[Bug 851136] [NEW] Radiance slider asset would look better dark
Public bug reported: At the moment the slider used in the Radiance theme, visible in e.g. the Sound Indicator, has got a light pixmap. The light grey colour of the slider against the default background colour of Radiance doesn't look to pretty in my eyes. I would suggest to give the it the same tone of black that is also used for the monochrome icons in the notification are and the play/pause buttons in the sound menu. This would make the slider look better against the light background and would create a more harmonic view. [Bug 805879] [NEW] Behaviour of window controls of parent window with modal dialogue confusing
Public bug reported: The fact that the window controls of maximised applications are incorporated into the top panel in Unity causes confusing behaviour for applications with modal dialogues. Say, you are saving something in Gedit. When the modal save dialogue is open and gedit is not maximised, you can still press the maximise button. Gedit will then expand to fill the whole screen and move its title bar completely to the top panel. The animation used for this implies that the window controls will have moved to the top left corner. This feeling is strengthened by the fact that the modal dialogue has its own window controls on its own, non-maximied window borders. However, when you try to unmaximise the gedit window by going to the top left corner of the Unity top panel, you will discover that there are no window controls there. The window controls, which the user might think were just moved, have disappeared altogether! This could be caused by the fact that the modal dialogue has the focus and that the panel therefore displays the stuff that belongs to the modal dialogue. But I think that this works confusing, since a user should reasonably expect that the window controls of the main window were moved to the top panel, as the animation suggests. Normally what the animation implies is true, because you will switch focus away from the currently active window to the window you are maximising. When you return to the other window, you will have done an action and that is enough to realise that the top panel changed. However, when an application has a modal dialogue, its parent window cannot receive focus, even when you press the maximise button on the parent, its modal child dialogue will keep the focus. This is what causes the confusion. I suggest to make the top panel always display the window controls and menu of the parent in the case a non-maximised modal dialogue is present. [Bug 789596] Re: Canonical doesn't provide updates is a scary message, especially for customers
I think that a positive formulation of the sentence would be best. It should name only those who are accountable, not parties that are not. If Canonical or MOTUs are not involved, don't name them. People might skip over the little word 'not'. Updates for SOFTWARE are provided by VENDOR does seem the best solution for third-party apps to me. I would name the vendor explicitly, so interested managers can check the company's track record without having to look somewhere else on the overview page. For the community maintained packages something like SOFTWARE is made available in Ubuntu by the community. Updates may or may not be provided. The case of PPAs or unknown third-party repositories is a bit difficult, since you may have overlap with earlier versions in official repositories and you cannot easily refer to the name of the repository. However, we can say that Google's official Chrome repository or that of Dropbox are more thrustworthy than myfunrepo.example.com/ubuntu would be. It would be good to say Updates for Google Chrome are (may be?) provided by Google. That's a reasonable statement. However, for myfunrepo.example.com/ubuntu I'd say something like SOFTWARE is made available for Ubuntu by a third-party. Updates may be made available. Furthermore, Canonical will provide updates for Empathy Internet Messaging after October 2012, but in a different release of Ubuntu. Shouldn't that be reflected in the string as well, or would that be too much information? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/789596 Title: Canonical doesn't provide updates is a scary message, especially for customers To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/software-center/+bug/789596/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 789596] [NEW] Canonical doesn't provide updates is a scary message, especially for customers
