[Bug 1798679] Re: 18.10 installer crashed just after time zone selection

2018-10-19 Thread rbmorse
Hi Mathieu.

The system (ASUS X97) has only one disk attached, an Intel series 320
SSD in M.2 form factor with the motherboard configured to use the M.2
slot as NVMe. The disk is partitioned as a GPT device, with one (empty)
EXT4 partition when the install starts. The install medium is a USB
connected flash memory device. The selected install option is the first
one for systems with no existing operating system detected.

The installer proposes creating two partition, the EFISYS FAT partition
and the remainder of the drive an a single EXT4 partition. I accept
this and ensure "format partition" is selected. The confirmation dialog
indicates these choices are selected

Postmortem shows the EFI partition is created, the EXT4 partition is
not.

I am told this morning by a source of unknown reliability that my
particular motherboard (ASUS Z97Pro) does not support booting from an
NVMe device. This could certainly be the case.

The Intel device works fine for storage in a live session when mounted
manually.

I can install Cosmic to the same system if I add a Samsung 580EVO SSD at
port SATA0 and use that as the install target. If specified, the
installer will properly set up the Intel device as an additional storage
medium.

So, given that, at this point it appears likely I experienced a
motherboard limitation rather than a bug in Cosmic.

RE: [Bug 269408] Re: system-config-printer.py crashed with SIGSEGV in calloc()

2011-11-25 Thread rbmorse
I'm sorry Lars, but this is a very old bug report. I no longer have that
particular configuration available for testing, in fact, I've gone
entirely back to Windows (except on the Macintoshes, of course). There
has been a small flurry of messages about this particular report in the
last month or so that indicates to me some people are still experiencing
the problem, but I can't verify it here.

This bug was reported on an old version of system-config-printer. I
cannot reliably reproduce this and there don't seem to be reports of
further occurences of the issue. Could you please check if this issue is
present in the current version, and if it is reopen the bug to a NEW

[Bug 549801] Re: USB WiFi adapter with rt2870 chipset won't connect

2010-06-29 Thread rbmorse
I see the same behavior as reported in the original post on Maverick
Alpha. My device is a Linksys W600USBN usb wi-fi adapter built around
the RT2870 chipset.

Device is detected and initialized at boot and is able to complete a
WPA2 secured link with my access point. Connection drops after some
activity on the link and cannot be reinitialized except by resetting the
machine.

Blacklisting the community drivers as per the OP allows the device to
work normally and reliably.

[Bug 349774] [NEW] cannot change background color on parts of panel

2009-03-27 Thread rbmorse
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

1. Ubuntu 9.04 (beta1)
2. gnome-panel version Installed: 1:2.26.0-0ubuntu4
3. I expect to be able to set the background color on the panels behind the
system menu, notification area, calendar applet, and clock applet (upper panel)
and taskbar areas of the lower panel
4. The background color of the panel areas described in #3 cannot be changed by
the user.

The attachment is a screenshot showing the upper panel as it presently
exists. Prior to the update to the Jaunty Beta the background of the
menu panel, notification panel and calendar applet assumed the same
background color as the rest of the panel.

There may be another work around:

Open the file:

/etc/cups/ppd/{nameofdriverfile}.ppd

with a root-permissioned text editor. About line number 70, in the
section named "Basic Device Capabilities", find the line that reads:

*LanguageLevel: "3"

and change the "3" to "2". Save and restart CUPS:

sudo /etc/init.d/cups restart

and test. This work-around mitigates the problem on both Intrepid and
Jaunty 64-bit installations.

[Bug 272137] Re: Printing from gnome apps doesn't work

2008-12-20 Thread rbmorse
I've just had this manifest today on Intrepid 64-bit after the update to
the 1.6.27-11 kernel (and others). GNOME apps cannot print to my
networked HP 2605DN Color Laser Printer.

Firefox prints fine
The Printer test page from system > administration > Printing > right click on
printer prints fine
The printer test page from the CUPS server prints fine
Evolution prints

Gedit does not print
GnuCash does not print
The printer test page from HPLIP does not print
OpenOffice.Org Word processor does not print

I can access the printer's built-in web interface and can execute the
printer's internal test page in that manner.

No error messages are displayed. Commanding the print works fine, HPLIP
indicates a new job has been sent to the printer. The status light on
the printer's front panel blinks once or twice, then returns to steady
green (ready). HPLIP indicates the print job completed successfully, but
not output is produced nor does the printer look like it's trying to
print anything.

The CUPS log(s) do not show any obvious (to me) errors.

An HP Photosmart 1215 attached to a USB port works correctly, so I'm not
in extremis here, but I am about of ink.

[Bug 277404] Re: hp laserjet postscript text print does not print some characters

2008-10-13 Thread rbmorse
After installing the latest updates to the openprinting.ppd package the
previously functional workaround of substituting the .ppd file from the
Hardy repository now produces identical output to the latest .ppd file
in the Intrepid repository...i.e., when printing from a text-based
application certain characters are not printed correctly.

