[Bug 1850887] Re: Audio / Sound reverts to HDMI when power event occurs

2019-11-11 Thread Wissam Youssef
Disabling switch on port and switching on connect for me is not ideal, since I
have a bluetooth headphones that I still want to use from time to time.
I even tried to set a default sink in default.pa, still get hdmi on power
events.
Installed pavucontrol to disable hdmi output, it just resets on power events.

I just use
pacmd set-default-sink
After each power event, annoying... hopefully this is fixed soon.

[Bug 1507753] [NEW] arm package fails to pass doubles from python to C++

2015-10-19 Thread Youssef
Public bug reported:

The ARMv7 packaged version of python-omniorb fails to properly pass
doubles from python client to C++ server. For some reason, rebuilding
the package from source solves the issue so I'm unsure of how / where
the problem originates.

Steps to reproduce on an Ubuntu14.04 machine:
1. Grab and sudo extract the arm root file system
linaro-trusty-developer-20140522-661.tar.gz from here
http://releases.linaro.org/14.05/ubuntu/trusty-images/developer/

2. Make sure you have the following installed on the host machine: qemu-
user-static debootstrap binfmt-support

3. Copy the qemu-arm-static and resolv.conf into the rootfs
eg.
sudo cp /usr/bin/qemu-arm-static /my/rootfs/usr/bin/
sudo cp /etc/resolv.conf /my/rootfs/etc/

4. chroot into the arm rootfs:
eg.
sudo chroot /my/rootfs

5. install python-omniorb

6. Use Example 2 from here to create a simple C++ server except change
the IDL to take in and echo a double:
http://omniorb.sourceforge.net/omni40/omniORB/omniORB002.html

7. Use Example 2 from here to create a simple python based client using the
same IDL generated in step 6 above.
http://omniorb.sourceforge.net/omnipy3/omniORBpy/omniORBpy002.html

I used the value 6.12346, going from python -> python it works fine,
going from c++ -> c++ fine, however going from python -> C++ I get
Upcall -6.42765e+247 Floats also work fine and the problem only seems
to exist with doubles. Upping the logging to 40 in omniORB.cfg, it
looks as though the word order is swapped.

Even odder, if I sudo apt-get source python-omniorb and then rebuild the
package using dpkg-buildpackage -rfakeroot -uc -b (Which I thought
should produce an identical output) those packages work just fine.

  STABLE UPDATE JUSTIFICATION

[Impact] This is a significant bug as it makes working with any ODF

2012-02-06 Thread Youssef Eldakar
I am attaching bold-arabic.odt, which has two Arabic words in bold that
display as hollow rectangles.

apport-collect gets stuck, most likely because it is being run behind a
proxy. I have yet to find a solution.

[Bug 899841] [NEW] Blank screen on booting Ubuntu 11.10 from RAID

2011-12-04 Thread Youssef Eldakar
Public bug reported:

I run a network of machines each having 4 hard drives. Most are
installed as JBOD (just a bunch of disks), but some are installed as
RAID, where / is on a RAID1 device. After upgrading to 11.10, the RAID
machines display a blank screen right at the beginning of the boot
process and stop there - most of the time. The system does respond to
Ctrl+Alt+Del at that state, and, every once in a while after many
successive reboots, the system does boot successfully. I tested this on
two different hardware configurations (nVidia chipset and Intel chipset)
and with both 64- and 32-bit Ubuntu with no difference in results. The
JBOD machines do not suffer from this issue.

Turning off modesetting does not seem to help. Given that the non-RAID
(jBOD) setup works fine, I am thinking the issue is probably a GRUB+RAID
issue, not a graphics issue. I noticed in 11.10 that /boot/grub/grub.cfg
uses mduuid/* as opposed to md/*. Could that have something to do with
the problem? I wonder if there is a preseed configuration to instruct
grub-installer to use md/* instead of mduuid/*.

