[Bug 1051167] Re: Windows lose focus in Lubuntu 12.04 and 12.10-beta
I am the original author of this bug report and I'd like to close it. I have discovered that the cause is indeed package "scim" and not "lubuntu-desktop." I suppose that I could redirect this bug to the scim maintainers, but it seems that scim is being deprecated in favor of ibus, which is what I'm now using. If the scim developers wish to pursue this, that's fine, but it may not be necessary. I find that ibus works quite well. Thanks to the developers for all their efforts, and sorry if I wasted anybody's time. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1051167 Title: Windows lose focus in Lubuntu 12.04 and 12.10-beta To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/lubuntu-meta/+bug/1051167/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1051167] [NEW] Windows lose focus in Lubuntu 12.04 and 12.10-beta
Public bug reported: What happens is that a window that I'm working in loses focus. And I'm seeing it only in Lubuntu. I've also got Enlightenment (package e17) installed, and when I login to that the bug goes away. This is why I think it might be the fault of package lubuntu-desktop, but I could be wrong. Let me give you a more detailed description of what I'm seeing. I can open a terminal (usually lxterminal) and I'll be able to type in it just fine. But then if I su to root (note I've set a root password) then focus is gone. I can get it back by clicking on the top of the terminal window, though I might have to click several times. This part of the bug (su to root) happens very consistently, every time. But the bug is bigger than that. I can have the Chromium browser open, and Libreoffice on another desktop. I look up something on the Google web site, I go to cut & paste it into Libreoffice, suddenly my Libreoffice is dead, can't type and clicking on menu items is unresponsive. I go back to Chromium - it's dead too, can't type anything on the search line, menu items also unresponsive. Now of course something like that will always happen if another program is grabbing focus - for example, if Apport wants to report something or you get a message that updates are available. But this loss of focus happens just randomly, even when nothing has popped up. When it happens, I can sometimes get it back by shutting down one of the apps (let us say Libreoffice, and then Chromium back to life). But sometimes not. I might have to close all the apps I have running and restart them to regain focus. Very frustrating, of course, when you're trying to get work done. I have four computers at my disposal. All four have Lubuntu installed. I'm seeing the problem on all four machines. One is an ASUS eeePC (32-bit processor, of course) but the other three all have the 64-bit version of Lubuntu installed. I have Lubuntu 12.10-beta-1 installed on one of the machines, the rest are Lubuntu 12.10. Like I said, if I log out of Lubuntu desktop and log back in with Enlightenment, this issue disappears. One possibility does occur to be, that maybe one of my installed apps is grabbing focus, though it seems unlikely. I do a lot of translation work and have the Chinese language packs installed along with package "scim" as an input method. But even when I kill scim, I still see the problem. OK, hope this helps. Please ask me any questions if you have them. cheers, Roberto ** Affects: lubuntu-meta (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1051167 Title: Windows lose focus in Lubuntu 12.04 and 12.10-beta To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/lubuntu-meta/+bug/1051167/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1041407] Re: No indicator applets in lxpanel Lubuntu 12.10 iso-testing
I just installed Lubuntu 12.10-beta1 today (Sept 10) and wound up with "No Indicators" on my menu bar. Note that I did indeed first do an "apt- get update" and "apt-get upgrade" but still no joy. After finding this bug report, I had success with: apt-get install indicator-application-gtk2 So it wasn't installed by default. I guess it might be good to double- check that this package will be getting installed by default from beta-2 onwards. best regards, Roberto -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1041407 Title: No indicator applets in lxpanel Lubuntu 12.10 iso-testing To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/lubuntu-meta/+bug/1041407/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 613705] Re: English login broken if installation done in Chinese
Hi Gunnar, I finished trying out the language selection (Ubuntu 11.04) from the login screen yesterday at work. This time English is available as an language selection initially, even though the installation was done in Chinese (TW), and one can pick the English used in a variety of locations. Choosing English from the login screen successfully enters one into an English desktop with English menus. Logging in again and choosing Chinese then successfully changes the desktop to a Chinese environment. One can make the changes repeatedly from the login screen, and it never fails. So to sum up: Good news! -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/613705 Title: English login broken if installation done in Chinese -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 311267] Re: Brasero fails to copy audio CD to HP dvd1070
