[Bug 2018449] Re: `xmms2 add --playlist ... ` causes a core dump

2024-03-02 Thread rew
Any progress on this???

I've tried to help by
- recompiling the sources for my system. Same problem.
- adding a debug statement: dpkg-buildpackage complains.
- I tried recompiling the sources left behind. They complain. Apparently dpkg
provides some required "environment".
- recompiling that way is slow: It always restarts at at the configure stage
and a clean build.
- I tried compiling the github stable sources. I can't get them to compile.
- I tried compileing the devel sources. I can't get them to compile.
- I tried running gdb on the binary built, but that one "has no symbols" so not
useful.

So after 3 hours of "trying to pinpoint the problem" I've made zero
progress and I'm giving up. Someone else will have to take a look. :-(

Affects me since at least sept 2022. I've been using a workaround (i.e.
not using xmms2) since about that time.

[Bug 1977507] [NEW] Cupsd crashes every other job.

2022-06-03 Thread rew
Public bug reported:

After yesterdays upgrade (apt log attached) cupsd has stared to crash
again every other job. It is then restarted and the next job prints
fine.

This situation I recognize from the past. It's been like this for a
while in the past. Back then I didn't know the upgrade that caused it as
half the time it would print just fine.

I tried filing a bug with "ubuntu-bug" on the fileserver, but the
firefox that was started to let me file the bug wasn't able to get me
logged into launchpad. (Works like a charm on my desktop google-chrome).

[Bug 1571296] Re: Sawfish crash

2021-12-03 Thread rew
When I start a sawfish session I still get a complaint from sawfish:
"error, click to continue". I tracked this down to a file that is
distributed with sawfish not being included in the ubuntu package. Once
I tracked it down, I of course installed it, but on both my workstations
an upgrade has negated that effort and now it complains again every time
I log in. No I'm no longer on 16.04. (but not yet on 21.x).

I /am/ using my own session script, but the one with Ubuntu either is
the same with regards to this or it is worse (closes sawfish and
therefore the session).

When patching such things, I usually stop at "works for me" and in this
case I have some customization for myself that I like and put in. But if
you promise it won't be for nothing, then I'd be happy to provide a "for
general use" patch, as long as that means it'll work "reasonably" for me
"out of the box" on future Ubuntu releases. If you ignore my efforts and
I will still have to fix it in the future I certainly won't waste my
time making something "for general use".

[Bug 1909297] Re: cups missing write permission (for sendmessage operation) in apparmor

2021-06-28 Thread rew
Hi,

I got fed up and figured out how to configure apparmor to allow it.

I added

# *** Added by rew.
  /run/systemd/notify rw,

near line 108 of /etc/apparmor.d/usr.sbin.cupsd

That solves it.

2021-03-09 Thread rew
Nope Not fixed But I think the behaviour changed from last time
I tested it (my machine crashed inbetween... Grrr..).

So now, when I drag a tab it shows as a new window, and stays "attached
to the mouse" until it snaps into an existing window when I come close
to the tab bar in the other window.

Then on the next click anywhere on any of my screens, the tab that
was just parked as a tab in a window is suddenly detached and placed
randomly (i.e. as far as I can see: Not where I released the drag
nor where I clicked).

[Bug 1918269] [NEW] moving tabs to a new window no longer works.

2021-03-09 Thread rew
Public bug reported:

Somewhat similar to bug #999632, but different and quite new.

When I have a tab that I want to move to a NEW window, I used to be able
to drag the tab and then when releasing it near the tab bar of another
chromium window, it would snap into that window's tab list. This still
works.

But when I release the tab NOT near the tab bar of another window, it
used to create a new window. This is convenient: I have multiple screens
so when I decide I need to view this tab alongside something in my
existing window, I drag the tab to create a new window on the other
screen.

Workaround: create a new window first then drag the tab there. But this
"used to work". It is not necessary to do it like this. I liked it the
old way.

This changed somewhere in the last week. The behaviour swapped on my home
computer yesterday (but it was still normal at work) and today I had to restart
chromium (because all new tabs were reporting "aw snap!", reported in another
bugreport) and now it's here too. Package: chromium

[Bug 1893650] Re: Chromium snap causes network traffic. (Duh!)

