[Bug 1656470] [NEW] lxde-common should depend on lxsession-logout

2017-01-13 Thread Vladimir Rutsky
Public bug reported:

lxde-common includes logout desktop icon (/usr/share/applications/lxde-
logout.desktop) which tries to run lxsession-logout from lxsession-
logout package, which is not installed because nor lxde-common, nor lxde
not depend on it.

[Bug 1621989] Re: chown of SUID executable in docker container on overlayfs fails with kernel BUG at linux-4.4.0/fs/attr.c:280

2016-09-09 Thread Vladimir Rutsky
Tim, thank you for the quick response!

I tried linux-image-4.4.0-38-generic package (version 4.4.0-38.57) from
xenial-proposed and can't reproduce this bug on it, looks like it is
fixed in proposed version.

Thanks for the help, this issue should be resolved when linux-
image-4.4.0-38-generic will reach xenial-updates channel.

[Bug 1621989] [NEW] chown in docker container on overlayfs fails with kernel BUG at linux-4.4.0/fs/attr.c:280

2016-09-09 Thread Vladimir Rutsky
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:

1. Take any fresh installation of Ubuntu 16.04. I used Vagrant to
reproduce this bug, but it also reproduces on my VM with Ubuntu 16.04 in
Azure.

2. Upgrade kernel to current latest release (linux-
image-4.4.0-36-generic).

# uname -r
4.4.0-36-generic

3. Install Docker 1.11.2 from Ubuntu repositories (also can be
reproduced with Docker 1.12.1 from official Docker repositories for
Debian/Ubuntu):

# apt install docker.io

4. Use overlayfs as storage driver in Docker. Edit /etc/default/docker
and add DOCKER_OPTS="--storage-driver=overlay":

# echo 'DOCKER_OPTS="--storage-driver=overlay"' >> /etc/default/docker
# systemctl restart docker
# docker info

[Bug 1546108] Re: Latest Vagrant box for Ubuntu Xenial is failing to boot

2016-07-27 Thread Vladimir Rutsky
Looks like with released fix VM boot speed has decreased drastically:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/cloud-images/+bug/1567265

On my system with VirtualBox 5.0.24 recent image (from https://cloud-
images.ubuntu.com/xenial/current/, dated 20160725) with enabled UART
boots till "Btrfs loaded" string in 105 seconds, and with disabled in
under 7 seconds.

While enabled UART change fixes booting, it significantly reduces
likelihood of image usage due to very slow boot speed.

[Bug 1511157] Re: Unity command returns python error

2016-01-18 Thread Vladimir Rutsky
I believe unity package must depend (directly or indirectly) on python-
gobject-2.

My colleague encountered this bug and it's symptoms were: after login only
desktop with the wallpaper is shown.
You can right click on desktop and, for example, create "New Directory", or
start terminal from the context menu,
but no window decorations are shown.

[Bug 1380041] Re: Erasing NTFS formatted flash raises AttributeError: 'NoneType' object has no attribute 'get_cached_property'

2015-01-08 Thread Vladimir Rutsky
I tested usb-creator-gtk 0.2.56.3 and can't reproduce this bug anymore, thanks!
But also I can see issue noted by Yu Ning: after first erasing usb-creator-gtk
says that there is not enough free space on flash drive. Erasing second time
helps.

[Bug 1405685] Re: GCC manpage contains invalid @tie{} tags

2014-12-27 Thread Vladimir Rutsky
 Could you double-check this? They show up when I run `info gcc` here.

I double-checked that I have installed gcc-4.8-doc package and in

$ info g++-4.8 Invoking GCC Submodel Options AVR Options

I can find same paragraph without @tie{} tags:

 'avrxmega7'
  XMEGA devices with more than 128 KiB of program memory and
  more than 64 KiB of RAM.
  MCU = 'atxmega128a1', 'atxmega128a1u', 'atxmega128a4u'.

A bit strage is that infopage has singlequotes ('avrxmega7') and man-
page has double-quotes (avrxmega7).

Info-page source doesn't have any tags on my system:

$ zcat /usr/share/info/gcc-4.8.info.gz | grep avrxmega7 -A 3
 'avrxmega7'
  XMEGA devices with more than 128 KiB of program memory and
  more than 64 KiB of RAM.
  MCU = 'atxmega128a1', 'atxmega128a1u', 'atxmega128a4u'.
--
 'avrxmega6', 'avrxmega7', respectively. If MCU specifies a device,
 this built-in macro is set accordingly. For example, with
 '-mmcu=atmega8' the macro will be defined to '4'.

