Oh I forgot to mention, I had some issues getting past the build-tests,
so I used this switch:

$ DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS=nocheck dpkg-buildpackage -rfakeroot -b

[Bug 1892290] Re: PXE load Focal initrd.img-5.4.0-42-generic always timeout

2020-10-11 Thread cleary
hi @xinliang - thanks for raising this bug, and for the info.
I've got my way through to a grub build (I'm going to append some extra notes
to your instructions) but, I'm unclear about where the:

$ sudo apt install ./*.deb

is supposed to be applied - are you doing this on your pxe/tftp server?
Or does this need to be in the image that is being netbooted? (or both?)

If it's going on the pxe/tftp server, what files is it
providing/replacing to resolve the bug (ie is it updating a bootx64.efi
image)?

As promised - a little extra detail on the build notes:

$ git clone -b applied/ubuntu/focal-updates
https://git.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/grub2
$ cd grub2
$ git cherry-pick a6838bbc6726ad624bd2b94991f690b8e9d23c69 # this will throw an
error
$ git remote add upstream https://git.savannah.gnu.org/git/grub.git
$ git fetch upstream
$ git cherry-pick a6838bbc6726ad624bd2b94991f690b8e9d23c69
$ dpkg-buildpackage -rfakeroot -b

  I connect to the internet (navigating a bunch of painful kwallet

[Bug 1778632] [NEW] sddm hangs with mouse cursor on blank screen when pam_mount.conf.xml is malformed(?)

2018-06-25 Thread cleary
Public bug reported:

What you expected to happen:
sddm would display the theme, dialogs etc that would allow me to login

What actually happened:
sddm loads far enough to show the mouse cursor, but the background is still
black/blank/showing tty1 boot logs

It doesn't go any further, and I can't login with it.

A minimal series of steps necessary to make it happen:
1. install sddm
2. install libpam-mount
3. Add a minimal config to /etc/security/pam_mount.conf.xml, ala:
 https://paste.debian.net/1030743/
- note the "malformed" entry does not have an sgrp attribute defined (I'm
not convinced this actually constitutes a malformed entry)

4. run pam-auth-update and enable the entry "Mount volumes for user"
5. restart sddm

At this point sddm hangs with a blank screen, and mouse cursor. There
are no errors in logs, the only clue is that the PAM logging pauses

This doesn't affect any other DMs that I've tried (lightdm, gdm3)

Re: [Bug 1766746] Re: Cannot save customized configurations - can only copy defaults

2018-04-25 Thread Sean Cleary
Hi again - I didn't see your second message, about IRC conversation, until
just now. But this suggestion seems not to be the case. Here's my
experiment:
I modified a Gnome 2 panel and attempted to save it, but just copied the
Bionic "current configuration." Failure. Then I suspended the computer.
When I resumed, I saved the configuration, with Current Configuration
selected. This time it worked. Just as I was able to save a modified
Bionic config right after installation. I think it's significant that both
times, I was able to save modifications to whatever config the session
started with.
After this success, I applied Redmond, modified it, and tried to save it.
But what was saved was the modified Gnome 2. Which is the configuration
that was active when the session started.
I'm pretty sure that having Current Configuration selected saves the
configuration that's active when you log in, not the configuration you have
at the moment you save. I could be wrong, but I hope this helps.

This bug can be cancelled: the problem was with the iso or installation
medium. It did not recur when I redownloaded and reburnt the iso. I
apologize for the false alarm.

[Bug 1753893] [NEW] tandem raise/lower for half-screen snapped windows breaks normal workflows

2018-03-06 Thread cleary
Public bug reported:

This has been reported upstream, and fixed/reverted:

The revert commit:
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/commit/415584344a5d4b5

This is not currently in 18.04, I think it's important to include - can
I make a wishlist request? :D

[Bug 1696882] [NEW] python3-pykde4 depends on sip-py3api-11.2, which is not in the repositories

2017-06-08 Thread cleary
Public bug reported:

Hi, I was doing some clean room chroot building (xenial/16.04), and
python3-pykde4 started causing problems. I investigated on my host
(building) machine:

==
$ apt-cache depends python3-pykde4 | grep sip-py3api-11.2
  Depends:

$ apt-cache policy sip-py3api-11.2
sip-py3api-11.2:
  Installed: (none)
  Candidate: (none)
  Version table:
$
==

As a side note of weirdness, somehow python3-pykde4 it's still installed
on my host machine despite the sip-py3api-11.2 dep missing:

==
$ apt-cache policy python3-pykde4
python3-pykde4:
  Installed: 4:4.14.2-0ubuntu6
  Candidate: 4:4.14.2-0ubuntu6
  Version table:
 *** 4:4.14.2-0ubuntu6 500
500 http://aptmirror:3142/au.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu xenial/universe
amd64 Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

