[Bug 781088] Re: Time is not syncronized with NTP-server

2011-05-23 Thread gerti
@Clint,
yes, I know about the problem, if the system-clock is too way off. But
that was not the case on my machine - at most a minute or so.
And no, while installing and doing the first boots of the new 11.4,
there were no connection problems.
And yes, unless somebody rewrote the code for the NTP-daemon, which have
worked well for so many years, its the setup-interface, that needs a
little rework (amongst other modules ?)

BTW, what really irks me is, that when I run Windows 7 (have multi-boot
with Grub), which I do every fortnight to keep up with the security- and
important updates - takes 2 - 5 hours every time - the clock is spot on,
right from the GUI shows up (!)

Re: [Bug 781088] Re: Time is not syncronized with NTP-server

2011-05-21 Thread gerti
Hi Clint,

I appreciate, that a lot of the work going on around Ubuntu, is
voluntary non-paid time,
and I DO appreciate, that heroic endeavor; cause otherwise, I could
only fall back to the ridiculously bug-ridden MS Windows...
But I would recommend that a person having authority to and taking
upon himself to close a bug-report (as invalid), at least had read the
bug-report, before closing the case :

I reported, that my completely raw (i.e. non-update) 11.4 Ubuntu did
not adjust the clock correctly.
As this had not been a problem in all the earlier versions of Ubuntu
(and I have run them all), I was sure, that the nice Ubuntu-peoples
would like to know.

Therefore I tried to experiment a little, amongst which removing the
NTP-daemon,
before reporting the bug.

This IS a current bug,
the clock is NOT adjusted correctly after having installed 11.4 on an
Acer Aspire one.

In my opinion its an flawed thinking, to remove the possibility under
settings to configure, which NTP-servers should be contacted to adjust
the clock.

Please reopen this bug

Excerpts from gerti's message of Fri May 20 19:54:59 UTC 2011:
 Hi Clint,

 thanks for your answer.
Yes the 4 NTP-servers, you cite, IF you install the NTP-daemon.
But as it didn't work, I removed the NTP-daemon again.
 I shouldn't need the NTP-daemon, as I don't want to run a NTP-service
for other machines om my network.

 As of this moment
 grep pool /etc/ntp.conf
 yields
 # Use public servers from the pool.ntp.org project.
 # Please consider joining the pool (http://www.pool.ntp.org/join.html).
 server dk.pool.ntp.org iburst
 server pool.ntp.org iburst

I assume because I have run the ntpdate with these NTP-servers
 (several times).

 and running
 ls -l /etc/rc?.d/*ntp*
 yields
ls: cannot access /etc/rc?.d/*ntp*: No such file or directory

again, presumably, because I removed the (for me) useless NTP-daemon.

Gerti, thanks for the reply! I think quite a few users find the ntp
daemon quite useless, which is why it gets installed by default.

If you want to configure things differently from the default, that
is your prerogative. I suggest you add a file to /etc/cron.daily that
runs ntpdate to sync daily, or if you want to do it more often, write
a crontab entry that handles it the way you want it handled.

Hi gerti! Thanks for taking the time to file this bug report and help us
 make Ubuntu better.

I am not seeing the same effect as you on a fresh Natty install.
/etc/ntp.conf has 4 servers configured by default:

Can you upload the contents of /etc/ntp.conf to the bug report, so that
we can try to figure out why ntp isn't syncing?

Also can you provide the output of this command:

 $ ls -l /etc/rc?.d/*ntp*

Re: [Bug 781070] Re: no help in Date/Time

2011-05-16 Thread gerti
Hi Jeremy,

yes I know, but the clock did not synchronize correctly; that was the
reason, why I installed system-config-date.

The clock was often wrong by 15 sec up to several hours.

Strangely enough uninstalling system-config-date an hour ago, seemed
to have done something good, because the clock was spot-on, until 10
minutes ago; now its skewed approx 6 minutes (:^((.

I don't think its my HW, as I never saw this problem before installing
11.4.

regards gerti

Gerti, thanks for submitting the screenshot. I recommend you uninstall
sysytem-config-date as it's no longer the recommended way to configure
 your system clock in Ubuntu.

