[Bug 508248] Re: Screen flickers once in a while, not whole screen, one small stretch at bottom middle
I believe I have the same bug but I'm not sure. We have some older Gateway T6524's running 32bit installs of Karmic. We get flickering screens when launching some apps: Firefox, Google-Earth, AutoCad, Blueprint software, Topographic software, and so on. Sometimes the machine flicker on and off for a few seconds and sometimes they just go totally black and then come back on. Management is not going to spend money on new machine with this economy and this may be simply an issue caused by older hardware; However, we never had any problems with previous versions of Ubuntu and we started with Gutsy. Below is a 'lshw listing, I hope this helps someone help us. The CIO isn't happy right now with Karmic. Solved. Mr. Muškovac, I appreciate the advice about Gnome Do. We installed and it solved our problems. Employees are able to drag and drop their favorite applications into it just like Kiba-Dock. Actually it is far better than Kiba-Dock because of its features and plug-ins. Gnome Do is a very scalable dock. Thank you again for your solution. It worked like a charm. [Bug 502813] [NEW] Graphics not rendering text
Public bug reported: Fresh install of Karmic on three different Computers. Installed kiba- dock_0.1-1.2_i386.deb Text is not rendered at all. All Kiba graphics are blacked out on all computers. This is not a brand name or configuration problem. Graphics for Kiva version 0.1-1.2_i386.deb work fine in these computers previously using Jaunty, Intrepid, and Hardy. Karmic does not render Kiba-Dock text on any PC or notebook. This is not a wish list. We use this application for all workstations at the office. It didn't work on any Dell's or HP workstations either. Not a Kiba problem; this is an Ubuntu problem. This is frustrating after you get employees to finally accept something other than Microsoft and then a new release butchers-up a simple application that they use everyday. [Bug 303634] Re: Kernel update 2.6.24.22 breaks PC's-Notebooks... computertemp; hddtemp; halts splash and boot
Our CIO removed the Ubuntu Servers and went back to Microsoft. He also re-implemented XP workstations to alleviate the malicious attitudes some workers had regarding Ubuntu. And we dual-booted the field engineers and sales personnel notebooks. But most of them are using the XP boot partition. We have Jaunty on the other partitions but it's just too buggy for them to use. They have problems with Skype, sound volume is a big issue for them, CPU's running way too hot, USB devices not recognized, printing, scanning, evolution email working intermittently, and a other quirks. Ubuntu is light years away before it will be accepted by business professionals. Even with all the bugs and glitches in XP; its still better than Ubuntu. Ubuntu worked at one time but its grown into a problematic OS. It simply doesn't work anymore and we don't have time to tinker with the simple things that work in other operating systems. We still have 8.04 LTS running on a few machines and it's fairly stable now. After almost a year of updates things have settled down some. Kernel panic is always a challenge and most employees don't understand. They just want their computer to work so they can do their job. [Bug 365633] Re: DVD+RW PHILIPS PBDV824DP not detected by nautilus and is not mountable
This should not be a question. This is a serious issue with Jaunty. We loaded jaunty on a Clevo notebook running XP. Somehow GRUB blew out the cd/dvd drives. They are not detected. In XP, they aren't even detected in device manager.nothing, nada, simply gone. The cd/dvd aren't even in the registry anymore. However, when you put in a CD, the light comes on, it spins for a couple of seconds, then stops. We checked the BIOS, the drives are there but GRUB did something to break them. We can confirm its GRUB because LILO brought the drives back up. After searching the web, we found hundreds of people with the same problem. Changing this to a question is not beneficial to anyone. This needs to be addressed. The problem can be worked around using LILO, however, LILO breaks with the next kernel update. This happened to us and now we don't even have an OS. Please put this in critical status as our company is on the verge of going back to XP because of this. Our managers are watching this very closely to see how it will be handled. [Bug 107232] Re: Very low volume with HDA/ALC883
