[Bug 1949630] Re: kmail upgrade to 20.10 mysql corruption / data loss

2021-11-03 Thread SA
Ok - I have a working version based on a new db_data directory (none of
my local mail folders exist)- I've stopped akonadi, replaced the db_data
with the backup I made _after_ the problem started - I don't have a
backup of this prior to the start of the problem.

With the "as it was when the problem occurred db_data" file I get this:

[Bug 1949630] [NEW] kmail upgrade to 20.10 mysql corruption / data loss

2021-11-03 Thread SA
Public bug reported:

I upgraded from 20.04->21.04-21.10

Once at 21.10 everything seem to work fine (yesterday) but today a
massive lot of updates were installed (not unexpected) however during
these updates kmail stopped working.

Once I got around to restarting kmail (no change) I discovered akonadi
had crashed and would not start again. Much digging around later it
seems it is because mysql will not start and much digging around later
it looks like the data in db_data is corrupt. Specifically there is
something wrong with ib_logfile0 and it seems to expect ib_logfile1 to
be present but it isn't.

So at this point I made a copy of this directory and trying loads of
different stuff (found on the internet) nothing has fixed it. Deleting
ib_logfile0 allows akonadi to start and I have my IMAP accounts but
several years worth of mail in my local mail directories has been lost.

I have no idea what has gone wrong. kmail crashed because akonadi
crashed. Akonadi crashed during a big bunch of updates after upgrading
from 21.04 to 21.10. Prior to the crash it appeared to be running fine
on 21.10.

I do not know where to start with recovery of my mail or where the bug
belongs or what the bug is only that akonadi borked during updates and
it appears I've lost emails as a result.

[Bug 1888598] Re: Pulseaudio breaks HDMI audio on sleep/wake

2021-06-24 Thread SA
I have this bug _but_ it went away about two months ago after some
updates but has returned with vengeance a couple of updates ago and
after the latest updates (including kernel and pulseaudio) it's really
borked.

Previously I'd have no sound until I did pulseaudio -k which would fix
everything.

Now if I do this I _still_ have no audio until I run pavucontrol and
reselect my sound device (which pavucontrol says is unavailable), then
restart all my sound producing programs and, because the volume controls
in KDE are broken, I have to restart plasmashell.

pulseaudio 1.13.99
kernel 5.4.0-77-generic

Happens everytime my computer sleeps.

[Bug 1902526] [NEW] arduino font

2020-11-02 Thread SA
Public bug reported:

The package arduino now starts with menu fonts I'd guess appear to be
4pt in size. I can't read any of them, set any option or anything.

It's basically unusuable.

The font size does not appear to respond to any font settings I can find in kde
- I guess there
might be a font setting for menus in the application itself but it is unusable
so I can't set this even if there is.

I expect there is a simple solution to this but I can't find one!

[Bug 1902526] Re: arduino font

2020-11-02 Thread SA
I've tested with arduino 1.8.9 from the unbuntu repos and 1.8.13 from
arduino - same result. My guess is this is not a problem with the
application but a problem with font control in KDE.

[Bug 1902504] [NEW] qapt batch installer

2020-11-02 Thread SA
Public bug reported:

Since upgrading to 20.04 I've been nagged to install some additional

Clicking this brings up "QApt Batch Installer" which then just hangs

install

  Sound via HDMI

Sometimes after resume sound output is disabled. I cannot determine
what causes it but it occurs about 20% of the time. My sound output is
via HDMI and it's usual for the HDMI device to be asleep when the
computer resumes. Normally as the monitor wakes the sound is restored.

[Bug 1901386] [NEW] no sound after resume

2020-10-25 Thread SA
Public bug reported:

Kubuntu 20.04.

According to the GUI tools the sound output is set to HDMI and I can
restore it by selecting any other device and then reselecting the HDMI
device or I can issue pulseaudio -k

[Bug 1899667] [NEW] LO can't send email, probably an apparmour problem

2020-10-13 Thread SA
Public bug reported:

LO can't send email:

LibreOffice was unable to find a working email configuration.

I'm pretty sure this is an apparmour profile problem since LO seems to
want RW perms on something and AA seems not to want to give it. There
lies the full extent on mu debugging expertise in this area.