2021-02-20 Thread rew
I copied the "common" directory of ~/snap/chromium to a local filesystem
(1Gb ) and created a symlink to point to the local version.

When I start chromium I then get:

mkdir: cannot create directory '/home/wolff/snap/chromium/common': File
exists

and chrome refuses to start. I then restored my backup and chromium is
back to the old behaviour.

[Bug 1893650] Re: Chromium snap causes network traffic. (Duh!)

2021-02-20 Thread rew
(earlier this week:) To debug this further I started chromium under
"strace -f -o /tmp/..." : Must be run as root. Hmm.

Today I tried something different. I used strace on ALL 33 chrome
processes. Many did something every second or so, just one was in a
tight loop. This is also the process that continues to use about 30% of
one core.

I used "task manager" from Chrome to try to figure out what chrome would
call this process itself. I expected to find "browser", but the top CPU-
users according to chrome were using only about 2% of CPU time, so it is
not listed on the "task manager" list. :-/

The process that is using CPU time, turns out to be the same as the one
that is causing the network traffic: Just stopping that one process
causes the network traffic to stop.

What I don't understand is how the calls:

poll([{fd=11, events=POLLIN}, {fd=12, events=POLLIN}, {fd=30, events=POLLIN},
{fd=31, events=POLLIN}, {fd=41, events=POLLIN}], 5, 0) = 1 ([{fd=12,
revents=POLLIN}])
recvmsg(30, {msg_namelen=0}, 0) = -1 EAGAIN (Resource temporarily
unavailable)
read(12, "!", 2)= 1
write(28, "\0", 1) = 1
recvmsg(30, {msg_namelen=0}, 0) = -1 EAGAIN (Resource temporarily
unavailable)
recvmsg(31, {msg_namelen=0}, 0) = -1 EAGAIN (Resource temporarily
unavailable)
recvmsg(31, {msg_namelen=0}, 0) = -1 EAGAIN (Resource temporarily
unavailable)
recvmsg(31, {msg_namelen=0}, 0) = -1 EAGAIN (Resource temporarily
unavailable)
poll([{fd=11, events=POLLIN}, {fd=12, events=POLLIN}, {fd=30, events=POLLIN},
{fd=31, events=POLLIN}, {fd=41, events=POLLIN}], 5, 0) = 0 (Timeout)
recvmsg(30, {msg_namelen=0}, 0) = -1 EAGAIN (Resource temporarily
unavailable)
recvmsg(30, {msg_namelen=0}, 0) = -1 EAGAIN (Resource temporarily

recvmsg(31, {msg_namelen=0}, 0) = -1 EAGAIN (Resource temporarily

recvmsg(31, {msg_namelen=0}, 0) = -1 EAGAIN (Resource temporarily
unavailable)
recvmsg(31, {msg_namelen=0}, 0) = -1 EAGAIN (Resource temporarily
unavailable)

end up causing NFS traffic. It is about 50/50 that I see a timeout and "data
available on fd 12"
When that data is available and read (one character) then often one character
is written to fd 30 (more than 50% of the cases, but not always).

The three filedescriptors are a pipe and two sockets. I don't know how
to find out where they go.

lr-x-- 1 wolff wolff 64 Feb 20 13:40 12 -> 'pipe:[42472991]'
lrwx-- 1 wolff wolff 64 Feb 20 13:40 30 -> 'socket:[42471337]'
lrwx-- 1 wolff wolff 64 Feb 20 13:40 31 -> 'socket:[42470374]'

I see 4637 poll calls each 10 seconds, 2270 read (12...) calls (49%)
and 1537 (33%) writes to fd 30. With about 23000 total EAGAIN calls to
recvmsg. The total of 23000 corresponds to the number of network packets
in a period of 10 seconds...

So my conclusion is that

recvmsg(30, {msg_namelen=0}, 0) = -1 EAGAIN (Resource temporarily
unavailable)
recvmsg(30, {msg_namelen=0}, 0) = -1 EAGAIN (Resource temporarily
unavailable)
recvmsg(31, {msg_namelen=0}, 0) = -1 EAGAIN (Resource temporarily
unavailable)
recvmsg(31, {msg_namelen=0}, 0) = -1 EAGAIN (Resource temporarily
unavailable)
recvmsg(31, {msg_namelen=0}, 0) = -1 EAGAIN (Resource temporarily
unavailable)

is causing NFS(?!) network traffic.

