It helps for me:
Create file:
1)  ~/.config$ touch debconf-kde-helperrc (if it doesn't exist)

Run :
 2) sudo chmod +w ~/.config/debconf-kde-helperrc

[Bug 1910127] [NEW] Could not calculate the upgrade from18.04 to 20.04

2021-01-04 Thread Victoria Nockles
Public bug reported:

Could not calculate the upgrade

An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade.

 This was likely caused by:
 * Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu
Please use the tool 'ppa-purge' from the ppa-purge
package to remove software from a Launchpad PPA and
try the upgrade again.

If none of this applies, then please report this bug using the command
'ubuntu-bug ubuntu-release-upgrader-core' in a terminal. If you want to
investigate this yourself the log files in '/var/log/dist-upgrade' will
contain details about the upgrade. Specifically, look at 'main.log' and
'apt.log'.

Output of main.log:

[Bug 1818807] [NEW] Overriding functions in the default namespace

2019-03-06 Thread Victoria Dlugopolskaya
Public bug reported:

If I specify a namespace with a prefix, a custom function works fine:

from lxml import etree
_function_ns = etree.FunctionNamespace('http://example.com')
_function_ns.prefix = 'a'
def _dummy_count(arg):
 return 10
_function_ns['count'] = _dummy_count
_xml = etree.Element('structure')
print _xml.xpath('a:count()')

Output is '10.0'.

But if I add the function to the default namespace, I've got an error:

from lxml import etree
_function_ns = etree.FunctionNamespace(None)
def _dummy_count(arg):
 return 10
_function_ns['count'] = _dummy_count
_xml = etree.Element('structure')
print _xml.xpath('count()')

Output:

Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "/Users/user/Desktop/function-namespace.py", line 7, in
print _xml.xpath('count()')
  File "src/lxml/etree.pyx", line 1575, in lxml.etree._Element.xpath
  File "src/lxml/xpath.pxi", line 307, in

  File "src/lxml/xpath.pxi", line 227, in
lxml.etree._XPathEvaluatorBase._handle_result
lxml.etree.XPathEvalError: Invalid number of arguments

Seems it doesn't recognise my 'count(arg)' function and use standard
'count(...)' instead.

It works fine with custom functions that are not conflicting with
standard functions, but how can I specify a custom function with one of
the standard functions name?

[Bug 1361451] [NEW] not sure just learning

2014-08-25 Thread Victoria
Public bug reported:

I'm learning about Unix/Linux and I'm sure by the time I've learned enough I
will be able to give you a better response to this problem I'm having. I'm also
sure I will be reinstalling the OS I am using when I've learned enough to
install it properly. I'm good right now, no major problems but I know some of
my stuff isn't right. Not bad enough that I can't run my laptop. Thanks for
taking the time to read this.

[Bug 1231178] [NEW] Altec Lansing speakers remote control not working

2013-09-25 Thread Victoria
Public bug reported:

This has been ongoing since 2010 ... I initially thought that it was a
hardware (Altec-Lansing speakers and/or Altec-Lansing remote control)
issue, but noting the timing of linux header updates (remote
intermittently working: range ~ 20 - minute - a couple of weeks working;
prolonged periods - up to 6+ months NOT working), I believe it is linux
(Ubuntu) problem.

From: Altec Lansing Customer Service supp...@alteclansing.com

Request received: Wireless remote not workling (VS 4221 speakers)
(ticket #1630)

Hi - Your request (#1630) has been received, and is being reviewed by
our support staff.

--

Hello: I have the VS 4221 speakers and two of the wireless remotes;
neither of the remotes works, even with new button batteries. I cannot
change the treble/bass, etc. Restarting my computer has no effect, nor
doe unplugging the speakers (electrical outlet), then plugging them back

Customer (Victoria S) - 04/24/2010 02:02 PM

April 24, 2010

Hi: I purchased these speakers (VS4221) in Nov. 2009. This week, the
remote suddenly stopped working; I thought it was the battery, but a
fresh (new) battery did nothing: the remote still fails to work, at all.
I cannot use the standby function,or more importantly adjust bass /
treble.

Please advise.  Thanks, Victoria

- Hello: Please regard this issue as Resolved:
-
- 1. I found a link on your website for ordering a replacement remote for
- free (shipping not included);
-
-
http://www.alteclansing.com/index.php?file=north_product_detailiproduct_id=remote_for_vs4221
-
- 2.  This morning (Apr. 26), after a few Ubuntu (v.9.10) updates ran /
- installed, this remote began working again (without a system restart).
- Go figure.
-
- Anyway, this issue now appears to be resolved, satisfactorily.
-
- Thanks, and have a great day! Victoria :-)

[Bug 220407] Re: Cannot change screen brightness on Fujitsu T2010 laptop in Intrepid

2010-03-16 Thread Victoria Wilson
Is anyone looking at this? I've tried the two hacks posted and neither
of them work for me on the HP Pavilion.