2017-03-31 Thread SA
Public bug reported:

qapt-batch insists on running but gets stuck "Waiting for authorization"

[Bug 1675938] [NEW] ubuntu-bug produces a duff link if already logged in

2017-03-24 Thread SA
Public bug reported:

ubuntu-bug collects info, packages it, uploads it and opens rekonq to go
to a bug reporting page - all very nice but:

the link it sends rekonq to breaks if you are already logged into
launchpad because all you get is:

Launchpad Home Code Bugs Blueprints Translations Answers
You are already logged in
You are already logged in as XX. If this is not you, please log out now.

So the only way to progress is to log out and start again.

The link also chokes if you want to copy-paste it to another browser -
tricky problem is rekonq is borked...

Probably not a bug in the apport package as such and maybe a problem in
launchpad but annoying nevertheless!

[Bug 1669009] [NEW] libre office paste from konsole font

2017-03-01 Thread SA
Public bug reported:

-- first I don't know if it is libreoffice, KDE or konsole that is
responsible for this but I had to start somewhere and libreoffice is
where the problem is felt...

If I copy-paste (middle mouse button) from a shell (konsole) into
libreoffice (something I do regularly) then since kubuntu 16.xx the
paste text includes font attributes rather than just plain text.

So imagine I edit a document that is times new roman font 10pt and paste
some text in it arrives as 12pt monospace rather than 10pt roman.

I cannot imagine why this might ever be desirable and it is a complete
pain in the arse. Whoever thought this was a sensible idea please
revert it ASAP!

[ this could be libreoffice assuming that middle button pastes want to
be 12pt monospace or plaintext pastes should be 12pt mono or it could be
KDE konsole offering additional unwanted font info in the clipboard]

all current and default packages in kubuntu 16.10

[Bug 1617759] [NEW] kmail search broken

2016-08-28 Thread SA
Public bug reported:

Since moving to kde 16.04 the find email search function in kmail is
returning regardless of the search - the "find in email"
works as expected.

I have "Enable file search" turned off in the system settings
(presumably this means baloo but since it doesn't say I can't be sure,
however turning this on appeared to make no difference anyway) - there
appears to be no control for email searches and there are no errors or
information messages displayed - all searches (incorrectly) return no
results regardless of folder types (local / IMAP etc).

[Bug 1166102] Re: Cannot mix incompatible Qt library

2015-09-22 Thread SA
Scratch that last comment the tarball runs fine at first and then
crashes with the same incompatible QT error as before.

However building openscad from source (openscad-2015.03-1) results in a
working version - building takes ~20minutes and by way of compensation
the new version is nicer.

[Bug 1489077] [NEW] v4l2 can crash computer with badly written userland code

2015-08-26 Thread SA
Public bug reported:

In my simple bit of code to grab a frame from a webcam based on the
example code given here:

https://gist.github.com/Circuitsoft/1126411

I found a badly crafted version would crash the computer (dead except
for flashing keyboard lights).

Simply calling ioctl(cam, VIDIOC_STREAMON, buf.type) twice without
calling VIDIOC_STREAMOFF inbetween causes the crash. I realise this code
is incompetent but it shouldn't require a hard reboot to recover from
it. I guess this might be rather system specific however it seemed worth
reporting.

I can't recall the last time I managed to crash a linux box from
userland...

[Bug 1322407] Re: NFS kernel server creates a kworker with 100% CPU usage, then hangs randomly

2015-01-23 Thread Yuri Sa
Sorry to ressurect an old thread, but I did all of this but the problem
still persisted.

I have some 25+ clients connected to NFS server.

When i dug into the clients, it was 2 of them with connection failures
(one on the eth card, another the cable was damaged)...

When I corrected those problems, my Kworker related to NFS went back to
usual 0.5%

[Bug 1263080] Re: keyboard stops working KDE

2014-03-30 Thread SA
Ok after a quiet period where this did not occur very often it has
started again several times a day - it is more than annoying - since the
only way to fix it is to reboot I lose data each time this happens.

What seems to have made it happen again is the use of an external mouse
but this may be coincidence. There is notihing in the kern.log or
sys.log or xorg.logs that indicates any information.

Any suggestions?

[Bug 1274219] [NEW] can't resize maximised windows / kubuntu

2014-01-29 Thread SA
Public bug reported:

It appears that from kde 4.11.3 / kde 13.10 that maximised windows in
KDE cannot be resized by dragging the borders - this has been possible
in all previous versions of KDE and is very useful.

