[Bug 332646] Re: sftp does not set timestamps

2017-07-22 Thread david6
Related, and possible NOT worth raising as its own bug.

Renaming a zero-length (semaphore) file in Nautilus does NOT change its
time/date stamp.

Tested/verified today with fully updated Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, and
'Nautilus' ('Files' v3.14.3).

[Bug 1333140] Re: Fix udev rules to consider mmc rpmb partitions

2016-12-28 Thread david6
Verified still present, for 16.10 ..

New install of 16.10 on 'HP Stream 11 Pro G2'. No issue with install,
other than slight delay at startup/re-start(s). Exhibits 15-20 second
delay (with screen purple) at EVERY power on/startup.

No change, from issue for 16.04 LTS.

[Bug 1333140] Re: Fix udev rules to consider mmc rpmb partitions

2016-12-28 Thread david6
This issue is still present on 16.04.1 LTS, and is not resolved by being
fully updated.

It is also present for 16.10 ..

While use of eMMC is not widespread, this UNRESOLVED issue causes (at
very least) a 15-20 second delay on startup.

2016-08-26 Thread david6
This is NOT a duplicate of: Bug #1292041 (since closed)

This relates to screen not blanking (and screen turning off) after a
mouse or keyboard event, when in screen-locked state.

This is annoying and is still present in latest, fully patched, Ubuntu
16.04.1 LTS.

[Bug 1447282] Re: Does not use encrypted swap when using GPT partitioning + encrypted home directory (ecryptfs)

2016-04-22 Thread david6
Re-tested today/yesterday with 16.04 LTS (official release), with
existing partitions deleted.

HP Stream 11 Pro G2 notebook (Braswell SoC, Celeron N3050), with 64GB
eMMC (SSD) storage.

Issue still occurs, with prompt (black box) on startup. No pauses (for
at command line) doing update/upgrade, but also no updates
available (at present).

Corrected (per Comment #75, #76), with:

$ cat /etc/fstab
--
# swap was on /dev/mmcblk0p3 during installation
--

$ sudo sfdisk --part-attrs /dev/mmcblk0 3 "63"

(after reboot)
$ swapon -s

2016-04-12 Thread david6
Re-tested today/yesterday with 16.04 LTS (xenial-desktop-amd64, daily-
build, 11-Apr), with existing partitions deleted, or SSD secure erased.

(a.) HP ProDesk 600 G2 SFF (Skylake, Core i5), with 256GB SSD (SATA 3
interface) storage.

No issue occurred.

(b.) HP Stream 11 Pro G2 notebook (Braswell SoC, Celeron N3050), with
64GB eMMC (SSD) storage.

Issue still occurs, with prompt (black box) on startup. Also has
multiple pauses (for at command line) doing update/upgrade.

This could still be specific to 'NVMe' and 'eMMC' SSD media (which use
the simple /sda /sdb /sdc for path), as this appear to be a common
feature.

[Bug 1447282] Re: Does not use encrypted swap when using GPT partitioning + encrypted home directory (ecryptfs)

2016-04-07 Thread david6
Re-tested today with 16.04 LTS (xenial-desktop-amd64, daily-build,
07-Apr), and still occurring.

I have an HP Stream 11 Pro G2 notebook with 64GB eMMC (SSD) storage, and
existing partitions were deleted.

Minor issue: Notebook stalled with 'sda' (USB used for install) cache
/pass-thru error, after it prompted that install was complete. This
error may have previously occurred (earlier attempts, and during
install/load), but did not stop for me to read wording.

This did NOT pause (for at command line) doing update/upgrade.
However, only a limited number of updates were available.

--

I think this specifically relates to 'NVMe' and 'eMMC' SSD media, as
this appear to be common feature for those reporting recent issues.

2016-03-30 Thread david6
Sorry, been busy with work.

Re-tested today, with 16.04 LTS beta2, and still occurring. Also
repeatedly stop for at command line, doing update/upgrade.

I have an HP notebook with 64GB eMMC (SSD) storage, and existing
partitions were already deleted.

[Bug 1333140] Re: Fix udev rules to consider mmc rpmb partitions

2015-06-04 Thread david6
I have done repeated installs of 14.04 LTS and 15.04 on an HP Stream 11
notebooks.

This issue generally does NOT occur, other than briefly during initial
load of Ubuntu installer (and sometimes during early stages of install).
This adds no more than 15% to the time it takes to install Ubuntu (with
eMMC storage), and will usually take less than 30 minutes.

However, I realised recently that this was ONLY true for new machines,
or those I had already installed Ubuntu on. Out of the box, I was
interrupting initial startup (at screen backlight on) to go directly to
(BIOS controls for) booting from USB device.

