[Bug 1316901] Re: Wrong screen rotation at login

2015-04-28 Thread Saint DanBert
I, too, have this problem. I'm running Linux Mint 17.1 which is based on
*buntu 14.04.
I have a ThinkPad X220-tablet. As I recall, I had a similar issue with
earlier editions of Mint
based on *buntu 12.04.

{SOAPBOX}
Now that tablets and 2-in-1 laptops are fashionable, this user would
appreciate some attention paid to the various aspects of Thinkpad X60t, X61t,
X200t, X201t, X220t, and later models. X11/Xorg configuration has evolved from
manual edits to auto-magic configuration making it very difficult for folks to
make reasonable, much less optimal, use of their now very cool workstations.

[Bug 1338223] Re: Tasksel has deleted all my data!

2014-07-20 Thread Saint DanBert
I had this same problem except that I was trying to install 'OpenSSH server'.
My workstation runs Linux Mint-16 KDE Edition. I had all of the current
patches applied.
I regret that I must post a follow-up to name which edition of 'tasksel' got
used from
the Linux Mint-16 repositories.

[Bug 669586] Re: Thinkpad X61-tablet (7764CTO) crash during sleep, hibernate, resume

2010-12-06 Thread Saint DanBert
This laptop has a built-in SD/SDHC media reader. (I'm not sure what to
report and post -- other than what 'spider' says already -- that will
identify the hardware and driver specifics.)

I wrote a script that will simply un-mount anything mounted to /media/* at the
time of any sort of suspend request.
With that script in place, both suspend-to-disk and suspend-to-ram mostly work.

Mostly works stems from the fact that other connected USB or FIREWIRE items
sometimes result in failure.
I have not discovered scripting that will automatically detect these other
devices and accomplish an automatic
un-mount equivalent.

When the end-user requests suspend using keystroke or button or panel menu
option, manual evasive or corrective
action is possible. When power-management or acpi requests the suspend, manual
intervention is not possible and one
must recover from a panic or other system failure (locked-up, running but not
responding, etc)

Resume also mostly works. I continue to experience intermittent failures to
wake and restart wireless networking
(Intel 4965 AGN), wire networking (Intel 82566MM) and to wake and restart all
aspects of the desktop (Intel GM965/GL960).
Resume failures include:
** wireless radio turned off and does not turn on with wake
(sometimes cycle hardware radio power switch to recover; otherwise system
restart.)
** any attempt to contact the public internet fails with DNS or other server
troubles
(restart required)
** desktop keyboard does not accept input requiring
(sometimes x-server restart will recover; otherwise system restart.)

[Bug 297663] Re: Thinkpad X61 tablet - resume hangs after undocking and subsequent suspend to RAM

2010-12-06 Thread Saint DanBert
My Thinkpad X61-tablet (7764CTO) has various trouble with the Ultrabase(tm) and
suspend:resume.
There is a mechanical button on the left of the ultrabase for end-user to
Request_Undock.
Under win-dose, this causes a request for hibernation and associated power-off
shutdown.
The end-user will then separate the ultrabase and restart the system.
On restart, win-dose will announce that parts are missing (due to ultrabase
disconnect)
but will wake-up in a functional state.

ANALYSIS:
This Ultrabase is a port replicator that includes various network, telephony,
and USB connectors
as well as connectors for the external video monitor. In addition, there is an
UltraBay(tm) for connection
of a CD or DVD or HDD drive or a secondary battery pack.

I suspect that drivers for the various USB hubs and port replications or disk
drives do not
correctly or adequately sweep the desk during suspend and are thus is a
confused state on wake.
It is my experience that confused drivers most often lead to something not
responding or kernel panic
or both.

[Bug 297663] Re: Thinkpad X61 tablet - resume hangs after undocking and subsequent suspend to RAM

2010-12-06 Thread Saint DanBert
While we are on the subject of the Ultrabase(tm) and UltraBay(tm) there
is something else going on.

The UltraBay might be used to hold either a CD/DVD drive or an HDD drive. Each
drive has a custom-to-lenovo
thin profile housing. Under win-dose, the following works:

** Select the tray icon and request remove the CD/DVD drive
** eventually win-dose displays Safe to remove
** mechanically separate the drive from the UltraBase dock
** insert the HDD
** win-dose see the drive and behaves as if a USB or similar external drive
was connected

The end-user can read and write the HDD.
After some time, the end use repeats the above steps requesting removal of the
HDD.
They can then insert the CD/DVD and resume using the optical drive.

Under Ubuntu 8.04 LTS, 8.10, 9.04 and 10.04 LTS:
Problem #1 -- There is no way to request to remove the CD/DVD.
Problem #2 -- If one boots with the HDD, one can request removal of the drive
but a panic or system not responding happens when inserting the CD/DVD drive.
Problem #3 -- If one uses suspend-to-disk to reconfigure, the installed drive
is routinely not available after system restart. A power-off restart is
required to
wake whichever device is in the UltraBase supplied UltraBay.

In short, win-dose supports the UltraBay while Ubuntu does not.