I've seen this thread https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=324011 and
while I don't fully understand it, it look like the blame is being
placed at the foot of the oxygen theme which should but doesn't support
borders.

There is a patch against this but it looks like the kde developers are
refusing to import this into 4.11.x and are only willing to let it in
kde 5.

Could kubuntu accept this patch please? this is an incredibly annoying
problem - enough so that we have several machines that will stay at
13.04 until this is fixed! (btw anyone know an easy way to revert a
distro upgrade to reverse this one the test machine we put to 13.10?).

[Bug 1263080] Re: keyboard stops working KDE

2013-12-21 Thread SA
I think I have a lead on this problem - it appears to be solved for me
(no problems in the last 24hrs) but the solution is a little bizarre
and points to a deeper problem:

power devil also appeared to have a problem since the updates sometimes
being unresponsive and has been reporting this delightfully
uninformative error:

PowerDevil::Action::trigger: Unsatisfied policies, the action has been
aborted

Through trial and error by, selecting and deselecting power management
options, I tracked this error down to the option:

On AC Power: Display Brightness

- by deselecting this option the .xsession message has vanished and
since then the keyboard has been working fine and the xmodmap setup has
stuck without being forgotten.

[Bug 1263080] [NEW] keyboard stops working KDE

2013-12-20 Thread SA
Public bug reported:

Since a few updates over the last two weeks the keyboard on my laptop
(macbook air 4.2) stops responding 2-3 times a day on light use. I find
no messages looking at the system logs (via dmesg). KDE seems unaware
of the problem. The mouse works and the only way I can fix the
problem is to use the mouse to logout or reboot. I cannot use the
keyboard to switch to a console screen. The only button that does
anything is the power button.

Previous to the last two weeks it has been fine although I recall a
similar problem a year or so ago (I think this was less frequent and one
day just was fixed presumably after some update).

I use xmodmap to remap the apple keys to mouse buttons to overcome the
lack of a three button mouse and during the same period I've had a few
instances recently when this remapping has been forgotten and has
needed to be reapplied.

I have also noticed that when the keyboard is dead the caps lock key and
the keyboard backlight don't work (caps lock key is a good test since it
normally lights up).

[Bug 1263080] Re: keyboard stops working KDE

2013-12-20 Thread SA
Also - not 100% sure but the battery monitor widget appears to die at
the same time and it seems to occur more often shortly after the
computer wakes up. The forgetting the xmodmap settings problem is
happening many times a day now and is really irritating although can be
fixed without losing data. I can find no errors in any logs.

[Bug 1194151] Re: movies don't play libreoffice impress

Basically the problem is:

(1) the libreoffice packages didn't ensure gstreamer is installed
(2) libreoffice produces uninformative errors

Unless I uninstall ubuntu-restricted-extras and gstreamer1..0 I can'r
reproduce.

[Bug 1178534] Re: error processing grub-efi-amd64 (2.00-13ubuntu3) in 13.04

2013-07-12 Thread SA
Yep I have this problem - very frustrasting that the 13.04 install can't
handle this nicely. Resorted to the boot-repair utility on the linux-
secure disk (formally ubuntu secure). This got the system booting but
left this error which occurred everytime I installed something.

The dirty hack from Red above fixed the error but I don't know if
whatever caused it will bite back later.

The install bug needs fixing and the script needs to not fail. BTW for
somereason everything just worked on a HDD but all this trouble
occured when I tried to install on an SSD -no idea why. If you got here
looking for ubuntu fails to install on SSD grub then get boot-repair
and run it from a live CD, repair the SSD boot (gave me erros but
worked), boot and if you experience this error complain (and use Red's
hack).

[Bug 1200417] [NEW] 13.04 won't install on SSD

2013-07-11 Thread SA
Public bug reported:

Tried again and again to install 13.04 on my new SSD - it goes fine
until it tries to install the boot loader then various does nothing,
reports some kind of bug error and tries to send an error report but the
machine reboots before you have time to type or says something like
/boot/grub is not readable by grub on boot then reboots.

I've tried various ways of formatting the disk and various methods of
manually installing grub (asks for grub efi but partition table is
msdos?).

Installs on on the HDD installed in the system _but_ I want to boot and
run the system from the SSD.

Now what?

[Bug 1197193] Re: akonadi dead

2013-07-03 Thread SA
I saw this but...