OK. Found it That process has many tasks and pipe 12/13 is used for
inter-task communciation. Some of the other tasks are spinning on
statting and/or opening some files:

/home/wolff/snap/chromium/common/chromium/Default/databases/Databases.db-wal
/home/wolff/snap/chromium/common/chromium/Default/databases/Databases.db-journal
/home/wolff/snap/chromium/common/chromium/Default/File System/primary.origin

These files don't exist. (such a "does not exist" is not cached by NFS,
by design).

[Bug 1913304] Re: Chromium crashes after about a day.

2021-01-26 Thread rew
FYI: I pasted the command into a window that happened to be ssh-ed into
the other machine (where i'm not at). So it said it would open a browser
window. So I VNC to the other machine, and... I get a browser in a
normal window (slow) over the ssh. So I authenticate as requested. and
then:

Package chromium-browser not installed and no hook available, ignoring

great.

So then I did it again on the other machine and after authenticating I
got the "collecting information " (moving progress indicator).
After ten minutes I decided to abort that but saw:

Authenticating as: ... (wolff)
Password:

in the window that I had pasted the apport-collect into. So I type my
password. and get:

 AUTHENTICATION FAILED ===

Shit happens, I occasionally make a typo in my password. Could've
happened. So second time I try again, checking capslock and typing
carefully. and:

 AUTHENTICATION FAILED ===

Then saying "F*** it" I continue with my day and find 38 Emails in my
inbox about stuff added to this bugreport. Turns out it DID work each
time it said "auth failed". Sigh.

[Bug 1913304] UdevDb.txt

apport information

** Attachment added: "UdevDb.txt"
   https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1913304/+attachment/5457055/+files/UdevDb.txt

** Description changed:

After about a day of use (or more accurately, after about half a day of
non-use) my browser reports "aw snap: SIGTRAP" on every new page. Old
pages still render, but a reload causes the "aw snap!"

It happens on both my Ubuntu 20.04 workstations. It is not hardware on
either one, I'd think. Other stuff like: "is the disk full" seem like
likely candidates, but... two different machines, same behaviour!

  --
  the gritty details:

  1) Both machines report:
  Description:Ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS
  Release:20.04

  2) One machine reports:

  % dpkg -l chromium-browser
  ii chromium-browser 1:85.0.4183.83-0ubuntu0.20.04.2 amd64
Transitional package - chro>

the other says: dpkg-query: no packages found matching chromium-browser

  3) I expect to be able to continue to work with my browser even after
I've been away for 8 hours (sleep, you know).

  4) all new pages display "aw snap!" instead.

After about a day of use (or more accurately, after about half a day of

It happens on both my Ubuntu 20.04 workstations. It is not hardware on
either one, I'd think. Other stuff like: "is the disk full" seem like
likely candidates, but... two different machines, same behaviour!

  3) I expect to be able to continue to work with my browser even after

[Bug 1871268] Re: Installation fails due to useless immediate configuration error when "Install Third-Party Drivers" is selected

2021-01-24 Thread rew
Guys. What I don't get is that it is 2021 now, this bug has been
reported (in 2019) and is tagged "fixed" and still the installer
"crashed" and tells me it is this bug that is happening.

This happens to me on a "clean" machine. I unplugged my harddisk, only
have an SSD installed now. The installer image I downloaded yesterday
(jan 23 2021).

[Bug 1910991] [NEW] munpack has trouble with duplicate filenames.

2021-01-11 Thread rew
Public bug reported:

I have a mail with one attachment, a text/plain description and a
text/html description. Both are encoded quoted printable.

munpack then decides to use tempdesc.txt as the filename for both. Then
when the second "create" fails, it deletes it, before the first instance
tries to rename the temporary file to the final name. So I end up with
zero copies of this part of the message !