$ dpkg -S /usr/share/info/gcc-4.8.info.gz
gcc-4.8-doc: /usr/share/info/gcc-4.8.info.gz

$ apt-cache policy gcc-4.8-doc

[Bug 1405685] [NEW] GCC manpage contains invalid @tie{} tags

2014-12-25 Thread Vladimir Rutsky
Public bug reported:

I found in `man gcc` following contents:

   avrxmega7
   XMEGA devices with more than 128@tie{}KiB of program memory
and more than 64@tie{}KiB of RAM. mcu@tie{}= atxmega128a1,
   atxmega128a1u, atxmega128a4u.

you can see there strange @tie{} tags between numbers and measure
units, where non-breakable space should be.

`info gcc` doesn't have such tags, so looks like this is a bug of
converting original GCC documentation to manpage format.

This bug is similar to #1307622 (which is duplicate of #1300361), but in
my situation USB flash had partition table.

[Bug 1380041] [NEW] Erasing NTFS formatted flash raises AttributeError: 'NoneType' object has no attribute 'get_cached_property'

2014-10-11 Thread Vladimir Rutsky
Public bug reported:

When I'm trying to erase USB flash I'm get popup with following stack
trace:

org.freedesktop.DBus.Python.AttributeError: Traceback (most recent call last):
  File /usr/lib/python3/dist-packages/dbus/service.py, line 707, in
_message_cb
retval = candidate_method(self, *args, **keywords)
  File /usr/share/usb-creator/usb-creator-helper, line 218, in Format
parent_dev = _get_parent_object(udisks, device)
  File /usr/share/usb-creator/usb-creator-helper, line 49, in
_get_parent_object
parent = partition.get_cached_property('Table').get_string()
AttributeError: 'NoneType' object has no attribute 'get_cached_property'

To workaround this problem I've done:
1. Remove existing partition on flash drive in GParted.
2. Create new FAT32 partition for whole flash drive in GParted.
3. Unplug/plug flash drive.
4. Start usb-creator-gtk --- Make Startup Disk now active and works.

[Bug 425979] Re: Holding shift fails to display grub2 menu

2014-10-11 Thread Vladimir Rutsky
On fresh install of Ubuntu 14.04.1: both shifts (holding or repeatedly pressed)
do nothing --- system continues to boot.
Pressing escape just after GRUB is started presents menu, but this requires
quite good timing (in contrast to just holding shift during computer boot).
If escape is pressed repeatedly, GRUB shell appears (as if you press escape
in GRUB menu).

[Bug 1317112] [NEW] Sometimes Gnucash doesn't redraw window

2014-05-07 Thread Vladimir Rutsky
Public bug reported:

From time to time I experience following bug with Gnucash:

1. I start Gnucash from terminal.
2. Gnucash starts and loads last opened file — I see all my accounts etc.

Then if i click on items or try to use keyboard inside Gnucash window nothing
happens: window contents is not redrawed.
If I click on menu item, or switch to other window, or resize window, or do
right-click window will redraw and I will see, that actually all clicks were
delivered to application: selection changes, entered text appears.

Usually application restart helps and all works fine.

I experienced similar to this bug in Ubuntu 13.10: sometimes application
redrawed but with some delay, so it looked very laggy.

[Bug 994660] Re: Offer purging of old kernels

2014-03-06 Thread Vladimir Rutsky
Few months ago I installed Ubuntu 13.10 and selected automatic
partition of hard drive. To my delight Ubuntu installer choosed *only
256 MB* for /boot partition.

Today during regular update /boot run out of space and update failed,
and this is only few months of working with Ubuntu with default
installation!

IMO this is serious defect.

[Bug 1267648] Re: Copying large amount of files to USB stick makes system laggy or even freeze/hang (temporary)

2014-01-12 Thread Vladimir Rutsky
I discovered two more requirements to reproduce this bug: free RAM
should be low and swap must be enabled.

To occupy most of 8 GB RAM that I have after reboot I allocate it from python
script:
python -c 'import sys; t = X * 1024 * 1024 * 1024 * 5; sys.stdin.read()'
after that only about 15-25% RAM is free.

With disabled swap all works smoothly even with large vm sysctl settings
(vm.dirty_ratio = 60, vm.dirty_background_ratio = 40) and low free
memory.

