[Bug 997913] Re: thunderbird fails to connect to mail server

2019-12-10 Thread Wolf Rogner
Thanks for getting back.

The issue could not be resolved in Ubuntu due to an error in the name
resolution (which the author of the service claims to be correct).
Having a DNS server point to two domains under Ubuntu resolves the first
one (which can be any of the two). This was the issue.

A work-around would be to set the smtp server to an IP-Adress (which
makes this solution a little inflexible).

However, due to the overwhelming amount of issues in Ubuntu I decided to
move to Mac. I have not regretted this move as the basics work fine.

You may close this issue.

[Bug 1826420] Re: Nautilus disk properties shows black circle

2019-07-03 Thread Wolf Rogner
Hi to all,

I used a MacOS icon theme. The issue did occur with Yaru but not with
Ambience.

I switched to macOS after the ongoing issues that reoccured with 19.04. I could
not bear with it any longer (12 years are a long time).

Sorry to be of no assistance to this and any other issues any longer.

cheers

[Bug 1826420] [NEW] Nautilus disk properties shows black circle

2019-04-25 Thread Wolf Rogner
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 19.04 / Nautilus 3.32.0 stable (?)

Mounting a disk (which does not show on the desktop may I add here as
well) and asking for disk properties gives a black circle.

Expected behaviour: different colours for used and unused parts, maybe
gray for the unusable meta data.

Current behaviour: a black disk telling me nothing.

(I have no idea as to why a perfectly working file manager had to get
crippled further, but someone managed).

I do have a custom theme but it happens with the default theme as well.

(Sorry my tone gets harsher every time but I really get tired being an
alpha tester).

[Bug 1825893] Re: Mounted disks not shown on desktop after enabling ubuntu-dock in Tweaks

2019-04-23 Thread Wolf Rogner
I think triaging to gnome-shell-extensions might be the wrong approach
in this case.

The icons did appear before and do appear in other installations. It is
just on this machine that after enabling ubuntu-dock they do not appear
any more (I do not want to verify this behaviour on any other machines
as the missing icon leads to dirty unmounts)

There must be a setting somewhere to enable disks again. There used to
be a setting in gnome-tweak-tools (but was left out in gnome-tweaks).
Also there was a setting in gsettings / dconf which is gone as well.

So the question is: Where does UBUNTU (and not Gnome) store its setting
about how to deal with mounted devices?

[Bug 1825625] [NEW] mutter framebuffer scaling blurs display

2019-04-20 Thread Wolf Rogner
Public bug reported:

Setting the framebuffer scaling (with gsettings set org.gnome.mutter
experimental-features "['scale-monitor-framebuffer']") allows the
display on HiDPi to be scaled to something different than
100%/200%/300%.

Which would be fine.

However, the display is rendered such that most applications provide
blurred display of text and graphics.

This is not always the case (e.g. system settings are displayed
correctly, Thunderbird and Firefox are blurred).

Also the screen flickers when selection menus or resizing the windows.
A black border appears around the windows where the shadow should appear. It
gets removed a few seconds later but still is irritating.

This issue is not urgent, just annoying. It can be worked around by
removing the settings in gsetting / dconf.

[Bug 1812637] [NEW] systemd-resolved stops resolving

2019-01-21 Thread Wolf Rogner
Public bug reported:

Regularly (= after about 15 mins of use) the systemd-resolved service
stops resolving DNS names (any).

Configuration:
Two domains defined - one internal, one for external services
DNS server does not provide DNSSEC services
Both domains are in the search path (served by DHCP)

Effect:
Clients refuse to resolve internal domain servers (short or FQDN) after about
15 mins.

Workaround:
from the client CLI
sudo systemctl restart systemd-resolved.service

Background:
A Github error (https://github.com/systemd/systemd/issues/6490) describes the
cause to be (missing) DNSSEC.

I found discussions about "the correct way" DNS works (with only one
domain).

