[Bug 1727628] Re: hp-plugin-3.17.9 is not avaiable because of new website

2017-10-29 Thread Till Kamppeter
A far as it looks for me the problem is not HP's site change. With every
HPLIP release I (as the maintainer of the OpenPrinting web site) get the
plugin e-mailed from a person of the HPLIP team and upload it to the
appropriate place on the OpenPrinting web server. I checked and I
actually got plugins for 3.17.6 and 3.17.10 (which I both have uploaded)
but not for 3.17.7 and 3.17.9.

So the problem is that HP did not supply the plugin for 3.17.7 and
3.17.9.

[Bug 1723593] Re: HP2540 Printer installs Ok but does not print

2017-10-17 Thread Till Kamppeter
The problem is the following: HPLIP's "hp" CUPS backend reports:

D [17/Oct/2017:06:44:33 +0100] [Job 1691] prnt/backend/hp.c 616: ERROR:
1009 media-empty-error; will retry in 30 seconds...

This means one of the following:

- Your printer is out of paper
- Your printer has a hardware problem
- The "hp" CUPS backend has a bug

I have the same printer and it works for me with HPLIP, and assuming you
are not reporting a bug with your printer being out of paper it is most
probably some hardware problem.

I will move the bug to HPLIP as it is definitely not a problem of CUPS,
cups-filters, or Ghostscript.

You can do another test to get at least the printing part of your
printer to work. Follow the instructions for setting up driverless
printing with your printer on

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ZestyZapus/ReleaseNotes#Driverless_Printing

Does this work for you?

[Bug 1723593] Re: HP2540 Printer installs Ok but does not print

2017-10-16 Thread Till Kamppeter
Please post the PPD file of the print queue for your DeskJet (it is in
/etc/cups/ppd/) and also please clear all previous errors by running

cancel -a

and then print another job. Observe the output of

lpstat -o

and

lpstat -p

If the job entry in the output of "lpstat -o" does not go away after a
few seconds you have most probably some error, "lpstat -p" will show you
the error.

At this point take your error_log and attach it to this bug.

[Bug 1723462] [NEW] GNOME: Universal Access - Larger mouse cursor only works with GDM not with LightDM and with GDM inconsistennt

2017-10-13 Thread Till Kamppeter
Public bug reported:

I have a vision problem and due to this I do not see very well the mouse
pointer in its original size on my 14" HiDPI 2560x1440 QHD screen of my
laptop. Therefore I go to "Universal Access" in the GNOME Settings and
choose "Medium" for "Cursor Size".

Due to bug 1722988 I happened to temporarily use GDM instead of LightDM
and so I observed that my cursor size change is only applied if I am
running my system with GDM as the greeter. With LightDM the cursor stays
in original size all the time. So I have currently switched to GDM again
to be able to have the larger mouse cursor.

The commmands I have used (as of comment #9 of bug 1722988):

--
sudo systemctl disable lightdm
sudo systemctl stop lightdm
sudo systemctl enable gdm #Seems to fail
sudo systemctl start gdm
sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm3 #Shows lightdm selected
select gdm3, push enter

Reboot
--

But the large mouse cursor with GDM is also not perfect, as in some
situations it stays in the small size.

[Bug 1722988] Re: Crash, black screen with lightdm

2017-10-12 Thread Till Kamppeter
Jeremy, why do we still have unity-settings-daemon after discontinuing
Unity? Why not also discontinue LightDM or make it use gnome-settings-
daemon?

[Bug 1722988] Re: Crash, black screen with lightdm

2017-10-12 Thread Till Kamppeter
I encountered the same problem today and after some trying around I came
to the idea of changing the greeter, entered the first four commands of
comment #9 (without having seen this bug report yet) and this way got
back in again. Then I googled for the problem and found this bug report.

I am using a 2nd generation Lenovo X1 Carbon and during Artful
development Wayland did not work for me and so I always worked in the
"GNOME with Xorg" session. The greeter was LightDM (looked the same as
the one of Zesty).

[Bug 1721839] Re: Services asked for by UDEV do not get triggered

2017-10-11 Thread Till Kamppeter
Here is the systemd journal of plugging the printer, taken with

journalctl -o verbose -f 2>&1 | tee systemd-journal-plug.log

After issuing the command (with printer unplugged) I waited some seconds
to see that there is no further output happening. Then I plugged the
printer and waited for no further output happening again and stopped the
command with Ctrl+C. Output is attached.