For machines that had were already running Windows 8.1 (or even just
asking for region / user details), it will no longer cleanly install
Ubuntu. I have had it take from 2 hours to 5-7 hours, or just stall
(after about 40 minutes) with continuous errors. This appears to be
spurious interrupts (which cause further errors) due to attempts to
access the RPMB partition. I am NOT even convinced that the Ubuntu
installer is causing these interrupts.

The other possible 'root cause' is that the problem machines (NEW or
used) were older, the same model Notebook but with an earlier generation
/ step release of eMMC chips. I don't have a large enough pool to prove
this, but someone may be able to shed light.

[Bug 1418706] Re: Vivid: UEFI: blank drive incorrectly detected as existing BIOS-mode install

2015-04-24 Thread david6
This occurred again today.

Aborted from 14.10 (fully updated) after 'prompt to upgrade to vivid',
which looked like it would take forever.

Restarted Notebook, to install 15.04 using USB of 'Ubuntu 15.04 Desktop
(64-bit)' (release).

When prompted with 'non-UEFI' mode warning, I choose 'back' and removed
ALL existing partitions, then powered off.

Then re-ran, with NO repeat of issue.

[Bug 1418706] Re: Vivid: UEFI: blank drive incorrectly detected as existing BIOS-mode install

2015-04-21 Thread david6
Summary:

Install appears to complete, and prompts for reboot; (identical
behaviour as 14.10 install)

- reboot pauses, device still power-on but screen blank (no backlight); (often
occurs with 14.10 install, on HP Stream 11)
- then prompts to remove any install media, and press Enter ..
- However, screen is unstable with three 'Ubuntu' images overlayed, and other
screen corruption / tearing / flicker ..
- force power off, wait 5, power on. (boots normally)

However. still prompts with:
Please enter passphrase for disk cryptswap1 on none! (seen earlier)
Pressing Enter gets through to normal login ..

[Bug 1418706] Re: Vivid: UEFI: blank drive incorrectly detected as existing BIOS-mode install

2015-04-17 Thread david6
Attempting to install Vivid (15.04) Daily Build, on HP Stream 11 (Bay
Trail notebook, with 32GB eMMC storage). Device already has 14.10 64-bit
present (standard auto-install: EFI, system, swap), and Secure-Boot mode
is enabled.

http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/daily-live/pending/
  vivid-desktop-amd64.iso 17-Apr-2015 08:38

- Installed using 4GB USB drive, with UEFI-only image; (.ISO file 'restored' to
USB drive, no SysLinux or MBR)
- Installer incorrectly prompts with warning that the install target contains
an existing BIOS-mode install, and that Legacy-mode is enabled; (prompts with
option to continue in 'UEFI' mode)
- install appears to complete, and prompts for reboot; (identical behaviour as
14.10 install)
- reboot stops, device still power-on but screen blank (no backlight); (often
occurs with 14.10 install, on HP Stream 11)
- force off, wait 5, power on. (boots normally)

However. now prompts with:
Please enter passphrase for disk cryptswap1 on none! (new behaviour !?)

Pressing Enter Enter gets through to normal login ..

CONCLUSION:

-  primary issue may now be 'fixed';
- the 'force-UEFI' dialog/prompt is still an issue; (separate bug?)
- prompt for passphrase is well .. ODD.

@Paulo

This may relate to @Thomas stating Installed in UEFI Mode, Secure boot
off.

I've seen a number of sites trying to install on various ultra-books and
tablets all say must disable secure boot. As this is a component of
proper use of UEFI (which should work), I have left it enabled.

[Bug 1418706] Re: Vivid: UEFI: blank drive incorrectly detected as existing BIOS-mode install

2015-04-12 Thread david6
Attempting to install Vivid (15.04) Daily Build, on HP Stream 11 (Bay
Trail notebook, with eMMC storage):

- Installed using USB drive, with UEFI-only image; (.ISO file 'restored' to USB
drive, no SysLinux or MBR)
- Installer incorrectly concludes that the drive contains an existing
BIOS-mode install, and that Legacy-mode is enabled; (prompts to 'Force UEFI'
mode)
- install appears to complete, but will NOT boot. (Even on restart, not
recognised as (UEFI) bootable)

I have verified that (a.) the drive is NOT blank, and had contained
14.10 64-bit; and (b.) Secure-Boot mode is enabled (and Legacy
disabled).

CONCLUSION:

This is more like the logic being REVERSED, than the original
description of the issue (in 'Bug Description').