I tested with kernel version 3.13.0-031300rc7-generic installed from provided
link and bug is reproducible.
I'm not tested yet with older Ubuntu releases, but I believe I experienced this
bug more than year ago too.

[Bug 1267648] [NEW] Copying large amount of files to USB stick makes system laggy or even freeze/hang (temporary)

2014-01-09 Thread Vladimir Rutsky
Public bug reported:

How to reproduce:

1. Create large enough temporary file:

$ dd if=/dev/zero of=/tmp/zeroes bs=8196 count=100
100+0 records in
100+0 records out
819600 bytes (8.2 GB) copied, 31.5395 s, 260 MB/s

2. Mount USB stick/external USB hard drive.
3. Start copy to external device:
$ cp /tmp/zeroes /media/bob/16\ GB\ USB\ 3.0/

Expected behaviour: file being copying in background for a quite a lot of time
(since USB sticks not so fast) not interrupting other work on system.
Observed behaviour: after some time of copying system starts to lag --- mouse
cursor jerking, alt+tab lags, windows became dimmed, music lags.
If I try to copy around 20 GB of files (e.g. photoes collections) system became
almost completely unresponsive and I can observe in syslog following messages:

[Bug 1267648] Re: Copying large amount of files to USB stick makes system laggy or even freeze/hang (temporary)

2014-01-09 Thread Vladimir Rutsky
Here is recent question describing this issue:
http://askubuntu.com/questions/397249/system-freezes-unresponsive-
unusable-when-copying-large-file-to-usb

I tried to reduce cache size up to

vm.dirty_background_ratio = 2
vm.dirty_ratio = 5

--- system became much more usable when files being copied, but still
laggy (e.g. tabs switching in gnome-terminal hangs, text input freezes
on several seconds in Firefox).

[Bug 1267235] [NEW] System program problem detected dialog not shown in launcher

2014-01-08 Thread Vladimir Rutsky
Public bug reported:

If system program crashes displayed dialog for sending report
(/usr/lib/update-notifier/system-crash-notification process) doesn't
appears in launcher (no window icon) and in Alt+Tab menu, so if I switch
to other window that completely overlaps dialog it becomes problematic

# kill -SEGV 8047

2. System program problem detected dialog appears.

[Bug 1234453] Re: Terminal freezes during long-running applications

2014-01-07 Thread Vladimir Rutsky
I observed following behavior that may be related to this bug report in
fresh installation of Ubuntu 13.10.

gnome-terminal, pidgin, nautilus (and probably most of Gnome
applications) randomly freezes when I typing text in them: they became
unresponsive (not redrawing themselfs) and after few seconds the may or
may not became grayed out. After few seconds they unfreeze and works
as if they never freezed (all entered text appears in application).

This behaviour in gnome-terminal looks very close to described in this
bug report.

[Bug 1233662] Re: Missing debug helpers in QtCreator/can't view STL containers in debugger

2013-12-03 Thread Vladimir Rutsky
I'm using Qt Creator 3.0 RC1 to develop Qt 4.8-based application and
debugging application started by Qt Creator (F5) works fine.

By default I can't attach to already running process with Operation not
permitted, but this is known security feature, you can disable it e.g.
by running from root:

echo 0 | sudo tee /proc/sys/kernel/yama/ptrace_scope

See http://askubuntu.com/questions/41629/after-upgrade-gdb-wont-attach-
to-process for details.

Is your problem with ptrace_scope?

[Bug 1218322] Re: Can't set keyboard layout change to alt+shift, ctrl+shift, etc.

2013-11-25 Thread Vladimir Rutsky
I heard about problems described in this bug report in Ubuntu 13.10, but
when I updated from Ubuntu 13.04 to 13.10 I did't noticed any issues
with setting custom layout switching shortcut (alt+shift or ctrl+shift)
in System Settings - Text Enty, so I can confirm that it already fixed
in gnome-control-settings.

[Bug 1218322] Re: Can't set keyboard layout change to alt+shift, ctrl+shift, etc.

2013-11-25 Thread Vladimir Rutsky
William,

I installed all packages from PPA mentioned in description (ppa:attente
/modifier-only-input-switch). Setting alt+shift and ctrl+shift works
as before, and also I'm able to set right alt (Alt R) as layout
switching shortcut (with gsettings set org.compiz.integrated show-hud
['Alt_L'])

But now layout switching is somehow slow: after pressing Alt R or
ctrl+shift I'm able to enter 3-4 characters in old layout before
layout actually switches. This is major issue for fast text entering

[Bug 1253593] Re: hud memory usage grows over time

2013-11-23 Thread Vladimir Rutsky
I monitored memory usage for a day and noticed stable memory usage
increasing.