[Bug 669586] [NEW] Thinkpad X61-tablet (7764CTO) crash during sleep, hibernate, resume

2010-11-01 Thread Saint DanBert
Public bug reported:

I have Lucid (10.04 LTS) installed to two Lenovo Thinkpads 7764-CTO.
Both video and wifi are Intel parts. Neither will (1) suspend-to-disk
(hibernate), or (2) suspend-to-ram (sleep).

I expect the following:

SLEEP:
shutdown-like tinkering
blinking moon LED
power-down behavior leaving the moon LED lit
On Wake: immediate display of locked session login page

HIBERNATE:
shutdown-like tinkering
blinking moon LED
cold power-off behavior
nothing lit (we are power-off)
On wake: announce restart or similar
then display the locked session login page

Using the GNOME panel, I select either Suspend == suspend-to-ram
(aka, sleep) or Hibernate == suspend-to-disk. Both options fiddle
then crash with the moon-LED blinking. On wake, neither show any signs
of a restart.

I'd like to get both working, but my focus is on HIBERNATE.
While I'd like to have these available for all of the various power management
events (low battery, idle time, etc) and also for laptop lid closed and opened,
I want to get Gnome panel requests working then worry about the others.

[Bug 576135] Re: Crash on Suspend to RAM in Lenovo T500 Laptop

2010-09-11 Thread Saint DanBert
I'm running both Lucid (v10.04) and Jaunty (v9.04) and have similar
symptoms on both. My hardware is a Lenovo Thinkpad X61-tablet
(7764-CTO).

On suspend:
** screen darkens
** LEDs blink
** rarely do I get a complete spin-down [see note 1 below]
** new moon LED left blinking (power off reboot required)

On wake:
** GRUB menu appears normally [see note 2 below]
** LEDs blink
** option 1 -- kernel panic
** option 2 -- system boot but X11 and network are not use-able (power off
reboot required)

NOTES:
1. It would be wonderful if suspend had reasonable logging. I know this is a
sticky problem,
but so is guessing about what is going on and going wrong.
2. It would be wonderful if GRUB was aware whether there was a suspended
system out there.
Diagnostically, that would tell us that we got some part of a working
spin-down. (It would also
help avoid the snafu where you suspend OS-A then boot OS-B with the suspend
pending.)

Cheers,

2010-09-06 Thread Saint DanBert
Running iwlagn v1.3.27-ks on Lucid (v10.04) I get at least one, if not
several, driver crashes every eight to ten hours. This system runs the
2.6.32-24-generic-pae edition of the linux kernel.

Running iwlagn v1.3.27-ks on Jaunty (v9.04) everything wifi seems to work quite
well.
This system runs the 2.6.28-19-generic edition of the linux kernel.

When I say crash I mean that:
** outwardly, the network seems to be running -- netmanager or wicd show
connected, radio is on, etc
** ping fails to connect to anything
** dig fails to find any DNS server
** browser times out on all link attempts, etc
** armed with the above symptoms, I can check the logs and find the problems
** I must reboot to wake up the wifi network so I suspect that the driver and
firmware are hosed

[Bug 277634] Re: Intel Pro/Wireless 4965 AG stops transferring data within a few minutes

2010-06-14 Thread Saint DanBert
I loaded Ubuntu Lucid (v10.04) and now my intel 4965 agn wireless does
not work at all under Linux. It works fine under winXP on the dual boot
side.

I've used 'wavemon' and see reasonable signal strength and other details
for my access points.

I use 'wicd' instead of network-manager. It shows my access points and then
fails to connect saying bad password.
I've confirmed the string being tried using the debug-mode for wicd. I use the
same string from winXP and get
a good connection every time. Along with the fact that other hosts connect
fine seems to rule out hardware.

I'll gladly diagnose using whatever you suggest. I'm completely stumped
on this one.

I have this same problem, and variations on this problem running Hardy and
Jaunty and Lucid on Thinkpad laptops using the
Intel 4965AGN wireless card and BOTH wicd and network-manager. (I prefer wicd
for other reasons.)

Symptoms:
** data stops moving
** no indication that the connection dropped based on wicd notifier or
network-manager notifier
** 'wavemon' reports good signal strength even though no data traffic happens
** hardware works find to same access point, security, passphrase, etc when
using the winXP dual-boot
** under Lucid, one system will never authenticate claiming bad password
even though the debug-mode reports
the correct string in use

I don't know enough to report more information about versions of whatever is in
use. I'll gladly try whatever makes sense
if someone is willing to point me toward the steps needed.

[Bug 190117] Re: Synaptic won't accept external drive sources disks

2010-06-14 Thread Saint DanBert
Running Lucid and Jaunty while network down.

Tried to use distro DVD to add packages. Synaptic reported that it could not
find the drive etc.
I used a shell and found /dev/cdrom, /dev/cdrw, /dev/dvd and /dev/dvdrw. I
could use 'ls' to view
the contents of the media. I could use 'eject ' to spit the media drawer
out. The desktop
file manager saw the media as mounted. I could unmount and remount from the
desktop.
Synaptic did not see the package DVD whether the media was mounted or unmounted.

I know that the original post was much older, but this problem persists