Happens exclusively on Ubuntu clients (Windows, Mac and Fedora worked
fine).

[Bug 1769383] Re: Ubuntu dock/launcher is shown on the lock screen

2018-12-28 Thread Wolf Rogner
I long have given up on this.

However here are two more observations.

Confirming Simon P.'s (simpre) observation that applications are not
docked.

Another issue: when clicking on the activities button once, it does not
show the app overview. It requires a second click.

This is also true with any activation (like Meta-L to lock the machine).

Another anecdote:
Yesterday I did some programming. I locked the machine and put it to sleep
(another function that used to work reliably and now is completely broken) but
when I came back, it was up and running. The IDE was visible. I could position
the cursor and enter text.

The text was not echoed on the screen but after unlocking the text was
there. If this was crucial code anyone could render it unusable or add
to it.

@Andrea Azzarone: This is a severe security issue to me and many others.
I hope the proposed fix (as noted above) is really fixing this issue and
comes out soon. It's a shame that something like this passes rollout
(although I have some understanding for that) but even more so the
initial ignorance and reluctance to trust hundreds of users that there
is an issue that needs quick fixing (which I have no understanding for
whatsoever).

[Bug 1722455] Re: Creation of mail/contact/calendar accounts impossible

2018-12-19 Thread Wolf Rogner
I want to connect to an IMAP and SMTP service.
I have to enter the email address (which is something other than the login
name).
Do I give the login name, I cannot forward, do I give the email address, I can
forward but the login into the server fails.
"Error connecting to IMAP server
Invalid certificate."
Ignoring brings me to SMTP
"Error connecting to SMTP server
Could not connect to :
Connection refused"

I can use Encryption: None, STARTTLS after connecting or SSL on a dedicated
port (where I cannot specify the port)
Here I can press Try Again as long as I want.

No config file is generated, I can Cancel the process and have no way to
access CAL or CARDs

There are some providers (mostly cloud services) hard coded but a
general connection option is not available (as is in Thunderbird).

If this does not work, Gnome Calendar, Addressbook, Geary and related
applications are extremly limited in the usefulness.

I first filed this with Ubuntu 17.10, then tested with Budgy 17.10, then
18.04 and now with 18.10.

[Bug 1722455] Re: Creation of mail/contact/calendar accounts impossible

2018-12-13 Thread Wolf Rogner
There is no error message it just does not work or allow the creation of
calendars.

Try to install SOGo and connect to a user calendar. You will see that
you cannot even enter the parameters.

I found a workaround and currently use Thunderbird.

A solution would be to install Evolution, create the calendar entries
and then delete Evolution again. This works as well (and creates the
config file mentioned above).

I cannot add any more information to this. Sorry

However, have a merry Christmas

[Bug 1804364] [NEW] Thunderbird fails to print duplex

2018-11-20 Thread Wolf Rogner
Public bug reported:

Thunderbird does not print duplex even when set to do so.

Printer settings, about:config is ignored.

Resetting about:configs print.print_duplex restores a string value. When
setting it, an integer is set. This is the same behaviour that firefox
exposes.

Did not happen before the change to the new engine.

Behaviour can only be observed on Linux (not on Mac).

[Bug 1804296] [NEW] firefox deletes saved web pages

2018-11-20 Thread Wolf Rogner
Public bug reported:

Firefox 63.0 deletes saved web pages.

Reproduce:

Open any web page
File -> Save page as
Save it (I saved into several different locations to verify this was not
related to the directory)
This will save the html file and a folder containing all embedded elements

Close tab or application
This will delete (=rm) the html file but will leave the folder and sub-content
intact.

Expected:

Saved files should remain on the disk

[Bug 1797796] Re: embedding OLE objects in Writer leads to blurred print

played around a little more:

Downloaded LibreOffice 6.2.0.0-beta1 AppImage and low and behold, the

I suggest we drop this bug report and I accept the blurred embeddiments.