[Bug 886474] [NEW] Poor audio quality with ffcook

2011-11-05 Thread Youssef Eldakar
Public bug reported:

After upgrading to Ubuntu 11.10 (libavcodec-extra-53 4:0.7.2.1ubuntu1),
audio quality during playback of FFmpeg COOK streams (ffcook), found in
RealMedia files, is poor as a buzz is present during the full length of
the stream. This is a regression since Ubuntu 11.04, where FFmpeg COOK
streams played back with good audio quality.

FFmpeg Sipr/Acelp.net streams (ffsipr), also found in RealMedia files,
are not affected.

[Bug 743136] Re: grub2 fails to install on md0

2011-08-11 Thread Youssef Eldakar
Is this supposed to be fixed in Natty? I am using a standard partman-
auto-raid/recipe in a preseeded Natty install and am running into the
same issue:

d-i partman-auto-raid/recipe string \
1 2 0 jfs / \
/dev/sda5#/dev/sdc5 \
.\
0 4 0 swap - \
/dev/sda6#/dev/sdb6#/dev/sdc6#/dev/sdd6 \
.\
1 2 0 jfs /usr \
/dev/sda7#/dev/sdc7 \
.\
5 4 0 jfs /var \
/dev/sda8#/dev/sdb8#/dev/sdc8#/dev/sdd8 \
.\
0 4 0 jfs /tmp \
/dev/sda9#/dev/sdb9#/dev/sdc9#/dev/sdd9 \
.\
5 4 0 jfs /srv \
/dev/sda1#/dev/sdb1#/dev/sdc1#/dev/sdd1 \
.

Symlinking /dev/md0 to /dev/md/0 before running the grub-install seems
to get it to succeed.

I am sorry if this is not the appropriate place for this comment.

[Bug 558569] Re: Unable start as live cd Lucid Beta 2

2010-07-19 Thread Youssef Eldakar
I, too, am experiencing trouble with Ubuntu 10.04 with a 2.6.32-21
-generic-based installer on:

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8623 [Apollo
CLE266] integrated CastleRock graphics (rev 03)

I am doing a text mode netboot install and not setting up X. The
installer is unusable with distorted broken dialogs and unreadable font.
I tried booting the kernel with video=vga16fb:off,viafb:off, but that
did not fix the broken screen.

I understand this is still an open issue, but I am at least looking for
a workaround to be able to netinstall machines in text mode.

[Bug 232469] Re: wget does not use network proxy in some cases

2010-05-13 Thread Youssef Eldakar
I am running Lucid behind a non-transparent proxy. I was experiencing
the same issue of wget not working in postinst scripts while installing
packages, but I was able to get it to work by setting http_proxy in
/etc/wgetrc. I would love to fix this bug, but I am confused as to which
is the culprit: postinst scripts, wget, apt-get, gnome-terminal, gnome-
control-center, or something else.

Re: [Bug 497788] Re: zephyr host manager failed to restart

2009-12-17 Thread Youssef Dergham
Thanks Evan.

I did Ctrl+C because it was stuck for 10 minutes on trying to restart
the host server and it wasn't going anywhere.

I will switch to barnowl.

A few things:

- First, it looks like you Ctrl-C'd zephyr-clients while it was
starting up. Why? That's what caused the error.

- Are you behind a NAT, and what zephyr realm are you using?

- The barnowl package is a fork of owl. It's better maintained, more
performant, leaks less memory, and is completely feature compatible with
owl. I'd recommend using barnowl instead.

It sounds likely that something is misconfigured on your end - is the
computer on which you're installing zephyr behind a NAT? The zephyr
protocol doesn't work behind NATs.

Sorry for the dumb question, but how do you migrate to grub2?