Even if I knew what database was corrupted (and where it was), what
would I do with the data once the tables had been dumped? I mean it
isn't apparent that I would be able to reconstruct the akonadi databases
in any meaningful way to get kmail and kpim working again with my data.

[Bug 1197193] Re: akonadi dead

2013-07-03 Thread SA
I've resorted to deleting everything in my home directory containing
akonadi once all the directories were gone stuff started to work
again. I had to reconfigure kmail to find my mail folders and I think
I've lost my calender (since I'm using it as a front end for google
calender I think I can get most of this back).

I have no idea what the problem was but it is a bug that so much could
be so fragile and that the recovery is so difficult.

[Bug 1197193] [NEW] akonadi dead

2013-07-02 Thread SA
Public bug reported:

I rebooted my computer (at which point it was fine) on reboot nothing
that requires akonadi works.

I cannot access any of my email or my calendar which is pretty important
to me.

Everything hangs on starting Akonadi server...

In the akonadi server conf I eventually get a load of errors (below):

I'm guessing the DB is screwed and that likely means I'm screwed?
whatever the problem the consequence seems pretty drastic and the fix
beyond what is reasonable so this should (at the very least) be more
robust!

Any suggestions as to what I do next?

This could be because you hit a bug. It is also possible that this binary
or one of the libraries it was linked against is corrupt, improperly built,
or misconfigured. This error can also be caused by malfunctioning hardware.
We will try our best to scrape up some info that will hopefully help
diagnose the problem, but since we have already crashed,
something is definitely wrong and this may fail.

It is possible that mysqld could use up to
key_buffer_size + (read_buffer_size + sort_buffer_size)*max_threads = 568168 K

Hope that's ok; if not, decrease some variables in the equation.

[Bug 1194151] [NEW] movies don't play libreoffice impress

2013-06-24 Thread SA
Public bug reported:

I prepared a presentaion on my laptop under k 12.10, now I've moved it to my
desktop (13.04) it won't
work. On loading it takes an _age_ around 30s to render each page and is
frozen while it waits.
It won't play an embedded movies.

Testing shows that a presentation without movies in it behaves just fine -
adding a movie to creates the same
problem as above.

The odd thing is that will it is so slow and is dead between pages it is
not using any CPU as measured by top.

It is also spamming the console with:

(soffice:11475): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_object_set: assertion `G_IS_OBJECT
(object)' failed
(soffice:11475): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_object_set: assertion `G_IS_OBJECT
(object)' failed
(soffice:11475): GStreamer-CRITICAL **: gst_element_get_bus: assertion

`GST_IS_BUS (bus)' failed
(soffice:11475): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_object_unref: assertion
`G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed

Which may or may not be related to the go-slow / don't play movies

I had to install

ubuntu-restricted-extras and all the gstreamer plugins manually for
gstreamer1.0 (0.1 had been installed correctly)

So this looks like an incorrect set of dependencies somewhere and
terrible error reporting that looks the responsibility of libreoffice.

[Bug 1173529] Re: In kubuntu launching firefox new windows start minimised (after upgrade to 13.04)

2013-04-27 Thread SA
Ok - this appears fixed - I'm not 100% sure how but in a fit of
frustration I hammered cntrl+N in firefox and the first 15 windows
appeared minimised but subsequent ones appeared normally. After
deleting all the minimised windows command line, panel and ctrl-N
launches all work as expected!

[Bug 1173534] [NEW] Since upgrading to kubuntu 13.04 skype seg faults on launch

2013-04-27 Thread SA
Public bug reported:

Need I say more at this point:

:59 skype

First time I ran it nothing happened for an age - I ran top and noticed
that apport was running and consuming loads of CPU then skype segfaulted
and no skype segfaults seemingly instantly every time. I have tried
reinstalling via synaptic to no avail.

** Description changed:

Since upgrading to kubuntu 13.04 my computer won't sleep properly:

Under 12.10 it behaved perfectly, now:

  It sometimes sleeps when instructed
  It sometimes shuts down

When woken: I get one of the following:

  straight reboot
tries to wake up and then freezes
tries to wake up and Ooops then freezes (since it is frozen I have no
diagnostics apart from some console noise)
tires to wake up, complains about disks, Ooops and then freezes

- Kubuntu is set to sleep on the power button and has never once managed
- it successfully since the upgrade -
+ Kubuntu is set to sleep on the power button and has never once managed it
successfully since the upgrade -