Wow, looks like this bug report has been sitting here dormant for nearly 2 years. Well, now I too have encountered this bug, in Ubuntu 10.10. However, I have some insight into what's causing it, so perhaps it will now get attention. First off, the bug may be in cdrdao, but it also may be that a needed driver is not getting loaded. Here's my situation. I occasionally copy VCDs, which are multi-session CDs. I haven't found any good GUI program for this (there used to be called "Arson" but it's no longer in the Ubuntu repositories), so I do my copying at the command line. I have a notebook computer with an internal DVD drive, plus I've connected an external USB DVD burner. The internal drive shows up as /dev/sr0 and the external drive as /dev/sr2 (there is a /dev/sr2 which is my wireless broadband modem). I wrote a short shell script, which is as follows: === #!/bin/bash cdrdao read-cd --device /dev/sr0 toctoc cdrdao write --device /dev/sr2 toctoc rm toctoc eject /dev/sr0 eject /dev/sr2 === I place the VCD in /dev/sr0, and unmount it (it must be unmounted or cdrdao won't work). I then run the above shell script. I get this error message: ERROR: Drive does not accept any cue sheet variant - please report. Now here's the interesting thing. After some searching, I ran into this thread: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=616843 The original poster found by accident that if he started and then closed k3b, he could run cdrdao just fine and burn a multi-session without error. I tried that, and it also worked. I would guess that k3b is forcing some driver to load, though no idea which one. Anyway, this workaround is good enough for now, but I hope that the whole problem will get fixed. It has occurred to me that maybe if I have my external drive turned on at boot time, it will be detected and the correct driver loaded. Haven't tried that though (and can't while I'm online typing this). Normally, I leave the external DVD burner turned off and only turn it on when needed. When I turn it on, Ubuntu evidently detects it and creates /dev/sr2, but just maybe some driver is not getting loaded. I don't know, but I trust the developers can figure it out. best regards, Robert -- Brasero fails to copy audio CD to HP dvd1070 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/311267 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 665437] [NEW] locales not reconfigured in Ubuntu 10.10
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: ibus I'll start out by saying that I actually SOLVED this problem for myself, but the solution is not obvious and this really ought to be fixed. And the fix is probably easy. I also need to say that I really don't know which package is to blame. I'm going to blame Ibus, but that could be wrong, and I trust the developers will track down which package is at fault. So, without further ado... DESCRIPTION OF THE PROBLEM: OK, I want to install Chinese, and of course I need Chinese input so I can type. I do this with the menus: System --> Administration --> Language Support (Keyboard input method system (Ibus first, later change to SCIM) / (Click "Use input method engines IME to enter complex characters) (Click "Install/Remove Languages) (Chinese Traditional & Simplified) I install SCIM manually: sudo apt-get install scim scim-modules-table scim-chewing scim-pinyin scim-chinese Log out and log back in. I have a nice keyboard icon in the taskbar. But it doesn't work with either Ibus or SCIM. Ctrl-space should bring up a Chinese input box, but it doesn't. I play around with all the controls in the language settings and nothing works. Ibus doesn't work, SCIM doesn't work. When I did all this in Ubuntu 10.04 is was easy, but in 10.10 it's broken. THE SOLUTION: Just on a hunch I decided to open a terminal and run: sudo dpkg-reconfigure locales And then all was well. Works as advertised. That's great, but I never had to do this in 10.04. And I don't think that most people would figure it out on their own. I only tried it after a couple of days of looking online at various comments in the Ubuntu forums. Someone mentioned reconfiguring locales when installing a new language MANUALLY (not through the menus) so I thought I'd try that. The poster wasn't even talking about the particular problem I was experiencing. So I hope it gets fixed. Thank you for your time, I appreciate all the hard work that went into producing Ubuntu, and I hate to complain about anything. best regards. - Robert ** Affects: ibus (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- locales not reconfigured in Ubuntu 10.10 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/665437 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 613705] [NEW] English login broken if installation done in Chinese
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: live-installer I do a fresh install of Ubuntu in Chinese (TWN), do the updates, go to Language Support, do the update there, and then install English from there. I would expect then that the user could select English from the login screen and have menus, etc., all come up in English. But that isn't the case. The language selection at the bottom of the login screen seems to have function at all. I can get English going by changing the order of the listed languages in the list when I open the Language Support, but then choosing Chinese at login causes the login to fail (after a bit of blinking and stuff, one is back to the same login screen). It seems to me that on 8.0 I didn't have this problem. There is a workaround: install in English, then add Chinese language support with these packages: language-support-zh language-pack-zh-hant-base xfonts-intl-chinese Doing this eliminates the problem with language selection at log in. However, it shouldn't be necessary to do this. I am not 100% sure that the problem is being caused by package live- installer-launcher. Possibly the issue is with debconf or a shell script that runs debconf. My level of expertise isn't high enough to know, but I have confidence that the developers will be able to track down the problem. [Bug 151064] Re: Gutsy-beta: no way to cancel stopped jobs
