on screen
at boot time between the grub menu and the X server.

I have a GeForce2 MX/MX 400 video card, and I am using the x.org driver,
not nvidia's binary. My monitor is an LCD one of 1600 x 1200 res, with
an analogue connection. (I boot with vga=0x315 to set the tty res to
800x600, and the monitor switches to this res until X starts.)
