Re: [Bug 106232] Re: No window icon with Blender

2008-06-20 Thread Schalken
William Grant ( https://launchpad.net/~wgrant ) has a 2.46 deb for both
Hardy and Intrepid in his PPA which correctly sets the window icon. It seems
this was fixed upstream at some point between 2.45 and 2.46.

Is 2.46 planned for inclusion in Intrepid? Could we get it in hardy
backports?

2008/6/18 BeBraw [EMAIL PROTECTED]:

Oh. Forgot to mention that I tested this on Ubuntu Hardy (Gnome). No

[Bug 231717] Re: Some tray icons cannot be moved individually

2008-06-02 Thread Schalken
Tray icons can't be moved around. Only the notification area applet,
which the tray icons sit inside of, can be moved with the handle to the
left of the icons, and this will move the applet and all its containing
icons as one unit as you describe. The volume control icon, if that's
what you're comparing to, won't move with them, because that is actually
a panel applet in and of itself. Note that tracker-applet and nm-applet
are not actual panel applets, they are just tray icons that sit in the
notification area (which is an applet).

Sorry if I've missed the point of this bug report entirely.

[Bug 138343] Re: evince consumes a lot of memory (1.5 GB VM)

2008-03-28 Thread Schalken
I have recently been hit by this bug on Gutsy.

Opening http://www.foxkeh.com/downloads/history/history-foxkeh.pdf
resulted in 600MB memory usage in Best Fit zoom level (about 70%),
little did I know that trying to zoom in to 400% to get a closeup of one
of the images would result in Evince consuming all 1GB of my memory and
2.5GB of my swap, grinding my system to a halt to the point of me
needing to cut the power.

Yes. Ouch.

2007-04-21 Thread Schalken
Confirmed.

As a new default user, with any font or anti aliasing setting the text
is blurred (no hinting) and looks partially bold.

As my user however (upgraded from edgy) this only occurs either without
anti aliasing or when using the default Times font. All other programs
also suffer from this.

Also there is never any subpixel hinting like the rest of GNOME, but
thats a different problem altogether.

[Bug 95023] Re: [Feisty] Network manager doesn't allow static IP configuration

2007-04-20 Thread Schalken
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 92299 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/92299

This is confirmed, however there has been some obscurity with regard to
what the actual problem is.

Quite simply, when an interface is placed under Network Manager's
control by checking Enable roaming mode for that interface under
Admin Networks, Network Manager will attempt to connect the
interface with DHCP (dynamic IP), and if there is no response it calls
itself connected by filling in the connection information with null IPs
(0.0.0.0) (it isn't really connected). There is no opportunity to tell
Network Manager that the network instead requires a static IP.

The only way to configure an interface with a static IP is the old
fashioned way, without Network Manager (by unchecking roaming mode in
Admin Networks and filling in the required configuration). This
allows the interface to connect, and Network Manager knows it is
connected and hence displays the connected notification icon, however
because the interface is not under Network Manager's control it does not
show the blinking screens for network activity.

For those switching between static and dynamic IP (DHCP) networks, you
should save a location in Admin Networks for each static IP
network with the interfaces properly configured for, and another with
the interfaces configured for roaming mode for when you are in a
dynamic IP network.

All in all this could be considered a bug or perhaps Network Manager was
never supposed to handle static IP networks (hence leaving it to the
Admin Networks dialog). Either way it does not prevent users from
connecting to their networks and hence not a critical problem.

And if there is any error in my clarification PLEASE point it out!

[Bug 106259] Wrong icons used in menu and desktop

2007-04-13 Thread Schalken
Public bug reported:

Blender, OpenOffice.org apps, glChess and Sudoku don't use their 22x22px
application icons in their Applications menu entries, but instead larger
ones that are scaled down. This causes blurring compared to the 22x22px
icons (found here: http://tango.freedesktop.org/Tango_Fridays) which
have 1px borders and some simplification. Beagle's notification area
icon also suffers from this.

When dragging these icons to the desktop and 'stretching' them, we find
that Blender and glChess have a SVGs, while OpenOffice.org and Sudoku
have only 48x48px bitmaps.

It should be made sure that all the 16x16px, 22x22px, 32x32px, 48x48px
(same as the SVG?) and SVG icons for applications, when available, are
packaged and properly configured for use in their respective areas.

I am using Tango on Feisty Fawn, however the problem also exists for

Blender's icons are found on http://tango.freedesktop.org/Tango_Fridays
under Friday November 3rd, OpenOffice.org's under Friday November
17th, glChess's under Friday November 10th, and Gnome Sudoku's under
Friday December 15th. There are also icons for other programs there
that are not being used, such as Celestia and gFTP.

I am a little confused. Are application icons the choice of the package

[Bug 105844] Instability in Democracy Player [fesity]

2007-04-12 Thread Schalken
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: democracyplayer

The latest instance of Democracy Player for Feisty (0.9.2.1-2.1ubuntu2)
produces errors of various sorts when starting playback.

