[Bug 2064192] Re: Unable to resize windows

2024-05-13 Thread rue
HI I tested this also as I was not having the issues described at the time.
Working with lotuspsychje I set my login to 'Autologin' rebooted and then I had
the resize bug.

Applications affected don't support CLD and some are Electron apps.
Gimp, Hexchat, Spotify, Discord, Teams

One thing I noticed was when these apps were behaving correctly, they had a
slight drop shadow around them.
On reboot and autologin enabled that drop shadow was do longer there and I
could not resize the windows.

Is this also related to the Compositor? Maybe something is not starting
when Autologin is enabled.

[Bug 2059045] Re: Xfce xpanel double network panel icon

2024-04-22 Thread rue
I think this is an issue where both the 'Status Tray Plugin' and
'Indicator Plugin' are showing duplicates I have had this issue on other
versions of Xubuntu. my workaround is to remove the one of them.

I have found removing the Indicator plugin seems to be the better option.
I'm not sure why Xubuntu have both but I think this is a Ubuntu specific thing.
My Debian system only use the 'Status Try Plugin'

at the last section I was at which is About and insistently freezes and

Maybe unrelated but when I was in Live mode before installing, opening
Gnome Control Center and navigating to About, I would be prompted for a

[Bug 1965440] [NEW] After the Gnome 42 beta update, desktop freezes periodically

2022-03-17 Thread rue
Public bug reported:

After updating my laptop yesterday 17.03.2022 I have noticed random
Desktop freezes, where the nothing on the desktop is responsive apart
from the mouse. This doesn't appear to be a hard lockup where you need
to hard reset.

I am able to get my desktop back by hitting the Super(Windows) key which
seems to unfreeze the desktop with no errors or corruption.

I am also experiencing this on another Desktop computer running Jammy
20.04. This desktop is running an old AND/ATI RV710 card under wayland.

There doesn't seem to be any pattern or obvious trigger that is causing
this.

I can submit a report from the other computer if needed.

[Bug 1962276] Re: [jammy] Laptop monitor does not turn off/disconnect when the lid is closed

2022-02-27 Thread rue
Hi Daniel, I upgraded to kernel version 5.15.25-051525-generic and I can say
things seem to be working.

Clam shell mode works.
Tested booting the laptop and then plugging in the HDMI and Hub. After closing
the lid it immediately switched to using the external monitor as default.

Booted the laptop with the HDMI and hub plugged in. The login screen
displayed on the External monitor, logged in and external monitor was
setup correctly as the default monitor.

Tested suspend and that worked as expected.

All seems to be working as correctly now

Thanks

[Bug 1962276] Re: Laptop monitor does not turn off/disconnect when the lid is closed

2022-02-24 Thread rue
Hi Daniel yes it is a recent install.
I reinstalled Jammy yesterday and ran the updates. It was working fine
yesterday and also this morning. before I installed the latest updates. I only
noticed that things were not working right when I came home and reconnected the
laptop to the external monitor.

I have reinstalled Jammy a few time on this machine.

I'll keep an eye on the new updates that come through and continue
researching.

My work around at the moment is to plugin the external monitor and and
in the display setting switch it to primary for the session.

It works well enough

Thanks

[Bug 1962276] [NEW] Clamshell mode no longer works after todays updates

2022-02-24 Thread rue
Public bug reported:

After today's updates I can no longer run my Laptop in clam shell mode.
I don't use a dock. I connect the second monitor via HDMI cable and and
external keyboard/mouse via a USB hub.

Usually I can just plugin the monitor and close the lid and the primary
display will switch to the external monitor. Now it will default to
Monitor 2 as part of the joint display.

I also tested booting the machine and closing the lid but this still
defaulted to the external monitor as the 2nd display.

[Bug 1962123] [NEW] When opening a video file Totem complains of missing codecs but video plays correctly

2022-02-23 Thread rue
Public bug reported:

When opening a video in Totem it will show an Unable to play this file warning
and give you the option to Cancel or Find in Ubuntu Software. If you click on
Find in Ubuntu Software the video will start playing correctly. The software
store will but not find any codecs.
I have tried this with a few videos and Totem behaves that same way, but all
videos play correctly

[Bug 1945112] Re: AirPod volume is too low - stack exchange fix works

2021-09-27 Thread Michael De La Rue
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected

** Description changed:

  see https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/437468/bluetooth-headset-
  volume-too-low-only-in-arch

  ==Reproducer==

  1) install Ubuntu 20.4
  2) pair with a set of Apple AirPods
  3) try to listen to some video
  4) put volume up to maximum and repeat 3)
  5) turn on volume boost and repeat 4)

  ==Actual result==

at any stage 3, 4 or 5 the audio from the AirPods is extremely quiet,
almost too low to hear (though after 5 it becomes audible in a quiet
  environment)

  ==Expected result===

It should be possible to hear the sound through the AirPods by default.