Setting the printer to use the generic postscript driver via gnome-
control-panel results in correct output, however certain printer
functions are not available with this driver.

The two files are attached, renamed to identify the version of the .ppd
file with which they were produced.

I used the same source file for both, and the errors produced with the
intrepid version of the .ppd consist of a "box" character substituted
for the "f" character in the Page header (1 o 1) and the three "8"
characters on the second line also print as "box" characters.

The hardy version of the .ppd produces correct output.

Hi. Thank you for your assistance.

Yes, switching to the .ppd file that ships with Intrepid causes the
problem to manifest. I received an update to HPLIP yesterday that also
caused the problem to manifest, but replacing Interpid's .ppd with
Hardy's .ppd corrects the problem.

I should reiterate that I see the problem when printing documents from
Text Editor and Gnucash's check printing. I haven't really tested any
other applications, but will do so if you think that might be helpful.

Sure. the two files are attached. I have altered the names

the distro version will restore them to "as shipped" condition.

The files are from their respective

[Bug 277404] Re: hp laserjet postscript text print does not print some characters

2008-10-03 Thread rbmorse
I have isolated the cause of this to a problem in the openprinting
driver file for the HP ColorLaserJet 2605 printer:

/usr/share/ppd/openprinting/HP/HP_Color_Laserjet_2605.ppd.gz

If you have a Hardy installation available, the workaround is to use the
.ppd file that came with 8.04:

1. Open HPLIP and remove (uninstall) the printer
2. Open your browser and navigate to localhost:631 to enter CUPS. Click
"printers" and remove the 2605 if it still shows as present. If prompted for
username and password, use your normal Ubuntu username/password. Close the
browser window.
3. Open a terminal window and restart CUPS (sudo /etc/init.d/cups restart)
4. copy the Hardy version of the 2605.ppd file (HP_Color_Laserjet_2605.ppd.gz)
to /usr/share/ppd/openprinting/HP/
5. Open the HPLIP utility and install the printer from there. That should
update CUPS at the same time.
6. test.

Alternate workaround if you don't care about doing things correctly:

In your Hardy installation, find the file
/etc/cups/ppd/HP_Color_Laserjet_2605dn.ppd. Copy that file to your
Intrepid's /etc/cups/ppd/HP_Color_Laserjet_2605dn.ppd (replacing the
existing file) and restart cups ( sudo /etc/init.d/cups restart).

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-session

Ubuntu Intrepid 32 Alpha-5.
gnome-session 2.23.90-ubuntu-2

1.Attempt to add a new item to the list of applications to run at
startup with the add dialog results in an error, "the startup command
cannot be empty" even though the command line is filled in and properly
points to a valid executable.

2. Attempts to edit an existing entry in the sessions manager list do
not "stick", i.e., the changes can be entered but are not saved.

** Affects: gnome-session (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

I regret to report the new driver did not change
anything...the X session still presents a blank (black) screen.

I see that you pushed a newer build of of
xorg.xserver.video.ati earlier today. I'll keep an eye out
for that in updates and see if that makes a difference, too.

No joy.

I'm not surprised as the radeon driver doesn't do 3D on this
chipset (RV-670) yet, but it was worth a shot.

In any case, setting that option in xorg.conf did not change
the system's behavior.

Hi Bryce.

As requested, I added the Option "AGPmode" "X" statement to
the device section of the default /etc/X11/xorg.conf.

No change. All attempted modes (1,2,4) produced the same
result: No display (black, blank). X server running.

Hi Bryce.

The video card is a PCI-e card and there is no AGP slot on
this motherboard. Do you still want me to try
adding/changing the AGPmode parameter in xorg.conf?

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-EP35-DS3R

Video CardGigabyte GV-RX387512H (ATI HD3870 - PCI-e)

The system homebrew, but all settings are default.

There is no AGPmode setting in BIOS.

I note that editing xorg.conf to load either the "vesa" or
"radeonhd" driver results in proper operation. The default
video driver is the "radeon" driver, so perhaps something in
the specific build of the xorg-xserver-video-ati driver used
in the daily is the problem.

Please let me know if I can provide any additional information.

[Bug 199960] Re: error starting GNOME Settings Daemon

2008-03-13 Thread rbmorse
Bryce, the .deb prevents the gnome-settings-dameon crash with radeonhd.

What is the preferred option...downlevel gnome-settings-daemon or
disabling xrandr plugin via gconf-editor and using the newer gnome-
settings-daemon file? Operationally, it does not make much difference
here.

Hi Bryce.

Those .debs cleared up the dependency issue with the
gnome-control-center .deb you pushed earlier, but I regret to inform
that gnome-settings-daemon still crashes as soon as I enable the xrandr

[Bug 197153] Re: gnome-settings-daemon crashed with SIGSEGV

2008-03-04 Thread rbmorse
Let me confirm what Florent reported.

