[Bug 145431] Re: Disable detect refresh rate for nVidia drivers

2011-02-08 Thread oranges
Hey guys, has this been looked at for 10.04?

I think this is a very critical problem, too. I have had like 25 ppl try
Ubuntu out and most of them go nutts, when the prop. drivers are
suggested, installed and the tearing begins. There has to be SOMETHING
you can do about this.

ATI released a new driver, with experimental support for Vsync on the
desktop. My little Intel GMA 950 puppy does Vsync @default with Compiz
just fine on every single thing I throw at it (videos, desktop, games
and so on), but for a few YEARS now this has been a prob. with Nvidia
cards.

Honestly, I really don't care WHY or WHO; PLEASE just fix it, it's
annoying as hell and drivers a lot of ppl nutts, giving Ubuntu a bad
rep. for feeling all teary, buggy and trying to fix it. Needles to say,
that most of them give up after weeks of trying. It's bad enough, that
Plymouth looks ugly with Nvidia prop. drivers and causes all kinds of
flickering and other probs, at least get the desktop right.

I don't mean to be rude, but maybe just calling Nvidia or talking to
AaronP would help at least a BIT here.

Thanks.

2009-12-05 Thread oranges
@Weather: Alright, I will do as you recommended. Any tipps what to post
with that bug report? Any log or xorg file or something?

@Steffen: Turning off Compiz works for you? I have this even if I have
Compiz off. It's really strange. Has someone tried updating to the
newest 195 Beta drivers from Nvidia?

[Bug 471224] Re: [Jaunty, Karmic] screen flickers black randomly with nvidia 185driver and compiz enabled

2009-12-05 Thread oranges
Just wanted to let you guys know. I installed the newest 195 Beta
drivers from the Nvidia page. I followed the this guide -
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=990978 and uninstalled the 180
drivers first. It actually works. The screen flickering is gone. I have
been using this for like 25min now. No problems so far. Read the bug fix
and new features the newer drivers provide - very nice. So, I will not
be opening a new bug report, because the new drivers fix this known
issue. I had a problem with netbook-launcher as well. It was always
using up 100% while using it on my laptop with the older 180 drivers ( I
know, it is meant for netbooks, but I like it on my big screen, like a
media center ). This seems to be fixed now, too.

PS: I will be testing this on two other machines that had this problem
and report back. It should do the trick though. Please post if you have
success with this. At least we know for sure what it was then.

[Bug 471224] Re: [Jaunty, Karmic] screen flickers black randomly with nvidia 185driver and compiz enabled

2009-12-04 Thread oranges
Hey guys, I have the same problem. I have been looking everywhere for an
answer - this is very annoying! It is happening on my laptop, as soon as
it gets hooked up (via VGA-OUT) to my external LCD. It flickers for 1/10
of a second e v e r y few seconds, making the system unusable. It's
disturbing on a big screen. I did n o t have this problem on Jaunty,
though. I have tried Kubuntu, Ubuntu, UNR (all Karmic) - all with the
same result. What to do?

I have the same video card: 7300go with 185 drivers. If I use the 173
drivers, I can't even access or make it work via nvidia xconfig. What's
up there?? O,o Is there any way to fix this?

BTW: This happens at random all the time ( for me ). The only time this
does not happen is when watching a video/movie. This doesn't happen when
using the internal/built in laptop lcd - only when plugging in and using
the external lcd via vga-out.

[Bug 212587] Re: Vsync setting has no effect

2009-10-29 Thread oranges
I have the same problem. If i use metacity only, without the advanced
compiz effects, and then enable the vsync-options in the Nvidia CP, I
get the full vsync in my videos. However, as soon as I enable compiz
again, the tearing begins. I have tried enabling vsync in compiz itself,
which indeed does help - but only for the windows on the desktop and so
on. It doesn't do much for my videos. I must say, at least for me, this
IS one of the reasons why I have to keep Windows on dualboot. If I can't
watch a movie with decent vsync or play a game on my 26 fullhd, then
why am I using it? I have tried to find ANYTHING related to this on
Google and the boards - no one seems to have a solution for this and
many who have told me not to have it, have it but don't notice it ( I
have asked for screenshots ). I agree, on a small LCD it doesn't matter
that much, but on bigger screens, my god, it's too much. My school is
planning to switch to Ubuntu BUT has a problem with this vsync bug (?).
I was the one recommending Ubuntu. Like a bunch of ppl, they want to do
more then just write text, they need good, fluid and vsync'd video
quality. This should be one of those top-ten bugs, as this affects many
areas. What good is all the extra eye candy compiz gives you, if it
tears all the time - especially with cube effects. Some told me that is
the main reason, which can't be. I have used something like compiz (and
the cube) on Windows before - not one bit of tearing. Anyway, realizing
there is a vsync-option in compiz, it should be obvious it is meant to
have it, but must be broken somehow. So, please fix this. I could get
Ubuntu on a bunch of systems around here, if this actually gets
attention and fixed.

Thank you.

have to be done for this feature. We're closing in on 2010, this is a

[Bug 212587] Re: Vsync setting has no effect

2009-10-29 Thread oranges
Hello, first of all, thank you for posting and giving a good and easy to
understand respond.

What would you suggest to do then? Just use Meta (I feel like in
Windows98/XP with that)?

The windows tear but the videos seem to be just fine (vsync'd). By the way,
just because I'm curious, how does Vista do or handle the 3D stuff on the
desktop with vsync? Is there ANY alternativ on Ubuntu? I mean, anything that
will give me at least a few effects, like the ones in Vista, AND guarantee
smooth video-playback? I think such things like, for example vsync, are much
more important, then a few nice effects, but it would be nice to have that
modern feel they give. Anyway, I will suggest my school to use the netbook
remix instead. It should be a piece of cake, even if it's for netbooks, right?
Since one doesn't really need any special effects there and videos seem to play
just fine, it is, up untill now, the only way I see to do this.

@Graeme: was about to say the same thing. We should start a vote on this
or make this more visible to discuss about. Maybe a thread with a
voting-poll? Like I said, this is something that really should be in a
modern OS. Productivity over eye-candy - just my opinion and from the
users I have installed Ubuntu on, including my school.

interesting. Let's see how it goes, shall we?

[Bug 286424] Re: nvidia-settings crashes when user clicks Save To X Configuration File

2009-10-22 Thread oranges
Greetings, just wanted to let you guys know, I solved this problem by
doing:

a) sudo nvidia-xconfig - it should detect the missing default
display/screen entry and create a new file for you to write in.

then do...

b) sudo nvidia-settings and do the usual thing to save your settings.

That's all I did - it worked.
