[Bug 1796895] Re: Kernel 4.15.0-36 network performance regression

2018-10-09 Thread Van Stokes, Jr.
We had a similar issue with our MySQL server farm (seven dedicated MySQL
servers). Replication was very slow, falling behind for no apparent
reason. We were reaching 24 hours of lag! We never had that kind of lag
before. A couple of minutes at the most.

Long story short, we rebooted to 4.15.0.34 and the servers caught up
replication with in minutes!

[Bug 1689543] [NEW] 16.04.02 + HWE breaks Networking Jumbo Frames for BCM5709

2017-05-09 Thread Van Stokes, Jr.
Public bug reported:

Suggested problem type: regression
Sub-system: networking
See also:
https://askubuntu.com/questions/913018/ubuntu-16-04-02-hwe-breaks-networking-jumbo-frames-for-bcm5709

I upgraded the server from 14.04 to 16.04. The networking was working
fine and supported Jumbo Frames. But after the upgrade I am getting:

SIOCSIFMTU: Invalid argument

when trying to set the frame size.

I have three Dell servers with this problem. I know it has to do with
with 16.04 and/or +HWE because I have still have the same model Dell
servers running 14.04 and they have Jumbo Frames enabled.

[Bug 1316873] Re: Left mouse button stops working

2015-10-07 Thread Van Stokes, Jr.
Followup. I found my problem and corrected it. It was my USB keyboard.
My keyboard is a "Microsoft Natural Ergonomics Keyboard 4000 v1.0".
Picture: http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/61eczN%2BZTQL._SX466_.jpg
The "back" button (located center/bottom) was stuck down. I have had the
keyboard for sometime and apparently enough 'gunk' accumulated in and around
the button that it was kept from returning to the up (off) position. Once I
cleaned the button (removed it and blew out the area and cleaned the edges of
the button) the problem went away.

[Bug 1316873] Re: Left mouse button stops working

2015-10-06 Thread Van Stokes, Jr.
Just started happening to me. I have a whitebox system with an ASUS
motherboard and a USB chorded mouse. Using 14.04 LTS with Gnome 3
desktop. A classic example is I start FILES but I cannot close the
window (by clicking the X button) nor can I go back a directory. It's
treating the 'buttons' as if they are part of the title bar. I can grab
a button and move the window around.

[Bug 1193462] [NEW] gnome-shell (3.8) notification bar disappears

[Bug 938669] Re: upstart jobs do not respect /etc/security/limits.conf

2013-04-30 Thread Van Stokes, Jr.
The fix around this issue is a poor solution. We were just hit hard with this
very issue running MySQL server on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. We increased the size of
the server and the open files limit and Ubuntu would not honor it. It took many
many man hours to stuble onto a post describing the problem and the solution.
Details can be found here:

[Bug 1084178] [NEW] auto.net does not handle mutliple mount points from a remote

2012-11-28 Thread Van Stokes, Jr.
Public bug reported:

When using auto.net and mounting multiple remote exports, only one mount works
and autofs steps onto the other mounts.
The problem appears in /proc/mounts (see details in walk-thru below)

[Bug 974374] Re: Error on unmounting a NFSv4 share

2012-11-28 Thread Van Stokes, Jr.
We just had a similar incident.
The local server autofs mounts a remote NFS. The remote server unexpectidly
powered off (no normal shutdown). The remote server was powered back on however
the local server was not able to access the remote NFS's. It appears the local
server never umounted the remote NFS's. When you did and ls -l a bunch of
question marks would appear. We attempted umount the remote mounts but the
local server kept saying: {mount} was not found in /proc/mounts.

we could never get the local server to umount the remote server. We had
to reboot the local server.

[Bug 994575] Re: /etc/ppp/ip-up.d/000resolvconf should "exit 0" if pppd was run by NM, since NM will register the nameserver addresses itself

2012-07-30 Thread Van Stokes, Jr.
I installed the proposed changes and performed a VPN (PPTP) connection a
Windows 2008 Server. I initiated the connection via the Unity Network
GUI (Right-click network icon, VPN -> MyVPN Connection). The proposed
changes worked for me (Ubuntu 12.04 x64 desktop). The resolv.conf file
is no longer being populated with DNS servers obtained via the VPN
connection.