I'm using the radeonhd driver (latest from git).

I previously indicated the gnome-setting-
daemon_2.21.91-0ubuntu6-i386.deb package had fixed the problem, but
further poking around reveals that only the crash on startup symptom was
fixed.

Selecting system>preferences>screen resolution from the menu still
triggers a crash.

I have the same problem with 32 bit hardy so I don't think it's a 64-bit
issue. See bug#197698

Try this:

system > administration > printing, then select "new printer." The
druid should walk you through the process...it found my networked color
laserjet with out drama.

Once installed, the printer should show up in hp-toolbox and can be
administered normally via hplip.

gnome-desktop1:2:21.92-ubuntu3 (installed via update) changed behavior a

installing gnome-settings-daemon_2.21.91-0ubuntu6_i386.deb from Bryce's

actions on te machine are held in abeyance. Once md5sums completes,

[Bug 174309] radeonhd -- package doesn't install driver

2007-12-05 Thread rbmorse
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-radeonhd

Installing the radeonhd package from repositroy into Hardy Alpha1+. The
package appears to install normally, but due to the lack of an X
configuration file, the driver is not loaded when the X server restarts.

Workaround: After installing the xserver-xorg-video-radeonhd package
from repository in the normal manner, open a terminal window and run

sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

and follow the prompts. When selecting a video driver, note that
radeonhd is not presented as an option (bug filed separately) so select
vesa here and complete the process. Then, using your root permission
text editor of choice edit the file

/etc/X11/xorg.conf

to replace the argument "vesa" with "radeonhd" in the "Driver" line of
the device section. Save and restart the X server
++ or reboot as desired.

When the machine restarts and after a normal log in, you can confirm the
radeonhd driver is loaded by examining /var/logs/Xlog.0 in a text
editor. Look about half-way through the log or search on radeonhd.

I'm on Feisty (ore-beta) now so I'm not sure what is available for other
versions, but Feisty comes with an application named:

keep

It's a KDE app, functionally similar to kdar, but easier to use and configure
(for me) and very functional.

The only thing I am using it for at the moment is to make an automatic backup
of /home to another physical hard drive, but it looks like it can do much
more. I haven't had time to get into it, yet. Give it a try.

grsync

also will do light backups but it is not very configurable (no excludes, for
one) but it is just a front-end to rsync so the basic engine is very robust.

No, the cupsys update (including the last one) is broken in that it tries to
install some -dev packages that have unresolved dependencies so the whole
install fails and leaves the existing CUPS in an indeterminate state.

I resolved the problem, temporarily, by purging CUPSYS and installing the
1.2.8-0ubuntu6 packages manually. The -devs are still broken, but the mains
will install fine locally from .debs and CUPS goes back to work.

One loses any installed printers and configurations in the purge,
unfortunately, but they now can be put back, and it's a small price to pay to
be able to print at all.

Oh, the joys of working with a pre-release operating system, eh?

Brian, sorry to report the problem persists. With the BIOS set to SATA
as AHCI, the IPL process stalls with the message:

/bin/sh: can't access tty; job control turned off
(initramfs)_

The same herd 3 CD boots normally with the BIOS set to SATA as IDE.

The machine is an Intel D975XBX. All SATA drives are attached to the
ICH7 controller.

Re: [Bug 78320] Re: Adept Updater crashes on update

2007-01-25 Thread rbmorse
IFbecause I don't know...apt-get works on your VM, you can update
by doing the following two, separate commands sequentially in a
terminal window (konsole)

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

I've been doing this for a couple of weeks, but I'm working a real
install to disk rather than a VM. BTW...adept is still broken despite
several updates since the bug was originally reported.

Re: [Bug 62699] Re: [edgy] wrong dependencies in kdar

2007-01-15 Thread rbmorse
I've since found the Grsync package will do what I need. It also has
more features and flexibility than KDAR.

I resisted it at first because it requires some GNOME libs, but I
ended up installing other applications that also needed a bunch of
the GNOME support stuff (Gnucash, mostly) so the overhead of
supporting Grsync became minimal.

[Bug 78320] Adept Updater crashes on update

2007-01-07 Thread rbmorse
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: adept-updater

Running Kubuntu Feisty. Adept 2.1.2-ubuntu6

This morning when I fire up the machine Adept-Notifier tells me packages
are available. Run the scan for updates and that returns a new window
with the message "a new version of Kubuntu is available. Click next if
you wish to upgrade now."

click "next" and Adept crashes to nothingness.

using apt-get dist-upgrade frpm a terminal window will download and
install any/all upgradable packages and clears the notifier alert.

I only had to install the libdar3c2a package and kdar has
been working fine. Been doing this since Dapper and it
hasn't dropped a bit, yet.

[Bug 76058] Feisty: Creating CD with k3b from .ISO file fails

2006-12-16 Thread rbmorse
Public bug reported:
