[Bug 1268257] Re: nvidia-331-updates 331.38-0ubuntu3: nvidia-331-updates kernel module failed to build, with only error: objdump: '... .tmp_nv.o': No such file

2015-04-09 Thread TWFJR
I just did security update Linux Image 3.16.0.34-generic. It seems as if
every time that I do the next security update there is a problem as is
evident by this bug report: nvidia-331-updates kernel module failed to
build. I use this fix

(This seems to fix it (at least for one version upgrade) for many people

$ sudo dpkg-reconfigure nvidia-331

after that...

$ sudo dpkg-reconfigure nvidia-331-uvm

(some users may be on the versions of these packages suffixed with
-updates )

and the update completes and I restart.

I'm not an advanced Ubuntu tech but something must be wrong with the
nvidia driver or the kernel that does not allow for security updates to
complete.

What is causing this problem?

I'm about to have an old friend put Ubuntu15.04 on his computer and I
hope that this bug is fixed before that update. By convincing him that
WIN is more problem for him, I suggested Ubuntu.

[Bug 258357] Re: [G86GL] Latest NVIDIA drivers: X hangs with blank screen after logout.

2009-03-11 Thread TWFJR
Hi Bryce, I just put 8.10 on my wife's computer that has a 6100 Nvidia
chip on board. After much research and money spent with tech I opted to
use v96. It too has bugs and no support for 3D. Makes me wonder 9.04
will be like. I don't dare try to change my graphics driver. Crossing
my fingers. The tech did something right. His advise, don't try 9.04
and don't alter what he did. I'm running 177. 180 did not work on
wife's computer. One always looks forward to the next Ubuntu upgrade
but I have mixed feelings this time around. Maybe 10.4 will be good.

[Bug 258357] Re: [G86GL] Latest NVIDIA drivers: X hangs with blank screen after logout.

2009-03-11 Thread TWFJR
Jamin, I did my complaining with Nvidia. Seems as if they put the blame
on Ubuntu. Ubuntu throws it right back at Nvidia. I figure that Ubuntu
will lose users and Nvidia will lose customers. Either way, this has
gone on for a year and 9.04 is almost here. Either way the consumer
doesn't buy something that is broken.

[Bug 204137] Re: openoffice.org always crashes as soon as i access a menu.

2009-02-20 Thread TWFJR
I resolved this issue by following J.A. Watson's how to replace
OpenOffice 2.4 with 3.0, see:
http://community.zdnet.co.uk/blog/0,100567,10009699o-
2000498448b,00.htm#comment20098505. I suppose that the warning that
loading apps that are not in sync with Ubuntu applies here. I have not
had any issues with OO 3.0.

2008-12-27 Thread TWFJR
I have tried every suggestion to fix the nvidia driver and nothing is
working. From editing to trying other drivers, to using Envyng. Nvidia
does not recommend using any driver that Ubuntu has not recommended.
I'm not seeing a fix and after more than 24 hours on this problem I am
ready to download Ubuntu 8.04. Hope the next Ubuntu upgrade has resolved
the graphics driver issue.

[Bug 139493] A unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package information.

2007-09-13 Thread TWFJR
Public bug reported:

Linux ubuntufiechtl 2.6.20-16-generic #2 SMP Thu Aug 30 23:16:15 UTC
2007 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Added the debian source list to Synaptic source list third party and
got this message.

An error occurred
The following details are provided.

E:Dynamic Mmap ran out of room
E:Error occurred while processing slurm-llnl (NewVersion1)
E:Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/
ftp.de.debian.org_debian_dists_sid_main_binary-amd64_Packages
E:The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.
E:_cache-open()failed, please report.

I will attempt to remove it to resolve the problem.

Cannot remove source list from synaptic repoitory.

Used this command:
sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
commented out the last line, the line added
 deb http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian sid main,
which was where the error messages began.

Also, was noticing problems downloading prior to these error messages.
Could not download but could open source files, double clicking,
extracting. I have been attempting to install GyachE and I might add
without success.

Did:

sudo apt-get update; failed.

sudo apt-get install -f; failed.

Attempted to open update icon in top panel. No success until I commented out
last line of /etc/apt/sources.list. Even though the update indicates updates
available none were listed.
Trying above commands again.