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: software-center In the overview of software in Software Centre that does not come from the officially supported archives, a warning text is shown informing the user that this particular piece of software is not supported by Canonical, but that updates MAY be delivered by the community/a third- party. It is not only shown for software from community-maintained archvies or for PPAs, but also for software that is on sale. Although this message is factually correct, it is a scary message. Users might get the impression that by default no updates should be expected, but if you are lucky something might be done. Especially for paid applications, this might not be very encouraging towards users. I would suggest to change the warning from a negative formulation to a positive: updates for this software are provided by X. Not Canonical, etc. Furthermore, this message is also shown for packages from the Canonical Partner archive--which is maintained by Canonical, AFAI. Is that desired behaviour? However, as far as I'm aware, Unity 2D is not expected to be stable enough for the 11.04 release, and it will only be used as the default fallback in 11.10. That is another argument in favour of hiding it in the Software Centre. We shouldn't expose something that isn't considered stable in the 'app store', especially when it is not an 'app'. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/721473 Title: Unity 2D should not show up in Software Centre -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 721473] [NEW] Unity 2D should not show up in Software Centre
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: unity-2d Unity 2D shows up in the Software Centre. Currently it is listed under New Applications. They will not notice any changes to their system when they install it, if Unity 2D is suppressed when 3D functionality is available. Not sure if this is driver-related, but I am using the Nouveau driver for my Nvidia Geforce 9600GT, with the experimental Mesa DRI2 driver installed. I am not running Unity, because Compiz currently crashes with the Nouveau DRI2 Gallium3D driver—not sure about the naming here. ;) The crash should be very easy to reproduce: on an up-to-date installation of Natty, install Emerillon, run it and see it never starts. [Bug 717754] [NEW] Jockey proceeds to uninstall 'ubuntu-desktop' and X server in Natty
Public bug reported: Currently the proprietary Nvidia driver in Ubuntu Natty does not work with the X server. Therefore, both packages conflict with each other. Installing 'nvidia-current', or any other Nvidia driver, will remove the X server and with that also 'ubuntu-desktop'. Install the X server, and therefore also 'ubuntu-desktop', will uninstall any proprietary Nvidia driver still present on the desktop. At the moment the proprietary Nvidia drivers are still visible in Jockey. You can install them, and Jockey will proceed to install the 'nvidia-current' or 'nvidia-173' package, depending on your choice. Jockey will even do this when it requires the removal of the X server and 'ubuntu-desktop'. I think that Jockey should refuse to install any driver when it leads to the removal of 'ubuntu-desktop' or such a key element of the desktop as the X server. It should warn the user that it is impossible to proceed and abort. Currently there is a risk that users break their own system and end up without a graphical shell. [Bug 704392] [NEW] Make Ubuntu's default settings the fallback of GNOME Settings Daemon
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-settings-daemon When GNOME Settings Daemon crashes, the system reverts to some baked-in defaults. The icons and settings used are not Ubuntu's default settings, and don't look too pretty. It would be better, I feel, if the baked-in defaults would be Ubuntu's defaults, so that when the settings daemon crashes, your system still looks like Ubuntu and not like GNOME 2.0. [Bug 704392] Re: Make Ubuntu's default settings the fallback of GNOME Settings Daemon
Not resetting at all probably would be the best option, but it could be that the reset happens due to the nature of the GSettings system. When settings are updated, they are immediately changed in applications that use them as well, right? Maybe the reset is presented to applications like regular value changes, so the applications just update their views. In case GNOME Settings Daemon doesn't start right from the beginning, at the start of a new session, I think it would be good to adjust the fall- back values anyway, though. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/704392 Title: Make Ubuntu's default settings the fallback of GNOME Settings Daemon -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 681872] Re: Greek, Modern (1453-) name contains distracting detail
The upstream maintainer writes the following: Quoting Sense Hofstede (se...@ubuntu.com): From Matthew Paul Thomas: The Debian maintainers are correct about the ISO639-2 names. But those names are not for selecting languages, they are for classifying languages. A simple way to demonstrate this is to imagine if someone was to translate Debian or Ubuntu into the Blackfoot language, and someone else was to translate it into the Malecite-Passamaquoddy language. Following ISO639-2 to the letter would require them both to be listed as Algonquian languages, which would be nonsense, because they're mutually unintelligible languages. Algonquian languages is a useful classification, but it's a useless identifier. ISO 639-3 is meant for this. Malecite-Passamaquoddy has the pqm code. No idea about the code for Blackfoot as I can't find it in the standard (it may be listed with another name). ISO-639-2 is known to be less precise than -3. This is why people who