It's troubling if this hasn't been addressed after a year. Screen
brightness is a health and safety concern. It may seem like a small
issue, but being able to see the screen comfortably is pretty pivotal to
most tasks that involve a computer.

Please would someone have a look and see what's going wrong here?

Many thanks,

Victoria

[Bug 368427] Re: No sound in Ubuntu 9.04

2009-06-29 Thread Victoria Wilson
This now appears to have been mostly resolved following a recent
update... although headphone detection/playback is only working on one
speaker (the one that I managed to get sound through before).

Still, it's great to have the speakers and microphone back in action, as
well as one headphone socket, and to not have to use a python diagnostic
tool to manually enable sound every time I reboot the laptop :)

[Bug 368427] Re: No sound in Ubuntu 9.04

2009-06-07 Thread Victoria Wilson
Having put my faith in Ubuntu, and upgraded to the new version at the
end of April, I've now been left with pretty much no audio for the best
part of six weeks. It's meant I'm unable to use the internet telephony I
rely on to stay in touch with relatives and friends in my home country,
and has seriously impacted my ability to use my laptop for it's primary
purpose since I am a language professional.

The bug was reported to the Alsa team on May first, and support was
forthcoming until it was shown that the problem was not my
misconfiguration but a genuine problem with the drivers, as revealed by
their own tools (HDA-analyzer, which - coincidentally - I even had to
amend from the faulty script they provide on their website in order to
use). Since identifying some technical features of the problem that may
actually give us the information needed for a fix, nobody on the Alsa
team has responded.

There has been extremely little support from the Ubuntu team, as can be
seen from this bug report.

If this were a new install of Ubuntu, I would expect these kinds of
problems - but for a standard upgrade to wipe out functionality that was
previously working fine really should raise serious questions about how
code is managed on this project.

Perhaps someone can explain what is going on to restore this functionality...
or perhaps I should start looking again at other distributions.

[Bug 368427] Re: No sound in Ubuntu 9.04

2009-05-19 Thread Victoria Wilson
This bug would benefit from some input from someone in the Ubuntu sound
team, as it appears (from discussion on the Alsa mantis tracker) that
Alsa is installed in non-standard locations in Ubuntu. Therefore ubuntu-
specific knowledge is required to investigate further!

Please could someone with Ubuntu/Alsa specific knowledge take a look at
the Mantis thread? It appears Ubuntu uses non-standard configuration for
Alsa, so Ubuntu-specific knowledge will be required to resolve this
problem.

[Bug 192629] Re: Cannot move file to trash, do you want to delete immediately? on NTFS / VFAT partitions

2009-05-17 Thread Victoria
I just tried changing the mount of the ntfs partition to gid=1000. For
me, using 9.04, this did not change the behaviour of trash at all. That
is, I can only delete from the ntfs partition.

This behaviour is one of the reasons I don't promote ubuntu to others.

I'm running Ubuntu 8.10 64-bit on an HP Omnibook DV3507 which has also

[Bug 325547] Re: [8.10] no sound anymore

2009-02-13 Thread Victoria Wilson
Hi Jean-Christophe,

Do you think the libao.conf file was changed as part of the cdemu-daemon
update?

Sound on my laptop has worked fine with Ubuntu for several months now,
but today I rebooted and now it only crackles. My conf file also points
to alsa, but I'm loathe to change settings and mask a bug that really
needs to be sorted out somewhere else, if those settings previously
worked fine.

Bugs #328869, #326864 and #328030 also appear to relate to vanishing
sound in the last few days.

[Bug 328869] Re: New! no sound from external speakers. Sound from headset only.

2009-02-13 Thread Victoria Wilson
Have you tried using a conventional set of headphones plugging into the
headphone out socket that is connected to your sound card?

My sound has also just stopped working; rebooted this morning for the
first time in a few days, and now it just crackles when the system tries
to play something. Could've been a change in the last 3-5 days as I've
not rebooted too often this week. Am running an HP Pavilion DV3507
laptop that has not had any sound problems previously.

Bugs #325547, #326864 and #328030 appear to relate.

Kernel modules for sound are installed (find /lib/modules/`uname -r` |

I tried the reinstallation of drivers as described on the Sound Troubleshooting

[Bug 328869] Re: New! Sound vanished from speakers. Sound from USB headset only.

2009-02-13 Thread Victoria Wilson
Just found Bug #272321 where a problem with PCM output being muted
without user intervention and a crackling noise while muted has been
identified:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pulseaudio/+bug/272321

Un-muting PCM has solved this issue for me, but I don't memorize the
status of all my audio sliders (and they're not all at max usually) so
this is a really, really frustrating problem that appears to have been
going on for FIVE MONTHS.

Why isn't someone on the PulseAudio team sorting this out? This is
wasting hours of users time!