The first was a segfault which I was unable to reproduce.

The second is a GStreamer error (I thought it used xine?) where it
reports the following and democracy fails to play the video.

** (Gecko:14271): WARNING **: Size 115200 is not a multiple of unit size 425040
onBusMessage: gstreamer error: Element doesn't implement handling of this
stream. Please file a bug.
onBusMessage: gstreamer error: GStreamer encountered a general stream error.

The third is an X window system error which closed the program entirely.

The program 'Gecko' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadDrawable (invalid Pixmap or Window parameter)'.
  (Details: serial 69910 error_code 9 request_code 70 minor_code 0)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)
downloader: connection closed -- quitting
Shutting down downloaders...

Also, when starting playback, Democracy seems to open a second window
for a split second. Is there a way to remedy this?

[Bug 105844] Re: Instability in Democracy Player [fesity]

2007-04-12 Thread Schalken
Democracy has now also thrown a few errors while processing the
Diggnation feed and redirects it to the democracy site embedded in the
browser. However, restarting Democracy shows the feed being processed
properly and the first download begins, but has another feed which I
didn't add called odtv2 pointing to nowhere. How come all the errors
that happen only happen once, but not when I try to reproduce them for a
bug report?

Spoke too soon, I was about to say the second window that appears for a
split second seems to have disappeared, but it just came back starting a
Pixel Perfect episode. And it just crashed with the X window error again
while starting a Chasers War on Everything episode. And now the second
time I try it with said episode it throws the Gstreamer error. And the
third time the whole app simply locked up and had to be killed, no
terminal output. I have played all videos in Democracy's folder with
Totem and MPlayer and they are not visibly corrupted.

And now it seems to have trouble moving to fullscreen mode and scaling
the video to full size. :(

Could I get the GDB to work and make sure I run it with GDB each time,
so these errors can be backtraced?

Also should these be several smaller bug reports or one big one since
they are probably linked?

Well I'm afraid I get errors saying that a reverse or previously applied
patch was there already, and after assuming -R there is still one 'hunk'
that failed. Maybe I should just wait for it to be fixed in the repos?

It seemed to half-work before applying the patch anyway, for some reason
(perhaps it was updated without me knowing) but it crashes when trying to
play a second video. I'm not sure whether the maintainer is aware of this
new crash if they tried to fix it already or if there are still patches to

[Bug 104850] Democracy Player should not depend on Mozilla

2007-04-09 Thread Schalken
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: democracyplayer

Democracy player currently depends on Mozilla assumably for its HTML
rendering. If this is true, it should use a HTML renderer that is
packaged with Ubuntu such as GtkHTML or Firefox, so the user doesn't
have to install a second web browser in order to use the program.

Democracy Player also uses scrollbars which do not use the system's Gtk
theme. This is likely caused by its Mozilla dependency which also
suffers from this.

It seems Democracy Player can indeed be compiled against Firefox:
https://develop.participatoryculture.org/trac/democracy/ticket/4325

Using Ubuntu Edgy Eft

[Bug 99690] Firefox crashes on Gtk theme change

2007-04-01 Thread Schalken
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox

When you change the Gtk theme through System Preferences Theme
Details Controls, all instances of Firefox become unresponsive, and
must be terminated. Subsequent openings of Firefox work fine.

This is likely to be caused by GNOME notifying all applications of the
theme change and that they need to redraw.

Using Ubuntu Edgy, Firefox 2.0.0.3, GNOME 2.16.1 and Gtk+ 2.10.6

2007-01-11 Thread Schalken
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: banshee

The scrollbar buttons in Banshee's 'Recommended Artists' plugin (down
the bottom) don't do anything. This could be Mono related.

4. Attempt to scroll the Recommended Artists with the scrollbar buttons.

2007-01-03 Thread Schalken
Has this been fixed yet?

I'm no C++ programmer, but if not, is it any more complicated than this?

- if compiled with required gtk version
  - user same code as other gnome apps
- else
  - use old, non-gnome-like code

please lets discuss the complexities if any

[Bug 58759] Re: Resizing a window is difficult

2006-09-15 Thread Schalken
I suppose it would also make sense for maximised windows when there isnt
a top panel. Everyone likes top just shrow the cursor to the top-
rightmost pixel and click to close the maximised window. That would be
impossible if that pixel were occupied by a 'resize window' area.

In that case this wouldn't be a bug but more of a usability feature.

[Bug 59333] Re: [Bug 59333] Re: gaim window size unrestricted

2006-09-14 Thread Schalken
Okay, so basically:

* Despite being the only acceptable IM app for GNOME, Gaim isn't a GNOME
app, and therefore doesn't have to abide by GNOME's rules.

* GNOME's got it all wrong, people should be able to size a window to
any size they want. It's the same with Windows, Mac and KDE, so they
must have it all wrong as well.

* If a user can't find a window, or a feature in that window, because
they sized it too small it's their fault, not the developers.

Fair enough then.

