I easily fixed it without text manipulation by going into Low Graphics
Mode and logging into xfce normally then changing the WM theme to
something else. I didnt know this was a known problem, i thought i
crashed Xubuntu on my first day of using it.

[Bug 670847] Re: 10.10 server sun x2100 broadcom5750 - up but not running

2010-11-05 Thread buzz
I have two ethernet ports at the back of the machine - port1 which is
eth0 and port2 which is eth1. By accident this morning I connected the
lan cable to the wrong port (port2 instead of port1) to continue this
severe ubuntu installation failure and everything works.

This is the dumbest mistake I have ever made. Apologies for taking up
everyones time.

[Bug 670847] [NEW] 10.10 server sun x2100 broadcom5750 - up but not running

2010-11-04 Thread buzz
Public bug reported:

Just spent the last 4 days trying to load a minimal server config on 4
servers - finally done this only to discover that eth0 is UP but not
RUNNING.

All the servers have static IPs.

I have tried removing interface-mtu from /etc/dhcp3/dhclient.conf - no
effect.

looking at dmesg, I have ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): eth0: link is not ready -
otherwise dmesg seems to pass everything else

ifconfig says that eth0 is UP but not RUNNING

Not too sure how to procede on this one - I'm stumped. I've looked at a
lot of similar issues, such as removing the NetworkManager (which isn't
installed).

very grateful for any form of feedback on this

Thanks and regards

I just swapped eth0 for eth1 in /etc/network/interfaces and I have the
same result, so it's not to do with the broadcom controller, just the
standard install (?).

[Bug 338173] Re: backlight-brightness not changeable on samsung p560

2010-03-18 Thread buzz
This report still has some valid points. Although the 2.6.32 kernel now
supports the serio force_release sysfs node, the users of the samsung
p560 still have to insert which keys needs the forced key release. At
the moment i do not know of any database which handels those cases, do
you?

Furthermore, after the keys are working, there are no backlight changes
within the nouveau or within the nvidia driver. The only way to change
the brightness are smartdimmer or nvclock, and therefore needs some
extra script in order to work with those keys.

[Bug 486324] Re: Wrong Warning and error opening terminal for debugging

2009-12-11 Thread buzz
The problem is within the anjuta source code. Anjuta tries to start
anjuta_launcher, but the filename is called anjuta-launcher. Symlink
/usr/bin/anjuta-launcher to /usr/bin/anjuta_launcher fixes this problem.

At the moment i'm using rc4 and rc7, doesn't matter at all. This is a
new feature that will remain in the kernel.

Please check
 * for the file /sys/devices/platform/i8042/serio0/force_release
 * that you entered the line as complete line, without linebreak.
 * that you entered the line before the exit 0, otherwise it will not be
executed

The problem here are devices which have been created with old versions

[Bug 428435] Re: external harddrive (luks encrypted) will not mount automatically

2009-10-12 Thread buzz
Debugging the libblkid revealed that the probe functions detects two
filesystem magics on the device.

luks and ext4

as the blkid is set to be not tolerant it aborts the probe and sends a
null pointer. if i change blkid to be tolerant it works fine, it shows
me the password dialog and mounts the harddrive without problems.

[Bug 428435] Re: external harddrive (luks encrypted) will not mount automatically

2009-09-22 Thread buzz
I can confirm this situation with a new installed karmic version.
Unencrypted USB Stick mounts fine (except nautilus is not opening the
window), but encrypted external hard disc fails to prompt for a password
and is only mountable via terminal.

[Bug 338182] Re: Samsung P560 brightness keys block keyboard and produce all-or-nothing effect

2009-09-22 Thread buzz
I'm attaching a new cleaner patch against the current karmic kernel
2.6.31-10. It adds the necessary quirks for the Samsung P560 and P210
notebook.

Submitted upstream patch has been rejected as the next kernel .32 will
add a external bitmap table which allows applying quirks via sysfs. In
favour of a out-of-the-box experience with karmic please add this patch
to the karmic kernel.

Affects linux kernel, not a hal-info. Hal related fixes are already
integrated.

[Bug 420918] Re: please update libcapi

2009-09-08 Thread buzz
As the developer of the new official libcapi20 i would be glad about the
integration in the new upcoming ubuntu release. This new version has
been successfully tested as well as in many test cases and officially in
OpenSuSE since version 11.1. Every reported bug has been fixed and is
integrated within the isdn4linux cvs tree. I'm going to maintain this
tree in the future and i'm open for any further support.

Please update to this new version. Thanks a lot.

after I type lsusb. There is nothing in dmesg until I type lsusb. Also

RE: [Bug 123920] Re: Bluetooth Logitech Dinovo Keyboard/Mouse don't work

2008-11-25 Thread buzz

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you on this one. I've been sitting here
trying to work out what the problem is.

The bluetooth dongle is 0.5 meters away from the mouse and there is
nothing in the way and the rechargeable batteries are new. There are no
other 2.4GHz sources nearby - a wifi source is 10m away.