Seems like some regression on LOs side.

c) theme is ... well which one does get used there? Certainly not mine

[Bug 1797796] Re: embedding OLE objects in Writer leads to blurred print

2018-11-19 Thread Wolf Rogner
Sorry about my unprecise report last time.

In 18.04(.1) I observed this issue only when embedding OLE objects. I
first attributed this to maybe a slight difference in width or height of
the embedded object.

I can reign out this as I have adjusted the size.

Under 18.10 I not only see this obscured embeddiment happen with OLE
objects but with any object that I include. Be it presentations,
documents or spread sheets. Further, the icons from the toolbar are
blurred as well.

This regards the default installation (6.1.2.1)

I tried to pin it down to screen resolution (my Mac has 2550 x 1600 with
a default of 200% scaling). Even with 100% I can verify the blurred
display (although it requires a magnifying glass to see).

Today I figured that using cropped images in presentations has negative
impact on the display of fonts (font size and font family change
randomly).

In comparison, I tried AppImage (6.1.3) from LO site.

Here I cannot see any of the blurred effects at all. Embedded components
and icons are displayed sharp.

Personally I come to the conclusion that the default installation
packages must be compiled with settings incompatible with the display
manager.

Concluding: Anything other than bare text gets rendered blurred in some
way.

This issue does not happen under 18.04(.1). Only on 18.10.
It happens in the default installation.
Current version is 6.1.2.1 and any embedded file or object gets rendered
blurred.

Haven't tried snap only AppImage. With AppImage, all embediments are
rendered precisely.

[Bug 1802658] [NEW] Some USB devices not mouted

2018-11-10 Thread Wolf Rogner
Public bug reported:

Some USB sticks do not get mounted and are not recognised by the system
as scsi devices (or any device at all)

If I insert a USB stick into my machine, one gets recognised and mounted
the other one doesn't. No trace of insert events in the system log.

The same series of USB sticks gets mounted on the same machine if booted with a
live 18.04.1 image or a MacOS boot disk (thus eliminating the machines as
source of problem).
On other machines running Ubuntu Budgie or Apple MacOS all of the sticks get
mounted without problems (thus eliminating the sticks as source of problem)

This is reproducible on any machine that runs Ubuntu 18.10 with up to
date patch levels (thus indicating it may be a Ubuntu 18.10 issue)

I use SanDisk USB 3.0 sticks (same vendor and product IDs)

[Bug 1800333] Re: Ubuntu dock not working properly

2018-11-01 Thread Wolf Rogner
@Marc

re d)

I have a terminal on my dock.
I can open this terminal from the lock screen
I do have sudo rights on my account
I can enter commands that are kept in the buffer
I can press ENTER to get the command executed

I just leave it up to your judgement if this is a security issue.

[Bug 1799038] Re: Ubuntu 18.10 does not suspend on lid close

2018-10-24 Thread Wolf Rogner
In journalctl I found that whenever the machine reached suspend target,
ACPI kicked in to wake the machine again.

kernel: ACPI: Low-level resume complete

Today, I put the machine to sleep (using the alt option on the shutdown menu).
The machine woke up every two seconds and went to sleep again (for over half an
hour).

Finally and for no obvious reason, the machine kept sleeping until I
woke it up 3 hours later.

Weired

[Bug 1799038] Re: Ubuntu 18.10 does not suspend on lid close

2018-10-24 Thread Wolf Rogner
I have figured out how to make the machine go to sleep.

press alt on the shutdown menu makes the machine go to sleep and
immediately wake up again. Do it again and it goes to sleep.

HOWEVER: This triggers another issue: Resume does not work every second
time (requires reboot).

I could not figure out why this behaviour is like it is. Since the
syslog is not the destination of logs any more (journalctl is) the
messages are somewhat arbitrary.