Here are the headers of the offending sections:

* I expected it to provide me with both versions of the message text, getting
either one would've been better than neither.
* I would have wanted it to provide me with each part of the message in a
separate file, allowing my script to further handle each part as appropriate.

* The good news: In the case at hand I was going to ignore BOTH missing
message/parts, I'm only interested in the third... :-)

2020-09-04 Thread rew
Public bug reported:

When I start geeqie (after upgrading from 16.04 to 20.04) it does nothing for
25 seconds before starting as normal.

I've run stracen and see that it opens a socket to: /run/user/1000/bus,
sends a couple of messages but then apparently expects another reply but
times out after 25 seconds.

1599213714.299338 connect(8, {sa_family=AF_UNIX,
sun_path="/run/user/1000/bus"}, 110) = 0 <0.16>
1599213714.299935 sendto(8, "AUTH\r\n", 6, MSG_NOSIGNAL, NULL, 0) = 6 <0.07>
1599213714.38 recvfrom(8, "REJECTED EXTERNAL\r\n", 4096, 0, NULL, NULL) =
19 <0.05>
1599213714.300038 sendto(8, "AUTH EXTERNAL 31303030\r\n", 24, MSG_NOSIGNAL,
NULL, 0) = 24 <0.06>
1599213714.300060 recvfrom(8, "OK 63a9"..., 4096, 0, NULL, NULL) = 37
<0.05>
1599213714.300081 sendto(8, "NEGOTIATE_UNIX_FD\r\n", 19, MSG_NOSIGNAL, NULL, 0)
= 19 <0.05>
1599213714.300102 recvfrom(8, "AGREE_UNIX_FD\r\n", 4096, 0, NULL, NULL) = 15
<0.05>
1599213714.300122 sendto(8, "BEGIN\r\n", 7, MSG_NOSIGNAL, NULL, 0) = 7
<0.05>
1599213714.303699 read(8, "\1\0\0\0\0\0\0\0", 16) = 8 <0.04>
1599213714.303716 poll([{fd=8, events=POLLIN}], 1, 25000) = 0 (Timeout)
<25.020145>

I use a text-based mail reader. When there are images included in the
Email I do "view-attachment" and geeqie gets started. Current Email has
5 images to view, so for each I have to launch geeqie and it takes 25
seconds.

The server has been upgraded in hardware and software so I expected
things to become faster, but this is a whole level of regression :-(

2020-08-31 Thread rew
(posting this from Chromium again, and immediately I see the network
traffic ballooning. It does look a bit as if the linux "select"
behaviour: modify the timeout to show time remaining is involved: It
takes like 15 seconds of medium traffic before stuff is back to the
original level again. My hypothesis is that "1ms" is still in the
timeout field for those first 15 seconds, so the repeat rate of the
triggering code is not so high. Then the timeout is reduced to zer and
it goes fullblast...

[Bug 1893650] [NEW] Chromium snap causes network traffic. (Duh!)

2020-08-31 Thread rew
Public bug reported:

When Chromium is running (but otherwise idle!), there is NFS traffic
between my workstation and the NFS server here. On the order of 24000
packets per second. Several tens of packets, OK. several hundreds: mwah.
But this is outrageous.

When strace-ing the chrome process I see:

poll([{fd=11, events=POLLIN}, {fd=12, events=POLLIN}, {fd=31, events=POLLIN},
{fd=32, events=POLLIN}, {fd=137, events=POLLIN}], 5, 0) = 0 (Timeout)
recvmsg(31, {msg_namelen=0}, 0) = -1 EAGAIN (Resource temporarily
unavailable)
recvmsg(31, {msg_namelen=0}, 0) = -1 EAGAIN (Resource temporarily
unavailable)
recvmsg(32, {msg_namelen=0}, 0) = -1 EAGAIN (Resource temporarily
unavailable)
recvmsg(32, {msg_namelen=0}, 0) = -1 EAGAIN (Resource temporarily
unavailable)
recvmsg(32, {msg_namelen=0}, 0) = -1 EAGAIN (Resource temporarily
unavailable)

It uses poll to wait for events... and then gets informed: A timeout
occurred, no filedescriptors are ready and then STILL Tries to read from
fd 31 and 32. Furthermore, the process seems to specify a 0 timeout as
quite often I see the poll call return in about 20-50 microseconds.