I still have the same issue. The juddering is always there when I start
the machine. I use just firefox, thunderbird and netbeans. Sometimes the
juddering stops after a couple of hours, somethimes after 6 hours, most
of the time it's still there at 7pm when I turn off the machine for the
day.

When browsing, this isn't an issue. When editing code and trying to
place the cursor at an exact spot in the editor and then the cursor
jumps away from the correct spot (just as I'm clicking for insertion) -
this is a real pain.

But, if no one else is experiancing this then it must be related to the
way I originally set up the machine (nothing fancy, just a
regular/vanilla install).

The lag you describe is usually a connection issue in my experience,
try moving the receiver closer to the mouse itself (using a USB
extension cable for example) and make certain that no other 2.4ghz
sources can interfere with the dongle

Update

It's now 4 hours later than my last post and the juddering seems to have
disappeared - not too sure what to put it down to. It's a big machine
with dualcore, so it can't be processing power.

Anyhow, if it returns I'll leave another post.

Thanks again

2008-11-05 Thread buzz
I've just spent a little more time trying to work out what the issue is.
I had a pretty loaded machine a couple of days ago.

I've booted up. I have two mice attached to the machine, one dinovo the

exhibits the following:

1. if I move the mouse very, very slowly then the mouse moves in an

[Bug 123920] Re: Bluetooth Logitech Dinovo Keyboard/Mouse don't work

2008-11-04 Thread buzz
Just to add to this that I've just installed 8.10 and the dinovo
mouse/keyboard work fine (after pressing the appropriate connect
buttons).

My only gripe is that there is a very bad lag on the mouse pointer - it
slowly follows the physical mouse, requiring the hand to always
compensate.

On the other hand, a thousand thanks for getting the dinovo to work with
a straight forward installation.

[Bug 192788] Re: kacpid hogs cpu

2008-05-28 Thread Buzz Armstrong
(Tried this solution from manoj_isi and it worked - incredible but
true...)

Solution to kacpid which works fine for me :
After booting windows when boot linux kacpid starts,

(This seems to be the catalyst for the problem - dual boot going from
Windows to linux)

to stop it just cut the power supply to your PC including UPS if any ,
without shutting down (obviously after saving data) i.e. when linux
desktop is active.

(Did just that - ripped out the power cord and replaced and rebooted)

Now power on ur machine, kacpid will not appear.

(Problem solved?)

Happy Linuxing,

(Hope this helps someone who ignores this fix thinking it can't
work)

[15606.471610] usb 1-2: device not accepting address 6, error -110
==

also recently updated my BIOS to the latest version.

also get this message shortly after each bootup. Wonder if it's related:
==
[ 292.819263] irq 7: nobody cared (try booting with the irqpoll option)
==

I haven't used irqpoll but from what I've read it is used when a
system is really broken. However, I do use noapic as a boot option.

Just wondering why this bug still exists as I have seen reports back to
05? I'd like to see USB2.0 speeds again...

[Bug 129910] Re: Blank ttys when using vesafb (vga=xxx)

2008-02-05 Thread Buzz
This is a sort of update.

In my /etc/initramfs-tools/modules
fbcon
vesafb
nvidiafb

And in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-framebuffer
   # blacklist nvidiafb
   # blacklist vesafb

Now this is interesting. If my boot line DOES NOT include vga=XXX, I
get virtual terms which are very crisp clean, very small beautiful font,
probably 1440x900. However, my X is broke from this--I am using the
nvidia-glx driver (not nvidia-glx-new). Jean Levasseur mentioned the
incompatibility with the nvidiafb and nvidia-glx-new. Of course I can't
get the full 1440x900 natively in X with the nv driver.

To sum it up, using the above modules, I have a double-edged sword:
   * GUI is 1440x768 using nvidia-glx, and virtual terminals at 1024x768 when I
specify vga=0x318 as a boot option.
   * GUI is 1024x768 using nv, and virtual terminals are 1440x900 (I think),
when I don't specify vga=xxx as a boot option.

[Bug 129910] Re: Blank ttys when using vesafb (vga=xxx)

2008-01-28 Thread Buzz
I did not realize this was a bug. I always had my virtual consoles at
VGA quality, not realizing that higher resolutions were possible, until
I experimented with different distros. When I started messing with
vga=XXX I got the blank screens.

The process below, similar to others, gets 1024x768 in the virtual
consoles, though I get the native 1440x900 when running X.

edited /etc/initramfs-tools/modules to include:
  fbcon
  vesafb

commenting in blacklist file, /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-framebuffer as such:
# blacklist vesafb

followed by
sudo update-initramfs -u -k all -v

and then edit /boot/grub/menu.lst, using boot option:
vga=0x0318

For the boot option above, I chose the best vga mode from output of
hwinfo --framebuffer (had to apt-get), which was 1024x768.

I've nvidia Geforce 6150 Go, which gives 1440x900 in the GUI, so I will
try the nvidia fb modules next.
