[Bug 1863417] Re: libc6 2.30-0ubuntu2.1 is not available on i386, breaking multiarch

2020-02-17 Thread pvdeynse
Comment 11 from bug 1854326:

Ok, so I have re-triggered the i386 build and this time it built
correctly, so the i386-caused issues should have disappeared. I will be
releasing the SRU if everything seems to work properly now.

I've re-enabled "Pre-released updates (eoan-proposed)" under "Developer
Options" in "software-properties-gtk" and libc6 2.30-0ubuntu2.1 has been
properly installed now.

As a test I've removed and re-installed "winehq-devel" (5.2~eoan)
without any problems.

[Bug 991539] Re: brightness control not working

2012-08-19 Thread pvdeynse
Below is what I did and it solved my brightness problem.
the original doc can be found here:

http://www.techjail.net/solved-brightness-problem-in-ubuntu-12-04-precise-pangolin.html

Open terminal ( Ctrl+Alt+T ) and type:

sudo gedit /etc/default/grub

You will find this line in the new opened window:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=quiet splash
Change it to:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=quiet splash acpi_backlight=vendor
Save and close the window and type this in the terminal:

sudo update-grub

This will update your grub and while rebooting your PC, it will set an
extra parameter on the grub menu during boot. This problem might have
occur on due to the upgrade on kernel.

[Bug 684083] Re: Plymouth hangs after installation of nvidia drivers on natty alpha1

2011-02-08 Thread pvdeynse
@Doug

the nvidia driver is currently broken in Natty, see Bug #711409
you should be able to boot in recovery mode and rename file
/etc/X11/xorg.conf (e.g. /etc/X11/xorg.conf_backup)
this should allow to boot the system using the fallback nouveau video driver,
at least thats how it worked for me.
we have to wait till bug #711409 is fixed.

[Bug 396448] Re: inconsistent automounting on startup

2010-04-15 Thread pvdeynse
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: devicekit-disks

  When starting a GNOME session without dk-disks running already, gvfs
  D-BUS activates dk-disks, which causes an automount attempt on internal
  hard disks. This doesn't happen if dk-disks is already running.

  I suspect it's due to dk-disks sending out new volume events during
  coldplugging.

  Reproducer:

-   ps ux|grep gvfs|awk '{print $2}'|xargs kill
-   gvfs-mount -l
+   ps ux|grep gvfs|awk '{print $2}'|xargs kill
+   gvfs-mount -l

  This does not trigger automounting. However, if this spawns dk-disks it
  happens:

-   sudo killall devkit-disks-daemon
-   ps ux|grep gvfs|awk '{print $2}'|xargs kill
-   gvfs-mount -l
+   sudo killall devkit-disks-daemon
+   ps ux|grep gvfs|awk '{print $2}'|xargs kill
+   gvfs-mount -l

[Bug 542546] Re: no GUI after upgrade from lucid beta to current

2010-03-20 Thread pvdeynse
I've got a similar problem this morning, I was running Lucid alpha-3 and
did an upgrade using the gnome menus, after reboot I was left with an
X-window and a mouse, no metacity window manager. Rebooting my system in
maintenance and doing a manual upgrade didn't help. After several
attempts I did CTR-ALT+F1 at the X-window, logged in and did:

  sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

The above installed a lot of software, after installation I rebooted my
system and everything was working fine again!

[Bug 182996] Re: [hardy] kernel 2.6.24-3-generic #1 SMP -- ide cdrom hdc: status error: error=0x00 { }

2008-04-26 Thread pvdeynse
This is indeed odd. This bug is fixed for me too.
One remark though, my ide DVD no longer has device /dev/hdc but with Kernel:
2.6.24-16-generic  it has /dev/scd0
I'm using a Philips DVD8801

[Bug 212271] Re: 2.6.24-15-generic: saa7134-alsa makes HAL to fail

2008-04-20 Thread pvdeynse
@Alexandr Rudenko
@Fran

   re-installing the linux-restricted-modules-2.6.24-16-generic did re-enable
the NVIDIA driver, but configuring the NVIDIA X Server Settings from the
Desktop menu System
   setting gives the following error message : select -- X Server Display
Configuration

  ( tried to changed the resolution back to my original 1440x900 )

while selecting Save to X Configuration File got error message :

Unable to remove old X config backup

file '/etc/X11/xorg.conf.backup'

  To solve, open a terminal window and type sudo nvidia-settings and repeat
same steps as above, saving to X Configuration file will work now.
   Does anyone know if there is already a Bug report open for this? Couldn't
find any.

2008-03-07 Thread pvdeynse

I have :

Feb 22 15:37:29 pvdeynse-desktop kernel: [0.00] Linux version
2.6.24-8-generic ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) (gcc version 4.2.3 (Ubuntu
4.2.3-1ubuntu2)) #1 SMP Thu Feb 14 20:40:45 UTC 2008 (Ubuntu

I just added the text all_generic_ide (without quotes) at the end of
the boot parameters and it works

unbelievable but the truth, the following applications are now working for me,
in the past I was not able to play an audio CD, but now the following
applications are all working

i have a similar problem and created Bug #187666 a while ago, since then i'm
still trying to understand what's going on
all i can say now is that is is not firefox only related, because i can make
crash nearly any application.
all i need to do is to open the application e.g. firefox or thunderbird and
goto - Bookmarks - Organize Bookmarks...
in the new window labeled Bookmarks Manager - File - Import...
 new window labeled Import Wizard click on Next button
 new window labeled Import Bookmark File - click cancel to close
this window
now we are back on window labeled Bookmark Manager
   repeat same procedure - File -Import
 firefox will hang now, and eventualy crash

[Bug 182996] Re: [hardy] kernel 2.6.24-3-generic #1 SMP -- ide cdrom hdc: status error: error=0x00 { }

2008-01-26 Thread pvdeynse
i've upgrade to the latest Hardy kernel

( Linux version 2.6.24-5-generic ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) (gcc version 4.2.3
20080114 (prerelease) (Ubuntu 4.2.2-7ubuntu1)) #1 SMP Thu Jan 24
19:45:21 UTC 2008 (Ubuntu 2.6.24-5.8-generic)

still same problem, one remark, after reseting cdrom with command

   sudo hdparm -w /dev/hdc

we can see that DMA has been disabled, so in order to re-enable DMA do
command

   sudo hdparm -d1 /dev/hdc

to see if DMA is enabled do following command

   sudo hdparm /dev/hdc

/dev/hdc:
 IO_support=  1 (32-bit)
 unmaskirq =  1 (on)
 using_dma =  1 (on)   -   DMA is enabled
 keepsettings  =  0 (off)
 readonly  =  0 (off)
 readahead = 256 (on)
 HDIO_GETGEO failed: Inappropriate ioctl for device

after enable of DMA i could use my CDROM with a decent data transfer

i order to solve above error messages, here is how to proceed:

open a virtual terminal, and type the following:

sudo hdparm -w /dev/hdc

after the above command error messages stop, and in the dmesg you can
see the following:

.
[  175.999491] hdc: DMA disabled
[ 176.044912] hdc: ATAPI reset complete