[Bug 1799039] [NEW] Apple Facetime HD PCI (Broadcom 1570) not accessible

2018-10-21 Thread Wolf Rogner
Public bug reported:

This is a reopened bug report related to #1716673: Apple Facetime HD PCI
(Broadcom 1570) not accessible

The camera still is not accessible. In the old report some suggested
that I should try the latest kernel. Well, with 18.10 the kernel is even
newer than the one available at the time of reporting.

If no one writes a driver for the camera, there will never be a module
for it.

The module that ships with Ubuntu is not working.

I do understand that rolling out a new version is tedious. But it should be
possible to
a) not permanently produce regressions and
b) include some improvements beyond some irrelevant GUI overhauls.

btw. My machine was purchased in 2015. I don't think that PCIe is such a
new technology.

(sorry for my serious frustration about 18.10. I thought with 18.04
onward Canonical might have cought on)

[Bug 1799038] [NEW] Ubuntu 18.10 does not suspend on lid close

2018-10-21 Thread Wolf Rogner
Public bug reported:

After an upgrade to Ubuntu 18.10 suspend to RAM due to closing the lid
on notebooks does not work any more.

The machine goes to suspend mode but wakes up immediately due to some
events (can be network, or others).

In 18.04 this issue was fixed (we had the same situation with any
version since 14.04).

Seems a regression.

Mitigation reports suggesting to change /etc/systemd/logind.conf are WRONG. The
changes do NOTHING.
One might spare the time to experiment.

[Bug 1797796] [NEW] embedding OLE objects in Writer leads to blurred print

2018-10-14 Thread Wolf Rogner
Public bug reported:

Steps to create:

Open blank Writer document
Insert OLE object -> Libreoffice Calc
enter some numbers
leave OLE object

-> The object is rendered blurred.

Enter OLE object (double click)
-> the content is rendered correctly

Print document
-> the content of the OLE object is printed in lower quality than rest of
document

Combined documents with text and calculations cannot be printed in unified
quality.
-> This type of document is not up to office standards.

Only on Ubuntu (on Mac this cannot be observed)

[Bug 1767402] Re: hash mismatch or wrong accept-license key trying to install virtualbox-ext-pack 5.2.10

2018-05-07 Thread Wolf Rogner
Are we serious about this?

This bug affects a lot of users (see list on the right and probably thousands
more).
Messing around in packages with hashes is nontrivial, repackaging either.
This is an official repository that should provide solid, proven and stable
packages.

And we want users to fiddle around?

You can't be serious.

HERE IS A MUCH MORE USER-FRIENDLY WORKAROUND:

Go to virtualbox.org
Download Extensions
In VB/Preferences, load the original file
Wait for this package to get fixed properly

[Bug 1768741] Re: hplip does not wake up printer

2018-05-05 Thread Wolf Rogner
Cudos to my wife: Here is a more detailed and accurate description of
the issue:

Preset: Printer is installed on Ubuntu 18.04

Turning on the printer and printing any document -> works
Putting notebook into suspend, after wakeup printing a document -> not printing
Mitigation:
- reboot printer
- reinstall printer software

After printer suspended (usually after 5 mins), printing a document -> not
printing
After manually waking up the printer from the display and printing a document
-> not printing

In all cases of not printing:
If the printer queue was held, resuming from the GUI (both methods, from
Settings and the Additional printer settings queue view) the queue goes into
printing status and reverts to held.

If the printer is freshly rebooted, starting a held queue leads to
printing the document.

[Bug 1768741] [NEW] hplip does not wake up printer

2018-05-03 Thread Wolf Rogner
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 18.04 fresh install
Printer: Color Laserjet Pro MFP M477fdw

The printer suspends after 5 mins to save power.

Expected: A print request should wake the printer and print.
Actual: The printer queue goes on hold

Mitigation measures:
1) wake printer manually (from the display) + unpause queue -> does not print
2) wake printer manually + restart queue -> does not print
3) restart printer (WHY???) + unpause queue -> PRINTS !!!

This behaviour can be reproduced in 18.04 and does not exist in previous
versions of Ubuntu

[Bug 1768225] Re: SD card not mounted

2018-05-02 Thread Wolf Rogner
I can hardly answer this question.

I got a new notebook and installed 17.10 (beta) on it. I could use the SD card
initially.
Then after official launch, all external devices caused system hangs during
mount.

After a restart, the SD card could be mounted as sdc

With 18.04 the device drivers (sdhci and sdhci-pci) are not loaded and
the device does not get recognized.

Even when loading the modules the medium does not get mounted.

As this is my production machine and I am using it heavily this semester
I am rather reluctant to experimenting with different kernels (I am not
sure but the disability to mount harddisks after suspend to RAM came in
at the same time as I installed a premature kernel).

[Bug 1768225] [NEW] SD card not mounted

2018-05-01 Thread Wolf Rogner
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 18.04 after fresh install:
HW: Macbook Pro Retina 13"

SD cards are not recognized nor mounted.

The sdhci driver is not loaded by default.
Manual loading of sdhci and sdhci-pci does not make the SD card mount or be
recognized (loading the driver is acknowledged in the syslog)

Adding a configuration file under /etc/modprobe.d with

   options sdhci debug_quirks2=4

does not remedy the situation.

(the cards and adapters tested work fine on other - older - Macs)

[Bug 1736820] Re: Laptop doesn't suspend on lid close

2018-04-30 Thread Wolf Rogner
I could narrow this issue to the NVIDIA graphics card.
If Intel is enabled (prime-select) the issue disappears and the machine sleeps
sound and quiet.

I could narrow this issue down to the NVIDIA driver.
Setting the graphics card to Intel eliminates the issue.

[Bug 1767633] [NEW] Installation of Ubuntu 18.04 crashes

2018-04-28 Thread Wolf Rogner
Public bug reported:

Installing Ubuntu 18.04 on a Macbook Pro Retina 15 breaks during copying
files to the destination drive.

Reproducable

Installation parameters:

Encrypt HD (install LVM)
Install 3rd party drivers

After selecting user, HD encryption key and committing,
Installation program crashes during file copy.

HD is left in a semi-installed state.

Restart of Installation not possible any more (complains about already
encrypted HD and reverts to parameter settings)

[Bug 1715582] Re: "Operation not supported by backend" when backing up to smb server

2018-03-21 Thread Wolf Rogner
Did you try all the settings that I described in this thread?

1. I had to create a /var/cache/samba directory (which you might probably have
already).
2. The settings dialog has changed.

Storage location
  Storage location: Network Server
  Server Address: smb://server/share_name
  Folder: /complete/path/to/backup/directory

I had to play around for a while myself to figure this out. Setting the
/ was essential (as the path is concatenated as python strings).

On the backend, you must have write permission (the whole path, not just
the destination directory).

I hope this helps.

[Bug 1754713] [NEW] Android device not accessible after suspend to RAM

2018-03-09 Thread Wolf Rogner
Public bug reported:

After reboot connecting an Android phone, on the phone, I get asked if I
want to allow device access. Confirming mounts the devices storage in
Nautilus. Access to files stored on the internal storage of the phone is
possible (r/w).

After suspend and resume, the same connection procedure provides
notification that the device is available, the device seems mounted
normally but access to internal phone storage provides an empty nautilus
window (no "Internal storage" device can be seen).

Several dismount/mount operations leave the situation unchanged. I
cannot get access to the internal data of the phone.

The device gets detected and mounted but access to storage is not
possible.

Rebooting the computer remedies the issue (but a reboot can't be a
solution to connection problems).

[Bug 1717486] Re: icons missing after 2 fingers/horizontal scrolling on the dock

2018-03-09 Thread Wolf Rogner
I have established a workaround which involves no session locking

from a terminal window:
$ gsettings set org.gnome.shell.extensions.dash-to-dock dock-position 'LEFT'

I added an alias to my .bash_aliases to speed the process.
LEFT can be substituted to where your bar is ({'TOP','RIGHT','BOTTOM','LEFT'}).

Tested the device with a live USB.
Mounting works fine.

The device is /dev/sdb !!! not /dev/mmcblk0. The device is recognized as
Apple SD Card Reader

The local hard disk on the system is encrypted. Booting from it - the SD
card is not recognized.

Can drive encryption be the reason why mounting a sdx device without
encryption is not possible?

[Bug 1748520] [NEW] SDXC card reader not recognized

2018-02-09 Thread Wolf Rogner
Public bug reported:

On Macbook Pro 13" Retina (MacbookPro12,1 mid 2015) the SDXC card slot
is non-responsive.

uname -a

Installing sdhci and sdhci-pci modules (with or without adding a
/etc/modprobe.d/sdhci.conf to configure option debug_quirks2) does not
work.

After a reboot, the drivers are not installed.
A device /dev/mmcblk0 is missing.

This used to be different in previous kernels 4.13... (although I have
no record when last I tested).

[Bug 1716024] Re: Mouse cursor movements are jaggy

2018-02-08 Thread Wolf Rogner
In 17.10 there is no Xorg by default. 17.10 runs under Wayland.

There was a key combination to switch to magnified display. Setting a
fixed resolution does not change the visuals but the coordinate system
of the mouse. After figuring out about the magnification and resetting
it, the mouse worked fine.

=> Can be closed.

[Bug 1727653] Re: error: can't start new thread

2018-01-28 Thread Wolf Rogner
Just adding -n 4096 or -s 16384 alone or in combination does not do the
trick.

Only adding these two PLUS removing -v 100 works.

This and the fact that on my mbpr15a the original line works fine
confuses me.

[Bug 1727653] Re: error: can't start new thread

2018-01-28 Thread Wolf Rogner
Sorry for the delay, I wanted to make sure my answer is accurate.

I have three machines set up with 17.10 afresh.
mbpr13a 8GB, 4.13.0-25-generic
mbpr15a 16GB, 4.13.0-25-generic
mbpr13b 16GB, 4.13.0-32-generic

mbpr15a does backups ooB
mbpr13a/b have the reported issue

The original line in
/etc/xdg/autostart/org.gnome.DejaDup.Monitor.desktop

Exec=sh -c "ulimit -v 100; exec /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/deja-dup
/deja-dup-monitor"

leads to the issue

Setting ulimit -n or ulimit -s additionally does not remedy the error

This line worked

Exec=sh -c "ulimit -s 16384; ulimit -n 4096; exec /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-
gnu/deja-dup/deja-dup-monitor"

@Vaclav #35: I always test after reboot and consequently after suspend to RAM.
The solution works under those conditions.

What irritates my: mbpr15a works with the original line. ???

[Bug 1727653] Re: error: can't start new thread

2018-01-26 Thread Wolf Rogner
I cannot confirm that ulimit -s 16384 will heal the issue (suggested in
#30). I have inserted ulimit -s 16384 to no avail.

Exec=sh -c "ulimit -v 100; ulimit -s 16384; ulimit -n 4096; exec
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/deja-dup/deja-dup-monitor"

-> still causes the issue.

Trying to check my file count I realized that Nautilus interupts file
count and restarts regularly. This behaviour might be triggered by
several symlinks.

Can it be that duplicity tries to follow a directory structure and gets
confused if circular references via symlinks exist?

If so, I have to draw a link tree for further analysis.

[Bug 1743013] [NEW] deja-dup fails when launched automatically

2018-01-12 Thread Wolf Rogner
Public bug reported:

In #1727653 an error was reported that stated that backup using
duplicity failed.

However, the error only manifests in duplicity but is triggered by the
calling Deja-Dup.

Launching Deja-Dup automatically will ALWAYS lead to the error.

Launching Deja-Dup from the console/bash will NEVER lead to the error.

Any attempts to set number of open file limits do not remedy the issue.

Please refer to #1727653 and associated errors as all analysis have gone
into duplicity so far.