create locales use -3 codes. And people who want to display a complete list of languages should use it, too (good luck with 7704 entries). I would be surprised if there is any software in Ubuntu *or* in Debian that uses iso-codes for classifying languages, rather than for offering language choices. So if iso-codes sticks exactly to ISO639-2, then it is not fit for the purpose of offering language choices, and there needs to be a language-codes package or something to override or replace it. Just do it. And be prepared to deal with request with ${random_developer} who will try to teach you that this language should be named this way without, of course, no reference for properly and neutrallmy deal with this. This is why iso-codes is stuck to the standard and, as long as I'll be one of its maintainers, will continue to be. A much simpler solution, though, would be to recognize that the ISO639-2 list is also internally inconsistent. For example, it has items for English, Old (ca.450-1100) and English, Middle (1100-1500) -- but it doesn't have English, Modern (1500-), it just has English. Greek should be treated the same way. The equivalent bug in Launchpad Translations was [Launchpad] bug 81158, fixed in 2007. Whether Rosetta maintainers want to play the game of renaming languages is their problem. That's not a reason for us to do so in iso-codes. And, well, taking Rosetta as reference when it comes at i18n is not really convincing for me, I'm afraid. So, sorry, for being harsh, but if someone feels that Greek, Modern (1453-) is awkward, then get the standard fixed, but do not twist packages implementing the standard. An option could be introducing common_name as we did for ISO-3166 because of the Taiwan issue (and later Macedonia issue). That may happenafter the release of squeeze. I remember seeing Greek being referenced to in a recent iso-codes related changelog. Was this fixed in Ubuntu using a patch already? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/681872 Title: Greek, Modern (1453-) name contains distracting detail -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 685577] Re: Launcher gets in the way when trying to close maximized windows.
We do need to take care to prevent issues with window button dancing making it harder to quickly press the button you want. Currently, when the Unity launcher is set to autohide, most open windows will have their window control buttons in an area that will be covered by an expanding launcher. I'm afraid that this will not be solved by moving only maximised windows' controls to the panel. There will be the non-maximised windows left with their controls in their window border. Often, their corner is placed in an upper corner of the screen. We often see non-maximised windows which are only a tad bit smaller than maximised windows, which means they suffer from the exact same problem as maximised windows. When the controls of maximised windows will be moved to the panel, they will move somewhat to the right of the screen. When we will leave the non-maximised windows' controls at their original position they will be further to the left than the controls of maximised windows. This seems to be an undesirable situation to me. It could be worth considering moving all window controls to the panel, but I'm not sure if that would be the way to go, because already I find that it is not always clear that the window controls of maximised applications that are placed in the *panel* belong to the changeable window below the screen element that is always there. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/685577 Title: Launcher gets in the way when trying to close maximized windows. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 681872] Re: Greek, Modern (1453-) name contains distracting detail
The Debian bug report has been marked as Won't Fix, because the maintainers don't like to deviate from the official standard. The current naming of Greek is the ISO standard, which can be observed at http://www.loc.gov/standards/iso639-2/php/code_list.php, and they do not want to change that. We won't change the standard. iso-codes is a package that provides a list of names as they are in a standard. Unless one of my comaintainers wants to add the common name hack we had to introduce to deal with the Taiwan issue, I'm not keen to go this way and play with names coming from the standard. There are more oddities in the list. I discovered that the official name for the language with the code 'nld' is Dutch; Flemish, even though Flemish doesn't exist as a separate language. Calling Dutch Flemish makes just as much sense as naming 'en-GB' English; Kentish. Although adhering to an internationally accepted specification saves us work and prevents stepping on sensitive toes, we should consider whether the names used for languages are not confusing or even incorrect. -- Greek, Modern (1453-) name contains distracting detail https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/681872 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 682089] [NEW] Jack plug in front doesn't mute back of Realtek ALC883 (HDA NVidia)