Now I have proceeded as described in the previous comment for unplugging
the printer, issuing this command with the printer still plugged:

journalctl -o verbose -f 2>&1 | tee systemd-journal-unplug.log

waited some seconds, unplugged the printer, waited some seconds, Ctrl+C.
Output attached.

[Bug 1721839] Re: Services asked for by UDEV do not get triggered

2017-10-11 Thread Till Kamppeter
I have tried recording startup and shutdown now by recording with the
command "sleep 10" and doing the manual operation (plugging/unplugging
USB) during the sleep delay. Unfortunately, it does not work.

For unplugging I did

sudo umockdev-record --ioctl=/dev/bus/usb/002/009=deskjet-2540-ioctl-
shutdown.log sleep 10

and unplugged the USB plug right after pressing Enter. After waiting for
the command to exit I did not get a deskjet-2540-ioctl-shutdown.log
file.

For plugging I did

sudo umockdev-record --ioctl=/dev/bus/usb/002/010=deskjet-2540-ioctl-
startup.log sleep 10

with the intention to plug the printer right after issuing the command.

Note that after repugging the printer will appear under Bus:Device
002:010 so I used /dev/bus/usb/002/010. As the printer is still
unplugged when issuing the command there is not yet a
/dev/bus/usb/002/010 file and the program exists immediately complaining
because of that and does not run "sleep 10".

So any help to record start-up and shutdown of a USB device is
appreciated.

[Bug 1721839] Re: Services asked for by UDEV do not get triggered

2017-10-11 Thread Till Kamppeter
I have looked through Pitti's (upstream author) instructions of the
tool, ut it seems that it only works on the already running device and
that there is no way to capture the startup and shutdown sequences.

I have recorded the main record of the device this way:

till@till-x1carbon:~$ lsusb
[...]
Bus 002 Device 009: ID 03f0:c211 Hewlett-Packard
[...]
till@till-x1carbon:~$ sudo umockdev-record /dev/bus/usb/002/009 >
deskjet-2540.umockdev

I have attached the file.

One can record device operations, but only those which can get triggered
by a shell command, not those who are triggered by a manual operation on
the device (plug/unplug, power-cycle, press button, ...).

Is there a shell command which triggers a shutdown, start-up, or reboot
of the printer? Especially one has to take into account that the device
keeps only its bus ID and the device ID increments by 1.

@pitti, is there a way to record start-up or shutdown of a USB device?

[Bug 1721839] Re: Services asked for by UDEV do not get triggered

2017-10-10 Thread Till Kamppeter
It seems that with a 70-printers.rules as follows at least a correct
service name is generated

--
# Low-level USB device add trigger
ACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="usb", ENV{DEVTYPE}=="usb_device",
ENV{ID_USB_INTERFACES}=="*:0701??:*", TAG+="udev-configure-printer",
TAG+="systemd", PROGRAM="/bin/systemd-escape
--template=udev-configure-printer@.service %p", ENV{SYSTEMD_WANTS}+="'%c'"
# Low-level USB device remove trigger
ACTION=="remove", SUBSYSTEM=="usb", ENV{DEVTYPE}=="usb_device",
ENV{ID_USB_INTERFACES}=="*:0701*:*", RUN+="udev-configure-printer remove %p"
--

Note that in the first rule the systemd-escape command has NO "-p"
option and that the %c for ENV{SYSTEMD_WANTS} has extra single quotes.
Compared to the original file only these single quotes got added.

After restarting UDEV with

sudo udevadm control --reload

and re-plugging the printer in most cases the service does not get
started.

systemctl status 'udev-configure-printer@-devices-
pci:00-:00:14.0-usb2-2\x2d2.service' > status.txt

gives something like

--
● udev-configure-printer@devices-pci:00-:00:14.0-usb2-2\x2d2.service -
Automatic USB/Bluetooth printer setup
(devices-pci:00-:00:14.0-usb2-2\x2d2)
   Loaded: loaded (/lib/systemd/system/udev-configure-printer@.service; static;
vendor preset: enabled)
   Active: inactive (dead)
--

In such a case one can start the service manually with

sudo systemctl start 'udev-configure-printer@-devices-
pci:00-:00:14.0-usb2-2\x2d2.service'

and this starts correctly udev-configure printer which sets up the
printer (and starts ippusbxd if needed).