OK kernel-janitor, Thanks for keeping up with this bug. I can confirm it's still a problem. We just installed Jaunty on two new Malibal notebooks. We can't get the sound volume up at all. It's so low that a pin dropping will drown it out. We've tried all the recommended solutions to no avail. Nothing seems to work and it's embarrassing for business applications when you can't even show your software products to customers because no one can hear anything. We'll have to drop Ubuntu if this isn't corrected. There's no excuse for this. Ubuntu has a long history of sound issues and it's obvious that nothing is being done about it. We're looking at a launchpad page at this moment and I see over a thousand pages regarding sound/volume issues. What is up with Ubuntu's sound/volume? It's been years and it's a big problem with every release. We have this problem on different makes and models. We've had this same issue over and over with various versions; from Feisty to Jaunty. You guys have got to get this right. It will kill you in the long run. Unfortunately, I believe the long run is already here. I'm going to run your command for auto gather and attached updating I sincerely hope this helps you decipher how we can all overcome this debacle. We are trying very hard to get other companies in the oil and gas industry interested in Ubuntu. One of the biggest complaints we hear about is that Ubuntu is unreliable regarding sound/volume; excluding printers and projectors. Business can tolerate a lot compared to Microsoft, however, having no sound is the bullet that will deliver the kill shot for the Ubuntu OS. People just will not use a system that offers a Cheese-Weenie sound config. What's worse is this issue is very old and it's not being address at all by Canonical. We have all of our machines dual booted with XP on half and Ubuntu on the other half. Sound works fine on all machines when booted into XP, nevertheless, Ubuntu has virtually no sound volume on any of our machines. That goes for desktops, workstations, and field engineer notebooks. So.this is not just an isolated case of some quirky brand or model. Its a very real issue for most brands and models. -- Very low volume with HDA/ALC883 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/107232 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Thanks wieman01your posting #39 saved me. I cleaned my swap file using Secure-Delete. After I rebooted I had no splash. Your solution works: 1. Check that the UUID in /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/resume matches the swap UUID from step 2, if not change resume file. 5. sudo update-initramfs -u 6. [Bug 310524] [NEW] Brodacom STA driver causes bugs in other apps
Public bug reported: After installing 8.10 Ibex I noticed some quirks only evident during wireless connection. I encountered problems after enabling the Broadcom wireless STA driver. It loaded and connected to my network easily; however, I immediately noticed problems and system quirks that did not exist with the wired connection. Internet, admin applications, and graphics programs were sluggish and locked up constantly. Force quit was used much too frequently. Kiba Dock was affected as well; pulse titles were disabled while the STA driver was activated. Enabling the zoom feature caused Kiba to lock up. [Bug 303634] [NEW] Kernel update 2.6.24.22 breaks PC's-Notebooks... computertemp; hddtemp; halts splash and boot
Public bug reported: Recently the Hardy 8.04 updates have been breaking PC's and Notebooks. We've had employees calling during the Thanksgiving Holidays complaining about their computers not working after downloading Ubuntu 8.04 updates. We aren't alone. I've spoken with other business owners and have found out that the 2.6.24.22 kernel updates seem to be the problem but I can't confirm this except on one HP notebook in our engineering department. The /boot/grub/menu.lst shows 2.6.24.22 as the new kernel. The complaints run quite a wide gamut. Boot GRUB errors, splash screen issues, boot up issues, applications locking up, broken plugins, shut- down hangs, programs no longer responding, hddtemp daemons now halting startup, mangled IDE/RAID settings, and many others than I don't care nor have time to list. At this rate we're already losing money when the Holidays are over and we hit the office on Monday to sort it all out. In any event, it's too much for most users to tolerate. The 'grumblings have begun. This has to stop. From a business standpoint, no executive is going to spend money with Canonical server support if they continue breaking PC's with simple updates. The web is plagued with complaints about this. Why spend money with a company for server support when that very company is destabilizing the OS in lieu of improving it? It doesn't make sense. Linux doesn't get many viruses, however, Canonical is re-defining that term with their updates. Sad to say, but it's a fair wager that our management will switch back to Microsoft before the year is out. We've only been using Ubuntu for a year and it's so butchered up now that it's become a worthless OS for business. The frequency of these issues have increased significantly. And we had such high hopes, nonetheless, we pay our employees to work...not work on computers. Not to be snide, discordant, or crass; nevertheless, that's the bare bones of it. Time is money. Someone should tell Shuttleworth and Bacon to fix what they have before jaunting off on a jack-a-lope chase. It's only common sense. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: 8.04 break computers updates -- Kernel update 2.6.24.22 breaks PC's-Notebooks... computertemp; hddtemp; halts splash and boot https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/303634 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Please close this bug report. This seems to be a OEM issue and not an Ubuntu issue. I received my laptop back a 2nd time from HP. They have replaced the Broadcom on board wireless cards twice. Hello Niklas, Thank you for contacting me. What you say makes sense to me now. Yes, broken hardware does not compromise the system. I appreciate the time you took to write and explain all this. I panicked when my notebook went off line and I could not get it working again. I have other computers and will just wait for the pros to fix the bug. I see now that the task of addressing all of these issues is gargantuan. I shouldn't be crying about free software in the first placeI knew that Betas are always a risk. Again, thanks for your input and please stay in touch. I know nobody with any Linux experience and this is all new to me. But this is not a security issue, since a broken WLAN doesn't imply any kind of compromising of your system. There is no way of breaking into your system or any sensible data being exposed due to a WLAN driver not behaving the way it should. No malicious attacker could exploit this fact and attack your system/data/privacy. This is why that's just not a security issue. The security flag is not to indicate how severe/important a bug is (this is what the Importance flag is). There are currently 45323 open bugs here for the Ubuntu project. I'm sure a developer will take care of this bug, but it might take a little time due to the high number of bugs. Hardy has just be released which naturally causes a huge wave of new bugs being reported. So please bear this in mind, since your ticket is just a few days old. No one sweeps anything under the carpet (your bug report is still open and viewable by everyone), you just aren't the only one having issues with Hardy, especially at this particular moment. [Bug 225959] [NEW] Ubuntu LTS 8.04 kernel 2.6.24.16 PERMANTLY breaks BCM4312 on HP dv6000
Public bug reported: Install of Hardy Heron 8.04 32bit breaks HP dv6000 notebooks with on board wireless LAN cards, BCM4312. The initial install was flawless. Heron installed restricted drivers for Broadcom and everything worked fine..for a while. Then everything went South. The system worked for 14 hours before breaking Wireless beyond repair. Nothing is detected any more; no blue light on the PC wireless switch, no wireless connections in Network Managernot even a modem for an air-card. This is a dual-boot with XP;... Wireless hardware is no longer even listed in XP's hardware manager. There is no wireless listed in dmesg. No wireless extensions detected is the end result. I can no longer use a wireless USB dongle or my Sierra 875 Air card even when booting into XP. I'm not sure if any of this can be reversed. I'm fairly sure that my laptop is trashed from this Beta. Can anyone help out with this? ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Visibility changed to: Public -- Ubuntu LTS 8.04 kernel 2.6.24.16 PERMANTLY breaks BCM4312 on HP dv6000 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/225959 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Re: [Bug 200306] Re: kmplayer prevents kde install
Hello Ryan, I'm installing it on Linspire 6.0, which uses 7.4 Feisty. When I 'apt-get update' I can see the 7.4 URL's as they quicly scroll by. Here is a cut and paste from the Linspire Website: [http://www.linspire.com/products_linspire_whatis.php] *Features Benefits* *Ubuntu 7.04* *Linspire 6.0* Ubuntu Baseline Linux OS and Software Applications*X* *X* Debian-core with apt Package Management *X* *X* Linux Kernel Version 2.6.20 *X* *X* Complete Office Productivity Suite - OpenOffice 2.20 *X* *X* Any ideas?