$ dpkg -l | grep sip-py
$
==

Naturally, I can't get it to install at all in my chroot -

2015-06-22 Thread cleary
Hi, sorry I've been off getting married :P

It's mentioned further back in the thread:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/qt4-x11/+bug/1359486/comments/15

https://launchpad.net/~bernard-gray/+archive/ubuntu/1359486

Packages for Trusty LTS only I'm afraid. The binary + source package is
so large it can only fit one build in the ppa now

I reported this against the Libreoffice PPA packages, but it's now
affecting the main packages in ubuntu:

I'm currently in the process of preparing some workaround packages for

For me, it only minimised the problem, it did not solve it completely

Tested and confirmed that workaround fixes the bug

This also seems to work around the issue where opening new libreoffice
program windows would open in the background/minimised.

I've created a ppa with the patched package - right at this moment, the
package has built successfully, but the binaries are pending
publication. By the time you read this I hope it will be ready to go:

[Bug 1359486] Re: [PPA] "Use LibreOffice Dialogs" setting is ignored in KDE

2014-09-24 Thread cleary
I've done a rebuild of qt4-x11 source on ubuntu 14.04 and I can confirm that
the patches at:
https://bugreports.qt-project.org/browse/QTBUG-34614
and
https://bugreports.qt-project.org/browse/QTBUG-38585

do resolve this bug.

According to the comment at the bottom of each of these reports:
https://bugreports.qt-project.org/browse/QTBUG-34614?focusedCommentId=247683&page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:comment-tabpanel#comment-247683

It requires going through https://codereview.qt-project.org/

Is there any extra work involved to make that happen? I would've thought
that any patches submitted to the bug tracker would be
(semi-)automatically considered for the code review

[Bug 1369424] [NEW] LibreOffice windows and dialogs do not receive focus on startup (KDE, Razorqt)

2014-09-15 Thread cleary
Public bug reported:

I hope I've got the correct package to log this against.

Symptom:
LibreOffice dialogs (such as password prompts, plaintext/csv imports etc) do
not receive WM focus if a LibreOffice app is running and minimised.
This causes a fairly severe usability issue, where it seems like LibreOffice
has crashed, since nothing seems to happen when you click (and continue to
click) to open a file that requires user action on a dialog.

I've replicated the issue in KDE and RazorQT which is why I'm logging it
against this qt-x11 package.

It affects 12.04 and 14.04 (tested, I imagine there are more)

The issue does not occur in Unity or Gnome.

I made two videos - based on:

Ubuntu 12.04, bog standard install. Add kde via:
  sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop

add this ppa:
https://launchpad.net/~libreoffice/+archive/ubuntu/libreoffice-4-3
upgrade all libreoffice packages to 4.3.0.4:
  sudo apt-get install $(dpkg -l | grep libreoffice | awk '{print $2}')

Video 1: Unity Desktop, expected (correct) behaviour
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BxhtBAYzjZj5V1V1NjRTRVRKZ0E/edit?usp=sharing

Video 2: Logged out of Unity, logged into KDE Desktop - unexpected behaviour,
as described by this bug:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BxhtBAYzjZj5ODZ2RG1GZHZtUEE/edit?usp=sharing

[Bug 1359486] [NEW] [PPA] "Use LibreOffice Dialogs" setting is ignored in KDE

2014-08-20 Thread cleary
Public bug reported:

Kubuntu 14.04 (KDE Desktop Environment)

Packages from this ppa:
https://launchpad.net/~libreoffice

Version: 4.3.0-3ubuntu2~trusty1 (as reported by dpkg, note updated packages as
of about 1 hour ago)
or 4.3.0.4 Build ID: 430m0(Build:4) as reported by LibreOffice about dialog.

LibreOffice uses it's native filepicker/save dialogs, regardless of
whether the config option "Use LibreOffice Dialogs" is ticked or not.

This is a regression from 4.2.4-0ubuntu2 currently in the main ubuntu
security repository.

Related Bugs:
https://bugreports.qt-project.org/browse/QTBUG-38585
https://bugreports.qt-project.org/browse/QTBUG-34614

According to the LO team, both these bugs have patches that address the
automatic disabling of Qt dialogs at runtime (if buggy Qt is detected.)

[Bug 1300515] Re: kded crashes when logging in with ldap in live environment

2014-04-01 Thread cleary
Hi Harald,
Thanks for the info - I thought I'd post it here since I can only replicate it
in a live environment, which uses the ubuntu specific casper initramfs.