[Bug 59333] Re: [Bug 59333] Re: gaim window size unrestricted

2006-09-13 Thread Schalken
So are you saying that all applications should have windows that can be
sized down so small that they are not identifiable or widgets (and
therefore features) are hidden from view, and reveal other cosmetic
bugs; or are you saying that Gaim is an exception to the desktop
standard that windows should be restricted to practical sizes, and that
consistency is of no importance?

[Bug 59333] Re: gaim window size unrestricted

2006-09-12 Thread Schalken
Merely a consistency issue. This could also cause small usability
problems because users can size down the window until the window is no
longer identifiable.

So, for example, if they accidentally size it so small it looks like a
piece of rice they will click and click on the window's taskbar entry
wondering where their window is not knowing it's that tiny little bar
that keeps dissapearing and reappearing.

If it's any help, Firefox also has this issue and Dapper's Gaim
(1.5.1cvs) doesn't.

[Bug 16724] Re: Inkscape doesn't use the gnome print dialog

2006-09-11 Thread Schalken
Still in Edgy?

This IS a severe problem, because it practically means you can't print
with Inkscape, since you surely can't expect you're average user to know
how to use that rediculous print dialogue. Ubuntu's supposed to be
usable for normal people.

This should be marked as Medium importance.

Ubuntu devels need to find out how to get --with-gnome-print working or
otherwise leave yet another critical usability problem go unsolved.

[Bug 58998] Re: Gaim's tabs don't function like in Gedit/Epiphany/Terminal

2006-09-08 Thread Schalken
There's a rule I use when programming: While the user is making a
change, they should see the result of that change while they are making
it. This rule is used throughout GNOME and should apply to tab movement
as well as document editing.

I personally don't see how the arrows allows for more precision. After
all, what could be more precise than seeing the tab in its desired
position as you move it? Of course dragging tabs between windows is
important, so if that function is at risk by all means leave the code as
is.

This is just one of the three problems. I don't see how problems 1 and 2
can be difficuilt to fix.

Gaim's tab interface isn't the same as the rest of GNOME's native

annoying in terms of consistency and theming.

  In particular,
Gaim's tabs are not the same height.
The close button is not the same (Gaim tries to use a normal button
instead which doesn't fit)
Dragging tabs works like Firefox (with the little arrows showing where
the tab will be moved) rather than like in GNOME apps (tab moves with the
cursor)

Gaim just needs to use the same code which puts tab handling in the
hands of Gtk/GNOME. I'm led to beleive this is done through the use of
  Gtk Notebook.

Buttons in Ubuntu have an orange glow around them on mouse-over. Close
tab buttons don't, but Gaim's close tab buttons do. This causes the tab
to stretch vertically to make room for the orange glow, and cuts off the
side of the close button's icon. I am in 2.0.0beta3.

I would give a screenshot however the hover glow dissapears with the use
of PrintScreen.

[Bug 12893] Re: Shouldn't put .Trash-$USER on removable devices

2006-09-05 Thread Schalken
It took me a good few hours to figure out why my second hard drive was
still full after deleting everything. (everything was in the hidden
.Trash-me folder)

Nautilus should instead move the file to the user's local trash (located
~/.Trash) as this would be the expected functionality and would keep the
backup of the deleted files. If there is not enough room in the local
drive then prompt the user saying The file x cannot be moved to the
trash. Delete them anyway? You will not be able to recover it. [Skip]
[Skip All] [Delete] [Delete All] [Cancel].

If moving the file from the removable disk to the local trash is
logically impossible, Nautilus should just delete the file.

[Bug 58759] Re: Resizing a window is difficult

Confirmed. (using dapper)

It seems the area above the corner actually belongs to the
minimize/maximize/close buttons. The case is the same with the top left
corner, where the area is occupied by the window icon.

The button's and icon's 'bounding box' (area that they occupy) needs to
be flatter as to make room for the window resizing area above them.

See attachment. Green area allows window sizing. Red area does not.

[Bug 56961] tiny transparent arcs in top corners of maximised window

2006-08-20 Thread Schalken
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubuntu-artwork

This is a bug related to Ubuntu's window border styles.

Most maxmised windows will have the titlebar fill both top corners of
the screen (excluding the panel), making the titlebar appear a solid bar
right across. I beleive this is the proper appearance.

Some windows however, will leave tiny (5x5) transparent arcs in the
corners. These may appear as white/gray (from a maximised inactive
window behind it) or black/brown (from ubuntu's desktop colour behind
it). It's probably safe to assume these tiny arcs are residing from
Ubuntu's rounded corners of unmaximised windows.

You can see a screenshot of the correct bahaviour here:
http://schalken.wubbles.net/corner-right.png
And a screenshot of the problematic bahaviour here:
http://schalken.wubbles.net/corner-wrong.png and here
http://schalken.wubbles.net/corner-wrong2.png

This may be an application-independant issue. In this case the following are
programs i have verified to cause the problem:
Synaptic
Gaim chat window
while these don't (or didn't when I tested them)
Epiphany
Firefox
Gedit
Gimp