In some very few cases the service actually gets correctly started (and
the printer set up) when one plugs the printer, but this happens rarely
(can there be some kind of race condition?).

So this only rarely happening automatic start of the printer setup
service is now the problem. The escaping seems to be fixed by the extra
single quotes.

[Bug 1721839] Re: Services asked for by UDEV do not get triggered

2017-10-09 Thread Till Kamppeter
Some discussion with xnox on IRC helped me to get to a possible cause of
the problem:

journalctl -u udev-configure-printer@-devices-
pci:00-:00:14.0-usb2-2x2d2.service > journalctl-u.txt

gives (file redirection prevents trimming ;lines to terminal width):

The directory which needs to get accessed by udev-configure-printer is:
/sys/devices/pci:00/:00:14.0/usb2/2-2, note that the second last
character is a dash. UDEV/systemd(?) inserts for the %i in the second
line of the /lib/systemd/system/udev-configure-printer@.service file:
-devices-pci:00-:00:14.0-usb2-2x2d2, replacing each slash by a
dash and the original dash by "x2d" (should it not be "\x2d"? Not sure
what gets inserted for the %I in the ExecStart line, but udev-configure-
printer ends up with a /sys/devices/pci:00/:00:14.0/usb2/2x2d2
which it does not find as the "x2d" is not turned back into a dash.

This worked in 17.04 so it is a regression.

Here one can see that the UDEV rules files are correct, leading to the
correct systemd services being requested

SYSTEMD_WANTS=ippusbxd@002:033.service udev-configure-printer@-devices-
pci:00-:00:14.0-usb2-2\x2d2.service printer.target

but neither the service ippusbxd@002:033.service nor the service udev-
configure-printer@-devices-pci:00-:00:14.0-usb2-2\x2d2.service
get started (note that I have put the .service file for ippusbxd in
place by "sudo cp /usr/share/doc/ippusbxd/examples/ippusbxd@.service
/lib/systemd/system/").

I can start each of these services manually though:

sudo systemctl start 'udev-configure-printer@-devices-
pci:00-:00:14.0-usb2-2\x2d2.service'

sudo systemctl start ippusbxd@002:033.service

In each case ippusbxd gets started for this printer and a print queue
auto-created.

What I expect is that the services get automatically started (and that
worked in 17.04) so that after plugging in an USB printer I can
immediately print as the print queue gets created automatically.

The "udev-configure-printer..." service works for all USB printers, not
only IPP-over-USB (it automatically recognizes the printer typ and does
an appropriate setup).

This is a regression as we had always automatic setup of USB printers.

Thanks, so the adding of said line to usr.sbin.cupsd helps?

Can you test Artful (on a virtual machine or as a live system) to see
whether it has the same problem and whether it can be fixed the same
way?

Note that the problems of HPLIP you mention do not have anything to do
with the CUPS package or the AppArmor profile of CUPS. Please report a
bug on hplip for them.

Everyone with this problem, can you please add a line

@{PROC}/*/cmdline r,

after the line

@{PROC}/*/auxv r,

in your /etc/apparmor.d/usr.sbin.cupsd file, then run

sudo aa-enforce /usr/sbin/cupsd

and reboot.

Does this solve your problem?

[Bug 1718717] Re: cupsd crashed with SIGSEGV in avahi_entry_group_free()

2017-09-27 Thread Till Kamppeter
Principally this kind of problem got already fixed and should not occur
again with the cups-daemon 2.2.4-7 package or newer. It is possible that
perhaps your /usr/sbin/cupsd file got somehow overwritten by an older
version.

So please try at first the following:

sudo apt install --reinstall cups-daemon

Then reboot the system and observe whether this makes the problem going
away.

Please report back here.

The GNOME integrated Printer Settings is nice but it still misses a few

[Bug 1564249] Re: Cannot print a PDF with AcroForms using fit-to-page

2017-09-10 Thread Till Kamppeter
For the time being (cups-filters 1.17.4) I have now applied a solution
where pdftopdf detects PDF forms using QPDF (thanks to Tobias Hoffmann,
smilingthax) and if there is a form uses and external utility for the
flattening, preferrably pdftocairo, if not present, Ghostscript. After
the flattening the original treatment by QPDF is performed.