Regarding the ~/.xsession-errors file, this exists in my profile but the
~/.cache/upstart/startkde.log does not. I've just tested on a recent
daily Kubuntu build (from last week) and it's the same situation. Is
this change only specific to ubuntu proper (ie running unity?)

I will post it on the KDE bugtracker shortly.

[Bug 1300515] [NEW] kded crashes when logging in with ldap in live environment

2014-03-31 Thread cleary
Public bug reported:

Summary:
When I use LDAP to authenticate/create home directories on a live environment
(casper initramfs), I get a kded crash every time I login, regardless of if the
profile has been created yet or not.
I can replicate this on the vanilla kubuntu live cd beta, I also build custom
livecds from the 14.04 repos, and am still experiencing the issues with current
packages (confirmed today)
The same LDAP/PAM config on a hard disk install does not exhibit the symptom

I've attempted to get some more diagnostic information with assistance from the
kde forums, but I'm not really coming up with anything useful at the moment:
https://forum.kde.org/viewtopic.php?f=67&t=120104&p=306273#p306273

I've attached the kcrash handler output for kded4

I also get a plasma-desktop crash on initial login, this does not occur
on subsequent logins. I expect it's related, I'll attach the kcrash
output for this as well.

kdelibs5-data 4:4.12.95-0ubuntu1
plasma-desktop 4:4.11.8-0ubuntu1

[Bug 984523] Re: apt_pkg.Cache() E: Read error - read (21: is a directory)

2014-03-16 Thread cleary
I've just replicated it on a random 12.04.4 server vm
My debootstrap command:
# debootstrap precise ./chroot

Then use the python commands as listed above, and the same error
appears.

I've attached the output of the find command you requested

I also took this command, grep'd on ^d to filter directories, and did a
diff against the same output on a trusty host with a trusty debootstrap.
They have the same directories.

This is the same python commands run on the trusty host/trusty chroot (ie, how
the precise output should look):
>>> import apt_pkg
>>> import apt
>>> apt_pkg.init_config()
>>> apt_pkg.config.set('RootDir', '/media/fll/chroot/')
>>> apt_pkg.config.set('APT::Architecture', 'amd64')
>>> apt_pkg.init_system()
>>> apt_pkg.Cache(apt.progress.base.OpProgress())

>>>

Output from precise 12.04.4 host with precise chroot:
>>> import apt_pkg
>>> import apt
>>> apt_pkg.init_config()
>>> apt_pkg.config.set('RootDir',
... '/root/chroot/')
>>> apt_pkg.config.set('APT::Architecture', 'amd64')
>>> apt_pkg.init_system()
>>> apt_pkg.Cache(apt.progress.base.OpProgress())

[Bug 1037662] Re: flashplugin-installer does not honor proxy settings

2014-01-20 Thread cleary
Hi Walter,
Thanks for the info, unfortunately it's still not available for trusty yet, but
the flashplugin-installer has been available pretty much since the repo came
online.

Therefore I'd argue that flashplugin-installer is in fact still required
since the partners aren't really holding up their end for the coming
releases.

Python: python3 3.2.3-5ubuntu1

When I attempt to call setDefault('printername') on my cups connection object,
I get a seg fault message:
"Segmentation fault (core dumped)"

I can do other operations on the object, such as getPrinters() and
getDefault().

I've attached an example program that demonstrates the functioning
object, and the segmentation fault - you;ll need to change the cups user
in __main__

** Affects: python-cups (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

** Attachment added: "example program that causes the seg fault"

[Bug 1151224] [NEW] ubiquity upstart: if ubiquity-dm fails to start for an unknown reason, init script exits with no error

2013-03-06 Thread cleary
Public bug reported:

I've been having some issues with ubiquity-dm only starting
intermittently on a custom livecd.

The problem as it turns out was that debconf was being locked by another init
script, and this would cause ubiquity-dm to not start.
However, the provided upstart script ubiquity.conf was still exiting
'normally', ie with a 0 return code, despite ubiquity-dm failing to start.