The process that is doing this shows as:

 /snap/chromium/1284/usr/lib/chromium-browser/chrome --no-default-
browser-check --no-first-run --password-store

[Bug 776929] Re: grub-mkconfig picks the wrong kernel.

2020-03-06 Thread rew
Ah, Marcus. I maintain a package myself. Somtimes you hear "that bug has
been present for years and hasn't been fixed" while it is an easy fix,
but you didn't know about it. Nobody reported it.

So I try to report things and thereby make things better for everybody.
And hopefully I won't run into it "years later" myself. So, something
I've wanted in tcsh, I've reported that and now the maintainer has
included my suggestions. So maybe buntu 2022 will have the new version
of tcsh and FINALLY I can easily include my tcsh startup files in my
systems!

[Bug 1838975] [NEW] Login is slow.

2019-08-05 Thread rew
Public bug reported:

I've installed Ubuntu-server on a raspberry pi 3. That's my first Ubuntu
install, previously I've always used Raspbian. Anyway, my impression was
that ubuntu was seriously sluggish compared to raspbian.

Turns out that one of the main things is that the login through ssh runs
a whole bunch of update-notifier scripts that take a while (5-6 seconds
in my case).

After disabling most of the scripts in /etc/update-motd.d, the Ubuntu-
raspberry is now pleasantly fast. (It is now copying files. Hopefully
it'll finish this month: a WHOLE lot of files :-) Yes the estimate
of a month is realistic.)

[Bug 1838975] Re: Login is slow.

2019-08-05 Thread rew
P.S.
I THINK that update-motd is meant to run the updates only occasionally, and
just cache the results somewhere.
I'd find a reasonable strategy that if the cache is older than an hour, but
less than 24h, you'd get the cached version, but a refresh is run in the
background. If the cache is older than 24h, you'll have to wait for the cache
to be refreshed. If the cache is less than an hour old, show the cache.

[Bug 1782934] Re: XPS 13 9350 black screen with kernel versions > 4.15.0-20-generic

2018-10-10 Thread Oliver Rew
I did not see it mentioned above, so I figured it was worth noting.

This black screen problem is also experienced by many Dell XPS 13 windows users.
https://www.dell.com/community/XPS/XPS-13-9350-Black-Screen/td-p/5912336

No one has yet found a real fix, but there is some speculative talk
about it relating to microcode on the Intel HD 520 Embedded Graphics. It
is pretty much agreed in that community that this first started taking
place after the 2-13-2018 release of the Intel HD 520 Graphics
Driver(15.65.4.4944). It did on my own Dell XPS 13 (9350).

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/product/88355/Intel-HD-Graphics-520

The only widely accepted fix was reverting back to the default Windows
Graphics Driver. I personally reinstalled Windows multiple times and
tried to install every past HD 520 driver to no avail. After that, I
switched to Ubuntu and it worked for a while until this bug.

[Bug 1782083] Re: Compilation seems to succeed, but binary does not run correctly

2018-08-19 Thread rew
I decided to try to trace this down to the source line that compiles
differently between the two distributions causing the difference in
behavior.

I failed.

The problem is with the linker. linking the executable on xenial from
the objects compiled on bionic creates a working binary and linking the
objects created on xenial with the linker on bionic results in a non-
working binary.

Oh.. There is an old bug where the linker would forget to or in the
"this is thumb" flag when linking thumb code. (A jump in ARM is to a
target address, but as instructions are always at least 16 bit wide, the
bottom bit is in essence always zero. This is used to signal "this is
thumb code" when that bit is high. So when jumping to the function at
address 0x8000120, the actual target should resolve to 0x8000121 to
indicate it is arm-thumb code. My processor is thumb-only and will fault
on a jump that resolves to 0x8000120.)

I will check if this is the case and report back.
(If this is in fact the bug, I reported this years ago. 2010-2014 era)

[Bug 1783147] [NEW] Applications compile with this crash

I have tried to compile them with gcc-arm from bionic and I get crashes
all around. I have installed a chrooted xenial and now compile inside
the chrooted environment and... my applications behave as they should
again.