[Bug 1418706] Re: Vivid: UEFI: blank drive incorrectly detected as existing BIOS-mode install

2015-04-11 Thread david6
For latest Vivid (daily build), it also suggests I have 'Secure Boot'
disabled, and it needs to force 'UEFI mode'.

This is part of the same issue, and also results in NO Grub being
installed (so wont boot). Live works fine.

[Bug 1333140] Re: Fix udev rules to consider mmc rpmb partitions

2015-04-08 Thread david6
A fix is great, however ..

I am unable to install Ubuntu 14.04 LTS on the HP Stream 11, due to this
bug. The fix/update would fix this, but I would need to add it to the
install image.

I can install Ubuntu 14.10 on the HP Stream 11, but it is slow to boot
(due to this bug). This update is not yet released for Utopic (14.10),
and may not soon either given the current focus on release of 15.04 ..

Considering raising new BUG (for Utopic, Velvet).

[Bug 288762] Re: totem: can't skip chapters in matroska files

2015-03-14 Thread david6
This issue is still present in Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, fully updated.

An .mkv file with OR without chapters is treated the same by Totem. Most
of my files played on VLC (or other player) have chpater information and
you can navigate to next/previous chapter.

What is the root cause?

Why did this fix (xine-lib v1.1.17, per comment #11) never reach/affect
Trusty (14.04)?

[Bug 1189721] Re: Ralink RT3290 doesn't have a bluetooth driver

2015-03-13 Thread david6
Dan,

The suggested fix in Comment 129 (Adnan's answer, on AskUbuntu) does
work for Ubuntu 14.10; but requires his suggested changes to two source
files (before compiling). It did NOT require step 7, or any additional
files/binary code.

  HP 250 G3 (15.6, Celeron), Ubuntu 14.10 (64-bit), Ralink RT3290.

What drivers did you try?

[Bug 1314367] Re: Flickering with Ubuntu 14.04 and nvidia card reappeared

2015-01-22 Thread david6
Compiz works for me: (Force full screen redraws (buffer swap) on repaint [x])
Ubuntu 14.04 fully updated
Quadro K420/PCIe/SSE2

Needed to switch from Nouveau (to edgers Nvidia 340.58) to resolved
DisplayPort not handling screen saver / blanking, and poor performance
(or X server crash) with DVI (Dual Link).

I have just upgraded to a Samsung 27 with 2560 x 1440 resolution. The
K420 video card was also required, as earlier cards (NSA 310, NVS 315)
could not keep up with higher resolution. Tearing and remnants on full
screen video or larger scaling of some applications.

[Bug 1313539] Re: monitor shows black screen and no input signal after turning the monitor off and on manually

2015-01-12 Thread david6
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1308105 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1308105

This issue is possibly specific to DisplayPort, and not just a duplicate
of bug #1308105.

I have just upgraded my monitor, and due to higher screen resolution,
was forced to change from DVI (and a KVM) to DisplayPort.

The monitor will NOT sleep, and attempting to workaround by power-off/on
(when unneeded) hits THIS bug. Setting the monitor to sleep (eg.
powersave timer) also triggers THIS bug. The ONLY fix being to power
cycle the PC.

However, the most common workaround I have found generally says: Don't
use DisplayPort, use DVI Dual-Link.

ALSO, if bug 1308105 is the cause, where is the fix? When will it
arrive?

This appears to be a xfce4 regression bug, and specific to DisplayPort
..

[Bug 1292041] Re: Lockscreen doesn't turn off the screen

2015-01-10 Thread david6
I am running Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (64-bit), fully updated. Unity version is:
7.2.3+14.04.20140826-0ubuntu1

I just changed monitors, and also from DVI to DisplayPort (due to higher
resolution).

The screen does not 'turn off', after screen locked (or timeout). Screen
is black (with white mouse cursor), but still fully backlit. This does
not change after many hours.

This may not be the SAME bug (as original post), but has identical
symptoms.

NEW BUG ?

Any advice / suggestions ?

[Bug 332646] Re: sftp does not set timestamps

2013-06-22 Thread david6
This was partially fixed in Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (desktop).

Puch / Puill:

If you copy from a remote Ubuntu platform, then the timestamp is
preserved. But if you copy too, then only some platforms honour the
timestamp (otherwise it is set to 'now' by the receiving platform).

Tested today with full patched Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS desktop, server, and
Ubuntu 13.04 desktop (all 64-bit):

 - Copying from 13.04 desktop to 12.04 desktop ( Ok )
 - Copying from 13.04 desktop to 12.04 server ( timestamp replaced,
with 'now' )

 - Copying from 12.04 desktop to 13.04 desktop ( Ok )
 - Copying from 12.04 desktop to 12.04 server ( Ok, but new directories
have timestamp of 'now' )

This should be fixed, and be consistent. Either as default behaviour, or from
SFTP config. file.