[Bug 272321] Re: noise (crackling) when muting PCM volume and audio is playing

2009-02-13 Thread Victoria Wilson
This bug is still appearing; today I spent several hours trying to debug
my sound drivers when a PulseAudio update had muted PCM (not all my
sliders are at max by default, and I don't memorize where they all are -
so not easy to find) and then produced just crackling instead of sound.
Then I run across this bug and it's been going on for five months!!

Is someone fixing this?

I pressed the brightness down button three times, then another three
times. Then I pressed the brightness up button three times, then

in, twice - but the brightness box didn't come up this time for some
reason. Sometimes it does (last night, for example).

[Bug 220407] Re: Cannot change screen brightness on Fujitsu T2010 laptop in Intrepid

2009-02-04 Thread Victoria Wilson
Ok, the fix probably doesn't apply to me. In terms of behaviour, it does
appear to be exactly the same bug, though - I press the buttons and the
little brightness symbol appears, and looks like it is being increased
or decreased, but the screen brightness stays exactly the same. I unplug
the power and the little brightness symbol also appears at 50%, but
again the actual screen brightness doesn't change. I'm running an HP
DV3507 ea which has an NVidia GeForce 9300GS graphics card.

[Bug 220407] Re: Cannot change screen brightness on Fujitsu T2010 laptop in Intrepid

2009-02-04 Thread Victoria Wilson
Here's the /var/log/kern.log file for my HP DV3507ea with NVidia
GeForce 9300GS card.

I pressed the brightness down button three times, then another three
times. Then I pressed the brightness up button three times, then
another three times. Then I unplugged the power, then plugged it back
in, twice - but the brightness box didn't come up this time for some
reason. Sometimes it does (last night, for example).

[Bug 220407] Re: Cannot change screen brightness on Fujitsu T2010 laptop in Intrepid

2009-02-03 Thread Victoria Wilson
Hi Duyn,

Thanks for the info you've posted. I just tried upgrading the kernel as
suggested but it didn't like the NVidia drivers (and in basic graphics
mode it wouldn't let me change the brightness, which doesn't auger
well).

I've tried using the xrandr command but this is what happens:

vwil...@hp-pavilion:~$ xrandr --output LVDS --set BACKLIGHT_CONTROL native
X Error of failed request: 183
  Major opcode of failed request: 156 (RANDR)
  Minor opcode of failed request: 15 ()
  Serial number of failed request: 14
  Current serial number in output stream: 14
vwil...@hp-pavilion:~$ xbacklight
No outputs have backlight property

Any tips on what I'm getting wrong here? Any pointers much appreciated.
It'd be great to get this sorted out, before people's eyes start
bleeding. I don't want to have to go back to Vista.

[Bug 301353] Re: HP Pavilion dv5: ATA exception on resume from suspend

2009-01-01 Thread Victoria Wilson
Hi folks,

I appear to be having exactly the same problem on a brand new HP
DV3507EA (arrived from HP yesterday :D ). It produces errors with both
hibernate and suspend. This is the first time I've ever used linux so
I'm sorry I really don't know how to use those two tools dmesg and
lspci, but I have made these notes of the errors that appear on
hibernate:

btusb_intr_complete: hci0 urb fff8800bcdea300 failed to resubmit(2)
ata2: exception Emask 0x10 SAct 0x0 SErr action 0x9 t4
ata2: irq_stat 0x00400040, connection status changed
ata1: exception Emask 0x10 SAct 0x0 SErr action 0x9 t4
ata1: irq_stat 0x00400040, connection status changed

ata1.00 exception Emask 0x0 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x0 action 0x6 frozen
ata1.00: cmd ea/00   . (lots of 0s I didn't write down)  tag0
res.. (more long 0s I didn't write down) Emask 0x4 timeout
ata1.00 revalidation failed (err no=-5)

This is very confusing atm - as I say I'm new to linux and I really want
to give it a go, but I do also really need hibernate and suspend to work
on my laptop! Appreciate all the good work going on here, it's a pretty
impressive communal effort.

[Bug 133982] Re: Kubuntu 7.10 doesn't print anything (HP Deskjet 710c)

2008-10-17 Thread Victoria
I too ran into problems trying to get CUPS to recognise and initialise
my HP Deskjet 710c on a Xubuntu Hardy Heron.

The tips here enabled me to print the test page successfully.

Note that Xubuntu users will not have gedit so use this:

sudo mousepad /etc/apparmor.d/usr.sbin.cupsd

I added the
/etc/* r,
immediately after the line:
/usr/lib/** rm,

I stopped the apparmor with:
sudo /etc/init.d/apparmor stop

and re-ran the CUPS link to detect my printer.

All is well!

Note that there is a typo in a post above - there is an r missed out
in apparmor which of course makes for a meaningless command.

My thanks to the contributors to this thread.