Attaching log of memory usage over time generated with

while true; do watch -g -n 1 ps -o rss -o size -o vsize $(pgrep hud-service);
echo `date -Iseconds` `ps --no-header -o rss -o
 size -o vsize $(pgrep hud-service)`  log.txt; sleep 1; done

File contains time, resident set size (KB), memory size (KB),
total VM size (KB) rows (first few rows doesn't contain last two
columns, I decided to include them later during monitoring, when
realized that hud-service memory usage drops when other processes
(e.g. g++) allocates a lot of memory).

In this log you can see, that after some time hud-service starts to
constantly eat memory about 20 MB per hour.

During logging from start till around 22:30 (GMT+4) I was using computer
interactively, after that computer was locked and no extensive work was
done on it.

[Bug 1253593] [NEW] hud memory usage grows over time

2013-11-21 Thread Vladimir Rutsky
Public bug reported:

After five days of uptime hud-service used 749 MB of RAM.

Restarting hud-service drops it memory usage to about 100-150 MB, on the
next day it's using already 227 MB of RAM.

I'm using Ubuntu 13.10 for developing Qt-based application. Most of the time
following applications started and used:
Qt Creator, Qt Linguist, Qt Designer;
gnome-terminal;
gitk, git gui, cmake-gui;
Firefox;
Pidgin.

In the tray there are:
System Load Indicator,
Nagstamon (v0.9.11 from official site),
shutter,
remmina.

Also I use Yandex.Music and Grooveshark web-apps.

2013-11-21 Thread Vladimir Rutsky
I use HUD only to launch small set of programs, like gnome-terminal, Qt
Creator etc. I don't use it for file/music or other search.

How much memory should be considered a lot for hud-service?
On Ubuntu 12.04 hud-service uses only 7 MB of RAM, and on 13.10 hud-service
just after start eats more than 100 MB of RAM.

Attaching current /proc/pid/status (hud service use 174 MB of RAM and
about 10 hours earlier was 120 MB).

[Bug 1007847] Re: qml pincharea doesn't work with opengl, works good otherwise

2013-11-10 Thread Vladimir Rutsky
My colleague and I debugged this issue and prepared patch for it.

If we undrestood correctly, bug was caused by code that searches widget
that should get touch input. It checks with childAt() which child
should get input, but doesn't pass event to root widget if no children
found (as done in other event handlers, for example in
translateWheelEvent()).

This bug can be reproduced if you try to get touch input in root widget
(native X11 window, e.g. call show() on Qt widget without parents).

Also, looks like when any widget calls QWidget.winId() directly or
indirectly (e.g. by setting that this widget is rendering with OpenGL)
widget being promoted to native, and too became root of input widgets
hierarchy.

Attached patch was tested on our application and Qt demos on Ubuntu
13.04 and Ubuntu 13.10.

The most noticable problem is with Pidgin --- it quite often hangs in

[Bug 876387] Re: fuser forking uncontrollably in cron job

2012-02-04 Thread Vladimir Rutsky
This bug affects my system in following way: I have cameramonitor
package installed which periodically calls `fuser /dev/video0`, also I
have nproc limits set to 600 in /etc/security/limits.conf, so
periodically all my threads resources are getting exhausted, which leads
to faults in some programs that tries to create thread at that moment.

The most noticable problem is with Pidgin --- it quite often hangs in
pthread_cond_wait() with stack trace similar to specified here:
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=666957 looks like because
gstreamer fails to fork.

Peter's patch helped, thanks!

[Bug 726365] Re: update-apt-xapian-index crashed with ImportError

2011-07-24 Thread Vladimir Rutsky
I have axi in Python path (on 11.04) and after this crash apt-xapian-
index script works normally. May be at first boot not all of the files
are updated and upgrading process is still continues?

Somebody marked that this bug affects him, so this problem is probably
reproducible.

I tested this issue on Ubuntu 10.10 with scons 2.0.0-1 --- it is still
reproducible (with exactly same main.tex and SConscript). Workaround
also works as before.

I can try newer scons from custom ppa if you can suggest any.

