[Bug 1278655] [NEW] GTK Greeter does not tile background images.

It would be nice if lightdm-gtk-greeter would support tiling as does the
Unity greeter does now. Could I get someone interested in implementing
this?

[Bug 752542] Re: ACPI DSDT info

Here's a report generated on a Lenovo Thinkpad T420. Bumblebee

[Bug 1199474] [NEW] rabbitmq fails to start unless /etc/hosts is set a specific way

2013-07-09 Thread frotz
Public bug reported:

As described in
http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.comp.networking.rabbitmq.general/18293,
rabbitmq fails to start if /etc/hosts does not contain a line causing
the hostname to resolve to 127.0.0.1. In other words, /etc/hosts needs
to have a line like this if the host in question is named dopey.

127.0.0.1 localhost dopey

Doing this to /etc/hosts is not necessarily a desirable thing

[Bug 903422] Re: Ubuntu does not work with Samsung Galaxy phones ( Unable to open raw device 0)

2013-01-08 Thread frotz
I'm using a Galaxy Tab2 7.0 and have had similar problems. I cannot
access the device at all using any of the known mtp tools (mtpfs, go-
mtpfs, or jmptfs). I supposed that maybe upgrading to libmtp-1.1.5 will
help.

I downloaded the libmtp-1.1.5 tarball, dropped in the debian/ directory
from the previous version's deb src, changed debian/changelog and built
a new deb containing the various packages for version 1.1.5.

mtp-detect succeeds. go-mtpfs and jmptfs work. Sometimes fusermount
-u foobar will fail because the system thinks I'm still doing something
in foobar. Regular mtpfs works unacceptably. It seems that it does a
union mount of the internal sdcard on top of the external sdcard and
sets all the permissions to 777.

I hope this helps.

[Bug 504440] Re: sd card safely remove drive kills reader device

2011-01-04 Thread frotz
The fact that it's still possible to disable an internal USB device such
that a reboot or opening up the case is required screams very loudly
that this issue is NOT settled in the slightest. This should NOT be
labeled WON'T FIX. I've seen references to forcing the operating
system to rescan all USB devices to, in effect, unplug and replug idled
devices. Does anyone remember what was involved in this? I could have
sworn I replied to a thread discussing this, but all the fiddling with
Google and the local search engine turns up nothing.

[Bug 421261] Re: xterm background colour used to be black, now white

Debian sets the background color by a modification to
 /etc/X11/app-defaults/XTerm, combined with
the /etc/X11/Xresources/x11-common file. That's been discussed, pointed
 out where to look

Looking at the links associated with this bug, I don't see anything
about a resource setting that forces xterm to use XTerm-color as if it
was specified on the command line.

control applet was deinstalled while updating and now
there is nothing of similar functionality installed.

I'm an experienced user and I found this annoying as well. Applets
shouldn't disappear like that. The idea of a do-everything applet is a
bad idea. What happened to the philosophy of do one thing, but do it
well? Now I have to dink around with Preferences-Startup_Applications
instead of simply adding it to the panel.

[Bug 526796] Re: No sound applet on the gnome panel

2010-05-05 Thread frotz
I don't see why there would be a need for this indicator applet.
Isn't there already a Notification Area for things like that? What if
I want to put the volume control somewhere completely different from the
other stuff that this indicator applet puts them? Maybe I just want the
volume control and nothing else. This new indicator applet doesn't
allow for that. Why can't stuff like this be done as an add-on instead
of yanking the rug out from under people who like things the way they
are?

[Bug 309314] Re: Documents silently fail to print

2008-12-18 Thread frotz
I have two machine which are running Intrepid. One has 1.3.9-2ubuntu4,
the other 1.3.9-2ubuntu5. My printer is a Brother DL-5250 DN which is
accessed over the local network. I discovered this printing problem
when printing out postage for my Ebay sales. For instance, I click on
View Paypal Transaction and then Print Packing Slip. This causes
the status light to blink yellow, as expected. But instead of churning
its innards and ejecting a printed page, the blinking turns back to a
steady green. Printing from gedit, xpdf, evice, lpr, and Openoffice all
fail the same way. Directly printing from Firefox, as in selecting
File-Print works correctly as does printing a test page from system-
config-printer. When printing does work, the yellow blinking takes an
inordinately long time before the printer actually sucks up a sheet and
prints on it.

This problem can be worked around by typing sudo dpkg -i

the previous version. After this, go into aptitude and mark cups to be
held at its current (downgraded) version.

This might be another bug. Pressing = when highlighting a package in

[Bug 225051] [NEW] monodevelop forgets the last widgets created

2008-04-30 Thread frotz
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: monodevelop

Create a new user, then log in as that user on the console. Start
Monodevelop. Create a new solution. Press the new file button and
create some new widgets. For each widget, type something in the source
code file and add a container to the design part. Press the save
button and exit Monodevelop. When Monodevelop is restarted, one or more
of the last widgets to be added will be forgotten. You still are able
to see the source code in the middle of the screen, but the file has
disappeared from the Resources area.