If none of the utilities is available, no form-flattening is performed
(but as cups-filters-core-drivers depends on poppler-utils, pdftocairo
is always there).

The originally planned QPDF-based solution is still in the works and
will most probably added in a later release of cups-filters. Therefore
the QPDF task stays open.

the following commands with replaced by the actual IP address:

lpadmin -p LJM476IPP -E -v ipp://:631/ipp/print -m everywhere
ls -als /etc/cups/ppd/LJM476IPP.ppd
ipptool -tv ipp://:631/ipp/print get-printer-attributes.test >
printer-ipp-attrs.txt

Please post the screen output of the commands here.

[Bug 1712019] Re: Driverless printing only prints a blank sheet 17.10

2017-08-25 Thread Till Kamppeter
Great, thank you for the feedback.

So my recommendation for getting a working printer is choose one which
does driverless printing (the ones on which you can print from a phone:
AirPrint, IPP Everywhere, Mopria, Wi-Fi Direct). Or an HP, as HPLIP
continues to be developed.

I hope in the Google Summer of Code 2018 driverless scanning can be
done.

[Bug 1712019] Re: Driverless printing only prints a blank sheet 17.10

2017-08-25 Thread Till Kamppeter
I have now fixed the problem myself in the PPD generator in cups-filters
(and added the changes as a pathc for CUPS to the CUPS upstream report).
Also Mike Sweet seems to be back from vacation and has already read my
numerous bug reports.

So as soon as cups-filters 1.17.1-0ubuntu1 gets onto your system
(package available on Artful) you can create a working print queue. Also
a fully automatically created print queue should work.

[Bug 1712019] Re: Driverless printing only prints a blank sheet 17.10

2017-08-23 Thread Till Kamppeter
Thank you for the tests.

This means that the odd resolution (4800x1200 dpi) which got put into
the "Normal" setting of the "cupsPrintQuality" option breaks it (as I
assumed yesterday).

You should be able to work around this if the print dialog of the
application offers a "Print Quality" option where you can set "Draft" or
"High".

I have already posted a upstream bug report on CUPS:

https://github.com/apple/cups/issues/5091
The driverless PPD generator chooses resolutions for cupsPrintQuality settings
badly

Unfortunately, Mike Sweet, the author of CUPS, is currently on vacation,
so it can take some time until he will read this bug report.

Note that the PPD generator in cups-filters is a near 100% copy of the
one of CUPS. I will look into fixing it there and then proposing a patch
to CUPS.

[Bug 1712019] Re: Driverless printing only prints a blank sheet 17.10

2017-08-22 Thread Till Kamppeter
First, the kernel has no influence to printing results. All the printing
logic is happening in user space.

Please do the following tests and tell in which cases you get useful
printouts (and if so, also tell whether there are quality differences,
the PPD files are ones which you had attached in comment #2, file.pdf is
an arbitrary PDF file):

lpadmin -p oldppd -E -v ipp://EPSON25B56D.local:631/ipp/print -P
EPSON-WF-3620-Series17-04.ppd
lpadmin -p newppd -E -v ipp://EPSON25B56D.local:631/ipp/print -P
EPSON_WF_3620_series17-10.ppd

lp -d oldppd -o cupsPrintQuality=Draft file.pdf
lp -d oldppd -o cupsPrintQuality=Normal file.pdf
lp -d oldppd -o cupsPrintQuality=High file.pdf

lp -d newppd -o cupsPrintQuality=Draft file.pdf
lp -d newppd -o cupsPrintQuality=Normal file.pdf
lp -d newppd -o cupsPrintQuality=High file.pdf

For these tests please also follow the instructions of the section "CUPS
error_log" on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingPrintingProblems

[Bug 1712019] Re: Driverless printing only prints a blank sheet 17.10

2017-08-22 Thread Till Kamppeter
The problem you see in the PPDs. Resolutions are different.

So can you try to set the Print Quality to Draft to see whether it
prints?

Another test is creating a new queue with the OLD PPD file. Can you
print with this queue, Print Quality set to Norml or High?

Please run ipptool with the full printer URI, like this:

ipptool -tv ipp://EPSON25B56D.local:631/ipp/print get-printer-
attributes.test > out.txt

Attach the resulting output (here the file out.txt).

make sure that attachments get the MIME type text/plain, as then one can
easily read them in a web browser.
