[Bug 542784] [NEW] system suspends immediately after wake

2010-03-20 Thread Rob Hughes
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: devicekit-power

This is consistent on a intel P43 chipset system using a core 2 duo
processor running KDE on Karmic w/ all updates as of 11 am Mar. 20th
2010. After setting the system to sleep after an idle period in the kde
power settings, when the system wakes up it again sleeps after about 30
seconds or less. Occasionally, I get a notification that the system will
sleep in 30 seconds, but sometimes it also sleeps again before I can
unlock the screen. It should also be mentioned that at times the screen
doesn't actually lock until this second sleep occurs. Additionally,
waking the system up after the second sleep always allows me to unlock
the screen and continue working. This appears somewhat similar to
425411, but I don't believe it's the same issue. I'm not removing power
from the system while it sleeps nor is this a lap top, and this second
suspend always happens. I also see the following crash after each
attempt to wake the system:

[ 8041.111623] PM: Preparing system for mem sleep

[Bug 81476] Re: feisty - No sound in KDE or GNOME w/ alsa audigy2

2009-12-21 Thread Rob Hughes
So aside from the box that used to be my file server now being
officially dead, I just went ahead and did a clean install of kubuntu
9.10 on the same box, more or less, that I originally reported this on.
From what I can tell, I have working sound, including surround, and
other applications are able to access the sound card. I haven't dug into
the new architecture much. I know there was phonon, etc., all being
discussed, so it may be software mixing, but I don't really care as long
as it works. Most interestingly, I have no asound.conf whatsoever.

[Bug 81476] Re: feisty - No sound in KDE or GNOME w/ alsa audigy2

2009-12-13 Thread Rob Hughes
We didn't get into another house until this year. I've started cabling
for the network, but won't be finished for a couple days. Then I have to
get a system working. The box that has this card came back from the
electronics guys, but I haven't fired it up yet since my /home is
mounted from nfs. Sorry. I guess close it if you need to. Getting this
tested just hasn't been that high on my priority list. Or, if all the
systems boot, I might actually get around to trying this sometime within
the next few weeks, as I need to get my network/lab rebuilt.

[Bug 81476] Re: feisty - No sound in KDE or GNOME w/ alsa audigy2

2008-09-23 Thread Rob Hughes
Don't know. The system that this was happening on was in a house that
burned down. I haven't gotten into permanent housing, so I haven't even
thought about trying to build another system until it does. I might be
able to do some testing in another month or so.

I'm not running KDE4. I might be willing to try it after the race season

thus far with 4 indicate that it's not ready for prime time yet.

issue, or an nvidia driver, but this hasn't happed for a rather long
time.

yeah, well, my house burned a little while back(no, I'm not kidding), so
I can't test this right now. they tell me it'll be 2-3 more months
before we can move back in, so I'll have to wait until then when I can
get that system back.

[Bug 94412] Re: Expire folders from file menu does not work with IMAP

2008-03-02 Thread Rob Hughes
No problem ;) Yes, the fact that you're using a single folder would
explain a lot. The expire function will work *if I refresh the folder
first* by clicking on the folder and letting it load all the headers.
But if I just do an expire all folders from the menu, then it fails. So
I guess maybe the best way to state this is that expire fails for
folders that haven't been refreshed, even though kmail shows the proper
number of mail entries.

Maybe it doesn't know what the dates are for each mail until the headers
are refreshed, but only the total number of mails in a folder? My mail
gets sorted into folders by rules running on the server, so the client
doesn't ever seen a specific email until i enter the folder it resides
in and click on it.

OK, found some problems. The /etc/kde4/kdm directory is empty except for

message after uninstalling and reinstalling kdm from kde 3, though the
actual error may be different. Also, doing a dpkg --purge kdm-kde4

[Bug 180169] [hardy] /dev missing some entries, others have wrong permissions

2008-01-03 Thread Rob Hughes
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: udev

After a dist-upgrade, i'm see the same as in this thread:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=613758

I searched, but couldn't find a bug report. As of now, I can't start X
due to a missing /dev/input/*, I have no sound, since the /dev/snd/*
entries are missing. There's probably other things missing as well. I
tried reverting to an old kernel where everything worked, but that made
no difference. Installed version of udev is 117-3.

[Bug 165189] Re: cannot switch VTs from bulletproof-X

2008-01-01 Thread Rob Hughes
Here are the logs. It took me a bit to figure out that bpx isn't called
when kdm fails to load ;) Anyway, running failsafeXServer directly
doesn't load bpx. It starts to load, but then aborts. I included the log
xorg.log from that session as well, just in case you want to look at it.
I don't see any fatal errors in it.

Since I couldn't even get into a bpx session directly, do you still want
me to try running the last command there?