On Sun, Aug 23, 2009 at 4:53 PM, Colin Watson
cjwat...@canonical.comwrote:

grub2 handles configuration in a completely different way; it's
extremely unlikely that anyone would encounter this particular problem
with it. We'll still have to support grub for Karmic and probably beyond
for upgrades, so this bug is *not* closeable just because we're now
using grub2 by default, but I'm not sure that it's worth putting lots of
energy into it since we already know it's a hideous can of worms. For
9.10 and beyond I'd advise affected users to migrate to GRUB 2.

[Bug 370597] Re: Screen tearing at top of screen with VSync enabled on Compiz with fullscreen OpenGL programs

2009-06-17 Thread Youssef
i can confirm this on ubuntu 9.04 using the provided nvidia diver (180)
and also on driver version 185 !

If we set unredirect fullscreen windows on, the tearing on fullscreen
stops completely. But this results in blinking whenever we right-click
in the fullscreen app: the desktop shows and then re-disappears, and
this is VERY annoying rendering the fullscreen experience an unbearable
one.

If we set the option unredirect fullscreen windows off, the blinking
stops completely but the tearing comes back in a horrible break line at
the top of the screen.

[Bug 260932] Re: Graphic corruption lines ruining ubuntu

2008-11-30 Thread Youssef
hey i want to reopen this bug because the problem STILL persists in
intrepid, and it's very annoying and renders the ubuntu visual
experience awful. I'll attach two more files so that you can see what i
mean. Take the screensaver solarwinds for example (jiggly variation). It
should look like coloured disks doing some motion with blur. Ubuntu has
it drawn crumpled all over with corruption lines that it's a pain to
look at.

** Description changed:

i have recently noticed a VERY annoying bug in ubuntu. It seems that the
graphics show horizontal corruption lines (or break lines) ! I have the
accelerated nvidia driver installed, but the nvidia driver on vista
never shows this kind of behavior. This is very apparent in screensavers
and desktop effects, and especially when showing the meta balls
screensaver. I captured a video of this screensaver to prove what i'm
saying. You can noticed several and numerous horizontal break lines.

Think about it, in windows, thanks to the compact widgets, a program
with a LOT of options and options would fit on the screen but the same
program, if designed for ubuntu, would need a much larger screen to fit.
I can fix this in ubuntu by choosing 83 as font dpi, thus making the
fonts smaller and fit more text in 1 scree. But this does not always fix
the oversized widgets problem. This shoul really be investigated because
a program like photoshop gets some good working space in windows, but if
EVER ported to linux it wouldn't have half of that space since the
precious screen space would be wasted on oversized widgets.

[Bug 260932] [NEW] Graphic corruption lines ruining ubuntu

2008-08-24 Thread Youssef
Public bug reported:

i have recently noticed a VERY annoying bug in ubuntu.

System description.

VAIO VGN-FZ35G
Nvidia 8400GT with 128 dedicated RAM
Intel Centrino 2.10 GHz
Ubuntu 8.04.1
Compiz effects enabled.

Btw i also see this behavior on my desktop machine with an nvidia
graphics card

[Bug 260936] [NEW] screensaver does not start if ubuntu booted on battery

2008-08-24 Thread Youssef
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-screensaver

i have noticed that the screensaver does not start if the system was
booted up using battery power, it only works on a AC power bootup. I
tried meddling with the setting to no avail. Others have also observed
such behavior, it doesn't work on the lock screen in that case neither.

It appears that killing the gnome-screensaver process and starting it
again fixes the problem.

[Bug 229894] [NEW] Keyjnote transitions not available by default

2008-05-13 Thread Youssef
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: keyjnote

it seems that keyjnote only enables a small number of its transitions by
default. And there is no easy way to enable them. The problem is that
this is having a regression effect on the GUI (package: keyjnoteGUI)
which is not getting the full list of available transitions anymore. So
this has disabled many good looking effects when working with the GUI.
All transitions should be enabled by default in keyjnote, so that the
GUI gets the full list (for those who don't want them all they can just
uncheck some of them but for those who DO now they have the choice to
select them). The attachement is to verify what i'm saying, the output
of the command keyjnote -l that lists all transitions.