[Bug 770673] [NEW] mc crashes when trying to move file to nonexistent directory in FTP

2011-04-25 Thread Vladimir Rutsky
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mc

To reproduce follow these steps:
1.  Start mc:
$ mc
2. Open ftp directory in mc by entering in command line:
cd /#ftp:l...@1337ftp.co.cc:l33thackers...@1337ftp.co.cc
(any FTP server with write access should be acceptable, this is first address I
found in Internet:
http://www.l33thackers.com/Thread-Public-FTP-for-l33thackers so this is NOT
private information.)
3. Navigate to any file in FTP directory, press F6 to start moving, enter
target directory name that doesn't exists, like test14323/

Expected behavior:
mc should report that file can not be moved.

Observed behavior:
mc crashes with SIGSEGV:

ftpfs: CWD failed.
Program received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault.

[Bug 713630] [NEW] mc crashes on saving after editing at EOF in hex mode

2011-02-05 Thread Vladimir Rutsky
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mc

Steps to reproduce:
 1. Create new file with single byte in it:
  $ echo -n 'a'  test
 2. Open file:
  $ mcedit -v test
 3. Press F4 to switch in hex mode.
 4. Press F2 to start editing.
 5. Press b, c, d to substitute current character with new hexadecimal
value.
 6. Press F10 and select Yes to exit with saving.

Observed behavior - mc crashes outputting:
 mcedit: datasource.c:229: mcview_set_byte: Assertion `offset
 mcview_get_filesize (view)' failed.
 Aborted (core dumped)

Expected behaviour - normal exit.

[Bug 657585] Re: Shutter don't preserve screenshot saving directory

2010-10-17 Thread Vladimir Rutsky
 Could you please select the new folder manually instead of pasting? Does this
 work?
Yes, it works: if I select folder by walking with mouse through directories
until contents of /tmp/shutter/dir/ is shown and then pressing Open, then
screenshots are made into /tmp/shutter/dir/.

How can be tested is this a GTK's bug? Will you post bug report to GTK team?
Which information you need?
I'm using:
  Gnome - 2.30.2
  libgtk2-perl - 1:1.221-4ubuntu2
  libgtk2.0-0 - 2.20.1-0ubuntu2

[Bug 511942] Re: Default directory for saved screenshots is /home instead of /home/login

2010-10-10 Thread Vladimir Rutsky
I observe bug similar to described in this report with version 0.86.4 from
Shutter's ppa.
Original report of this bug marked as duplicate of this is:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/shutter/+bug/657585

Steps to reproduce:
1. Create directory for screenshots:
 $ mkdir -p /tmp/shutter/screenshots/dir
2. Start shutter with clean configuration:
 $ cd
 $ mv .shutter .shutter_
 $ shutter
3. Open Edit - Preferences. Main tab. By default Directory is home directory.
4. Click on directory value---list of common directories will be poped down,
select Other...---directory selection menu will appear.
5. Copy-paste in Location /tmp/shutter/screenshots/dir/ and press Open.
Shutter will show, that Directory for saving screenshots is dir.
6. In Shutter window press Full Screen for taking screenshot.

Observed behavior: screenshot is taken in user's home directory.
Expected behavior: screenshot is taken /tmp/shutter/screenshots/dir/.

Bug is not fixed, I suggest to reopen it.

[Bug 627655] [NEW] scons fails to build simple LaTeX document with Russian text

2010-08-31 Thread Vladimir Rutsky
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: scons

I'm trying to build this test document:
= main.tex =
\documentclass{article}

\usepackage{ucs}
\usepackage[utf8x]{inputenc}
\usepackage[T2A]{fontenc}
\usepackage[russian]{babel}

\begin{document}
Russian test: тест.
\end{document}
= end =

with this SCons script:
= SConstruct =
env = Environment()
env.PDF('main.tex')
= end =

Which fails with:
...
kpathsea: Running mktextfm larm1000
mkdir: cannot create directory `././.texmf-var': Permission denied
mktextfm: mktexdir /.texmf-var/fonts/tfm/lh/lh-t2a failed.
...
(complete output of running scons attached as scons_run_output.txt).

Expected behavior: successful build.

Also this run of scons creates directory with name $HOME which lead to
conjecture that $HOME environment variable is not defined during run of LaTeX.
Adding $HOME environment variable works as workaround:
= SConstruct.workaround =
import os
env = Environment()
env['ENV']['HOME'] = os.environ['HOME']
env.PDF('main.tex')
= end =

Bug emerged after upgrading from Ubuntu 9.10 to 10.04.
Using texlive from Ubuntu repositories (texlive 2009-07).