[Bug 72565] Re: Swapped nforce4 boards - now no eth0

2007-11-26 Thread Rob Hughes
OK, then why is only the forcedeth and skge driver listed, if this is so
important? I removed everything from iftab, and the network comes up
fine. Also, even though forcedeth is listed as being permanetly assigned
eth0, it was not assigned the name eth0. After swapping boards, it was
named eth1 until I removed the hardcoded MAC in iftab. So are you sure
this works the way you think it does? Because my experience would
indicate otherwise. Granted, I could be missing something obvious here,
so if so, please explain so I can properly understand and support Ubuntu
systems.

[Bug 165189] cannot switch VTs from bulletproof-X

2007-11-26 Thread Rob Hughes
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

If X fails to start, I cannot switch away from the VT that X is running
on via ctrl-FX. If X starts normally, then this works as expected. I've
looked at the x logs, and the only difference I can see is that the VESA
driver loads instead of the normal nvidia driver. I can reproduce this
on my system pretty much as will. If additional information is needed,
please let me know.

[Bug 72565] Re: Swapped nforce4 boards - now no eth0

2007-11-03 Thread Rob Hughes
Sorry, I'd forgotten about this. Someone was able to clue me in to the
fact that the MAC address of the old NIC was hard coded in a file,
though I can't remember which one now. Once I removed it from there, I
again had eth0. Sorry, I know that's probably not much help.

[Bug 72565] Re: Swapped nforce4 boards - now no eth0

2007-11-03 Thread Rob Hughes
One other important point, I did not hard code the MAC, so I disagree
with your statement that this is not easily reproducable. And so I'm
moving it back to new. This is something done by the install process,
not the user. I also dug back through some old threads, and found that
the solution was to edit /etc/iftab and remove the MAC from there. So
unless you can assure me that the installer no longer adds the MAC
address of cards to iftab, then this bug needs to stay open, since it
probably affects a lot more than just nforce boards.

After some dinking around, I found that in my .xsession-errors file, I
was seeing a stack smashing error for xgl. Removing xgl lets me login.

[Bug 113067] Re: gdm hangs before login

2007-09-11 Thread Rob Hughes
I'm seeing something similar, I think, in gutsy. After recent xorg
updates, I can't login with any user via either GDM or KDM, except the
two failsafe options. I enter the user/pass, and get just the busy
cursor. If I login to the failsafe terminal, I can run kdestart or
whatever and that works. In my .xsession-errors file, I see a lot of
references as follows:

[debug log]
max lines = 1000
Checking for nVidia: present.
Starting Xgl with options: -accel xv:fbo -accel glx:pbuffer -nolisten tcp
-fullscreen -br +xinerama

startkde: Starting up...
ksplash: cannot connect to X server :1

GDM logs don't show anything unusual, nor does the messages file. It
should also be noted that I do not have desktop effects enabled. Nor am
I using compiz/beryl.

[Bug 66573] Re: nspluginviewer hangs up whole X server

2007-08-13 Thread Rob Hughes
Installing libgtk2.0-0_2.10.11-0ubuntu3_i386.deb will resolve this
issue. I can reproduce whether I've run firefox or not, and on a freshly
booted system if I have libgtk2.0-0_2.11.6-1ubuntu3_i386.deb installed.
I'm running gutsy. Never had the problem before upgrading. This is also
probably a duplicate of other bugs that are open involving high CPU and

I still have to click a folder before it will properly expire the
contents of the folder. For example, in one folder, I had 521 messages

then clicked the folder, which still showed 521 messages. I then right-
clicked and chose expire folder, and 111 messages were deleted.

[Bug 94412] Expire folders from file menu does not work with IMAP

2007-03-21 Thread Rob Hughes
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdepim

KMail Version 1.9.6/KDE 3.5.6/Feisty connecting to IMAP server. All
folders except inbox have been individually marked as expire read mails
after 30 days and expire unread mails after 30 days, with permanently
delete as the action. These folders are not subfolders of the inbox, but
separate IMAP folders. I then select expire all folders from the file
menu, however, few, if any, mails will be deleted. As a sanity check, I
run evolution with a virtual folder set to find all mail over 30 days
old, and 1000 emails will show up in the virtual folder. I would think
that if kmail properly expired the folders, many fewer emails should be
found. If I then go folder by folder and refresh each folders contents,
and expire each folder individually, this works. But with a few dozen
folders, this is a somewhat onerous task, just to do house cleaning on
my mailbox.

[Bug 81476] Re: feisty - No sound in KDE or GNOME w/ alsa audigy2

2007-01-27 Thread Rob Hughes
So I take back what I said earlier. It doesn't work, even with the
modified asound.conf, nor does it work with no asound.conf/.asoundrc.
With no asound.conf, I get basic functionality for one application. In
other words, basic 2-channel sound works, one app at a time on a card
which supports hardware mixing. But any attempts to use surround sound
of any type results in a device not available from the xine engine.
I'd always been under the impression that the message meant the device
wasn't there. A bit of strace shows that the device is just locked. So
my card supports hardware mixing, but the alsa drivers don't seem to be
able to use it.

Bottom line is I've lost both the surround sound capability I've had for
a few years now since upgrading to feisty, as well as being able to use
multiple sound-related apps simultaneously, whatever the root cause
might be.