Debugging with set -x in /etc/init/ubiquity.conf script section:
...
+ [ -n  ]
+ ubiquity-dm vt7 :0 ubuntu /usr/bin/ubiquity --greeter --only
debconf: DbDriver "config": /var/cache/debconf/config.dat is locked by another
process: Resource temporarily unavailable
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "/usr/bin/ubiquity-dm", line 629, in
dm = DM(vt, display, username)
  File "/usr/bin/ubiquity-dm", line 129, in __init__
db = DebconfCommunicator('ubiquity', cloexec=True)
  File "/usr/lib/ubiquity/ubiquity/debconfcommunicator.py", line 37, in __init__
write=self.dccomm.stdin)
  File "/usr/lib/python3/dist-packages/debconf.py", line 50, in __init__
self.setUp(title)
  File "/usr/lib/python3/dist-packages/debconf.py", line 53, in setUp
self.version = self.version(2)
  File "/usr/lib/python3/dist-packages/debconf.py", line 62, in

  File "/usr/lib/python3/dist-packages/debconf.py", line 83, in command
status = int(status)
ValueError: invalid literal for int() with base 10: ''
+ [  ]
+ exit 0

Basically, there is an if statement that catches a couple of known
conditions for ubiquity-dm not starting, but there is no catch-all to
consider any other cases.

debian/ubiquity.ubiquity.upstart
...
if ! ubiquity-dm vt7 :0 ubuntu /usr/bin/ubiquity $debug $automatic
$choose $ldtp --only $frontend; then
# has X crashed, or has ubiquity?
if [ "$automatic" ] && ! [ -f /var/log/installer/version ]; then
# in case we crashed before the X startup sequence
plymouth quit || :
exec ubiquity noninteractive $debug
fi
fi

I've attached a patch which simply inserts an 'else' catch-all.

[Bug 499257] Re: saves svg file, that it can't read afterwards

2012-08-15 Thread Brian Cleary
Added a bug that duplicates this, so here is what I said there. I think
it's worth keeping the issue alive this way because I can't imagine most
users will open the SVG file in a text editor to fix the file after each
save.

--

Reproduction:
1. Open SVG file created using AI SVG export plugin.
2. Change document size in File > Document Properties (e.g. +1px to width) and
save.
File is now broken because a non-UTF-8 character has been included in an
xpacket tag.

Ver: Inkscape 0.48.2 r9819 in XQuartz 2.7.2 (xorg-server 1.12.2) on
MacOS 10.8

Does not appear to affect SVG files created in Inkscape.

[Bug 578109] Re: plymouth copying progress counter for copy_live_to()

2012-05-17 Thread cleary
Can you guys give me some pointers on what I've done wrong with this report
that after 2 years, it's
a) not added into the casper codebase
b) not even assigned to anyone

I am deploying ubuntu images to +100 desktops at work, I am working in
casper regularly. I have 3 open reports on casper from as far back as
Jan 2010 - This is a serious question:

What do I need to do better/differently to get these reports looked at,
and dealt with definitively (either applied or rejected) rather than
having them sit in limbo for years?

I get an error trying to grab a Cache object from a vanilla chroot.

/home/bgray/amd64.vanilla_debootstrap//var/lib/dpkg/status exists, is
readable and seems correctly formatted.

Due to both python-apt and python3-apt exhibiting the same issue, I'd
anticipate it's an incompatibility with apt.

I've just about reached the end of my troubleshooting abilities though,
but if there's anything else you want me to try, please ask.

missing, not README.diskdefines as I previously thought:

[Bug 909919] [NEW] scripts/casper-bottom/41apt_cdrom is missing some sanity checking, can cause hang on boot

2011-12-29 Thread cleary
Public bug reported:

Distribution Release: 12.04 Precise
Casper: 1.296

in scripts/casper-bottom/41apt_cdrom, if an apt repository is not configured in
the root of the LiveCD, the script hangs the boot process waiting for input
with the message:
"Please provide a name for this Disc, such as 'Debian 5.0.3 Disk 1"

Some sort of checking is needed here to see if the conditions required for the
apt-cdrom repository are fulfilled, and to fail silently if they are not - I've
attached a possible patch:
 * if /README.diskdefines does not exist in the root of the CDROM, exit with no
error

 having said that I'm not certain of the role of the README.diskdefines
file, so it may not be the best choice for checking.

[Bug 497877] Re: Support Application Indicators

2011-10-13 Thread Sean Cleary
My printer does not work anymore and I have
No System Tray Detected On This System.
And someone asked for details, so here is the dump:

sean@gamer ~ $ hp-check -t

HP Linux Imaging and Printing System (ver. 3.11.3a)

Dependency/Version Check Utility ver. 14.3

Copyright (c) 2001-9 Hewlett-Packard Development Company, LP

This software comes with ABSOLUTELY NO WARRANTY.

This is free software, and you are welcome to distribute it

under certain conditions. See COPYING file for more details.

Note: hp-check can be run in three modes:

1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before
compiling the

HPLIP supplied tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the proper
dependencies

are installed to successfully compile HPLIP.

2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a
distro

supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied
tarball

has the proper dependencies installed to successfully run.

3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This
mode

will check both of the above cases (both compile- and run-time
dependencies).

Saving output in log file: hp-check.log

Initializing. Please wait...