Public bug reported: My desktop PC's motherboard is the Asus M3N78-EH. This motherboard has a jack plug socket at its back panel, which I use to connect my speakers to. It also has a connector, which is connected to the audio panel at the front of the computer case. The front panel has a microphone and a headset jack plug socket. I've always got my speakers plugged in the back. When I plug in my headset in the front, the microphone works just fine. I also hear good sound via my headset. However, the audio is also sent to the back output, to the speakers. I believe, though, that the speakers should be muted when the headset is plugged in. The audio chip is a Realtek ALC883, and I see lot of mentions of HDA NVidia as well, though I'm not sure what that means. [Bug 681872] Re: Greek, Modern (1453-) name contains distracting detail
Thank you for helping with making Ubuntu better by reporting this bug. I'm accepting this issue as a valid papercut, because it affects the way a part of the interface makes users feel, and am forwarding this bug to the Debian BTS. This issue indeed needs to be fixed in Debian, as Ubuntu simply syncs this package. Although I encourage everyone to work on this bug, I would like to ask to send a possible patch to the bug report in Debian BTS, as fixing this issue should be done there. ** Changed in: hundredpapercuts Milestone: None = nt7-potpourri ** Changed in: hundredpapercuts Importance: Undecided = Low ** Changed in: hundredpapercuts Status: New = Triaged -- Greek, Modern (1453-) name contains distracting detail https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/681872 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 681940] [NEW] Facebook authentication failure is very unclear
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gwibber When Facebook authentication in Gwibber fails, a notification is shown using Notify OSD. However, the icon used for this notification is Facebook's logo, and the title of this notification is simply 'facebook'. Its body only mentions a Facebook authentication failure. Nothing in this notification message indicates that this error happened in Gwibber. It could just as well have taken place in Empathy, or maybe even in the web browser! The notification should be changed to convey that it is sent by Gwibber. Also, currently when you are notified via Notify OSD of a Facebook authentication failure, the Facebook entry in the accounts dialogue still says that you were successfully authenticated to Facebook. However, this is not the case and causes even more confusion, because the user will by now most certainly not know that the authentication failure was actually in Gwibber. [Bug 681938] [NEW] It is possible to click on AppMenu menus when in workspace switcher, but they don't show
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: unity When you are in the workspace switcher mode of Unity (on Natty) it is possible to click on the menus shown in the top panel by AppMenu. When you click on such a menu, on the panel the texture is changed to make it look like the menu is open. However, any possibly open menu that should be located underneath the menu's name is not shown; it seems to be hidden underneath the black of the workspace switcher. One possible solution could be to make Unity's launcher and panel non- interactive when the user is in the work-space switcher. However, personally I would prefer to keep the interface sensitive—as to prevent user confusion because of a seemingly frozen interface that is still there—but instead make everything work, despite the workspace switcher being displayed instead of the desktop, or open windows. [Bug 680581] [NEW] OpenOffice.org Write mislocates one point in graphs when exporting to PDF
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: openoffice.org When you export an ODT document containing graphs to PDF in OpenOffice.org Write, the PDF will have distorted graphs. This is caused by the dislocation of one point in every graph. The point in the graph that has the second-highest value for x will be set to x=0 and placed at the y-axis. [Bug 629024] Re: Clarify which kernel is updated in Grub
Thank you for taking the time to report this issue. However, it would not be helpful to tell users what kernel was updated last during boot. Adding more technical text to something that is already too technical is only going to make things more confusing. The average users does not know what a kernel is. Whenever possible, Grub should be hidden to the users and not show itself. Another reason why this wouldn't be a valid paper cut is that it is not trivial to fix. Therefore I'm marking this bug as Invalid in the One Hundred Paper Cuts project. I'm also closing the Grub task as Invalid, because of the same two reasons. It is more a feature request than a proper bug or paper cut, and therefore should be discussed elsewhere, most preferably upstream. ** Changed in: hundredpapercuts Status: New = Invalid ** Changed in: grub2 (Ubuntu) Status: New = Invalid -- Clarify which kernel is updated in Grub https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/629024 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