[Bug 81476] Re: feisty - No sound in KDE or GNOME w/ alsa audigy2

2007-01-26 Thread Rob Hughes
Since you can't get 5.1 audio without an asound config of some type, and
since everything on my system is configured to use multi-channel audio,
I suppose the answer would be no. You'd get an entirely different error
regarding plug:surround51.

I think the most annoying thing is that the alsa drivers as shipped just
silently fail in this case.

[Bug 81476] feisty - No sound in KDE or GNOME w/ alsa audigy2

2007-01-25 Thread Rob Hughes
Public bug reported:

The following is repeatedly printed to the console:

ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:831:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to create IPC
semaphore

I've also tried compiling 1..0.14.rc2, but the same error occurs, so
this appears to be upstream in the base alsa code.

The problem is that on my audigy 2, I get no sound when alsa is chosen
as the output device type. My asound.conf is unchanged from edgy, where
this worked. And I've booted into windows and verified the hardware as a
basic sanity check. Further, on the ubuntu forums, a couple of other
people have responded to the thread I opened saying that they, too, lost
sound, on other hardware.

Please let me know what information would be useful in trying to debug
this.

2006-12-23 Thread Rob Hughes
I'm not going to argue. I got the update after adding the kubuntu.org
repositories, not before. I can't rule out the possibility that maybe,
just maybe, I did an aptitude update and got nothing, added the kubuntu
stuff, did another aptitude update and got a large update as a mere
coincidence of timing, but I also can't completely rule out the
possibility of the universe being an illusion created by the flying
spaghetti monster. Or perhaps the kubuntu stuff got added into the main
repositories as well. I don't know. And I haven't received any updates
to the base KDE stuff since. So you do what you want. I don't seem to be
able to reproduce the problem any longer, either way.

Edgy, as I said in the original report, running whatever was in the
repositories at the date the report was filed. As you know, Edgy was
released with 3.5.5, which is what I believe I was running at the time.
But since then, kubuntu.org released an additional 3.5.5 (3.5.5a?)
update which seems to have fixed the problem. However, I had to
specifically add the kubuntu repositories to my sources.list. The fix
does not seem to be present in the main k/ubuntu repositories.

[Bug 66496] kernel losing interrrupts from secondary video card

2006-10-16 Thread Rob Hughes
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.17-10-generic

I have an ABIT AN8-SLI board with 2 BFG 7800 GTX cards. I frequently
find localhost kernel: [17183943.456000] Disabling IRQ #58 and errors
regarding lost IRQs on 58 in the dmesg output, and general system
instability. IRQ 58 has been traced to the secondary card. I have tried
disabling APIC and ACPI without positive results. Adding the irqpoll or
irqfixup options to the kernel line prevents the lost IRQ messages, but
causes other problems. Since I've been told by the UBUNTU devs that I
should open a bug for the specific issue I'm experiencing, rather than
for irqpoll/fixup causing locks, I'm now doing so. Please let me know
what additional information is needed to attempt to resolve this issue.
Neither NVIDIA, nor ABIT, nor BFG have been any help whatsoever, instead
choosing to point fingers at the other.

[Bug 62994] evolution-exchange saturating both cores of SMP system

2006-09-29 Thread Rob Hughes
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution-exchange

I have a AMD 4400, and from time to time when doing something that will
draw a new window (start a new email, access the calendar, etc.),
evolution-exchange will suddenly and for no apparent reason drive both
cores of my system to near-100% utilization. The last time this
happened, I was typing in an email address (with the system set to
automatically look up addresses). Since sometimes the system will
recover, I waited about 10 minutes. When it didn't, I did a kill -6
against the pid, and got this:

[Bug 60635] irqpoll causes cdrom_pc_intr: The drive appears confused (ireason = 0x01)

2006-09-15 Thread Rob Hughes
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.17-7-generic

After adding irqpoll to the kernel line, dmesg is filled with the
following:

hdc: cdrom_pc_intr: The drive appears confused (ireason = 0x01)

This was also occurring in earlier versions of the kernel. This
parameter is needed to work around another hardware problem on my
system. Components are are follows:

Abit AN8-SLI (BIOS 20)
2 BFG 7800 GTX PCIe cards
2 GB OCZ Platinum DDR-400
Sony DDU1615 (hdc) and DW-Q28A (hdd), connected to nvidia secondary IDE channel.

Removing irqpoll from the kernel line stops the errors, but causes lost
interrupts on the 7800 cards.

Well, I spoke too soon. I was able to get in and out of an app twice,
but after a reboot, the system just hard locks again. I'll keep trying
to capture the oops or whatever is happening.

2006-08-25 Thread Rob Hughes
As a test, I upgraded to the 8776 driver last night. The system no
longer locks. There are still other problems, like the new evdev blows
chunks and fails to initialize about half the time, but that's a
separate issue.

Still trying to replicate. So far, X either just hard locks, or using
pci=conf1, X segfaults with the above error. I may see about relocating
this system so I can hook a console cable to it.