In Ubuntu (Unity), you can change the time by clicking the clock and
  selecting Time Date Settings.
In Ubuntu Classic, you can change the time by right-clicking on the
 clock and selecting Preferences

I am going to go ahead and close this bug since I think this issue is
resolved. Thanks again for reporting this!

@Phillip Susi
excuse me, have you by any chance been many-years employee at Microsoft ?

This answer is so snotty and shitty, that I have to assume.
Nahh, maybe IBM-employee ?

OF COURSE its not a fix :
Taking away user rights to manipulate his own machine/OS/interface is
NOT, I repeat NOT, a solution; only a cop-out for a very, seriously
lazy developer.

So, in my opinion, this is still an open bug.

That IS the fix. You can no longer accidentally screw it up by checking
 the remember this box.

 Bug description:
Right clicking on a folder and choosing open with, then selecting
another application has the remember this application box checked by
default. If you proceed, that application will be remembered and used
to open folders in the future, which can cause confusion.

Changing the default handler for folders either should not be allowed
at all, or at the very least, the option should not be enabled by
   default.

To fix it, do the following:

   * Open the Computer from the Places menu
   * open a partition, which does have some folders in it
   * right click on any folder
   * select Open with Other application from the context menu
   * select the File browser as the app to open with
   * make sure the remember this application for 'folder' files is checked
   * click OK

[Bug 781081] [NEW] ubuntu-bug just bails out

2011-05-11 Thread gerti
Public bug reported:

when choosing Other Problem it just tells to find the offending process PID
and stops.
This is not very useful as
1) One doesn't know, what process is causing the bug, one wants to report
2) Ubuntu-bug just terminates, so even if one could guess a PID, there is
nowhere to tap it in.

[Bug 781088] [NEW] Time is not syncronized with NTP-server

2011-05-11 Thread gerti
Public bug reported:

11.4
after installation there doesn't seems to be configured any communication with
the nets NTP-servers, as the time isn't set correctly.
using ntpdate, its possible to get the time set correctly, but this only last
until next boot.
1) Default ought to be, that there is communication with NTP-server
(when setting location to Denmark the NTP-server(s) ought be set to
dk.pool.ntp.org)
2) When explicitly using ntpdate, it ought to result in a lasting configuration

Re: [Bug 579298] Re: DNS-servers unavailable in UNE

2010-08-10 Thread gerti
Hi Mathieu,

no DHCP,
I meant that my installation was not set up to use DHCP (as you can
see in the next line of my bug-report, that I configured the IP-setup
manually).

no DNS available
I configured the IP-setup manually, i.e. with a IP-address,
subnet-mask and gateway-address for the eth0 and IP-addresses for two
DNS-servers (which, just to avoid extra misunderstanding, all worked
fine for my Win7 installation, also manually configured).
But when the UNE tries to communicate, it has no DNS-servers available.
When I typed the IP-address myself, e.g. in a web-browsers
address-line or gave nslookup a DNS-server, the traffic got through.

I can't give you excerpts from the logs, as I gave up on the
Wubi-installation.
The bug recurred after two reboots and among many other things the
screen wasn't detected and the resolution couldn't be set manually to
correct values, the sound was rather bad and video and movie-showing
was very erratic.
BTW, I have used the same CD to install the UNE in it's own partition,
with a separate swap-partition. It works, though it can't detect the
screen and movie showing also is useless.
The kernel version is 2.6.32-24-generic at the moment. I can't
remember which version was running when I submitted the report, but
everything was fully updated, using Update Manager tool.
My HW is an Acer Aspire one, BIOS V0.3211, 1 GB RAM, 1366 x 768 screen
(1366 not 1368).
The Hardware Drivers tool can't detect any propriety drivers.

regards gerti

 gerti,

Could you please add some more information to your bug report? I would
like to know what you mean by no DHCP. Is it that there is no DHCP
server available, or is it that your computer does not get a response?
Also, as you set up eth0, what do you mean by configured with DNS IP
addresses but no DNS? If you could attach an excerpt of /var/log/syslog,
that would be most helpful. Please also consider running the 'apport-
collect 579298' command, which can quickly add more information to your
bug report, including the relevant bits from /var/log/syslog. Thanks!

make interfaces managed by changing
/etc/NetworkManager/nm-system-settings.conf, set
managed=true under the ifupdown-section
then restart.
(The doc says that you should run killall nm-system-settings, but that doesn't
work.)