[Bug 176844] Re: ntpdate fails to get a server from /etc/ntp.conf

2013-01-01 Thread david6
I may yet open a new bug, but in the meantime some comments ..

ntpdate fails to get a server from /etc/ntp.conf

YES.

In my testing (Ubuntu 12.10, server, 64bit), ntpdate does NOT use the
NTP servers listed in /etc/ntp.conf. Therefore, not honouring the
setting: NTPDATE_USE_NTP_CONF=yes in file: /etc/default/ntpdate

However, NTP and NTPDATE don't play well, and really only NTP needs to
work once the system is running (and 'nearly' synced). You also need to
stop/start NTP, before/after attempting to use NTPDATE:

ntpq -np
ntpq -c rl

sudo service ntp stop
ntpdate -q 1.au.pool.ntp.org
sudo service ntp start

ntpq -np
ntpq -c rl

And (surprise) NTPDATE uses a completely different file (/etc/ntp/step-tickers)
to list time servers, to get the initial reasonable time sync, to allow NTP to
then keep in sync.

Note: Ubuntu (even 12.10) does not have this file, or even the directory
(/etc/ntp/), but does appear to use it (if created).

[Bug 254375] Re: SIGSEGV in ntpq

2011-11-14 Thread david6
I still get this error on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (latest updates), under 'cold

For example: (new host), install ntp (sudo apt-get install ntp)

~$ ntpq -c rl (on a different host)

sometime after install, BUT before it is properly synced, I may get:

~$ ntpq -c rl

later still, when properly synced, it returns valid data:

~$ ntpq -c rl
assID=0 status=0664 leap_none, sync_ntp, 6 events, event_peer/strat_chg,
version=ntpd 4.2.4p8@1.1612-o Tue Apr 19 07:08:29 UTC 2011 (1),

[Bug 254375] Re: SIGSEGV in ntpq

2011-11-14 Thread david6
I still get this error on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (latest updates), under 'cold
start' conditions.

For example: (new host), install ntp (sudo apt-get install ntp)

~$ ntpq -c rl (on a different host)
associd=0 status=c011 leap_alarm, sync_unspec, 1 event, freq_not_set,
version=ntpd 4.2.6p2@1.2194 Fri Sep  2 18:37:15 UTC 2011 (1),

mintc=3, offset=0.000, frequency=0.000, sys_jitter=0.000,
clk_jitter=0.001, clk_wander=0.000

sometime after install, BUT before it is properly synced, I may get:

~$ ntpq -c rl
assID=0 status=c644 sync_alarm, sync_ntp, 4 events, event_peer/strat_chg,
version=ntpd 4.2.4p8@1.1612-o Tue Apr 19 07:08:29 UTC 2011 (1),
processor=i686, system=Linux/2.6.32-34-generic, leap=11, stratum=16,
Segmentation fault

later still, when properly synced, it returns valid data:

~$ ntpq -c rl
assID=0 status=0664 leap_none, sync_ntp, 6 events, event_peer/strat_chg,
version=ntpd 4.2.4p8@1.1612-o Tue Apr 19 07:08:29 UTC 2011 (1),

This must relate to string-space, a negative value (unexpected), or similar for
nonsense data.

Does not ALWAYS occur, and HARD to reproduce ..

2011-10-28 Thread david6
I am dealing with an issue (Bug #882893 ) that may be related.

In general the PC (with Intel 82865G) is running OK, with Ubuntu 11.10 +

Only problem: GPU (or CPU) crashes at 'screen OFF', on screensaver timeout.

[Bug 882893] Re: gnome-screensaver 3.2.0-0ubuntu1 failed to exit

2011-10-28 Thread david6
This could be an issue with the Intel 82865G integrated graphics driver.

I have tried the older Intel 2.4 Driver.

RevertingIntelDriverTo2.4
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReinhardTartler/X/RevertingIntelDriverTo2.4

( Does NOT work, missing details and valid PPA sources .. )

Instead I used:

Downgraded versions of X.org drivers, libraries, etc. for Ubuntu.
https://edge.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat/+archive/x-retro

Click on: 'View package details'

Click on: 'xserver-xorg-video-intel-2.4 - 2:2.4.1-1ubuntu11~ppa1' (near
bottom)

Download:
https://edge.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat/+archive/x-retro/+files/xserver-xorg-video-intel-2.4_2.4.1-1ubuntu11%7Eppa1_i386.deb

Then installed using:

   Ctrl-Alt-F1, for text login

cd Downloads/ (location of .deb file)

  sudo dpkg -i xserver-xorg-video-intel-2.4_2.4.1-1ubuntu11~ppa1_i386.deb
  (enter password)

  sudo apt-get -f install

(re-start PC)

THIS DID NOT APPEAR TO FIX PROBLEM.

[Bug 882893] [NEW] gnome-screensaver 3.2.0-0ubuntu1 failed to exit

2011-10-27 Thread david6
Public bug reported:

On older PC (Intel P4 2.8GHz, 1GB RAM), I am seeing this lockup with
default settings.

Ubuntu 11.10, Unity-2D, latest patch/updates loaded.

Occurs when I wait for timeout, and screen blanks. Does NOT occur when
select screen-lock (from GUI, or keyboard)

I have now two separate PCs, with identical results.

Note: login screen (lightdm) is not susceptible to this issue.

This can be defeated once, by pressing 'shift' key to wakeup.

This works once (after boot time), and does NOT work a second time

When PC is in lockout state, only power-off is possible. I have loaded

[Bug 574673] Re: Startup Disk Creator failing to create bootable USB with Ubuntu 10.04

2011-10-25 Thread david6
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 458482 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/458482

This is NOT duplicate of Bug #458482

This is a regression issue, introduced at/around: Ubuntu 10.10

This is a Syslinux issue, not a boot issue (per se).

It is not always possible to boot and install Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (desktop OR
server), when the USB media has been created on Ubuntu 10.10 (or later) using
Startup Disk Creator.

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MaverickMeerkat/ReleaseNotes#Common%20Desktop%20Applications
.. It is not possible to create Ubuntu 10.04 USB disks from the Startup Disk
Creator in Ubuntu 10.10 due to a backwards incompatibility in the syslinux
program.

NOTE: I am able to re-produced this issue, in the last 2 days, for
Ubuntu 11.10 + Unity, with latest patch/updates.

WORKAROUND: (works for Ubuntu 10.04 LTS server desktop)
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-mint-84/trying-to-boot-linux-mint-9-from-usb-flash-drive-vesamenu-c32-not-a-com32r-image-829397/#post4120867

Attempt to boot, either auto OR selecting USB from boot menu

When this SYSLINUX error message appears:
eg.
  vesamenu.c32: Not a COM32R image
  boot:

Type help Enter, then press Enter again.

( after several seconds, GUI demo/install menu appears )

Has there been any attempt to fix this?

[Bug 738462] Re: Nautilus not preserving timestamps (Lucid)

2011-03-21 Thread david6
per #2
  * Is this reproducible?
YES

  * If so, what specific steps should we take to recreate this bug
This affects ANY attempt to transfer files (using Nautilus 2.30.1) between two
hosts with Ubuntu 10.04 LTS on both, or from 10.04 LTS to 10.10

I have noted this on a number of occasions, on different hardware at
multiples locations. I have worked around this, using backup tools or
other methods.

(as noted): This does NOT occur when using Ubuntu 10.10 to transfer from
!0.04 LTS .

[Bug 738462] Re: Nautilus not preserving timestamps (Lucid)

2011-03-21 Thread david6
per #3
 is that a local issue?
This appears to be general for 10.04 LTS

is the issue solved in recent versions?
NO, not yet resolved by latest updates to 10.04 LTS

(YES, solved in Ubuntu 10.10 or later, which now use Nautilus 2.23.0 )

[Bug 738462] Re: Nautilus not preserving timestamps (Lucid)

2011-03-21 Thread david6
using what protocol? did you mount those using nautilus?

mounted with Nautilus, using SSH protocol

My longterm workaround has been to use (VanDyke) SecureFX, either under
Linux/Wine or Windows (on another/third host).

Recently started using SecureCRT (Linux) in beta, which does not yet
have companion: SecureFX (Linux).

[Bug 738462] [NEW] Nautilus not preserving timestamps (Lucid)

2011-03-19 Thread david6
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 10.04.2 (Lucid), with latest updates, still uses Nautilus 2.30.1
..

If attempt to copy files using Nautilus, to another host, the date/time
of files are NOT preserved.

This occurred when attempting transferring of user files to a NEW PC
(with fresh install of Ubuntu 10.10, w/ Nautilus 2.23.0).

Workaround: Use new PC (with Ubuntu 10.10 Nautilus 2.32.0) instead, which
DOES preserve date/times.

NOTE: This should be fixed for currently supported LTS release (10.04).

** Affects: glib2.0 (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

IMHO, Bug #215499 was not properly resolved.

IMHO, Bug #319063 should have addressed this, OR been changed to next
LTS release (from Intrepid).