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 144113 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/144113 Very well, but I still suggest changing the menu item to "Print Jobs" rather than "Manage Print Jobs". The latter might seem more clear to you, but as a developer you know the system inside and out. Dumb users like me are expecting to see the word "Print" before anything else. It's a question of being intuitive. Apparently I'm not the only one who got confused by the menus. Not trying to be argumentative, just expressing my "gut level" feelings about Gutsy's interface. Maybe you should poll a few fellow users and see how they feel. Gutsy looks like it's going to be a great release, by the way. [Bug 144113] Re: There should be a way to see the job queue
As an addendum to what I wrote just above, I think the menu item should also be renamed. Less confusing (and also shorter) would be: System-Administration-Print Jobs This would have the added advantage of being in alphabetical order ("Print Jobs" would appear just above the "Printing" menu item). -- There should be a way to see the job queue https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/144113 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 144113] Re: There should be a way to see the job queue
The fix has been placed under "Applications-Accessories-Manage Print Jobs", but it really should be under "System-Administration-Manage Print Jobs". That's where you find the "Printing" menu. Putting these two closely related apps in separate menus is quite confusing. It confused me enough that I wound up reporting it as a duplicate but (https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/151064). -- There should be a way to see the job queue https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/144113 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 151068] Gutsy-beta: manager-network-gnome dies
Public bug reported: In Gutsy-beta, network manager starts out fine when I first boot up. It detects my default wireless system and logs on. If I click on the network manager icon, I can also see my neighbor's wireless network, though of course I'm not logged on to those. This is all as it should be. But then after maybe an hour of use, my wireless network dies. Furthermore, clicking on the network icon reveals that my network still shows (though it's disconnected) but the neighbor's has disappeared completely from the menu, as if it no longer existed. Even worse is the procedure to recover from this error. No amount of fooling around with the network manager can make it work. I've tried logging out (as a user) and logging back in again, to no avail. Rebooting the computer won't work either! All the time, I notice my wireless network light blinking furiously (maybe it's searching for the network?). In fact, the only way I can recover is to shut-down and restart the machine. It would appear that the bug puts the wireless device into such a state that it cannot recover unless it is physically turned off. Just to eliminate the possibility that this is an error with my hardware, I switched the session from Gnome to IceWM, and later to FVWM- crystal. I did this because when Gnome is not running, the Gnome network manager will also not start automatically. Then, I installed and ran another network manager utility called WICD, which does not require Gnome. Connecting to the wireless network with WICD, everything works fine. I can be only all day, without a hiccup. This indicates to me that the problem is with network-manager-gnome and is therefore not hardware related. However, if you'd like to know about my hardware, it's an Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 3945ABG (installed in a Dell Inspiron N laptop). This wireless device is supported by the Linux kernel and is not using Ndiswrapper. ** Affects: network-manager-applet (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Gutsy-beta: manager-network-gnome dies https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/151068 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 151064] Gutsy-beta: no way to cancel stopped jobs
Public bug reported: When I start a print job that gets stopped for some reason (printer not turned on, out of paper, or maybe I just want to abort a job I started, whatever), there is no way to cancel it with system-config-printer.py. In Fiesty, this was dead easy - there was a dialog in Administration-Printing that allowed you to pause, resume or cancel jobs. Maybe there is a dialog menu somewhere - I've looked and looked, and so far can't find it. If it exists, it must be cleverly hidden. The only way I've found to manage print jobs in Gutsy-beta is to open Firefox, type http://localhost:631/jobs/ and manage it (through CUPS). This is not intuitive, and I doubt that the majority of users would know how to do this. ** Affects: system-config-printer (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Gutsy-beta: no way to cancel stopped jobs https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/151064 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 145277] Wireless won't connect in Gutsy (Ubuntu 7.10)