  ==Comment==

The following instructions from the stack exchange answer fix the
  problem

  Edit

  /lib/systemd/system/bluetooth.service

  and change

  ExecStart=/usr/lib/bluetooth/bluetoothd

  to

  ExecStart=/usr/lib/bluetooth/bluetoothd --noplugin=avrcp

The laptop hardware this is done on is a Dell XPS-13, though I suppose
this shouldn't make a difference.

at any stage 3, 4 or 5 the audio from the AirPods is extremely quiet,
almost too low to hear (though after 5 it becomes audible in a quiet
environment)

==Expected result===

It should be possible to hear the sound through the AirPods by default.

==Comment==

The following instructions from the stack exchange answer fix the
problem

Edit

/lib/systemd/system/bluetooth.service

and change

ExecStart=/usr/lib/bluetooth/bluetoothd

to

ExecStart=/usr/lib/bluetooth/bluetoothd --noplugin=avrcp

2021-03-23 Thread rue
Ok Update 3: I've just installed Firefox 87 from the website and same graphics
issues as before.
What ever they have changed in the Nightly build 89.0a1, seems to have fixed
the problem.

Thanks

[Bug 1919955] Re: weird graphics artifacts in Firefox on Xorg after upgrade

2021-03-23 Thread rue
Hi Olivier below is the the log for the 17th - 18th of March.
Just to note:
1. This machine has an old graphics card RV710 Radeon HD 4550 so there could be
issues there.

2. I just down loaded Firefox Nightly from their site and ran it. it runs fine
with out any graphics issues. So the issue maybe a combo of my old graphics
card and Firefox 86.0?
Firefox current: 86.0
Firefox Nightly 89.0a1

Firefox 87 is just released so should be updated shortly in Ubuntu we
could wait to see if that fixes the issue?

2021-03-18 Thread rue
Public bug reported:

Hello.
When I have any applications running and I open up the application menu the
running applications cover the Activities Overlay, I think this is what it is
called in Gnome, maybe application grid?
I will add a screenshot.
This happens in X and under Wayland
Thanks.

[Bug 1919955] [NEW] weird graphics artifacts in Firefox on Xorg after upgrade

2021-03-17 Thread rue
Public bug reported:

Hi, just updated today and after restart I logged in under Xorg and when
opening Firefox you get blue and black pixelated static across the screen. this
only happens running Xorg, not under Wayland. A bit hard to explain the issue,
so added a screenshot
Also this could be an Xorg issue
It only seems to affect Firefox.
Thanks
Rue

[Bug 1798011] Re: HDD thrashing. System locks all input devices. Hard boot required to regain control.

2020-10-15 Thread Michael De La Rue
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1767299 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1767299

Thrashing and system lockup are possible to achieve with Firefox on a
default Ubuntu install with much more memory than this. E.g. mine has
16G.

This might not be argued to be a bug with the upstream Firefox since it
is expected behaviour, however according to #1767299 there is a
conscious choice to make Ubuntu swap defaults different from the
standard Linux recommendations. That means that the Ubuntu Firefox
package needs to be able to handle memory exhaustion gracefully.

That means that this bug is valid and _is_ annoying for beginning users
and so, if there's a choice to limit the default swap size then this
should be fixed. There might need to be a local different patch to
Firefox memory handling.

[Bug 1846560] Re: 18.04.3LTS server install fails to detect SATA or NVME drives

After searching on that "Unfortunately probing for devices" error I
tried the more fully-featured alternate installer ISO and it works.
Installed to /dev/nvme0n1 and booted successfully to the new OS without
needing to load any added arguments to the boot kernel.

[Bug 1846560] [NEW] 18.04.3LTS server install fails to detect SATA or NVME drives

2019-10-03 Thread Randy Rue
Public bug reported:

Trying to install the ubuntu-18.04.3-live-server-amd64.iso on a Dell
Precision 3630 workstation and can't make the installer see either disk,
not the nvme/PICe SSD or the SATA.

I'm booting using UEFI as these Dells can boot using legacy/BIOS boot
for external media for purposes of installation but are not capable of
booting an OS from any internal device. I've confirmed this by booting
in BIOS mode, can install and tell grub-install to boot from
/dev/nvme0n1, but on reboot no OS is found.

Tried loading nvme options as per
https://www.dell.com/support/article/us/en/04/sln299303/loading-ubuntu-
on-systems-using-pcie-m2-drives?lang=en with no change.

With or without the nvme_load=YES option, if I alt-F2 to the console at
the point where the installer says "Unfortunately probing for devices to
install to failed..." I can run fdisk -l and see both drives. I can also
mount, format and write/read data on both disks. This suggests the
kernel/OS are seeing the disks but the installer is failing to detect
them.