Please consider this a heads-up that this compiler is not working for

[Bug 1782559] [NEW] Wayland hangs?

2018-07-19 Thread rew
Public bug reported:

I have an industrial PC that needs to run Ubuntu. Installing from USB
stick was a hassle. (didn't work in dozens of combinations of memory
stick (kingston/adata), usb slot (front, back), distribution(14.04,
16.04, 18.04), variant (server, desktop, mini, net)

When I finally got it installed, the PC would hang after booting, never
completing to the login. A recovery boot allowed me to install ssh, and
using SSH I could see the wayland process. I'm a bit wary of wayland, so
I removed it and now the system boots.

[Bug 1781001] Re: DKMS seems to hang after installing a module.

2018-07-10 Thread rew
** Package changed: dpkg (Ubuntu) => dkms (Ubuntu)

** Description changed:

+ (while gathering info for this bugreport, my knowledge about this issue
+ has been growing. So the top part was written with not everything known
+ yet)
+
In my case I installed tp_smapi, but on the internet I've found others
  that have installed other modules.

When configuring the tp-smapi-dkms package it says it will uninstall the
module first and the it reports: Building initial module for
  4.15.0-23-generic

After that it hangs, or so it seems. It turns out that somewhere in
there a script is being called with output redirected to /dev/null. But
under certain circumstances, in my case "the computer is configured for
secure boot", whiptail is being called asking for a password.

Whiptail outputs curses codes to write stuff to the screen but that is
redirected to /dev/null. It then waits for input from the user. I've
debugged this to the point that it is saying this:

- whiptail --backtitle Package configuration --title Configuring Secure
+  whiptail --backtitle Package configuration --title Configuring Secure
Boot --output-fd 12 --nocancel --msgbox Your system has UEFI Secure Boot
enabled. UEFI Secure Boot requires additional configuration to work
with third-party drivers. The system will assist you in configuring
UEFI Secure Boot. To permit the use of third-party drivers, a new
Machine-Owner Key (MOK) has been generated. This key now needs to be
enrolled in your system's firmware. To ensure that this change is being
made by you as an authorized user, and not by an attacker, you must
choose a password now and then confirm the change after reboot using
the same password, in both the "Enroll MOK" and "Change Secure Boot
state" menus that will be presented to you when this system reboots.

[Bug 1781001] [NEW] DKMS seems to hang after installing a module.

2018-07-10 Thread rew
Public bug reported:

I've
debugged this to the point that it is saying this:

whiptail --backtitle Package configuration --title Configuring Secure
If you proceed but do not confirm the password upon reboot, Ubuntu will
still be able to boot on your system but any hardware that requires
third-party drivers to work correctly may not be usable. --scrolltext 20

but, as I said the output is redirected to /dev/null.

The call-tree is as follows:
-dpkg(18879)---tp-smapi-dkms.p(18880)---common.postinst(18881)---dkms(19146)---dkms(19161)---frontend(20224)-+-update-securebo(20238)

I have looked there, and I don't see a reason why it would redirect the output

Alternatively I'd think that maybe the subprocess /usr/lib/dkms/common.postinst
would redirect its own stdout to /dev/null.

On the other hand I found
  dkms build -m $NAME -v $VERSION -k $KERNEL $ARCH > /dev/null

2018-03-04 Thread rew
I tried it again:
assurancetourix:~> ssh falbala sudo apt install ntp

and this time I got... What's in the previous comment. (I looked for a
"preview" button to see if I got the "quoted text" right. Expecting to
be able to edit, and not finding the preview, I clicked subit. Now I
can't find the "edit" either. Sorry )

So It seems the bug mostly got fixed in the past 8 years. At least
for me it did

[Bug 1638954] Re: non-X11 guest utilities depends on.... X11 stuff.

2016-11-04 Thread rew
Let me get this straight.. The package marked "non-X11 guest
utilities" is for people who DO want X11? You consider this not a bug? I
guess I'm from a different planet.

You as a member of the virtualbox-package-maintainer team might know
that "just virtualbox-guest-dkms" is appropriate for my situation. I as
a Linux-power-user (24 years now), do not. I have to look at the package
names and the "short description" to determine which package I need.

When the short package description says "no X11" that's when I expect
the package NOT to pull in 120 packages including the whole X11. I
maintain "MTR", which has a GTK version, but debian (and ubuntu) ships a
version with -nox11 in the name of the package to prevent exactly this:
pulling in the whole X11 stuff, which is never going to be used.

Trust me. I'm not getting worked up for my own pleasure. I have my
solution now. I just think that it's stupid that you find it acceptable
to have this messed up situation continue to exist into the future.
Sure: if you say: "it's difficult to fix because ,
so we can't fix it before 17.04, but we're working on it for after that
timeframe." fine. But just dismissing this as: "that's the way its
supposed to be" is stupid.

I suspect that the state change bound->bound causes a short (unnoticable
to humans) interruption of the networking config, which the virtual
interface for the VM notices. (in the VM the network then goes down for
about ten seconds! Noticeable to humans... ).

[Bug 1447968] Re: ImageMagick lost JPEG2000 support in Vivid Vervet

2016-05-29 Thread rew
Also affects XENIAL.

I tried compiling from source: Resulting binary: no JP2 support.

Then I installed "libopenjp2-dev" and built again. Now I do have jp2
support.

So the problem is that the imagmagick upstream releas has switched to
prefer libopenjp2 instead of libjasper, while the ubuntu build procedure
lists libjasper-dev as a build requirement instead of libopenjp2.

[Bug 1571296] [NEW] Sawfish crash

2016-04-17 Thread rew
Public bug reported:

After upgrading from 15.10, xenial-sawfish stops with an error indicating that
wallpaper can't be found.
Turns out it is looking for wallpaper.jl or wallpaper.jlc. I searched for the
file, installed it where it could find it, and that is currently my workaround.

I reported it as "returns to login prompt", because that's what would
normally happen. I've seen sawfish crashes in the past, and I've
recently figured out enough to maybe catch it in the act to make a
sensible report about it. But since Xenial is so close that's not worth
persuing. Those crashes (losing my x session) were so annoying that I
have wrapped sawfish in a script that asks: really quit? before exiting
the loop of restarting sawfish.

So... somehow the wallpaper.jl is not being included the package.

[Bug 1532576] [NEW] NBDkit is outdated.

2016-01-10 Thread rew
Public bug reported:

Apparently NBD has moved on and now uses a new protocol and support for
the old protcol has been dropped. So I have a bunch of NBD servers that
need porting to the new protocol. Doing some research I found nbdkit
that should take care of most of the protocol thingies leaving me to
just copy-paste the essential stuff of my NBD servers into an example
framework... Great!

Turns out that all this was for nothing: nbdkit produces an OLD STYLE
NBD server. Sigh.

The weird thing is that hte source seems to be aware of this as they call it
old style header old style handshake and it has the define for a fixed newstyle
handshake.

I like simple fixes. The fix can be simpler:
  cat | sed -e 's/^%%CreationDate: (Tue/%%CreationDate: (tue/' > $INPUT_TEMP
can be:
  sed -e '/^%%CreationDate:/s/Tue/tue/' > $INPUT_TEMP

[Bug 1454293] Re: Upgrade doesn't work.

2015-05-13 Thread rew
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected dist-upgrade vivid

** Description changed:

The upgrader (do-release-upgrade) says it cannot do the upgrade, after
  calculating upgrade.

It tells me to file a bug, and the bug-reporter then hangs. I press
control-C and somehow it continues. Then I get a firefox window that
  doesn't work.

Anyway. The error message (cannot perform upgrade) is not helpful in
  helping me solve the problem.

I had a PPA installed, I guessed that might be the problem, removed it
from my sources.list. But the error persists.

I can hack a kernel, I can write/maintain Linux packages. But if the
error is of the form: cannot do X I can't start looking for the cause.

A thread on askubuntu marked as solved suggested just changing the
references to the old distro's name to the new distro's name in
apt/sources.list . I did that, and now it's upgrading. If this works,
why can't do-release-upgrade do what it is supposed to do?

lsb_release -rd
  already says:
Description:Ubuntu 15.04
Release:15.04
  but I'm upgrading from 14.10.