[Bug 205815] Re: Monodevelop in hardy doesn't install gmcs

2008-04-23 Thread frotz
Somewhere between Gutsy and Hardy, the mono and monodevelop stuff got
mixed around and messed up. Here are the packages that I installed on
Hardy to get things going:

monodevelop
mono-gac
mono-utils
mono-gmcs
mono-xbuild
mono-mcs
mono-1.0-devel
mono-2.0-devel
mono-1.0-service
mono-2.0-service
mono-debugger
mono-tools-gui

Ideally, doing apt-get install monodevelop should install all of these
things. In Gutsy, it was smarter about this in that Monodevelop just
needed a couple extras that weren't installed by default. Now the
Monodevelop package doesn't install crucial things like mono-mcs.
Packagers, please fix this!

[Bug 200081] [NEW] loadkeys mangles key redefinitions

2008-03-09 Thread frotz
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: console-tools

This problem affects console-tools 0.2.3 installed from apt on Ubuntu
8.04 (Hardy Heron) Alpha 6.

I want to redefine the console caps-lock to control, so I follow this[1]
tried-and-true procedure:

Here's the keymapping before the change:
  $ dumpkeys |grep -i keycode  58
  keycode 58 = Caps_Lock

Here's the command to change the caps-lock key to control:
  $ echo keycode 58 = Control |loadkeys -

Now, here it is afterwards
  $ dumpkeys |grep -i keycode  58
  keycode 58 = Control Caps_LockCaps_LockCaps_Lock
Caps_LockCaps_LockCaps_LockCaps_Lock
Caps_LockCaps_LockCaps_LockCaps_Lock
Caps_LockCaps_LockCaps_LockCaps_Lock

With keycode 58 set like this, the new control key behaves erratically.
At first it behaves like a control key, then it sometimes toggles caps-
lock, then sometimes emits random control characters, usually ^S and ^D.

[Bug 173742] high speed usb doesn't work with Gutsy

2007-12-03 Thread frotz
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.22

When plugging in a USB 2.0 hard drive to a stock Gutsy machine, I get
the following in dmesg:

[ 131.646942] usb 2-3: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 5
[ 131.758810] usb 2-3: device descriptor read/64, error -71

[ 133.660542] usb 2-3: device not accepting address 8, error -71

The drive does not appear to be recognized, nor does
/dev/bus/usb/devices say anything about it. If I do modprobe -r
ehci_hcd, the drive is recognized as a USB 1.1 device. Not
surprisingly, the throughput is a horrid 1 megabyte per second or worse.
This problem seems to crop up a lot and then the bug report is closed
when the problem mysteriously vanishes. For example

[Bug 163509] bind9 is not ready to run

2007-11-18 Thread frotz
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: bind9

I previously was running bind9 on a Feisty box which was upgraded
through apt to Gutsy. I decided today to wipe that machine and do a
fresh install of Gutsy. I dropped in my old /etc/bind directory,
installed bind9 and attempted to start up bind with /etc/init.d/bind9
start. Bind refused to start and I immediately got this complaint in
/var/log/messages:

Nov 18 00:24:29 zaphod kernel: [ 110.744892] Failure registering
capabilities with primary security module.

After flailing around with google and finding absolutely nothing
relevant to my problem, I stumbled across this:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gbindadmin/+bug/162821

I curiously installed gbindadmin and played around with it, telling it
to use /etc/bind instead of /var/named. It created /var /dev and /etc
in /etc/bind and lo, bind9 now starts up and works. Why isn't this done
by the bind9 package already?

[Bug 137640] calligra font missing from texlive-fonts-extra

2007-09-05 Thread frotz
Public bug reported:

In aptitude(8), when viewing the texlive-fonts-extra package, calligra
is listed as one of the fonts available in this package. However, this
font is not actually installed.

According to http://www.tug.dk/FontCatalogue/calligra/, the following
latex input should work, but instead I get complaints that calligra.sty
is not found. A workaround can be done by manually putting
calligra.sty, callig15.mf, and calligra.mf in the current directory or
somewhere where LaTeX can find them.

[Bug 117442] NetworkManager creates multiple instances which cannot be easily removed

2007-05-28 Thread frotz
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

If network-manager is active and one selects
System-Administration-NetworkManager, a second network-manager icon
will appear in the notification area. Selecting again causes a third
and so on. This leads to multiple instances of network-manager fighting
each other, creating the illusion of a slow network.

Two points:
1) Network-manager should not, by default, start up if another instance is
already running.
2) Network-manager should provide a means to completely shut it down from the
notification area icon. Yes, killall will do the job, but I want something for

[Bug 80893] Re: [Feisty] Inaudible audio upon resuming from suspend-to-disk

2007-05-27 Thread frotz
Oops. That should be linux-image-2.6.20-16-386.

The ZUP beep also occurs in the now fixed T42 during bootup. By the
time the system is fully ready for use, the normal beep is back. This
may indicate an underlying problem, or it could just be nothing.

[Bug 80893] Re: [Feisty] Inaudible audio upon resuming from suspend-to-disk

2007-05-26 Thread frotz
This problem manifests in a Thinkpad T42 running Feisty. I noticed a
new package named linux-mages-2.6.20-16-386 and thought this would be
an official substitute for the adhoc one at
http://rookery.ubuntu.com/~kyle/kernels/salgado/2007-04-25/. Doing
nothing else, this does not fix the problem. I then opened
/etc/defaults/acpi-support and made sure that HIBERNATE_MODE is set to
platform.

While trying to track this bug down, I changed the T42's BIOS settings
to emit a beep whenever the keyboard volume buttons are pressed. This
beep normally sounds quite ordinary. When the bug is active, this beep
sounds like ZUP as if it's being choked halfway through.