The error message also suggests logging a bug here and including the
contents of /var/log/installer (attached).

Any guidance is appreciated.

[Bug 1830001] Re: Gnome-todo only syncing oneway, will not pull tasks down from Google account

2019-05-26 Thread rue
HI just an update Gnome-todo seems to be syncing both ways again.
When adding a task to Gnome-todo it will sync straight away to Google tasks.

When adding a task in Google tasks, for it to show up in Gnome-todo I ether
have to close it for around ten minutes and reopen or reboot the computer for
it to show up.
So I'm guessing this is a refresh issue.

[Bug 1830001] [NEW] Gnome-todo only syncing oneway, will not pull tasks down from Google account

2019-05-22 Thread rue
Public bug reported:

Description:Ubuntu 19.04
Release:19.04
Gnome-to 3.28.1-3

When using Gnome-todo today I noticed that it is not pulling down tasks from my
Google account. This has been working fine in the past. I can still create a
task in Gnome-todo and it will show in Google tasks
This is happening on my Desktop and Laptop.
I've removed and re-added my google account to Gnome but no change.
I've attached an error message I was getting with Gnome-todo earlier but I'm
not getting this error now.

The Calendar application and Notifications still seem working properly with my
Google account.
I tried to file a bug report with ubuntu-bug, it gathers the information and I
click the send button but nothing happens so adding manually here.

Thanks for your help.

[Bug 1011664] Re: package apache2.2-common 2.2.22-1ubuntu1 failed to install/upgrade: ErrorMessage: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2012-06-13 Thread Dustin Rue
Sorry, probably not what you're going to want to hear but I simply
removed the apache and related packages and finished the upgrade. After
rebooting I attempted to install the apache packages I need only to be
thwarted by apache2-2-bin. Seems that that file was the issue all
along.

At any rate, removing all apache packages and installing them fresh
resolved the issue. Server is back up and running properly.

[Bug 762478] Re: [nouveau] No icons shown in unity launcher

2011-05-16 Thread rue
well it was only after I uninstalled Unity 2D that Jockey started
reporting the false driver error, and not being able to log back into
Unity (the driver currently activated but not in use) bug has been
around for sometime in verious versions of Ubuntu looks like I triggered
it again somehow

I defenitly think it is a driver issue I have two ATI machines that run
beautifuly with the Unity Desktop no problems at all, but my Nividia
machine just wont render Unity correctly.

[Bug 762478] Re: [nouveau] No icons shown in unity launcher

2011-05-14 Thread rue
I just updated Ubuntu and logged back into the unity desktop (i've been using
Unity 2D because of this bug)
but now when logging back into Ubuntu desktop my Icons show up in he launcher
which is great but now I have noticed that the Launcher wont dodge windows
anymore and open windows hide underneath the launcher also the ALT F2 wont
start the run dialog ether. Not sure but what fixed the icons not showing seem
to have broken these things. everything works fine in Unity 2D so I'm sticking
with that for now.

2011-05-14 Thread rue
I uninstalled unity 2D and restarted and now it wont load unity saying I
don't have the hardware for it, so it loads the classic desktop, when I open
Jockey it says that the driver currently activated but not in use, im using
the 173 nvidia driver. I uninstalled the driver, rebooted and installed it
again but still get the same message in Jockey. oh by the way i'm running a
GeForce FX 5500 card

[Bug 762478] Re: [nouveau] No icons shown in unity launcher

2011-05-14 Thread rue
Okay from my previous post I was able to get Unity running again by
adding UNITY_FORCE_START=1 to /etc/environment Big thanks to nathanvda
http://askubuntu.com/questions/37084/nvidia-driver-activated-but-
currently-not-in-use But now I am back to a unity desktop with no
launcher icons, so kinda back to square one.

[Bug 762478] Re: No icons shown in unity launcher

2011-04-24 Thread rue
I have this problem as well, I reinstalled Ubuntu from the beta 1 CD and and
the Icons in the Launcher were showing
but after updating to Beta 2 the problem came back I lost all the Icons in the
Launcher.

As a kind of workaround I installed Unity 2d which looks and acts much like the
3d version, everything works fine in Unity 2d
I think it would be a good idea if Unity 2d was installed along with the main
install of Ubuntu so if issues arise with the 3d version you could drop back to
Unity 2d which is far better than the Gnome 2x desktop at leased with Unity 2d
you can still get the look and feel of the new desktop Ubuntu is promoting

[Bug 757990] Re: missing but working icons in unity-launcher

This has happened to me as well, after a crash I lost the panels on the Desktop.
I ran unity --reset-icons to get my desktop back which worked but no luck with
the Launcher Icons