Public bug reported: I'm running Gutsy Tribe 5. The network manager applet doesn't show a connection, and indeed, it won't connect. But oddly, it does detect my wireless network (and my neighbor's as well) - it just refuses to connect to it. No amount of clicking on the network will persuade it to connect. I do not have an ESSID, this is an open unprotected network, so there should be nothing to configure. With Feisty, it connects automatically. I have another network applet (not included with Ubuntu) called Wicd (see wicd.sourceforge.net). I installed it in Gutsy and it works - I can connect without a hitch. So I conclude that there is nothing wrong with the wireless driver, and that the problem must be with the network- manager-gnome applet. My hardware - I have one of those Dell laptops that comes with Ubuntu pre-installed (Dell Inspiron 1420 N). The wireless card is Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 3945ABG. ** Affects: network-manager-applet (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Wireless won't connect in Gutsy (Ubuntu 7.10) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/145277 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 145068] Ubuntu 7.04 - cannot boot live CD
Public bug reported: I have one of the new Dells that comes with Ubuntu pre-installed. Runs OK, but the live CD that came with it cannot boot. I always get to a text-mode screen with this error message: /bin/sh: can't access tty; job control turned off (initramfs) I know it's not a defective CD. I have another copy I downloaded - same issue. Furthermore, I downloaded Linux Mint (latest version based on Ubuntu 7.04) and get the same result. But I can boot other live CDs (such as the latest Kanotix, which is Debian-based). I CAN install Ubuntu if I use the "alternate install" CD - it's only the live CD that won't boot. I am not the only one having this problem. I searched the linuxquestions.org forum, and came up with this: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/showthread.php?t=474493 I tried some of the suggestions on this forum, such as playing with the BIOS settings to turn off AHCI on the SATA controller - this was not successful. Please get back to me if you need any more info about my hardware. [Bug 59386] using /dev/ttyUSB0 in gnome-ppp
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-ppp I recently succeeded in getting Ubuntu to work with an external serial modem attached to my computer through the USB port. However, this was difficult to configure and I'm sure a newbie couldn't do it. Yet a simple change to gnome-ppp would have made it easy. More details below... First, to describe my hardware: a notebook computer (IBM ThinkPad X31), which has no serial ports but has USB ports. I purchased a special cable which has a built-in adaptor, so that the USB port can be physically connected to an external serial modem. The problem is this: the character device required for this set-up to work is /dev/ttyUSB0. Fortunately, this device does exist in Ubuntu, as you can see: [EMAIL PROTECTED]:/> ls -l /dev/ttyUSB0 crw-rw 1 root dialout 188, 0 2006-09-07 09:36 /dev/ttyUSB0 The only trouble is that gnome-ppp does not recognize /dev/ttyUSB0. When you try to configure it, you are only offered these choices: /dev/modem /dev/ttyS0 /dev/ttyS1 /dev/ttyS2 /dev/ttyS3 There is in fact no /dev/modem - it is a symbolic link. For me to make my hardware work, I had to create a symbolic link: ln -s /dev/ttyUSB0 /dev/modem After this, I could configure gnome-ppp to access my modem using /dev/modem. So it worked - until I rebooted. Thanks to udev, every time I rebooted my /dev/modem would disappear and I had to create it manually again. To solve this problem, I created a start-up script (which I named modem.sh) with this content: #! /bin/sh # ln -s /dev/ttyUSB0 /dev/modem I placed the script in /etc/init.d and ran this command: update-rc.d modem.sh defaults Now I am able to use my modem with gnome-ppp, so my problem is solved. The only real issue is that all of the above would be nearly impossible for a Linux newbie to figure out. It occurs to me that this complexity would be rendered unnecessary if gnome-ppp simply offered /dev/ttyUSB0 as one of its choices. It is my suggestion that this should be done for the next release. best regards, Robert ** Affects: gnome-ppp (Ubuntu) Importance: Untriaged Status: Unconfirmed -- using /dev/ttyUSB0 in gnome-ppp https://launchpad.net/bugs/59386 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 56196] winmodem support
Public bug reported: Perhaps this won't be considered a bug, but I think it should be. I've experimented with various distros, and I've found that the internal winmodem in my laptop (IBM X31 ThinkPad) "just works" with Kanotix. I did not download and install any additional drivers - it was automatically detected by Kanotix and the driver loaded. Unfortunately, the winmodem does not work with Ubuntu, which surprises me since Kanotix is also Debian-based. For me this is a big issue, because I'm presently stuck on dial-up, and I cannot use an external serial modem because my laptop lacks a serial port. I suppose a PCMCIA modem would work, but I don't have one and they are no longer easy to find. I realize that winmodems are a headache for developers, but if it can work on Kanotix, surely it could be made to work on Ubuntu. Perhaps the following specs will be helpful - from the "lspci" command, my modem is identified thus: :00:1f.6 Modem: Intel Corporation 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) AC'97 Modem Controller (rev 01) Kanotix mounts the modem as /dev/ttySL0 Thank you and best regards, Robert Note: the original reporter indicated the bug was in package 'kernel- image'; however, that package was not published in Ubuntu. ** Affects: Ubuntu Importance: Untriaged Status: Unconfirmed -- winmodem support https://launchpad.net/bugs/56196 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
